"Plasma, LCDs blamed for accelerating global warming"

Are they serious???? CLICK HERE to read the article accompanying this headline.

Plasma, LCDs blamed for accelerating global warming

A gas used in the making of flat screen televisions, nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), is being blamed for damaging the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.

Almost half of the televisions sold around the globe so far this year have been plasma or LCD TVs.

But this boom could be coming at a huge environmental cost.

The gas, widely used in the manufacture of flat screen TVs, is estimated to be 17,000 times as powerful as carbon dioxide.

Ironically, NF3 is not covered by the Kyoto protocol as it was only produced in tiny amounts when the treaty was signed in 1997.

Levels of this gas in the atmosphere have not been measured, but scientists say it is a concern and are calling for it to be included in any future emissions cutting agreement.

Professor Michael Prather from the University of California has highlighted the issue in an article for the magazine New Scientist.

He has told ABC's The World Today program that output of the gas needs to be measured.

"One of my titles for this paper was Going Below Kyoto's Radar. It's the kind of gas that's made in huge amounts," he said.

"Not only is it not in the Kyoto Treaty but you don't even have to report it. That's the part that worries me."

He estimates 4,000 tons of NF3 will be produced in 2008 and that number is likely to double next year.

"We don't know what's emitted, but what they're producing every year dwarfs these giant coal-fired power plants that are like the biggest in the world," he said.

"And it dwarfs two of the Kyoto gases. So the real question we don't know is how much is escaping and getting out."

Dr Paul Fraser is the chief research scientist at the CSIRO's marine and atmospheric research centre, and an IPCC author.

He says without measuring the quantity of NF3 in the atmosphere it is unclear what impact it will have on the climate.

"We haven't observed it in the atmosphere. It's probably there in very low concentrations," he said.

"The key to whether it's a problem or not is how much is released to the atmosphere."

UNTIL scientists are free to propose OTHER theories about the earth- even refuting long term warming- this will all just be bs. Where were all those hurricanes last year? Why was June the coldest on record in Seattle? It's easy to pick and choose things to support theories- but the earth can warm ALL on its own. The sun gets hotter and cooler, too. Overreacting is causing job losses, and hunger, and foolish redirection of federal dollars. The people screaming now are the same ones opposed to nuclear power.

Dr. Prather is a widely respected climate scientist (part of the Nobel prize-winning IPCC team). I come to this site for entertainment, but I can't just sit back when I read the kind of comments below. Our actions, and particularly our product choices, have far-reaching impacts, whether it be global climate change, localized pollution, loss of habitat, etc. It's selfish & anthropocentric to ignore those impacts. Since the global population isn't getting any smaller, we all need to work harder to keep our footprint small & live with less…because there isn't going to be more oil, more natural resources, more freshwater–those are shrinking resources, peeps.

The bitch spend hours in there everyday squeezing out the 12 Hot Pockets she eats every day. her weight is now causing the toilet to sag. She does smell like a dog, but she is pale as a ghost cause she just sits inside smoking her generic cigarettes all day. Fuck. I hate being white.

What they don't mention in this article is that flat screens also use more electricity than regular tv's. So even if you already own one, you are creating a bigger carbon footprint. Talk about the tip of the iceberg: Al Gore may only be talking about the convenient ways to conserve electricity and gas now, here is the inconvenient part… Any electricity or gas use would be bad for the environment. As in turning on a computer, heating your house, lights, any tv, your cel phone, etc. Anyone ready for caveman living?

We produce enough our our own co2 for the plants just by breathing out. with the MASSIVE amounts of trees we're cutting down, there aren't enough plants to absorb it, causing the atmosphere to take it all on — thus, global warming.

Everytime Brangelina saves another child, the earth's overal temp. heats up too.

But in all seriousness… to the idiot who claims that it's cold in the Bay area nd therefore that means no global warming… you're an idiot. Just because overall temps are rising (notice winters are NOT the same as when we were children) doesn't mean there won't be low temps as well. We haven't hit land of the lost yet.

And I think "global warming" is a natural part of the earth's life… no, we're probably not helping it out with all the shit we do… but if anything I think man is more responsible for CANCER than global warming.

Madonna has asked troubled Britney Spears to join her on tour — and pals hope she will give guidance to the young star. The Queen Of Pop, 49, is set to record a video with Britney, 26, in New York tomorrow.

The footage will be broadcast on huge screens as part of Madge's Sticky and Sweet tour, which kicks off on August 23. Madonna has also invited Britney to appear in person on some of the world tour dates. A source close to Britney revealed: “They are recording a video together on Sunday that will provide the backdrop for part of Madonna’s show. And they are talking about Britney taking the stage on a few of the dates too. There’s no doubt that her and Britney together will spell fireworks again."

“It’s hoped that Madonna can help Britney get back to her old self. Appearing with Madonna would really kickstart her career again. She’s been there and done it so could provide some great guidance.” Britney and Madonna stunned fans at the MTV Music Awards in 2003 by sharing a passionate kiss. The source added: “If anyone can mastermind a Britney comeback, it’s Madonna. “Lots of people will be hoping there’s a repeat of the kissing incident a few years ago.”

Madonna’s new tour to support album Hard Candy promises to be her sexiest yet. She will turn 50 a week before it kicks off in Cardiff — but still plans to shock fans with a controversial stage show. The singer will even pretend to be mummified as part of a routine

ONLY in America it seems to be a NEW(!) topic/issue!

Don t ask me for DETAILS, everything can be read on the internet (in English, as you do not bother to learn any language also) for years and decades now! @Justi:
Yes, I and we KNOW! For this reason, a lot of people around the world - and even more so SCIENTISTS - are angry about th eU.S. Government's boycotting any attempts to STOP (this no longer is FEASIBLE/POSSIBLE according to Scientists NOT subsidized by GOVERNMENT!) or at least SLOW DOWN the catastrophes our way of living and ignorance and selfishness is doing to the climate and animals and the oceans and the entire SYSTEM…This COSTS money, and America and your government is SELFISH and only thinks about their PRESENT life and not about in what condition they ll pass the planet on to their CHILDREN and next generations! A lot of damage has happened already and it will take HUNDREDS(!) of years to counterbalance the damage done alreasy, even if we completely STOPPEED NOW with polluting and using up!

    Why New Orleans is sunk
A geologist explains how Mother Nature has wrought revenge on an area where humans walled off the river and drained the marshlands. And by the way, California, you're next.

    The next New Orleans

"No one can say they didn't see it coming"
In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war.

Weekends really suck dirty ass here. Hardly any news. Perez you really need to do your job on weekends. Please nothing about Mandonna though. This talentless old whore with cereal bowls implanted inside her cheeks should be put out to pasture since she is a cow.

TMZ is better than this place. They update with more interesting material anyway. All Perez does is kiss that herpes infested Paris and talk shit about that Willis girl. I always laugh when Perez refers to himself as "we" or "us." LOL.

    A deluge waiting to happen
Nature will do as nature does, but humans are to blame for the deadly Midwestern floods.

    Anti-science conservatives must be stopped
Americans must not allow global warming deniers to block the policies needed to avert catastrophic climate change. Our future is at stake.

On energy, McCain sounds a lot like Cheney
The GOP nominee wants to distance himself from Bush on climate change, but he'd do better to emulate Jimmy Carter than the vice president.

Slick John McCain and the offshore oil ruse
The safety and economics of offshore drilling are distractions from the much larger challenges that humanity faces: Climate change and peak oil.

    Re: Duck – @pcm:
Ok, German Ducky, #1, I am at no loss for words on arguments and facts. I responded to a bigoted, generalized statement to some else; for whatever reason GD, you decided to chime your 2 cents. That was the basis for my response. There is global climate change, though I am not convinced that it is "man" driven nor as dire as Al Whore and others with self-interest and profit motive would have us believe. #2, Ain't your "darling" Zsa-Zsa, and I did not make a broad based, "all Germans are Nazis statement", that was YOUR reading something that wasn't there, because it fits your preformed response. I have seen your comments before, they are predictable and regurgitated over and over, German Ducky. #3. The Colonies bought the slaves from their own country men, and they were freed ages ago. (My ancestors were still in Germany and Ireland at the time, so I am as personally accountable for slavery as you are. #4, Native Americans, (not Indians, they come from India, idiot) that was horrific during colonial times when the settlers first came here. It has been acknowledged…again, USA wasn't trying to take over the world just 60 years and annihilate a total people. We progressed since slavery and Colonial times.

Re: Duck – #5, Vietnam and Korea, technically we were stopping the spread of communism, but politicians were involved, so….they screwed the pooch. There, now GERMAN Ducky, please brush up on your English, your grammar sucks. Now, my guests are here to contiune our Independance Day weekend celebration, 232 years old….hmm, yes we have made mistakes, as a growing "child" does. What pray tell is ancient Germany's excuse! Tata, let's see how your preformed comments can respond to this, weibchen!

Get a life you turds. Perez has just as much of a right to celebrate the holiday weekend than you guys do. He's one person, not a billion idiots like TMZ. I'd much rather wait for Perez's updates than go to that crapsite!

I'm heading over to TMZ to catch the celeb news. I'll check back in in a couple of days to see if Mario caught up and provided a no doubt grammatically incorrect "spin" on whatever is going on in Hollywood. Smart move, Perez…leaving a globally hot topic to keep bloggers distracted from the fact that you would be taking the weekend off, again ;*) Love your new hair by the way, very Elvis chic.

Yeah, and the Reverend Ysrael Hawkins, the latest messianic idiot charged with polygamy and possible sexual abuse of young girls near Abilene, Texas—says the homosekshulls and the STD' are the major cause of global warming.

No volcanoes emit Sulfur Dioxide which lower down temperatures. If you had known about the little ice age which occurred after the Tambora eruption in the 1800s.

"It makes me sick how many people have NOT educated with how the atmosphere works."

It makes me sick that some people are not educated enough to put together a correct sentence.

Did I say that volcanos do not emit Sulfur Dioxide? No. I have completed middle school. I am aware of how the atmosphere works. Perhaps you find Al Gore and teach him some of this knowledge you apparantly posess.

In the (vague and not detailed) words of the late and great George Carlin, the planet earth will straighten itself out. It has done so for billions of years. It will fix itself with or without us humans getting in the way, whether that means a complete devastation of the human race or not. We are ruining this earth, no doubt about it, but it is a bit high of us (as mere humans) to think we will be able to reverse it. We are a flawed species, in terms of preserving beauty.
