If you were hoping to try some authentic Chinese dog cuisine while in Beijing for the Olympics, you're out of luck if you eat at the officially designated Olympic restaurants.
The Chinese government has asked the sanctioned restaurants to strike dog off their menus.
Good call! That would totally freak out the Westerners!
According to the report, dog is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

I don't know. I have never been there supposedly O_o.
its a custom of asian countries. now i love puppies and dogs as much as the next person, but i am not one to say that this custom is wrong. I may think it is wrong, and as an asian, I would personally never eat dog, but once again its not my place to say that they shouldn't have such a custom or tradition.

There's lots of dog eating going on in those countries, maybe not in the big cities so much but in the rural and even poorer areas, you can bet there's not too many stray ones running around. They're long gone into the simmering stew pot for dinner. Food is food when you're looking at the hungry faces of your children.

Eating a dog is WAY different than a cow or chicken! A dog is a domestic animal, meant for companionship. There are no wild dogs. Cows and chickens are for raising for food. They are not domestic animals

I've eaten dog when I was in the Philippines. Not to sound like a cliche but it tastes like chicken. If an animal isn't treated as a pet and it's healthy, why not eat it? (BTW, I have a dog that's like my child so I'm not being a hypocrite!)

There was a Chinese restaurant in north Toronto called O Mei….they had a lot of jewish patrons. There was a rumour that they were serving cat…so the joke is that it became known as "Oh Meow". The restaurant because of their plethora of jewish customers ran a full page ad in The Jewish Times that stated clearly that they did not serve cat (tastes like chicken). Funny!!

u know i finally have had it with all of the cruelty against our animals. eating a cow or a chickem is not the same as eating a DOG. im a vegeterian myself but i have to say that God, yes i said Our Father Christ the Lord has blessed certain animals. now when u get into game animals and our pets, it becomes cruel and inhumane. its not a necessity for survival to eat dogs, deers, bulls, frogs, snails, etc. really the list can go on…. real its cruel what we put our animals through. they have feelings too and they can sense danger, fear, agony, happiness and many other feelings. food for thought….. try more veggies and ull c the difference it makes in your life. its not only good for your health but also for ur soul. it gives one a better outlook on life. try it and ull see for yourself.

On the topic of beef, in india cows are sacred and not eaten. That being said, it is all a matter of culture. I, too have travelled extensively in China. They do keep dogs as pets, however in large cities, like Beijing, there are regulations on the size of the animal. Most residents of Beijing, where the Olympics will take palce, do not eat dog. They consider it "below" them. Southern China is where it is easy to find dog, cat, horse or even donkey on the menu. In Beijing, they eat McDonald's and KFC- they love KFC- but not white meat, they prefer dark!

Big difference between dog and cows…..dogs eat meat - much more dangerous for consumption than animals that don't eat meat such as cows, sheep, chicken, most pigs, etc etc. Eating animals such as dogs and bear that eat meat is more dangerous. Having said that I'm a vegetarian.

i personally wouldn't eat dog, but in mere principle it isn't any different than eating any other mammal. we make it so, just because we feel a kinship toward them, but there isn't really a difference between eating dog, rabbit, cow, turkey, chicken, etc (except for flavor, of course).

personally, i think its disgusting… if these restaurants are being run by the olympics then i suppose it's alright for them to request no dog on menu… but, isn't that just a little bit, um, obnoxious. i mean, if that is the cultural preference in that part of the world, and they are asked to change for the sake of visitors to their country, that is just obnoxious. that'd be like us having to shut down the McD's all over, because there may be people who worship cows, or, are afraid of bright red haired clowns, who were coming for a brief visit or to see a tourist attraction…sheesh… don't want to eat it? don't eat it.
I would never eat an animal that is commonly kept as a pet. Maybe I'd have to be stranded somewhere with nothing to eat with my dog or cat and I still think I'd rather die than eat my own pet. They must not see cats or dogs in China as pets that you take care of and instead of serve as food but since I only heard that they casually ate dog like a few years ago, I can't get over that. When it's something so removed from your own culture it just seems too strange and disgusting. In North America most of Europe and Australia, the food is very "safe". There's not very strange stuff to eat because in other countries, people eat very strange stuff on a daily basis. WATCH BIZARRE FOODS WITH ANDREW ZIMMERN and you will realize just how normal the food we eat on a daily basis is. Anyway, I don't like the idea of eating strange meats or especially any organs (save for the occasional menudo), I can barely deal with chicken, pork and cow meats! Once I find every meat in soy form, I will go vegetarian or vegan!

I was in northern Vietnam a couple months ago and saw a chicken-wire cage stuffed with puppies on the back of a scooter. They were off to market. Pretty gross.
Dogs are fine, and so are horses, lizards, snakes, cats, and canaries. Why do people make such a big deal? People should be fed to cows to, its meat, its edible…

my cousin living in Rosarito, Mexico told me a couple of years ago that at a Chinese buffet restaurant they found a garbage dump behind the restaurant full of cat parts. It was believed that they were using cat instead of chicken but the owners said that they used them to cook for a private party of their own because it is normal for them to eat cat.A more disturbing story she and her sister also told me was that there was a rumor or whatever that in another state to the south where our families are from that a particular restaurant used human meat. Those people who disappear without a trace? Their organs are sold and the meat is then sold to restaurants. Also, Her employer at a dental office told her that a cook left a restaurant after learning of the human meat thing because if the owners found out that he knew, they would something to him. He either suspected or had heard that they were fattening up a worker there, but I don't want to imagine why! Anyway, I apparently they don't eat Chinese food now. Who knows if the 2nd story is true, but last year, my sister received several pictures of large rats being used as "chicken" in a few chinese restaurants. Don't get me wrong, I know the Chinese aren't the only ones deceiving their customers but I've never heard any other restaurants who do this and anyway, and we are talking about Chinese food!
