No One Is Watching Letterman

Blame the guests???
The Hollywood Reporter says that The Late Show With David Letterman tied its lowest-ever adults 18-49 rating since 1993 last week.
Is it Dave?
Why have people stopped tuning in to his show????

Re: Joel –
Joel, Dave has gone on record as saying he usually votes Republican and that he has rather conservative leanings. Why all the hate for a fellow conservative?
Letterman talks about current events- and "politics" is a hot topic right now. He does a spot every night called Great Moments of Presidential Speeches, and it features our current ding dong president- it is very funny. He may be a liberal- so what? That's funny if you think rating are down because of Paris Hilton. She is disposable, and will be h has been in 10 years- Letterman will always be remembered. People are sleeping so they can get up early and work- because of crappy economy! Dave rules, we Dvr him everynight!!!!!!!
I turn on Letterman every single night. Sometimes he has on great guests but lately he's had white trashy "guests" on the show like Spencer or Heidi or Mary Kate Olsen. As soon as I see people like that on, I immediately flip over to Jay. These shows HAVE TO REALIZE they cannot and will not watch scumbags like Spencer Pratt, etc, and it is horrible for them to even be booked on the shows at all. I will continue to turn it on at night and I will continue to turn it off if I see anyone who DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE THERE!
Conan sucks! NBC will see that when they let him take over Jay's spot. I hate his show now and see no way he can change to be classy enough for the earlier spot. He is ugly, obnoxious, and is so NOT FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!! He should host some stupid show on VH1 cuz those are the only kind of people who watch him!
dave is a left leaning liberal who showed his ass to bill o reilly . Kimmell is the best on night shift right now.
Re: Joel –
you are right on the money
Somewhere along the line, Dave went too far to the left politically. He may have always been that way, but it never really showed. People are turned off when entertainers show their political leanings. For the most part, Americans think entertainers are a pretty stupid lot. So, when you hear them lean one way or the other, you just want to yell, "shut up and entertain me!"
Letterman has lost his way. Silly antics were his bread and butter. You don't see that anymore. He comes off more like an angry, bitter old man. He needs to lighten up and get back to his basics. It will take awhile to win people back though.
way too liberal, u r supposed to make us laugh—-not make us mad
Because David's humor is too intelligent for most people in America and on this board as well. He doesn't resort to raunchy and juvenile jokes about gays and fat people like Leno does. And let's face it, America likes toilet humor, and that's what Leno is all about. Notice though that Leno never gets Emmy recognition like Letterman does, because the quality of Leno's show is considered subpar. When I watch, I will watch Letterman's opening and then switch over to has the best guests. For me, sometimes Letterman has the best guests; other times Leno does.
Lost me after he was so obviously rude to guests, including Bill O'Reilly. Love the jokes, but don't want or care about your politics, keep them to yourself and do your job.
Correction to my last post: Leno did win an Emmy in 1995, according to Wikipedia. He just hasn't won an Emmy in the last 13 years.
because he is old… leno is better… although once he goes off I don't know who i will watch L:(
To liberal, if I want to watch a bunch of left-wing losers like the ones that go on his show i'd watch Olbermann.
Stopped watching him once he started with all the Bush jokes, made me sick, I'd watch John Stewart if I wanted to see President Bush edited and taken out on context jokes.
Did ya see him asking Mary-Kate Olsen about Spencer Pratt (They went to H.S. together). She tried to keep it nice but you could tell she wanted to tell how bit of a tool he is/was……
Love Dave. Ratings be damned.
Okay…let's address the facts.
Based on originality, content, humor, and quality Late Show is the winner. David Letterman is an original. Leno appeases the masses. That along with a stronger lead-in line-up give him higher ratings. The summer slump is just that. Letterman's numbers will go up as we draw closer to fall. What celebrities (other than those kiddie blockbuster summer movies) are in New York during the middle of vacation time? The answer is Will Smith. Seriously, give the man his due. He has lived up to the legacy of Carson, carved out a spot on CBS in late night where there was none. And, he is simply more classy, astute, and critically recognized than his peers. Leno, Kimmel, Stewart and Conan are competent. But Letterman still is above them.
It is because he is a liberal bore.
cause if your a liberal dickhead you should just keep it to yourself.
Interesting that the last time the ratings were this low was the last flood we had here in Iowa - and access to power/cable/TV was limited. Maybe generally all we ever do around here is watch Letterman.
because he is always too sardonic and has too much fun with the people who are very educationally challenged, that he leaves an unfavorable impression.
because his show S-U-C-K-S
Economy?
Times are tough. I now have to work 12 hours days just to afford what i used to be able to working 8 hour days. I dont have time to stay up for the 11:30 time slot…i need to get to bed so i can work my a$$ off for the man!! I used to watch before the US went to hell.
Quite simply, when he moved from NBC to CBS. Letterman's show has never been the same. After the first few months of going head to head, Leno consistently killed him in the ratings. In general, I just don't like talk shows anymore. I can't stand the celebrities, big or small, and not interested in what they have to say. The same guests make the rounds on all the shows, yes that includes Paris, Spencer, Heidi, Olson trolls. So it's not only Dave that has having them on. I do like Letterman, but more the old Letterman that I watched on NBC when I was 10. I do agree that he has gotten a little too political. I think he goes over board with the McCain age jokes every night. He also bashed Hillary, but never has said anything about Obama. Who knows maybe he can make a ratings comeback. I have a feeling Conan will tank when Leno leaves. I think Jimmy Kimmel's show is going to explode.
Because we have Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert now.
because he's a douche and Paul is an even bigger douche. I can't stand that fucking idiot. what a homo.
Letterman is the king of late night and always will be. Leno appeals to the simple minded with very basic senses of humor. Letterman does very clever comedy that is too clever for most people. Also, kudos to Dave for shooting his show in NYC and not LA. Long live Letterman!!!!!!!!!!
because people like spencer pratt are on the show.
He's become far too political in a very bitter, elitist, cynical, annoying way.
Even though I'm not a Bush fan, I don't like how he constantly is bashing him and the entire republican party in way that seems to come from a very real, very angry place.
By becoming so negatively political, he has alienated a great deal of the conservative and independent audience, as well as the majority of people who just want to laugh and end their day on a light note.
Re: A – Conan will tank when Leno leaves?
Dumbass. CONAN RULES!
And you suck at life.
Go play in traffic.
me me i've got the answer… repetitive jokes!
i personally got tired of it and watching leno lately…
uuh..because he's not funny… duuhhhh!!
Re: Joel – You hit the nail on the head, Joel! Letterman's a self-absorbed, liberal a-hole and so are all his boring guests!
Re: Lesli – Eat shit and die, fucking moron. Conan sucks and so do you!
The fact that letterman's show is taped in New York makes it better than
all the other talk shows. The best part of the show (in my opinion) is when
he incorporates the "regular New York people like the Hello Delli segment".
I must confess however that I am really getting turned off by his liberal,
left-wing, nasty attitude toward anyone that is a conservative. Letterman
owes his success to the American public, liberal and conservative and should
show some respect to the conservatives that helped make him.
Does anyone actually watch TV any more? I live in NYC and I know of only 3 people who actually own a television. Who has time? The Internet has taken over and TV/entertainment have hit an all time LOW and I don't mean Lohan. David letterman is like a relic with an outdated format and archaic sense of humor. Time to push entertainment forward in all arenas. Get creative!
He's not funny any more, laughs at his own jokes, and Paul is an annoying no talent
I HOPE Letterman's team reads these posts just to get a real idea of what people are thinking.
Personally I used to love Dave and I still think he is funny but I haven't been able to watch in years because of one thing and one thing only: Paul Schaffer.
He has become increasingly obnoxious and annoying, not to mention creepy, in the past few years. Whose show is it anyway? It seems like he gets way too much face time and is allowed to interrupt way too much. It's time to let him go. And most of the long-running jokes/skits need to go too, or atleast need to get revamped. The whole reason Conan is always fresh and funny is that he tries new things and knows how to make fun of himself if something isn't as funny as he thought it would be. The Letterman show could save itself if it was willing to committ to a complete overhaul– what was funny 10 years ago isn't quite as funny anymore guys. Time to shape up or ship out.
First off, I cannot watch anyone who puts those Hills people on their show. They disgust me and that one guy has a flash beard that is pervy and grotesque. I do love liberals though and agree 100% that these middle American ignorant assholes probably don't watch Dave because they are uneducated and can't understand any complex humor. I wish middle America and the conservative South would just wash away in all these floods or get blown away in their trailers in a tornado. That would be fan-fucking-tastic!
the stupid interuptions and the high school jokes ….it seems like he is trying to hard…..he should stop the stupid gimmicks, and just be himself…and not to use the same writers as craig ferguson…dave should hire some fresh faces with fresh ideas
Because of the annoying dude on the piano with his stupid comments!
People are not watching Dave because of all his liberal rants. He is so over. Looser.
But Conan is on at a later time so it's not because of that. I don't really get it because LETTERMAN IS FUNNIER THAN LENO! His show doesn't try to have the coolest most "IN" guests, and the contests that he has his audiences do are quirky. No one does what he does. i love that he makes celebs uncomfortable, that's what I like to watch, instead of LENO who just plays it safe and IS A BAD INTERVIEWER. I have to admit though that for around the past 2 years, I haven't really seen any of the late shows. I'm trying to start and know I will start because we have to give Letterman the ratings he deserves, and also because Craig Ferguson recently surpassed Conan on the ratings. AND YOU KNOW THAT IS WHAK!!!!!!!! (Is that how you spell "whak"?)
Re: meg – Oh but Bill O'Reilly has soooooooo much class, being an addict while criticizing other addicts saying they should go to jail, and criticizing Bill Clinton, and other people in the public eye while sending sexually harassing phone messages to some lady. He's is such a typical Republican. How is it possible that there is always such extreme hypocrisy in that party? It's Dave's show and he can do what he wants when he interviews people, just like O'Reilly insults and refuses to listen and compromise with other people whose opinions differ from his.
Re: jean – ExACTLY!! FOR THE PAST 7 YEARS, REPUBLICANS ARE THE BUTT OF MOST JOKES BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN THE RULING PARTY FOR 2 TERMS NOW, AND CALIFORNIA HAS A REPUBLICAN "GOVERNATOR" AT THE MOMENT. by November when the dems. take the Whitehouse back, it'll be the Dems. who will be the butt of all jokes all over Late Night and The John Stewart Show and The Stephen Colbert show. It's not a big deal. I'm a hardcore lefty and I remember laughing my ass off at all those Clinton jokes, just as I laughed at all those Bush jokes. Dave is an equal opportunity guy, even with celebrities. That's what makes his show so cool to watch and so much more interesting than Leno who only seems to have guests to get high ratings. Dave seems to want to have a fun or interesting interview and he'll invite Heidi and Spencer but he'll have a political reporter or an Army expert followed by a performance by U2 or something. His comedy is quirky and much more different than Leno whose comedy and interview skills are very "vanilla". As far as I'm concerned, that makes Dave (and Conan) the best of the Late Night shows!!
Re: Boom – You have a really boring sense of humor don't you? You might have no sense of humor at all if you don't think Conan is funny. If he's not funny at all then why was his show on re-runs at Comedy Central? Maybe you just don't get that kind of sense of humor. That's fine, but I think Conan will be a great replacement to Jay because people need to see his show! I really hope Jay leaves this September so i can get tickets to see Conan (he's coming to L.A.!!!). The only downside is that it will be against Dave's show and that's too bad because it will be hard to choose between the two shows!!!
Re: meg –
You are so right. Letterman looks down on everybody who thinks differently and last time I looked that is not what a talk show is for.
Re: Fabul – –hate much??
I used to like Dave but at some time u have to say goodbye. Why do we keep people on tv for so long. Half of his guest done know who he is……he is not in touch with us anymore just with being "david letterman" good moments but its time to produce or go behind the scene. Saw jay z on his show and he thought he was an alien………..retire already hand over the chair
It's the guests he has on. I tune in when they are interresting, but lately they have been bad. Also, that demographic has to be in bed by 10:30 at the latest cuz we all have to work our asses off to afford the prices for food and gas that Bush has ran up. So, in a nut shell…IT IS BUSHES FAULT NO ONE IS WATCHING LETTERMAN.
I don't watch Dave because I have to get up for f-ing work in the morning!!!
I love Dave's show. I've been watching for 20 years. I enjoy that he has on the O'jays, the Stylistics, Al Green, Donna Summer, Darlene Love. You don't get a chance to see these performers anymore………..Thanks Dave
