Is This The Answer???

George W. Bush announced Monday that he will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling in the U.S.

But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts to remove their ban as well.

Thoughts????

Its long past time for the liberals in congress to get their heads out of their asses. The Mantra that it will take 10 years to get any benefit out of it is stupid. Its going to take time for anything to be done, most likely 8-10 years.

Thanks Pres. Bush, for at least TRYING to help.

You think this oil will be flowing into the US market?????

    Guess again children!

Alaska's oil goes to China and India. Where do you think our other resources end up?

So naive! We are talking Bush here. He isn't about bringing our prices down or relieving the supply to US citizens - he's making his friends richer by using our stupidity.

    Wake up!

Sounds like a great start. If we were able to start drilling today we could utilize that fuel in a year. In the meantime we could also look into alternative uses for fuel. Why not do both?

If being used the way most white people use it to define black people "WOWO"

Maybe if more people called ALL ignorant people "N!GGERS" America would stop using the word for good.

…it's the big PAY BACK to his oil company buddy lobbyists and the ones who helped get him into the White Housr to begin with! His sorry as would never have made it in to the 50%+ "popular" vote without them. So, let's recap: The Religious Right and the Oil companies got this moron in as President ..and this is what it came to. Sad. I live in Texas and everyone who has been here a while knows all about this clown. He was (is) a wayward fuck-up who wanted to show Daddy he could do something since he ruined everything he got his drunken hands on previously. The Bush family never was one that played by the rules and oddly enough Poppa Bush is the only one of the lot that has any sense and was something of a statesman. He never embarrassed us like Jr. has. Ma Bush is mostly to blame. She is a dragon. No soul whatsoever.
Glad to get rid of the lot of them!….Enjoy your retirementr in Dallas, Bushie. That's the only place that will still "love" you, sorry to say. I live in Hosuton and we are glad he's going to live out his later years in a city that deserves him. OBAMA!OBAMA! Change! NOW! Adios, you numbnuts!

think about what those people are fighting for. us. they are fighting for our country and you and me. and you are being ungrateful. talking about them as though the only thing they are good for is to haunt someone. and i dont want to hear that you respect the troops, because with comments like that you don't.

It's one step in the many steps it will take to help get us out of this mess. All this back-and-forth about what's the best thing to do isn't accomplishing anything. What do we need to do to solve our dependence on foreign oil? Everything! Alternate fuel sources, off-shore drilling, nuclear power plants and on and on and on… Nothing's going to fix it overnight, but doing nothing will fix nothing.

Congress better get behind him 100% (as if that's even remotely possible) — the Chinese are drilling off the coast of Florida for oil as the Democrats sit on their hands and pontificate about developing alternatives for gasoline — what a pathetic bunch. In case they haven't noticed, the cars we're driving NOW only run on gasoline — and we can't all afford to buy new hybrids at the present moment.

Dumbasses!!!!!! Meanwhile people this winter are in deep shit because you asshats keep refusing to do anything about he oil crisis. Here in NE so many elderly people are in DEEP SHIT because they can't pay for oil… so it is okay for them to FREEZE to death as long as your precious seal babies live?? Why people think liberals care about their fellow human beings is beyond me. DO SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE!!!!! SEE THE TRUTH instead of what liberal powermongers want you to believe!

I wish this idea were helpful but it's simply not. It's not a short term OR a long term answer. We need to be focusing on reducing our dependence on oil period. We need to focus on creating new energy sources. America should be leading the world on a renewable energy movement.

the best thing that americans can do is insist that the bush administation is ousted. we should never agree to either one of the two "popular" candidates either as they are two pockets of the same suit and the suit is very ugly. pandering liars who will do anything and say anything to get elected. we need to take the country back from the corrupt government and realize that we can NOT rely on the mainstream media for the truth as they are working for the very people who are trying to keep the truth of what we need to know about this country and our future from us.

  34. wowww says – reply to this

    134

WOWWWWW some of you are so dumb. Here are the FACTS (which not many of you seem to know, yet enjoy having a fervent opinion about, scary). IF we drill, we are talking about very small oil reserves that will take YEARS (more than the 10 you all are talking about). 2012 before ppl get permits to drill, 2018 before they are drilling, and longer before we see even that trickly of oil. Drilling would produce about 200,000 barrels of oil/day. Do you know how much oil the US is predicted to need DAILY at that time? 21 MILLION BARRELS!!!!! Drilling WILL NOT help. Idiots. I feel bad for the poor people suffering at the pump, but as people have said before, Bush, and many others in Congress haven't done what is best for the country or the world or our future, because there was too much profit in it for them to keep the oil companies happy. Even if you hate the environment and don't care, at least know the facts on how LAME a solution drilling is to our energy crisis, and realize it will cost too much and not save you any money, and hate it on that principal.

It is funny. Greedy american fools give their kids cars, so now every person over 16 is driving and using gasoline. Kids take cars to college. COME ON!!! NO wonder they are all fat, fat little girls with muffin-top cause mommy and daddy sent them to college with a car. Really, colleges should not permit cars on campus. These kids should stay on campus or in the college town. It is amazing to go to PENN STATE and see the suburban sprawl. The college kids are too spoiled and leave campus to spend their parents money, and go shopping and eat at applebees. Then they cry about student loans, and their parents cry about gas prices. IN a country where 20 year old kids have SUVs and Flat Panel tvs gas shouldn't be a problem. Greedy, spoiled, selfish, whiners. I mean, I see teenagers getting manicures and pedicures! People spend thousands of dollars on PETS! Yet, god forbid they have to pay a co-pay for their medication! People spend more out of pocket on their animals than their damn kids medical bills! It is crazy!

Yeah… but who are we going to out source the refining of all this extra oil too? We refine at capacity now. There go the Republicans playing the stupid card again. I hope to god by the time we actually get the oil in 10+ years that we are no longer dependent on oil as a method of energy production. There are tons of other viable options that need to be persued. Oil is a non-renewable resource… so if we are thinking in the long term than we should start thinking about it running out too… your friendly neighborhood economist

  39. Taylo says – reply to this

    139

    1. Yes, we do need to build more refineries, however, the government makes this very difficult. There are many expansions undergoing construction and in the process to build currently.
    2. Bush does not determine the prices of oil. Market Traders and Supply and Demand (Economics 101 should have taught you that).
    3. Alternative fuels: yes we need them. When will it happen? When oil companies are ready. They are the ones with the massive bank accounts with funding for this.
    4. Drilling offshore will allow us to
    a. create more jobs in the US
    b. stop importing 70% of our oil
    c. allow us to get the oil from the gulf… which is much easier than the canadian sand minds which is where O&G companies are looking at getting their sources next. Because it is so difficult to get gas from these reservoirs, price goes up.
    5. Actually, you are wrong COMMO… there are not more barrels of oil being produced everyday. Instead of making gasoline with their crude oil (which is probably what you meant to say), oil companies are making asphalt and other biproducts of crude because it makes them more money. The prices of oil are not hitting the gas stations as fast as they actually are increasing.
    6. If you think we should have more regulation, move to Europe.
    7. If we used all the corn in Nebraska that would still not make up for 10% of our energy usage.

The latest poll shows Congress has
a nine percent approval rating, the lowest
    in history for a Congress.
(Bush's approval rating is twenty six percent.)
    .
The richest woman in Congress, Nancy Pelosi
and her Democratic cohorts will not approve
off shore drilling or even allow it to come to
    a vote.
Nancy wants gas prices to remain sky high
because she and the Democrats think it will
help their party in the elections because
many people think the President sets gas prices.
    .
Your food and gas prices are madly high and
you can thank the Democratic Congress and Nancy
for not allowing America to drill for oil.

It has to be better than our entire economy depending on imports for unstable regions in the world. If we want affordable energy, where going to have to ugly up our topography a bit. Sucks, but it was self rightous for us to think otherwise for as long as we did.

  44. Rash says – reply to this

    144

When America demands off shore drilling,
    the Democrats responds saying
"It will be ten years before we would
even get any oil from offshore drilling."
    .
Ten years ago, Bill Clinton did not
allow off shore drilling because he said
it would be ten years ago before we
    got any oil from it.
Now the ten years have passed.
    .
The actual figure is more like three years,
    using the latest drilling methods.
    .
Democrats want a poor American public
so we will have to depend on government
    programs and handouts to survive.
This ensures they will never be voted out
of office and have lifetime political jobs.

smart move! Should have done this ten years ago. If it were being portrayed as the solution to our energy problem than i would disagree but we will be dependent on oil for some time. Unless Obama promises we won't need oil in ten years this is a must. Why allow millions of dollars to fall into terrorist hands and into the hands of people who run radical schools which brainwash muslim children.

people, don't buy into the idea that exploration will do the least bit to change the current cost of gasoline. that's a myth. furthermore, blaming the congress is lame and a tactic used for the past two years by the criminal executive branch to distract the voter from the real issues. Bush doesn't give a damn what Congress thinks anyhow. there are current leases already owned by the US atop HUGE reserves. they could have been extracting oil from sites that were drilled decades ago if they wanted to. look into why not. for starters, limiting the amount of oil production makes the cost of gas go up, and who benefits from that? they have twisted this into a partisan affair to win the upcoming election. don't be dumb. do your research. after all, the cost of gas has quadrupled since bush has been in office and the oil companies continue to make record profits (the profit margin keeps growing). why do you think that is?

But seriously, can't we mandate some laws to have everyone start using hydrogen cars, or at least hybrids? Seriously….

You have to think of this in terms of what message this sends to the Middle East.
We have options and we will pusue them.

I agree with some of the previous posts. We need to drill for more oil, and we need to research alternative energy sources. Unfortunately, most alternative fuel sources that could supply energy in the amounts we need are fairly controversial right now, too. What no one seems to realize is that this has been a problem for some time. Most of us remember low gas prices within our lifetime. They've been rising for some time because of demand. We need to offset that demand with more supply. Also, no one who has done a modicum of research into the matter can produce factual evidence of coastal oil platforms hurting the environment, oceanic or otherwise. Stop your fear-mongering, and face facts. We need more oil, and this is what we need to do to get it, and reduce our dependency on other countries to get it for us.

    Re: wowww

Thanks to the intelligent posters for injecting some sanity into this forum. Its absolutely true that this is not even a "quick" fix; it will take forever to drill and refine, it will do nothing to stop rising gas prices now.

Alternative energy IS being researched and implemented in India and China (who also uses offshore drilling), for the xenophobes trying to scapegoat other countries for their own countries obsession with consumption.

Bush and his oil buddies are making a ton of money off his terms, as you saw through his wars. They won't make it cheaper for you unless you start to demand investments in renewable energy instead of fighting more wars. Bush's "victories" in Iraq and Afghanistan have fucked us over for years to come.

Bush is an idiot. Offshore drilling is not the answer to our energy problems. He needs to get his head out of the oil industries ass & find other "non oil" solutions. How about hemp? Oh wait, that's to fucking logical for Bush to consider.

Or perhaps, "maybe we should gouge the hell out of you now since you will be less dependent later."

It's not the Middle East raising prices, it's the insane price speculation in America to make the rich richer.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Our family needs this. Just the threat of us drilling will bring down the price of gas. We need to drill for oil locally, work on building more efficient/smaller cars, and expand public transportation. This is a move in the right direction! For once I agree with what our President is doing……it should have been sooner.

The democratic congress will sit by and do nothing just to screw over the republicans who are trying to help this country. They are a bunch of self serving asses who will hurt the rest of us just to paint republicans as bad when in actuality - they are the reason gas prices are $5 a gallon. In the words of Glenn Beck, "Screw the Caribou, drill Alaska." We have thousands of years of oil in several states and the ability to get 100 million barrels of oil a day if we were to drill in Alaska. But oh no, heaven forbid we relocate the caribou!

It is remarkable how wrong most of these comments are. Drilling doesn't pollute the environment, oil companies get 12 cents of every dollar for themselves, the rest is tax, drilling would create more jobs and bolster the economy, Bush DOES NOT control supply and demand of oil and therefore can in NO WAY affect the price of it, oil companies have explored ALL of the leased land they own, just can't build more refineries or ways to get at the oil, and supplying more oil into the system will ABSOLUTELY lower the prices. Estimates and guesswork mean nothing right now. Concrete fact only, and no one can find any evidence to prove me otherwise wrong. Well, credible evidence……

This is absolutely the answer. The ANWR is uninhabitable, and by drilling on .01% of it, we'd get billions of barrels of oil. That's not an exaggeration.

The answer to lower gas prices is oil. It's a simple as the answer to hunger is food.

But as always, Bush could not go to War without approval of Congress, get your facts right before you say things that aren't presently or historically true. There are a reported 62 million acres currently under lease to the oil companies that are not being drilled. Why do they need more if they are not using what they have?

there isn't a need for offshore drilling ffs. this is a move to appease the idiots that think that's why our oil prices have jumped. it's not! great, now we can just finish off the animals & environment in those places. idiots.
