Former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, who was kidnapped by FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) back in 2002, has finally been rescued.

Six years in captivity??? So awful!

The rescue operation resulted in the freeing of Betancourt and 14 other hostages, three of them Americans, which were all held in the jungles of South America.

The three Americans had been held captive since February 13th, 2003, when their single-engine plane unfortunately crashed in mountains south of Bogota. Two other men on the plane were shot to death by FARC.

As for Betancourt, her situation has attracted worldwide attention when she was abducted on February 23rd, 2002 after she entered rebel territory while campaigning for the Colombian presidency.

The news of her deteriorating health was made public after FARC released six hostages this year.

One of those freed, Luis Eladio Perez, says he last saw her in February of 2008 but that she had been suffering from chronic liver problems since 2004.

He adds, "Ingrid made a sign for me to go to the bathroom and she did the same and we were able to talk for about five minutes. I saw she was very ill and wasting away. She looked much worse than in that 'proof-of-life' video the rebels filmed in October. She told me to stay calm and that the guerillas were giving her vitamins and calcium."

Ingrid, who has both Colombian and French citizenship, even got a personal plea made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to her captors back in April.

He said, "Ingrid's health has deteriorated so much that her life is in danger. Ingrid is in danger of imminent death. You have the power to save a woman from death and revive hope for all the other hostages still held."

Let's hope she recuperates quickly.

Re: VOXIE – wow aren't you ignorant? apparently you are living in the past..I was born in Colombia but have lived in the US for the past 7 years, ever since Uribe has taken up the presidency everyone living in Colombia has noticed a huge difference, specially when I go back and see how much safer it is, he has helped eliminate many guerrilla groups like the ELN and paramilitary groups, yeah we have a long way to go but this is story is just another example of how much we are progressing I hope this was a huge blow to the FARC and we will soon be able to see all of the other 700+ captives free

  21. BryGu says – reply to this

    121

Who cares about her? Betancourt is a pompous French woman who went back to Columbia to try to be their president and KNEW she would be kidnapped when she did…and then went into rebel territory.

On the other hand, thank God the AMERICANs are back safe and sound. THESE are the ones you should be talking about, Mario.

"Old news" you ignorant motherfu(kers! This happened just yesterday around noon. I'm very glad you posted this since it is very easy for the foreign media to forget all the hostages the more they've been gone.

Personally, I consider this amiracle. I am colombian and even I do not side with the current government's militaristic ways, I am well aware thay Ingrid would've died in captivity had she not been rescued by force.

AS for you who say Ingrid cost france millions of euros… yo need to get your facts straight: military $$$ have only been recieved form the U.S. and the U.S. only, in France it was all politics and drawing attention to her situation. And calling her a bitch? Get a fucking brain! Think about the last 6 and a half years of live and imagien erasing everything and being held in the jungle. Ignorant. Ingrid i as well one of the most respected constitional and human rights scholars in Colombia AND in France.

Thank you so much for posting this! This has definately been great news for Colombians all over the world. I am so happy that she and the other hostages were released safely and i applaud the way the Colombian military accomplished this difficult task. I hope the rest get released soon! Que Viva Colombia!!Paz y Libertad!!

  26. Karen says – reply to this

    126

First of all let me just say that coke-head Chavez and the good-for-nothing American president had nothing to do with the resue of Ingrid or the other 14 captured. This was all a hush plan of the COLOMBIAN MILITARY. This is just another step toward bringing peace to COLOMBIA. The fact that they lied to the FARC and did not use their weapons once to rescue the 15 that were kidnapped is amazing!! This just goes to show that we dont need any kind of violence in order to bring peace to a beautiful country. Im so glad Perez put this up no his site. Its just such a shame we have ignorant people here that only care about themselves and not know what goes on in the world. Ingrid is a beautiful person inside and out. I'm happy the 3 Americans as well as the 11 Colombian policemen are home with their families and they can now say they are LIBRE!!! We still have more to overcome, this is just one step closer. QUE VIVA COLOMBIA!!! Also for those of you who are COLOMBIAN and read this don't forget to wear white on July 20th The Colombian Independence!!

Re: BryGu – wow how ignorant can you be!!! She is not french she is pure colombian….and she has 2 citizenships from france and colombia….yes she went into rebel territory to try to resolve and maintain peace with the colombian governement to stop kidnaps. Who in their right mind would do that!!! SHE DID!!! It takes a person with great courage and karisma to do such a thing like she did. Get your facts straight. Your just another ignorant american who doesnt give a shit about what goes on then your own kind.

Re: BryGu – You are the one who needs to get his facts straight, learn to express yoursel with respect, I am COLOMBIAN, I live here, I've heard every news report ever since she was kidnapped and felt in PERSON the pain of having a member of your family taken by these people. So stop being so ignorant, think, she was strong, she didn't take cr@p from Las FARC, she protested any way she could and she is a true living example of strenght. She should be an inspiration and not an excuse for talking sh!t.
