Finally, a feature film adaptation of the Broadway smash Wicked is in the works.
Yay!
Some names that we could easily see playing either role are: Anne Hathaway, Mandy Moore, Emmy Rossum, Kristen Bell and…..

i have seen the play twice, am probably to plays away from melting my cd, and could acot out the scene for popular by MYSELF! and i gotta say, idina and kristen have to be the leading ladies. if i have to see mandy moore in a movie based on a broadway musical, i think i'd die in shame.
Idina Menzel had better be in it! She is positively amazing and if there's any singing at all, it won't be the same without her!

Are you fucking kidding me? Emmy Rossum as Elphaba?! I just vomited. Seriously, that girl is cute or whatever, but she's a fucking soprano?! Dude, you claim to be such an avid lover of musical theatre, but you don't have a fucking clue. Elphaba MUST be sung by a seriously great BELTER with actual stamina, not a little bird with an ugly mid range. Disgusting.

Ana Gasteyer from SNL also played Elphaba (youtube it) and she's not that bad, actually. But yeah, Kristen and Idina.
None of the actresses you named can really belt out the vocals necessary for these roles.
AHH i'm SO excited. Idina and Cheno, obv.! They are both amazing. I do agree that the Wizard, Madame Morrible, and Nessarose could be played by well known actors, but leave the leading roles to the professionals, please!

omg! i am inlove with wicked… i'm not sure if its going to translate well or better on film. im routing for ann hathaway or reese witherspoon, and idina!
FIRST: They should hire Chris Columbus to do the film. I think he did an exceptional job when he did the movie version of Rent (which also had Idina in it!)
SECOND: They should also do what Chris Columbus did and hire as many of the Original Broadway Cast members as possible. The chemistry among all the actors and actresses involved must be right, special, MAGICAL for it to work off stage and onto film format.

UMMMM OBVI IDINA AND KRISTIIIN — NO ONE ELSE WILL DO IT JUSTICE.
I don't think it would be successfull withouth Idina and kristen, but if they had to replace the leads, I would go with Pink as Elphaba, who would be able to belt out the big songs with a raspy, powerfull voice, and I think Emmy Rossum would be surprising as Glinda. The producers would have to put some sort of new spin on it, either by cutting out some of the numbers, and adding more character development and special effects to be an effective stage-to-screen adaptation.

Umm Idina and Kirstin are perfectly able to play the roles they made. But Mandy Moore as Glinda would be a smart choice, i dident not think so till i thought about it. Britney Spears might even be something to think about… it sounds nuts but… i hope this movie is made, i looooooved this musical!

moore and hathaway and whatnot are great on camera but this is too much of a vocally challenging show. honestly, i dont think they could sing it better than the OBC leading ladies.

OMFG What about Bette as Mad. Morrible?! PERFECT! I know this is craazy but Lindsay as Elphaba or even Glinda. She is a good actress and she can sing, maybe with vocal lessons. I kinda think and hope that if they dont do the origanial cast that they will use unknowns like casting for tracy in hairspray. I just cant see a huge movie star playing any one, and i dont think i could buy it.

I so think that the originals should play the leads. Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. I know that they're kind of old but they have the best voices to sing those great songs. If not them then I could so see Kristin Bell and Emmy Rossum playing the leads.

It should really be kirstin and Idina as it was their baby 1st! and u need STRONG voices for this score ( not dubbed ala phantom of the opera ) but Reece witherspoon would be hot stuff for glinda providing her voice is good enough!

IDINA MENZEL!!!!! she is the original and helped it become popular because of her immense talent. Kristin Chenoweth BETTER be in it or it may suck. Powerful voices are a necessity for this film to be more than average.

Idina and Kristin are middle-aged, i.e. too old to be playing college students. Furthermore, it is most likely they'll be using stars for the two lead roles or unknowns. It is evident that using stage casts in musical movies does not = a blockbuster hit as opposed to using stars.

…with all due respect, I'd love to see anyone in this film who ISN'T one of the people you listed above. Emmy Rossum was far too weak a singer for "Phantom," she doesn't need to ruin another musical-made-movie. Mandy Moore is a joke. Also, Kristen Bell, as much as I love her, is not cut out for a full singing part, and Anne Hathaway isn't especially talented as a singer. Soooo someone actually talented, preferably someone who actually does musical theater, would be best for me.

How about the original cast… Idina and Chenoweth. They act and sing. I'll be upset if they pick people who can't actually belt those high notes.
The only two people who could ever do the two leads justice are the originals– Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth. no one can even begin to compare to them, and this movie won't be the absolute best it can be without them. Idina would do it cuz she did it for Rent, so hopefully Kristen will too. Chenzel has to reunite sooon!
