Jailed dog abuser Michael Vick has filed for bankruptcy protection, according to new reports.
Chapter 11 documents filed in federal court in Virginia on Monday say Vick is between $10-50 million in debt.
Those legal bills are expensive!
The former football player also cites assets in the same range.
The court documents list seven creditors, including the Falcons, Vick's old employers. The debt to the Falcons is for $3.75 million, listed as a pro rated signing bonus, but the documents state the claim is disputed.
Vick is currently serving a 23-month prison sentence in Leavenworth, Kansas, for his guilty plea in federal court to felony dogfighting charges.
His release date is July, 2009.
"He is in the process of paying his debt back to society for the federal prosecution," said Vick's attorney. "This will give him the opportunity when he gets out to start his life fresh."
Too bad those dogs don't have the same opportunity - to start their lives fresh!

LK, people said that the dogs found homes was in response to Perez's comment of them not being able to start their lives fresh. It's nice that Perez put this up, but he's ill informed about how well off the dogs are. They were horribly abused but had such stable tempermants that only one had to be put down for being human aggressive. Out of 49 dogs, it shows that the american pit bull terrier is truly a wonderful dog, despite being tortured and beaten and whatever else they had to endure.

Actually, Vick's dogs have gotten a fresh start. All but two have been rehabilitated and are living with owners trained to help dogs from abusive situations. Unfortunately, the remaining two dogs had to be destroyed as they were beyond help both physically and mentally.

I am so not the dog lover and while I could care less about the animals, I don't believe in animal cruelty and I know they should not have been treated that way…. but perhaps, I look at it differently because in our society, it is ok to use dogs to maul PEOPLE into submission (e.g. police) and some treat dogs like little gods (they actually had laws to protect animals BEFORE they had laws to protect children and when they did finally initiate some for the kids, they used the ones they had for the beasts!)…. Most of those dogs have been saved, but it amazes me that so many don't read their facts and so many believe EVERY SINGLE WORD they hear or see written in the media. actually the dogs do get to start out fresh. I live in ATL and they ran a huge story about the dogs and how they are now visiting cancer patients in hospitals and that they only had to put one dog down!!
