North Carolina's Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole introduced an amendment to name an HIV/AIDS relief bill after her predecessor, the recently deceased Jesse Helms.
Say what???? Is this bitch hopped up on meds and totally cuhrazeee?????
Helms was a foe of HIV/AIDS prevention, research and treatment. And that's putting it mildly!
Here are some highlights from Helms' notable moments in AIDS relief:
Jesse Helms, the man who in 1987 described AIDS prevention literature as "so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up."
Jesse Helms, the man who in 1988 vigorously opposed the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS research bill, saying, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."
Jesse Helms, the man who in 1995 said (in opposition to refunding the Ryan White Act) that the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

Actually, Perez, if you think about it — it's pretty funny! What better way to piss off Jesse Helm (who now, hopefully, is merrily roasting in hell) than to name an HIV/AIDs bill after him? Here in Upstate New York, there is a small women's college that was named after the husband of the founder — his name was Russell Sage and he did not believe in women getting an education; so when he croaked, his wife started a women's college in his name - with HIS money! (Take that, Russell!) Who knew Elizabeth Dole was so droll?

The first documented case of Aids was diagnosed in 1969.Scientist will never figure out how it spread but it was not just from homosexuality. How about instead of spewing all your hateful words. Educate yourself and raise money for a cure so we can stop this epidemic. People should be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want with whoever they want. People should take individual responsibilty to make sure they do not spread HIV. Individual responsibility. I'm taught to respect my elders but what about respecting the people that are going to be running the country one day. EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED EQUAL!

I think it's an interesting decision, ironic as Is It says. Obviously it is important to remember that there are ignorant, pathetic, and prejudice people out there (like Helms) and that their opinions can be backwards and damaging. But the fact that Dole has chosen to use Helms' name (and therefore his legacy) to refer to an amendment that completely goes against everything he stood for, ironizes and parodies the opinions he chose to express in a society that becomes less and less tolerant of such discrimination every day. Go Dole! Hopefully people will realize that she isn't so much standing beside him as she is standing behind him and making funny faces.

Actually to ward the end of his career helms did work quite tirelessly to help out with aids epidemic in africa.. now i can understadn that many ppl dont care for his view on homosexuality and aids .. i myself do not.. but i think aids prevention and care is 2 important of issue to turn down any help cheerfully offered no matter who its from.. it should be a lesson to us all to not let personal differeneces and opions deter us from greater good.

I'm a resident of North Carolina, the funeral for Senator Helms was held right by my work and I've met him on several occasions. He was a gentleman to everyone he met and I hate that he gets so much grief, although much of it is based on his beliefs. His policy changed in 2002, which is probably why Senator Dole decided to honor the late Helms and try to put a good bill in his name. I'm not concerned nor embarrassed.

She's cool…she is just like this obese woman sitting across from me at Village Inn at lunchtime.
