Coldplay Effs With the 'Little People'

Filed under: Anglophilia > Music Minute > Coldplay

chrismartin1.jpg

Coldplay and their record label are giving undiscovered bands the chance to 'open' for the group in San Jose, Chicago, Philly, Hartford, Washington D.C. and Boston by entering an online contest.

To enter, bands need to submit an original song performance via YouTube.

For those of you who are considering the contest — read the contest rules and fine print closely.

You could see your YouTube performance being used in ways you're not happy with and you won't be able to do anything about it!

There's even a line in the rules that says that Coldplay's record company can place your band's song on a compilation album and they wouldn't be required to pay up for usage.

It gets worse.

By submitting your bands' performance of an original song, Coldplay's record people have the exclusive option to sign your band to what appears to be a crappy record deal.

Is playing with Coldplay really worth giving up even an ounce of control over your original material?

Think about it hard!

With all his money can't Chris Martin buy some decent TEETH? Holy fuck his teeth are nasty in that retarded video. Actually, he's quite ugly. Maybe he should borrow some of Gwen's Makeup. He already wears her panties.

Perez, I get how you try to make a whole "soap opera" out of celebrities.. you pick ones you like and don't like. But really, I'm almost embarrassed for you when I read your HORRENDOUS "journalism" on why some people are "douche bags." But hey, you're getting money for now so I guess that's all you care about.

This is only because Coldplay doesn't want to get sued by some shitty band that does get discovered.

They're just protecting themselves, that's all.

I don't quite understand why you all bash Chris and the band. I'm not talking about the music (everyone has different tastes) but their attitude. How could you find them selfish, too self-confident or narcissist…?? Chris is the most insecure guy ever…Read his interviews. He often mention in interviews that they pretty suck apart but together, the magic works. He even said he feels ashamed of coldplay when he sees how Muse member are so good individually….! I don't know if you see often rockstar saying such thing about themselves and being so harsh about their own work…!!!
As for Chris showing off…well, watch Adam Levine from Maroon 5, and you'll see a real egocentric who loves himself!! (and I say this as a M5 fan!) Chris is more in the spotlight bc he's the singer, and it's the case for every band! he never put himself in front just for the joy of it… Again watch him in interview, he's one of the most shy guy ever…(so british so XD)

Don't like their music: fine. But don't trash people when the facts prove you're kinda wrong….

Wow what's your fuckin' problem with coldplay particulary with Chris ? I mean just because he missed up an interview you don't like him ! And what about all the work he does huh ? What about maketradefair.com ? What about the great artist he is ? You suck perez.

they already stole a song and my bet is they're running out of talent/creativity thus the contest. Just another rich man trying to steal from the poor man

    Re: travi
The demo of Viva la vida was record before - BEFORE - befoooooore the concert of this anonymous band!!!! Material fact!!!
How many band like that have claimed that their work were stolen just to get in the spotlight??!! The answer is: too many!! And this is an another case here!
So stop bringing this 'affair' to bring Coldplay down, because there is NO case!!!

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YOURE STILL JEALOUS that you're not famous. OH WELL. If I had a band, I'd join. trust me, YOU'RE NOT THAT BIG OF AN INFLUENCE ON PEOPLE……

I don't get why you are hating on Coldplay….maybe Chris Martin turned you down? You used to in previous archived posts praise them, then all of a sudden you are on their ass (or you wish). Just publicity, I guess, since they are so popular, it gives you some attention to your fat ass, like it is not noticed anyway, chubs.

  14. 114

So if you open for them do they have the right to steal your material and use it in their next itunes commercial?

thats coldplays record company effing with the little people not coldplay……record companys are effed!!! they always have done stupid contract shit like this, and always will….it really has nothing to do with coldplay. Do you just not like chris martin or the enire band? because the whole band isnt chris martin….and there music doesnt suck, chris martin can be as big of a douche as he wants because A) hes talented B) shouldnt really give a shit anyways and C) is very very rich.
no wonder there music doesnt appeal to someone who likes mariah carey and madonna and katy perry and kylie manogue, obvioulsy your ears arent tuned right to appreciate good music, but that might be the gayness too.

    117

Looks like the agreement has changed…no more talk about recording contracts…or compilation albums.

  18. Chris says – reply to this

    118

It didn't post my last comment (perhaps because I included the URL of the official rules), but I've read all the rules to this contest, and there is NO mention of inclusion on a compilation album or signing a recording contract. This leads me to believe one of three things:

    1) Someone changed the rules to remove this (maybe based upon this post; in that case, kudos Perez).

    2) Perez is speaking of some OTHER contract provider, perhaps to the winner of this contract.

    3) This is libelous.

I'd be interested to read a clarification on this.

  19. Chris says – reply to this

The line in the contract that may confuse some people is this:

"Each member of the winning band grants permission for Sponsor and those acting under its authority to use his/her name, photograph, voice and/or likeness, for advertising and/or publicity purposes, in any and all media now known or hereinafter invented without territorial or time limitations and without additional compensation."

This line, or something in it, is in every contest that you sign up for. Read the fine print of your state lottery if you don't believe me. It doesn't give anyone the right to your SONGS (you own the copyright on them). What it does is give the contest the right to use your name and likeness. Therefore next year, they can say, "Last year's winner was LOCAL BAND X," and show a picture of the band on stage with Coldplay. … And yes, they can continue to show that picture (provided their photographer took it) even if you're big and famous without paying you a dime. Doesn't sound like that bad of a deal.

Also, for all those bashing Coldplay, their management, label, whomever, the sponsor of this contest is LiveNation, a large, independent concert promoter. That's not saying that Coldplay and their label, management, etc., aren't jerks. … But I'll let you know if I ever meet them.
