If you were hoping to try some authentic Chinese dog cuisine while in Beijing for the Olympics, you're out of luck if you eat at the officially designated Olympic restaurants.

The Chinese government has asked the sanctioned restaurants to strike dog off their menus.

Good call! That would totally freak out the Westerners!

According to the report, dog is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

What do U think? Should peeps be eating dogs???

Is eating a dog any different than eating a cow or a chicken???

The only difference is that they beat the dogs before they kill them to make the meat more tasty…….ewwwwww!!!!

When you start eating dogs and cats, cannibalism is not too far behind, they still eat people in Papua New Guinea, I bet it tastes like chicken, and it's part of their culture and long standing tradition. F all you morons who think that eating dog is okay, cannibalism is still practiced in places like surprise— China. Obviously SARS was not punishment enough for the Chinese, there is probably a new plague mutating from eatining inedible species right this minute. After all Ebola evolved from cannibalism.
Avian flu is spreading like wildfire.
That would be Karma biting them in the ass. A lot of these dogs are beaten, left to strangle on a rope, or thrown into high pressure cooker while still alive, Yummy. I doubt cows and pigs are treated the same way.

Dogs, Cats or People should not be eaten. And if these undeveloped countries refuse to learn, mother nature will show them the way.

Re: j – perez was just asking for his readers' opinions. Sorry to say, but he is posing an interesting question and receiving a good variety of responses. What research do you think should have been done before he asked this question?
i would not eat dog, but i do eat cows and pigs and chickens and fish. maybe if i had been brought up in a culture where my family ate dog, i would eat it too… it's hard to say.

This is just wrong, eating dogs?

    now c'mon people!?

Is our world this mad, dogs are pets, and not been in this world to be eaten, but to be loved, just like humans, and that counts for all species.

its not only dogs they eat down there, its freaking cats also, do they have no shame?

Seeing a poor little dog or cat being slaughtered, and ate for dinner??

    stupid, just stupid.

You're right, I should have clarified. I said that humans aren't CARNIVOROUS, I didn't say that many humans don't have an omnivorous diet. When we were cavemen, yes, we killed animals with our hands and teeth and ate it raw. However, our bodies have evolved. Our physiology has changes. Our incisors became dull, our "claws" became weak and our intestines grew longer making meat more difficult to digest and process.

in china, a certain breed of dog is 'farmed' like horses, cows, pigs etc. are here. the dogs that are eaten are from 'dog farms' that breed the dogs for the specific purpose of being eaten–much like the beef, poultry, and hog farms in western countries–

  8. north says – reply to this

    408

Dogs were bred over hundreds of years to be our companions and to perform functions that benefit us such as protection, hunting, etc. Cows and chickens are bred specifically to be eaten.

I think it is thoughtless to be so culturally ignorant. Sure many Westerners do find the idea of eating dogs repulisive, but why should China change years of tradition just to conform to Western ideals? It's called culture, and it's a diverse subject. This just shows how far Americanization and globalisation is going. It's unfair to pick on something you obviously do not understand.

For instance, the Chinese, well most Asians infact, are repulsed by turkeys. They hate the smell and think they are disgusting. However they aren't demanding a recall of turkeys from Western supemarkets just for their satisfaction.

Also, the Beijing olympics are open to so many countries apart from the U.S. such as Vietnam, Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan; where eating dog meat is a tradition. Where 'Westerners' may be repulsed, these named nationals may be comforted by the familiarity of dog meat.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.

It's totally disgusting the way they even treat animals over there. Dogs & cats stuck in tiny cages at markets & not killed humanely, then they skin them & sell their fur. They are the most disgusting race I hate all people from that area. All Asians I have no time at all for. I work in Hospitality & when they come to check into the Hotel I work at it takes all my might not to tell 'em to fuck off. If I owned this Hotel they wouldn't be allowed in here. They carry on at us for being racist well I am I'll admit it, but I live in Australia & in Brisbane we aren't allowed in their shops. They are just as bad. I HATE all of THEM……………………

    413

I agree with the westerner comment. it's not much different than us eating cows. plus. chinese people don't eat all types of dogs (that's bad because it causes certain complications and diseases). they breed certain types of dogs for eating (this is extremely popular in cold places such as northern china and korea)

    Re: Kimmy
wow such a racist comment. one person's choice doesn't represent a whole freaking race. when i was in australia, people ran over kangaroos that hopped onto the road. i don't go on saying that i hate all aussies and that they need to build fences around roads so that there's no more kangaroo roadkill.

Re: starv – My word I'm racist. I hate them all. Can't stand the look of the ugly chinks. I hate the way people run over animals here & how they also eat what is meant to represent Australia. I have raised many orphaned roos, wallaby, wombats & even a Tasmanian Devil because I check roadkill. I hate the killing of any animal whether it be for sport, food or just for the fun of it. Go take a good look at some history of those chinks & see what they have actually been up to. If eating dog isn't so bad why they taking it off the menu when westerners are there. Cause they know it's sick & disgusting just like them. By the way I am Vegan

people should think about the fact that most of china is impoverished and the majority of their people do not have any access to food. come on perez, you're usually up to date on social issues.

  18. KD says – reply to this

    418

All animals were bred for specific purposes and have their place in the food chain. Dogs (with the exception of wild dogs) were bred for companionship. We, as animals, are at the top of the food chain- eating meat is the natural order of things, the way it's been since the dawn of man. Really, when one criticizes humans for eating meat, shouldn't we be criticizing all carnivores? Including wolves, lions, etc? Granted the manner in which humans have evolved to killing our prey is often inhumane, though how much less "humane" is it than a wolf ripping out of the throat of a baby moose? I think humans sometimes forget that we are animals and a part of the food chain, always have been, and historically have not been omnivores.

  19. Kimmy says – reply to this

    419

Why don't all you meat eaters out there get on the PETA website & see exactly how these pathetic excuses for men actually kill these animals. Ok so you got to eat animals, well we have the resources to do it humanely but most of them don't. They are cruel disgusting human beings. They treat animals like they do because they cannot defend themselves. These men must be so weak & pathetic that they can just be so tough with a helpless animal. It is proven that you are much healthier if you don't eat meat but as usual it comes down to the almighty dollar. I would rather be poor than be like those pathetic losers who kill & breed animals for humans to eat.

    429

disgusting. no i dont eat chickens and cows or anything else that has babies and lived a life, precisely BECAUSE i could never eat a dog or a cat. a living sentient animal is the same and feels the same emotions and pain and happiness, regardless if it's a person or a sheep or a horse or a cow or a rooster or a rat. but kudos to the Chinese for not being hypocrites like Americans and Brits. the West is so far removed from the real food chain that they can be upset by eating man's best friend, and then go and eat some Babe chops. bon appetit!

  30. carme says – reply to this

    430

I think alot of people who aren't vegetarians would still have a problem with eating dogs, Only because dogs are domesticated as that one person said. They're used to having dogs in their homes, As pets, And the thought of them being eaten grosses us out. I do have a problem though with people saying dogs can love, where as cows and chickens cant, ALL animals are capable of emotions. I dont mind killing animals for food, I mean it is a way of living for lots of people but i just dont agree with the methods used to kill the animals. Its too inhumane, Even for an animal.

and also that j person down there u say that it is different because cows and chickens are raised to be eaten, whereas dogs aren't, and that perez should research before he opens his mouth. Now why dont you take your own advice, because im sure in some countries dog are raised TO BE eaten.

    431

Wow. Some people are incredibly racist and rude. Different culture, different foods, clothing, way of life. I don't plan on eating dog anytime soon, but leave them alone. YOU people are the disgusting ones, saying rude things like "those motherf***ers are disgusting and they eat everything. Do you even know their history? Do you know ANYTHING about them or are you just another close-minded freak who hates Asians because it's "funny" and "cool"? Get over yourself. I'm Asian and I hate it when people say things like that, because, really, us Asians put up with a lot of shit-talk that goes on about us, but this just crosses the line. How about this? "Ewww… you are so nasty. You eat veal!!! That's BABY COW! Ewww! You stupid idiot. Your culture is so disgusting. Sick."
