Its sad that such a beautiful place has such a backward and ugly attitude toward a portion of its own citizens. Even sadder are the people on this blog who support this attitude. I will not go to Jamaica, even if given a free trip, because of their anti-gay attitude. Anyone who is gay or supports the civil rights of gay people should boycott this island nation. And while I'm certain not all Jamaicans hate gay people, it is obvious that there are plenty who do—-so much so that they have a blood-thirst for gay people and think nothing of killing gays, apparently with the help of the police. I understand that Jamaicans have national pride and, of course, don't want their homeland insulted (and Perez could have worded it better). But if you actually believe that Christianity supports the verbal, mental or physical abuse of gays and lesbians then you have apparently lost your mind. Do you think Jesus would have approved of beating gay men to death? Do you think he would have approved of lesbians being raped? I don't think so. Jesus taught love. If you believe that being gay is wrong, that is your opinionbut you are not God. The world's richest nation STILL refuses to legalize same sex marriage in some areas! Jamaica is a poor and developing country, where most people, who have no knowledge or education on such matters, focus on sustaining their livelihoods and have little interest in the such affairs. Refusing to travel to a place because the few people who have the privilege of power and voice vote against basic human rights is the selfish attitude that epitomizes the USA to the rest of the world.
My father is Jamaican and I have travelled there from the UK every year of my life. We need to help educate others and bridge ideas! Not isolate people and compound their poverty because of the decisions of their governments!

One difference between Jamaica and Canada is Canada's Criminal Code. It contains anti-hate provisions. For instance, B.C.'s Human Rights Amendment Act (1992) states (1) No person shall publish, issue or display or cause to be published, issued or displayed any statement, publication, notice, sign, symbol, emblem or other representation hat: (a) indicates discrimination or an intention to discriminate against a person or a group or class of persons,
(b) is likely to expose a person or a group or class of persons to hatred or contempt because of the race, colour ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation or age of that person or that group or class of persons.
That would pretty much mess you up, Perez, as many of your meaner articles would probably fall under some of the above provisions. The U.K., parts of Europe, and Australia have some range of anti-hate provisions. Amazing how that type of crime simmers down and becomes generally accepted when it suddenly becomes against the law. It's not a cure-all, but it sets an example of idealogical thinking towards protection of human rights.

Re: danz – I think Perez should have made a better statement. He should realize that Jamaicans are proud of their home, just like other citizens are proud of their nations. America too has many injustices towards gays and lesbians. But there seems to be a prevalent and violent attitude in Jamaica. Jamaica is incredibly beautiful (the pictures look like absolute paradise). That natural beauty should also extend to a friendly haven for ALL people. I think if you have a religious belief that homosexuality is wrong…that is fine because its your opininon. But to force that opinion on others or mistreat and hurt gay people is wrong and is very unChristian-like. Jamaica doesn't suck…but the mistreatment of gays is certainly nothing to be proud of, no matter where you live.

I am an american who has moved to Jamaica because honestly the quality of life is so much better here. There is actually a huge population or americans who now reside in Jamaica. Anyway about two years ago a gay man named Peter King was murdered if you do some research on his case you will see that it is currently on trial and the man who killed him is being charged with murder. Lack of tourist money may hurt the good people in the country, but maybe that will make more people aware of this problem and lead to change.

Perez: I have been going to Jamaica since I was 14. I have family who lives there. While I do believe in gay rights, this is a country that is not as advanced as other countries. I attended a reception where Mr. Henry gave a great speech about his experiences in Jamaica. The mostly gay male audience showed their respect by drinking, eating and talking throughout most of his speech. Common complaints of "the speakers were not loud enough", "the alcohol had been out for some time", "it was boring" were thrown around. Hardly. It's because (most of) the men were more interested in cruising other men and refusing to listen as a fellow gay man was asking for help. Shameful.

Jamaica does have it's problems as it is a young country having only fairly recently achieved independence from Britain, but education is the key. What is happening in Jamacia is sad and unjust–just like many other countries that are not accepting of homosexuality, but it is unfair that Jamacia as a country "sucks".
