Blame the guests???

The Hollywood Reporter says that The Late Show With David Letterman tied its lowest-ever adults 18-49 rating since 1993 last week.

Is it Dave?

Why have people stopped tuning in to his show????

everyone saying dave isn't funny…the jokes on you! you don't get because you're an iditot. don't blame dave because you don't get it! shaffer is a musical genius. he plays the most hilarious songs like when the guests come out. the recent low ratings have to be from bad guests this week. I dvr it every week. dave doesn't have good chemistry with morons. I have the same problem.

    •
    ironic…
    •
just last night, i flipped past The Late Show, and i thought to myself…
    It's been a while since i've tuned into Dave's show on a regular basis…
    •
for some reason, i felt guilty, i have watched Dave's show since back in 1983
    •
i take the Late Show for granted….
    •
i recall, when Dave had his heart surgery back in the 90's….i was SO HAPPY/GLAD
to see him healthy, and back on the show
    •
thanks for the reminder to keep Dave's Show in mind, and NOT take it for granted
that it will simply be on whenever i want it to be
    •
and all we would be left with would be Leno…(ugh!)
(of course..until Conan replaces Leno next year!)
    •
    can't wait!
    •
but then….Dave will be up against Conan!
    •
    YIKEYS!

So that's probably why loser Douche Pratt was allowed on the show - they have no more standards! They obviously couldn't get LC on, so they got the dregs. A desperate move from a sinking ship. Trust me I won't watch any program that invite opportunists like tiny dick and fake, ugly tits on. One's a horse face and the other's a complete jackass. Rather have my simple life that sell my soul for D-level celebrity. That's for damn sure.

He's always been a liberal but in the last few years he's been excessively liberal…that's when I stopped watching him. What was once tolerable has become too painful to watch.

  9. carri says – reply to this

    209

Lack of morale. He's not comfortable talking to certain stars. He's not happy being there. He should retire.

  10. Shann says – reply to this

    210

I LOVE David Letterman! He's old though, so I think he appeals to an older audience

  11. Libs says – reply to this

    211

Uh, maybe his contempt for anyone who is not far-left? Ya think?!

  12. Mozze says – reply to this

    212

Well, Craig Ferguson is HILARIOUS, and he comes on right afterward… but I still can't watch Dave.

Maybe one day Craig will replace dave… he's great, sweeter than dave ever was but hilarious like the dave of 15-20 years ago. miss thos days.

  13. 213

The opinion here seems to be almost unanimous, Dave's far-left agenda has driven off most of his viewers, including me. Remember, when you go too far to the left you're shaking hands with the far-right - both are just as destructive. The majority of Americans just aren't that radical and find that type of extremism a turn off.

  14. crapp says – reply to this

    214

Well when you have guest like Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag do you expect people to watch your show??

  15. Don says – reply to this

    215

    Two words: Paul Shaffer

Paul's inane comments on almost everything Dave says have turned me off to the show. Plus, both Dave and Jay tell the same tired jokes over and over and over.

  16. Asepa says – reply to this

    216

Because his writers fucking suck, Perez.

  17. aneur says – reply to this

    217

because he comes across bitter & almost seems jealous of some of his guests, which makes him come across a bit douchey. where does his sanctimonious attitude come from? he has no room to throw stones from his little glass house.

  18. Slick says – reply to this

    218

He lost it when he kept bashing President Bush. Like they say, shit only floats so long, then it sinks. His show is sinking, with the help of the bald head pimp of his. Is Dave queer or does he just like Dickie or is his name Paul.

  19. maria says – reply to this

    219

because everyone is sick of hearing his political opinions, he should leave his opinions at home. and with guests like spencer pratt, who does he expect to watch?

  20. me says – reply to this

    220

No one watches because he has turned into a senile old gasbag with a extreme political message. I can get politics on the news, I watch late night for entertainment only. Besides, his politics sucks and he isn't funny anymore.

  21. forme says – reply to this

    221

That would be because he insisted on including his personal politics into the show. Conservatives such as myself, who had been long-standing fans of his show, tuned him out completely when he starting pushing his liberal agenda. Not only that, but Dave has also, in his older age, gone from "funny mean" to "genuinely old-man hateful". He isn't funny anymore. It's sad because before he started taking himself so seriously, and preaching politics, he was the funniest of them all.

    223

Letterman SUCKS literally. None of his jokes are funny and he's a liberal moron. I've been on a Jimmy Kimmel ride as of late and i'd rather watch him. Jay is still good and Conan will be asanine when he takes over for Jay. Not to diss Conan but I'll give him this much. He's better than Letterman. Letterman's old, thinks he's funny and I can't stand him.

  24. ):-) says – reply to this

    224

This is what happens when you become very old and washed up. You become worried about your job because you're too old to remember what day it is. Then you kiss up to your boss by becoming a super liberal thinking that will save you ass….It won't! Instead your true fans leave you in droves.

  25. Cari says – reply to this

    225

I cannot stand Letterman. Mainly because of the obnoxious Paul Schaffer who sits there and makes weird noises and comments, I cannot stand him at all. Lettermans show is the same every day, consisting of him saying "what" and throwing cards to make weird sound effects. The Top 10 lists are not even remotely funny anymore. I will take Leno any day over Letterman, I am looking forward to the day that Dave is no longer on

  26. Rhum says – reply to this

    226

I LOVE DAVID LETTERMAN!!!!! He's got full audience every night so how could you say nobody's watching?

  27. 227

he isnt very funny and his interviews are akward to watch, like mary kate olson. she didnt seem too happy to be there

  28. Kat says – reply to this

    228

Because he's a big liberal and no one wants to hear him rant every night about how bad George Bush is. We could turn CNN on if we wanted that.

  29. Bobby says – reply to this

    229

    Because Dave isn't that funny.

  30. Woody says – reply to this

    230

Dave's brand of humor is by far too sophisticated for the IQ level of most of today's viewing audience, all of whom know the names of the American Idol contestants but none know the name of their senator or representative or what else is going on in the world. Dave is very spontaneous and satirical as opposed to Jay Leno's rehearsed recitation of lines written, changed and rewritten a zillion times. Dave is unique, dry, uninhibited, and above all funny. Truly one of a kind, away ahead of his time still.

I never found Letterman funny or entertaining. I agree that his guests don't always seem to be that comfortable during the interviews.

  33. Paris says – reply to this

    233

I love both Letterman and Leno - Leno better. Letterman seems to have lower tier guests. A lot of his schtick is either too silly or too mean for the audience to appreciate. He also seems like kind of an asshole, so probably karma he's not doing well.

    238

    CANADA Loves DAVE!!!

  39. n says – reply to this

    239

First off, I bet Dave doesn't give a shit about his ratings. He's King.

Dave is hilarious, and to all the people talking about him acting awkward: yep, that is part of his comedy. it's his way.
his humor is quirky, goofy, loopy, aloof, one-liners…etc. many people who eatch him now have followed his career since he was a weatherman. yep: a weatherman. i'm 24; i grew up with that show, and will always find him hilarious. I love his weird sense of humor and his sarcasm.

Oh, and for the person/people who said he's always talking about global warming: HE'S JOKING. It's a running joke. For years he's been blaming unrelated, random things on global warming, and he is mocking the fear that some people have of it.

He's not a opompous asshole as someone suggested. He has changed a lot for the better since he had his son, and berfore that, when he had quintuple bypass heart surgery. He was notoriously vocal about 9/11 just a few days later when we were all still "in hidiing" at home. He was the first TV host (of a variety/talk show) to come back on the air.

The man is a legend. Johnny Carson preferred Dave over Leno to replace him on the Tonight Show. Dave's pic is hanging on the wall in Conan's studio by the door. I have given Leno a chance several times throughout the years, but I can honestly say I have NEVER laughed at one thing he said. Not once.

Re: Woody – "too sophisticated" Please, look at that picture of him. The only thing missing is the lobster bib and goo dribbling out of the side of his mouth. I bet his wife has to cut his meat for him. At one time his was funny, now he is just a vile, nasty, intolerant old geezer. Must be advanced brain shrinkage do to old age.

    242

It's because Dave phones it in. He completely sold out and just stopped trying. His writers suck and he is just collecting a check. The only time he borders on funny is when there is a pretty girl sitting next to him. I think it's time for him to either step it up or bow out while he still can.

  43. 243

In Vancouver, Canada…we can watch Dave at 8:30 PM with digital TV. Vancouver LOVES Dave!!

    246

I used to love David Letterman until he disiplayed how meanspirited he
was to any guest that did not share his liberal leanings. This is America
just because you don't agree with your guest, don't make fun of him. i.e.
(Bill O'Reilly). I thought Letterman was above that but he's just another
showbizz liberal pushing his agenda. He used to be funny now he's just mean.

  47. A says – reply to this

    247

Come on, it's not because of guests. They all have the same people on.

  48. Beth says – reply to this

    248

Letterman's show has gone stale. It doesn't seem like he enjoys doing it at all. I do like how he gives some guests a hard time. These celebs take themselves way too seriously. But, yeah, the McCain old jokes are tiresome, as are many of his skits. As far as the others, Leno is way too much of a kiss ass, but his opening is entertaining at times. Conan's monologues are not funny, but his interviews are pretty good. The funniest late night hosts/shows right now are Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson.

I love Dave. I went to the same high school and, initially the same college as Dave at almost the same time. But it seems like half the time the show is an unannounced rerun. You realize you're hearing jokes you heard before or Dave comes outs and asks if everybody had a good Thanksgiving and it's February. I just sorta gave up. (Unless he has a really hot babe!)

I agree…hate Paul Shaffer but LOVE DAVE & anyone who says he isn't funny then your sense of humor is out of wack or you are just stupid and don't get him….he is honestly one of the funniest dude's out there…I honestly can't understand anyone not getting him? Now Jay Leno…IS NOT FUNNY…he's my neighbor here in Burbank and one of the nicest guys in the world but I'll take Dave's humor over his any day of the week!

Sorry but count me in as another Dave fan - who will Never watch again because of his insistence on going so heavy on the political stuff. Everyone has some sort of gripe with W., but do we need to tune into a variety show to hear it? Plus, he's been around so long, he's losing viewers everyday to death….and because you're a fag.

    278

Letterman is a prick. I don't like Spencer Pratt as much as the next guy but as a talk show guest you have to treat people with integrity. He just showed that he is willing to insult anyone for a cheap laugh. I bet you won't see Larry King or Jay Leno doing that. Letterman is finished.

    281

I am so tired of Letterman's Bush bashing lately. Used to be it was lighthearted and satiric. Now it's downright nasty. But that's not the only thing. He seems to follow some script when interviewing and if a guest dares to veer off from the script, the whole thing becomes a mess. He does this time after time now. Bad television. Leno does neither of these things and he's much funnier.

  82. Laura says – reply to this

    282

I love Dave but he totally has a political bias. He bashes Bush & McCain & Hilary & Bill but doesn't say anything negative about Obama. He could have at least cracked a couple Rev. Wright jokes - that isn't touching Obama directly. It kind of bugs me. It is like he is too negative now. When you do it to everyone it is funny & when you pick & choose it is mean.

Re: Lisa – Your the dumbass. I watch Dave sometimes but can understand why Meg was turned off by how he treated Bill O. When you invite a guest on you treat them w/ respect. You can dissagree but you don't act like a 12 yr old spoiled brat because someone has a different opinion than you. Bill is always respectful to people on his show. Dave just can't handle people who don't have the same opinions of him. I was also so sick of his bashing of Hilary & now his continued bashing of John McCain & President Bush is so over the top. There is a difference between telling a joke & being mean spirited. Unfortunately Dave is now mean spirited. I also love Meg's comments realtive to Davey marrying his baby mama.

If I wanted to watch a one-sided political program, I would watch CNN. But I don't. So, instead, I tune-in to Letterman for a few laughs, and all I get is a one-sided political program. We get it: you hate Bush, you despise O'Reilly, and Republicans just make you looney . Would you please either go back to doing what you do best or get yourself a political gig? Just pick one and you'll do just fine.

  90. Kello says – reply to this

    290

It's because Dave has gotten so sarcastic and cynical with his guests!!! He's degrading them all…Paris Hilton, Mary Kate Olsen, Spencer Pratt just to name a few. I know these are "starlets" - they're no Angelina Jolie or Julia Roberts, but a host's job is to make his guests feel welcome, not awkward! It doesn't matter if he's talking to Spencer Pratt or Tom Hanks - treat them all the same! Serves Dave right that no one is watching his show. It's become annoying! He's doing comedy in the expense of his guests, where his guests are the butt of his jokes. That's not funny. You're supposed to make your guests look good! May Dave just needs to retire now. Stop dragging it. He's no longer in his prime. Accept it and move on - Bring Conan in now!

    300

I have to agree with others that I got tired of the obvious hatred of conservatives (and I'm a Dem myself, but geez). Does he have folks like O'Reilly or Cheney's daughter on just so he can mock them and feel superior, or he has them on to show he's open minded? (Not)

The worst part is the show is god awful boring. I used to tune in long enough for the Top Ten lists, which were hit and miss. But I just can't stand seeing him make stupid faces or act retarded anymore.

I do tune in when Jack Hanna is on. I like those, because Hanna is such a doof, and the animals are cute.

But I think Dave only appeals to 100-year-olds. My mom forces it on when she visits, and I usually go take a dump or do something on the computer when she watches it. It's become a horrible show.
