Starbucks is closing 500 of its stores and cutting 7% of its work force.

As many as 12,000 full-time and part-time retail positions will be eliminated with the store closures all over America.

This will be just grrrreat for our economy!

Oh, STFU, Perez - you know NOTHING about the economy (or anything else, for that matter). Starbucks foolishly oversaturated the market and no one wants to pay 5 bucks a pop for mediocre coffee anymore. It's GOOD for the economy to see big, corporate monopolies lose their grip - now, hopefully, some independent competition will be able to get back into the game. Yeah, it sucks for that 7% but working at Starbucks as a barista isn't exactly a long-term, lucrative career move anyway.

The writing was on the wall with the one-hour-nationwide-store-closures-for-training-publicity stunt. Sucks for the employees, the company, the landlords, the customers, the economy. This country just can't get up and stand on its own two feet.

McDonalds tried to get Starbucks to pair up, but the Green wanted none of the low class Yellow. So SNAP! Starbucks, you got PWND!

They also need to figure out a way to make a normal cup of coffee (like Tim Horton's up in Canada). Their current cup of house coffee makes me have to go poop INSTANTLY.

This has nothing to do with the economy. It is because Starbucks over saturated the market. They opened too many stores in the first place. Perez is an idiot.

I work at Starbucks and to anyone who claims that it doesn't take talent or skill or intelligence to be a barista, try working at one of the busiest stores in Washington DC in the middle of a blackout rush. Imagine that while you're at work YOU have someone standing at your desk with their arms crossed repeatedly asking if you have your work done yet. Try making $30,0000+ worth in sales before noon while being incredibly understaffed- all of which has a lot to do with poor service customers may receive every now and then. I'm not making excuses for laziness or general bad attitudes, but a Starbucks partners put up with a LOT of mistreatment from customers which they then blame on not yet having their coffee.

It's sad that the stores are closing, but if you thought that your morning stop to Starbucks took too long before, condensing the option of locations isn't going to help the matter.

People don't give nearly enough credit to Starbucks employees, and I say this as a person who once swore that I would never go to Starbucks and loved my independent coffee shop. Then I moved to a major city where there ARE no independent coffee shops and I work for a company I agree with and love.

There's a bit more to the story. What a surprise. You failed to mention that new U.S. company-operated Starbucks locations (somewhere just under 200) are also projected to be opened in fiscal 2009. So if we are looking at the net impact, they will only lose approximately 400 company-operated stores in the U.S. next year. Think of it this way, only 8 per state. Not a big impact. I have 8 Starbucks locations within 10 minutes of my home.

They are closing their underperforming company-operated stores which only makes sense from a business standpoint. Why would any successful company choose to continue to operate locations that are losing money?

  18. Frank says – reply to this

    118

    1) Starbucks is closing 600, but opening 200 new locations in the U.S. So it's a net loss of 400.

    2) Starbucks doesn't really make its money selling coffee. It makes the bulk of its money selling what are, essentially, shakes that use coffee. If you just buy a normal cup of coffee from Starbucks, it's a little under $2. (Still kind of expensive, but to say they sell "$5 coffee" is a bit of an exaggeration.)

    3) Yes, Starbucks has over-expanded in the U.S.. I think they should totally scale back, and close even more stores in the U.S.. They should probably focus on expanding in other countries in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. There are more than enough Starbucks locations in the U.S..

  19. Coral says – reply to this

    119

This was Starbucks' business plan from the very beginning… to expand rapidly to kill the competition, then scale back for maintenance. I mean, come on…. no one in their right mind would build a lasting business model based on having their company on every block. Having their company store in lots of places, yes, but not on the same block for heaven's sake. Starbucks was in my knowledge the first company to do it, and when I saw it happening I thought that it was temporary.. that they'd close some stores once they closed down alllll the mom and pop shops in town.

This is all pure speculation, but my predictions have come true.
Now, they can remodel their company to appear to be kinda "old school"… you know, like those fake kitchy chain restaurants like Applebees and shit.. they plaster the walls with shit giving the impression of home cooking, family values, pride in product, etc. Strabucks will start to market itself as going back to its roots a little, and buy itself some "family values" (or whatever "values" that the market likes… perhaps buying itself a "green image"). So what you have in the end is a totally FAKE, commercialized, corporate substitute for the old real mom and pop coffee shops. And everyone bought into it.
    "This is me at Starbucks."

    - Criticize the government (specifically Republicans)
    - Then go on to say how expensive Starbucks is
    - Maybe mention how many starbucks there are on every corner
    - Proceed to say this will help the smaller coffee shops which taste oh so much better
    - Yet, hypocritically state that they enjoy the coffee of Starbucks

As a partner of Starbucks for over 12 years reading some of these comments crack me up. We absolutely have supported our troops in Iraq, just in my store over a years period we sent over 500 lbs of coffee to our troops, just in one store alone! Its funny how people are saying yay, Starbucks is out, but its just not true. We have over 15,000 locations and are closing 600 underperforming stores. Thats not even going to make a dent! Plus we will still continue to open new stores, especially in NY metro which is where I live. Most of the people that are working in those stores will be sent to another store because we are always looking for more great people. P.S. there was no such thing as specialty coffee shops before we came along, we made a market for a lot of those shops that we supposedly shut down. Its unfortunate that people dont do any research before bashing a company that is so good to its people.

And the landlords will have to go back to charging reasonable rents again. The economy is slowing because, for the past 7 or 8 years, we Americans have been living in a plastic bubble - real estate isn't tanking, It's just settling back into its REAL values, which is still ahead of where it was BEFORE the boom. We Americans have been living way beyond our means because we can buy everything on the cheap from Costco and Walmart, without any thought to the real cost to our economy by purchasing the bulk of our goods from China, etc. The economy will get back on its feet when we get back to reality.

I wouldn't brag too loud about donating 500 lbs. of coffee to the troops, especially when Starbucks is buying their coffee of the backs of some of the poorest nations in the world for about 1 cent to the dollar.

Re: kris – Unfortunately, Kris, Starbucks exists in just about every country, but not to the extreme you seem to have them in the US. As a joke, my brother bought me a mug from a Starbucks in Bangkok with an elephant on one side and the company logo on the other. The most disgustingly located Starbucks I have ever seen was in Canterbury in England, where it was right next to the centuries old gate which led into Canterbury Cathedral. It was doing a very, brisk trade from all the tourists. Seems like corporate greed has finally caught up with Starbucks. Somehow I doubt the "big boys" in the company will be hurt by this. They always make sure they are well protected.

Working there, I know what goes into that drink. It's not overpriced, it's quality. If you want a shitty cup of McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts coffee for a cheap price, be my guest. If you can't tell the difference, then you don't know as much about coffee as you think you do.

Good riddance. Overpriced. Snotty. Trying too hard to be cool, and they're not. Many years ago, like 20 - they were cutting edge — with a wine-tasting-like shop at Pike's Market in Seattle. Now they're the McDonald's of caffeine. Horrid. Peet's will take over if they don't plan a shop every 10 yards. Starbuck's blew their own cool, jumped their own shark. Sorry for the workers, but the place has become the Wal-Mart of coffee-shops. And their pastries look, feel and taste like flaking sneakers and look like dandruff falling off of a geek's greasy balding head.
Bad stuff. Can't they at least find a decent bakery with which to affiliate themselves in various locales - promote other local businesses? the pastries taste like they've been trucked in for a week - stale, crumbling (and not in a good way), tasteless, and the breakfast English Muffin things taste like plastic snacks prepared in an Easy-Bake oven. Went from potential greatness to greedy global takeover, to pathetic has-been. Sorry for the workers. Seek out Peet's. Coffee Bean & Tea is the next loser ubiquitous coffee purveyor — avoid like the flu.

Re: kate – Uhm… so how is this job different from any other job out there? You baristas are not special, more talented, or more over-worked than the rest of us. You're just saying how busy and ridiculous your job is while the rest of us go, "And…..?" Sorry, I work for law enforcement. I'm going to bet that if something goes awry in a lot of jobs out there, it's going to have much more of an impact on society than if you forget to put soy milk in some yuppie's morning java. You guys are what you are, coffee runners. You're no less busy or more busy than the rest of us. A Starbucks "blackout rush in DC" is the Starbucks equivalent to a record monthly indoctment load at the county prosecutors' office (my job). Stop making yourselves sound so high and mighty. You make COFFEE for a living….they employ 17 year olds that haven't graduated high school yet in that position.

Talk to the people who get extra dry cappuccinos and find out if just anyone can do it. Those people with insanely pretentious drinks annoy us, too. But we have to do it because it's about making pretentious people happy. If you want shitty coffee, go to Dunkin Donuts. The prices really aren't drastically lower that Starbucks. We have quality standards. Take some time to figure that out and you would know. Or don't, I don't care. But don't insult us. Please.

If you think making coffee, getting pastries out of a display and making the correct change is a diffucult job about which you should brag about the amount of difficult and mind bending work you do, this must be one of your first trips into the working world. Put your job into the GRAND scheme of things. Where does it fall in your mind? And FYI- I live in New England and many of the Starbucks up here are going or have gone out of business because the majority of New Englanders prefer their $1.80 cup of coffee from Dunkins over the overpriced, burnt crap that Starbucks sells. Dunkins is packed while Starbucks is a ghost town. It might be a regional preference….but apparently that's all it took to get Starbucks to close some of its doors… just a few people who refused to pay the same price for a cup of coffee as they would for a gallon of gasoline.

    Re: KrissyKat

as an assistant store manager of a Starbucks in NYC, I can certainly say that a workday entails more than what you are giving credit to. I don't think any partners who have responded are trying to appear high and mighty or as though what we go through in a typical day is any more difficult than what anyone else does. But your overall attitude and obvious superior mindset doesn't make our jobs any easier and I'm sure it doesn't make you a happier person to belittle what anyone at Starbucks does ( or maybe, it does…)

Starbucks has some of the best people working for our company. It takes a great outgoing personality, patience, the ability to multi task as well as a VERY strong work ethic. I'm sure you know some of this to be true from your time working at McDonald's. And I'm sure you remember what it's like to be undermined and belittled… is it really worth it to keep it going just because you've found a job that you feel "better" or that makes you seem more successful? I am not an office person. I worked in an office after graduating college and was miserable… I need to be constantly moving and on the go and have interaction with people. This doesn't make me an idiot who can't handle a typical 9-5 job, this makes me one of the millions of Starbucks partners who has found a job that works for me and I love.

Shut up you moron. If I have to say, 'a grande regular coffee with no room' and have to repeat 'no room' every time when they ask if I want room for milk immediately after my order, you are all morons. How hard is it to pour a cup of regular coffee????

Not everyone wants a full-calorie, full fat + extra sugar in their friggin coffee!!!

Thank God. There's this one shopping center near my house (N. Colorado Springs, few miles from New Life Church) that has two Starbucks in it. One in King Soopers, and another in a separate building. Ridiculous!

This has nothing to do with the economy. Starbucks over-saturated with way too many stores and prices too high. There are ten Starbucks within a mile radius of my house and a cup of coffee costs about five times what it should. They're victims of bad business not a sour economy.

so you think all baristas are snobby and don't know anything about coffee? sure there are a few, but the majority of baristas know what's what with coffee

    Re: patsy
Patsy, you're clueless asshole. Bush has done an excellent job with the economy with tax cuts and fewer trade restrictions. It's these high gas prices, 100% the fault of stupid Democrats who won't allow us to drill for more, that have weighed down the economy.

Who cares? Overpriced and obnoxious. Would much rather support a local café or coffe house. But who has five bucks these days for a daily cuppa when they have to be worrying about home heating oil reaching predicted prices of probably $7 by next year and gas for driving, who knows?

This country is fucked and we can think George Bush, the speculators and all who are profiteering from the oil business.

Hey, there will soon be a lot of out of work actors, too, and who has money for the movies in theaters these days?

    Re: Lolo

Oh honey puh-lease! You talk absolute bullshit! Have a good read of the comments here. People are no longer willing to pay $6 for coffee. Either lower your prices or keep enjoying the slow down in customers. And don't try to feed us bs about what a great company it is because we all know that big corporations are evil. Tell us about how much you actually pay for the coffee from the poor African nations. Those poor guys work to the bone and you pay them hardly anything for the coffee which you overcharge peeps for. Good riddence. Enjoy the slump in profits!!!

Re: Blunt – But who has contributed to the high rise of gas prices? Bush and his cronies are in the oil business and their war was driven for their own selfish economic gain which is now reaping its rewards. But I do agree with you: we need to drill for our own oil supply in North America and Americans just need to drive less anyway in smaller cars. Take that you suburban yuppies in your pimped out Suburbans and SUVs.

Well, as most people have figured out, it really isn't a surprise. Starbuck's expanded way too fast and watered down their image. (That is what the current CEO stated a while ago) We really don't need one on every corner, grocery store and in Target. But it is a sign of a bad economy. I've noticed that our local Starbucks is a lot less crowded. But why would that shock anyone? We need to fill our gas tanks before we buy the grande. So Kate, I'm not really worried about the line at the Starbucks if operations are condenced. There are fewer people in the line, so it should end up being about the same. Me? I take my cup of coffee from the pot at home in a cup at least four days a week. To give credit to the baristas, you do an honest job and get paid for it. It is no more or less important or difficult than the supermarket checker, salesclerk, or waitress - and there is no need to ridicule the baristas. A lot of them look like students, trying to get through school. I feel badly for the people who will get layed off. Hopefully there will be transfers and attrition that reduce their numbers. With 600 stores closing, there will be some jobs lost.
