you know that recovering addicts are actually encouraged to smoke, as it gives them something to distract them from more dangerous substances. this is the case with half the people you scold for smoking. get over it.
Re: mark – No, recovered (notice I didn't say recovering) addicts are not encouraged to smoke. Addicts are encouraged to drop all of their addictions at one time, in one fall swoop. At least that is they was I way taught, and it was very effective for me. I was an enormously heavy drinker and smoker for over twenty years. Finally one morning, I just couldn't get out of bed, I was way to weak. My husband called the doctor, and beleive it or not, in this day and age, he actually came to my house. He gave me a strong sedetive, but I was still was very rocky for the next several days, being without booze and cigarettes. But you can get thru it. Anyone can. You just have to hold real tight and grit your teeth for several days, and then you will be just fine. Definitely consult your general practioner before quiting very heavy drinking cold turkey. Otherwise, you have to step down heavy drinking very gradually, otherwise you may end up in DT'S. But quiting smoking is very, very doable. You just have to make up your mind you are going to do it, and aknowledge that you will be very uncomfortable for several days. But the rewards of complete and total sobriety, and a life without addictions are immeasurable. I am not an AA fan, by the way, I beleive in self help, and healing from the family and faith.
Gee, I smoked while I gave my baby boy a bottle. Guess what, he never even had a cold until he was 2 years old, when I enrolled him in day care. He's now past 40, and he has never taken up smoking cigarettes. He doesn't seem to have any medical problems, with me smoking around him when he was growing up. He is not allergic to anything, either.
I guess you will all say, "I was just lucky". Right!
