If you were hoping to try some authentic Chinese dog cuisine while in Beijing for the Olympics, you're out of luck if you eat at the officially designated Olympic restaurants.
The Chinese government has asked the sanctioned restaurants to strike dog off their menus.
Good call! That would totally freak out the Westerners!
According to the report, dog is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.
What do U think? Should peeps be eating dogs???

I think it is different eating fido compared to eating a cow or chicken. For one, fido can be trained to be a life-saving animal, house-broken, knows commands and behaves. You can't domesticate a chicken any more than you can domesticate a cow. I don't think it's right to kill animals for the senseless slaughter of it, but my hamburgers taste good, and so does chicken soup.

And the aforementioned Indians with their cows? There are thousands of countries with customs that are different from what we're accustomed to. im half korean, and half white…every culture has different foods…and honestly as much as i dont agree with eating a cute dog…many other cultures eat other wierd things..mostly pets to americans would become a delicasy to other countries…and i dont think anyone should say anything badly towards that…even if it is gross…

I was an Animal Science major and worked with calves and the way they acted reminded me of my dog. They ran around, wagged their tails, and would play hide and seek with you in their little shelter.
Dogs and people hunt together for food - naturally. We are genetically predisposed to hunt WITH dogs, not for them. They are our natural companions and protectors. Eating a dog is basically like eating a human or someone in your family. It's atrocious, cannabalistic, and biologically immoral. Humans and dogs are bonded together through tens of thousands of years of intertwined history.

I've eaten dog. It's like very tender beef. (I live in Korea.)
However, the difference between eating dogs as opposed to other meat is that in order to get the dog meat the most tender and delicious, you have to get the adrenaline into the muscle. That means they beat the dogs for a while right before they kill them.
And after knowing that, I'll never eat dog again.

It's no different. The only thing that makes it different is that in our society, we assign human qualities to dogs and sometimes treat them better than if they were children. It's not accepted in our society, therefore, we assume that it must be wrong. Different cultures, different values.
I once saw this reality show about people from a tribe somewhere in the Brazilian jungle visiting the "civilized" west of Europe. They were shocked and appalled when they visited a zoo. They thought it was absolutely barbaric to keep animals in cages for the sheer purpose of entertainment. Hunt them for food and clothes, or let them run free.
Maybe we are the barbarians, maybe the whole world is barbaric! Who knows??

I think it is ridiculous that the government wants the restaurants to take off the menu. It takes away one of the main essences of the Olympics, experiencing other cultures. If people don't want to experience the Chinese dishes that have dog meat in them then they do not have too. I do think that the menus should be clear though in what entrees contain dog.

They don't eat domesticated dogs. My mom is from korea and she's explained this to me many times. Theres a type of wild dog that some asian countries eat. They're not eating a poodle, or pomeranian, or pit bull, or anything like that. It's a WILD dog, NOT a domesticated one! It like an american hunting a deer or turkey and eating it…to them, it's no different.

Eating a dog in China is equivalent to eating a cow or chicken in America. They are rasied for slaughter, not raised as a pet. Just because one is not used to the idea of eating something like a dog.. doesn't mean that it is 'wrong'. Different cultures have different morals.

All creatures placed on earth serve a specific purpose. DOMESTIC animals such as dogs AND cats are not meant for food but companions … but thats just to say that, where I am from, this is how things are perceived. In places such as China, things are very different therefore their perception of earth and its creatures is very different as well.
On street afer street in city after city one can find dogs sitting in crates outside of dogmeat restaurants waiting until some selects them. The killing is generally done on the street, so the waiting dogs come to understand their fate. The following is a description of the slaughter of a dog in Beijing taken from the China Boycott Union website:
"I live in Beijing China, and have seen so many
disturbing and disgusting exaples of animal cruelty,
once witnessing the slaughter of a dog, in front of a
dog meat restaurant, on one of the busiest streets in
town, on the sidewalk, with pedestrians passing. The
dog had been hung up, while alive i might add, by a
hook through it's chin. Legs tied together. In one
swift motion a man stabbed the dog in the neck and
proceeded to slice the dog open all the way down. An
ocean of blood is the only way I could describe it. I
had to turn away, and tried to leave as fast as i
could, but the sounds the dog was making, the
screaming, not a wail or a whimper, but screams,
almost human, definately unnatural, were audible down
the street, even as i tried to escape the sight, i was
haunted by the sound. It was truly one of the most
inhumane things I've ever seen, and one of the most

My brother and sister in law lived in Beijng for 4 years, and saved a dog from the stew pot. Yellow dogs are particularly valued as food there, and the dog they have is a Golden Retriever. They also hang up the dogs by the neck and beat the tar out of them while the dogs are still alive to make the meat taste better. Nice image, huh? Actually, I have no problem with them eating dog meat, it's traditional yadda, yadda, yadda. What I have a problem with is the way the dogs and cats are treated and butchered.

However, people should realize that food dogs are different from pet dogs. It's a similar distinction for people in Asia as, say, the parakeet-chicken distinction is for Westerners.

The difference is that dogs were bred and domesticated mainly for the purpose of being our friends. They are genetically predisposed to be our friends. We made them what they are today for that reason. And the reason we were able to do this is that there is something in the nature of a canine that makes them compatible with us. They are social animals. Cows can be very loving as well, but that is the exception to the norm. Honestly it's sad to eat any animal, but there are differences. Would it be okay to eat an Orangutan? And while we're at it, why not eat human? Animal is animal right? Or are there differences? I am so sick of people acting as though we deserve more rights than other animals. If we're gonna make the argument that ALL ANIMALS should be eaten with abandon than I think we should fall into that category.
We are the only animals that kill for pleasure. We are the only animals who KNOW BETTER and still abuse and kill. So in my estimation, rather than being ABOVE other animals and therefore exempt from being consumed, we are below other animals and therefore deserve to be consumed.
All I'm saying is that more than many animals, dogs deserve to be treated compassionately. They give us all their trust and love more readily and more fully in general than any other animal.

I saw a series of photos where a family had an adorable little dog. Big, warm eyes, happy face. It was playing with the children and the photos showed it nuzzling them lovingly. Next frame: a male in the family approaching with a rope. then: the dog hanging, writhing. The little fluffy dog who had been happily playing moments before was writhing in agony because, (it was explained), hanging the animal forces it to defecate, so then there isn't feces and urine in the corpse when preparing it for dinner.

No it is not okay to eat dog or cat, both animals that are emotional and respond/relate in loving, trusting ways . Having said that, I will add that cows, chickens, pigs (pigs are as intellugent as a 3-year old human) all have the same or similar capacity for emotional give and take.

Humans are omnivorous animals but have the cognitive capacity to understand that ramifications of eating another animal. We have lots more options for getting food that our forbearers did and eating other animals is no longer required for survival.

Cutting our animal flesh 100% (going cold turkey hehe), is not necessary. One can phase it out gradually. It may taste good, but you have to numb a part of your awraeness and, so, your capacity to enjoy life, to eat animals. For some, that's the trade off they prefer.

The reason why we don't eat dogs is because we are on the same level on the food chain. Humans and dogs are carnivores. Livestock like chickens, cows, sheep, goats and even camels are herbivores and it's safer to eat them because they carry less disease. Some of these arguments are completely asinine. "We can't eat dogs b/c they're domesticated and not wild. All we can eat are wild animals" REALLY? So by that logic, we can eat lions and bears too then?
