Re: tanya – "fighting for her life" . . . last I checked, she's not putting up a fight whatsoever. After being diagnosed with Emphysema, she lights up a cigarette. She's been in and out of rehab several times and it's not doing any good. She doesn't want to help herself. She doesn't have the will power to help herself. It was her lack of will power that led to the addiction in the first place.
People need to stop coddling her! How is blaming Perez going to help Amy? It's not, you morons! Telling her that it's not her fault is not only a lie, but it hurts her in the long run. She needs to be told that the addiction is her fault, not the drug's fault. She also needs to be told that the rehab clinics and doctors aren't going to pull her out of this mess. The only person who can do that is herself. The clinics will do what they are designed to do, and that is provide support.
In conclusion, I'm all for getting Amy Winehouse a drill seargent type rehab doctor to follow her around 24-7 and be her will power since she seems to have none. I believe that's the only way to help her at this point. (Maybe he can even get her to eat a sandwhich.)

could not "stop" myself from using. Every morning before
I got wasted, I would look in the bath mirror and feel the
torment of not being able to get off crack.
It took me 3 attempts at treatment and about 3 years of falling
on my ass. It took love and support of my family to get better.
I knew that I was an addict. If you have never felt the anguish of
going through complete physical and mental hell, please get educated about
addiction and recovery.

Re: Craig – No, I have not been addicted to any substances. I had the common sense and the will power to not do it in the first place. I have had experience with countless friends who have battled addiction. Some have won the fight; some have not faired as well. No, it isn't an easy battle, nor have I ever implied that you can just wake up one day and say "I'm not going to be an addict anymore" and be done with it. But the person has to be willing to fight for it, and fight for it hard. One thing I've noticed throughout my experience is that as a friend, you have to support them. But at the same time, you have to give them tough love. If you coddle them too much, they will fall back down. The people around Amy are probably (hopefully) looking out for her best interests, but blaming the addiction and coddling her will lead her to not step up and take responsibility. Rip that cigarette from her mouth, cut her off from any drug contacts, and get her some help Johnny Cash style. That's what it's going to take and I hope to see her back on her feet again.
