If you were hoping to try some authentic Chinese dog cuisine while in Beijing for the Olympics, you're out of luck if you eat at the officially designated Olympic restaurants.
The Chinese government has asked the sanctioned restaurants to strike dog off their menus.
Good call! That would totally freak out the Westerners!
According to the report, dog is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

dog really isn't eaten in Beijing you would have to look for it to find it. It is more popular in the countryside and places that can't afford the more expensive meats. I don't think eating dog would be a problem. I live in China and the only time I have ever encountered dog meat has been in the rural provinces.

Any animal feels pain when it is murdered. We can get plenty of protein and enjoy superior health eating vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.

All you people who are saying "it's the same as westerners eating cows!" are morons and need to actually research what you are saying before you say it, this will help you not look so idiotic. It's not the fact that the Chinese eat dogs it is all about how they kill them to do so, as a couple people have mentioned they torture the animals first to tenderise or to increase adrenline so they are more "tasty", this is NOT looked down upon in China. If in a Western country a company is found to be torturing cows, chickens etc they are prosecuted for cruelty to animals, there is no such law in China and THAT is what the problem is.
While the dishes smell horrid (unbelievably awful beyond your wildest imagination), they have a great taste (soup and bbq'd). Minus the emotions, we are animals and we eat living things to survive. I wish more effort was put forth to improve the treatment of these animals which we eat…to me that seems most important. Even if beating them adds taste, it's not worth it! My 20won.

As a dog lover my first response is too say HELL NO people shouldn't eat dogs.
As a vegetarian (12 years now) I say people should not eat anything with a heartbeat.

I don't mind the idea (I will never eat dog meat though) and I can see why Chinese people see it as regular meat BUT what I find revolting and gross, and inhuman and sick is the fact that the animal has to suffer to be more tasty (that was what an interviewee in a documentary I watched years ago).

First off, we can not judge other cultures just because they are different than our own. Just because what we think is wrong, does not mean that it is wrong in other cultures. I am disgusted of how some people in the US are so ignorant towards other countries and their cultures. People say that eating dog meat is disgusted, but we eat cows, pigs, etc.
Though it is uncommon that we have cows or pigs as pets, they are still the same. I've read on some posts that "cows, pigs, chickens don't know that they're dead" This is completely untrue. Did anyone know that cows actually know when they are about to be slaughtered and they even cry. Does anyone know how they butcher cows or pigs? They slit their throats and hang them.
I also have taken notice to some of the racist and cruel remarks about the Chinese culture and how they are a 3rd world country. Just think if China stopped exporting to the US. How unfortunate would we be?
I've been to China a couple of times in my life and I have not once seen dog meat in the main cities. Granted some towns are more poor than others. The poor towns are the ones that have dog meat on a menu, and that is because they can not afford to raise cows or pigs.
I hope you all gain a little bit of insight on this topic and maybe next time, the comments on other cultures won't make westerners look like idiots.

Do you think chinese people have dogs as pets first and then slaughter their beloved fido when they are hungry? Dogs are livestock too if they are raised as livestock, and that is what they are over there. Just like any other animal "raised" to be eaten. It doesn't make one animal ok to eat and another not ok just because you say so. Pigs are sold as pets too and they can create a strong bond with people, as much as dogs. Personally i love piglets, but I can't say shit about what other people eat because i eat beef and chicken too! So stop being ignorant and hypocritical - If you aint vegan, you have nothing to back up your opposition on this matter.

The Chinese government also had dogs clubbed briutally to death when there was a rabies scare, while their distraught owners watched. Begging them to stop teh slaughter of even healthy pets did nothing.

coming from a once vegetarian who lives in china, meat is meat. these dogs aren't raised as pets, they are raised the way one may raise a cow or chicken for me, but often in better conditions with higher standards to their quality of life.

Eating a dog is not that different from eating any other kind of meat. China has a lot of people to feed and in their culture it is o.k. to eat not only a dog, but also some animal parts that we throw away here. And contrary to us North Americans, Chinese people eat healthy and obesity is not a health crisis in their country. Maybe we have something to learn from them.

I have been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, but a dog is the only animal I would eat, as that seems to me to be the best use to put these pointless creatures to. They stink, they shit on our streets, in our play parks and outside schools. They rae a hygiene risk and it is disgusting to have such a thing in your home -they are far better placed dead on a plate. I have heard that the meat doesn't taste so great, but with a little garlic and some roasted shallots, most things come out OK. And before you dog-shaggers start whining on about how these problems "are the owners' fault!" don't worry, I'm very fair -I'd roast and eat those fuckers too.

During the rabies scare, The Chinese government did what they had to do. If the animals did have rabies, the government could not let them run around infecting other animals or humans. THAT would be cruel.
Red, remember that outbreak of mad cow disease? Butchers had to slaughter them just so the animals and humans would not contract this sickness. This is the same thing the Chinese government had to do with the rabies scare. Since you bring up the topic of animal cruelty, people kill whales just for blubber, KFC sure as hell does not take care of the chickens, people kill animals for fur, leather and other things, people even kill other people. If the animal is killed humanely and not beaten or tortured (like they do in some cases with dogs) en I say eat it. I love bunnies and deer and I know a lot of people eat that stuff and it doesn't bother me. I don't understand why some think its a big deal to eat a dog. I don't like how the dogs are beaten to death, some chinese say that puts more adrelaline into the muscles and makes it taste better, I think that wrong. But for eating it, I say bon appetite!
first of all, it actually tastes pretty good and second, you wouldn't even notice if you ate it. It's meat and it's not like they eat poodles and labs, they have a breed that they eat … so ya, it's just like eating chicken or beef.

It's absolutely comical to me that people are leaving comments about how "barbaric" it is to eat dogs, yet we still call things like cows, chickens, fish, pigs, etc - "dinner." Can i just say not all asians eat dog?? Too many people overgeneralizing here, which is typical i spose in relation to the iq of readers on this blog. It's well known that the Chinese will eat just about anything - come on, bird nest soup?? Shark fin soup? The type of Chinese food we eat here in the US is tame to compared to what they really eat over there.
My husband was in the Navy and stationed in Japan and he went to China on a couple occassions. I don't mean to sound racist, but he says the Chinese are about the dirtiest, nastiest people on earth. They spit and pick their noses in public, don't bathe on a regular basis and don't put diapers on their babies and toddlers so the kids just shit and piss in the streets. And the dog meat packages in the Chinese stores have pictures of the actual breed of dog you're eating - so if there's a poodle on the can, you're eating poodle meat, etc. YUMMMM - not!
Re: maria – I know - eewwwwww! And they aren't big on teeth brushing and they smoke like chimneys. No wonder the damn place is so polluted. I heard for the past year or so the Chinese government has been trying to teach basic hygeine to service people (hotel workers, cab drivers, etc) so foreigners coming there for the Olympics aren't grossed out by the nasty habits of the Chinese.
