Looks like the people at Mattel are receiving some major backlash!
The toy makers have created a new Barbie doll which many are describing as the S&M Barbie.
The doll comes with black fishnet stockings, a black leotard, gloves, and boots.
S&M Barbie is being modeled after DC comic superhero Black Canary.
The Black Canary Barbie doll is scheduled to be released in September, but we'll see if that goes as planned.
Some are just outraged like the religious group Christian Voice, which said, “Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far. A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth.”
Poor Babs.
We bet if she was dressed as Wonder Woman no one would complain. And we all know Wonder Woman's outfit was a bit on the sexy side too!

Um… it's a doll based on a comic book superhero. I'm missing the big deal? Black Canary has been around (and has worn fishnets) since 1947. She's appeared in live action appearances (the short-lived 'Birds of Prey' TV series) as well as animated on CN's 'Justice League'. She's already had a few action figures (available in most toy stores). This is a big non-issue. For more info on her, look her up on wikipedia. She's probably one of the most popular superheroines in the DC universe.
On the plus side, I think the bangs and face look really good on this doll.
The downside is that it is a bit too risque for kids. Saying it is intended for adults is one thing, you know kids will get their hands on it.
I have noticed in my travels that kids are just too oversexed in the West and we cannot seem to do much to discourage it. Teens are peer pressured into sex earlier and earlier in the US. And so little is shared about the downsides.
SNL had a "Gangsta Bitch Barbie" spoof once; this looks a lot like it. Creative girls (and boys?) can dress up a Barbie anyway they like. Ask my sister.

Starfire wears next to nothing so you should be glad that she's not a doll. And I don't think its being marketed towards children, its more for people who are into comic books. When I was a child, we often played dress up and immulated Barbie. What's next? A dress up line for the kiddies? There won't have to be though for this to be problematic. Kids are quite imaginative and need not a cookie cutter dress-up set to TRY to mimic this look. They will. Matel should drop this and leave this kind of stuff to "Adam and Eve" for ADULT collectors.

I didn't buy the Bratz dolls for my 9 year old daughter & I won't buy this either. I am a mom that uses parental controls & channel blocks. I watch all of her shows & listen to her music so I know what she sees & hears. You can't protect children from everything though. Once you start paying attention, you see sex everywhere. It's implied in commercials between children's shows, on magazine covers, posters, ads, & billboards. It's really quite sad, & as a preschool teacher I can say that it affects girls as young as 4. They ask me if they look sexy & are already concerned with their bodies. I am already witnessing the onset of eating disorders & these girls are going to be seriously messed up a decade from now. Something needs to change & soon!

I love how people complain about a Barbie modeled after a legitimate comic book character, yet, I see no complaints about how Barbies collar bone shows or about how she is much thinner than she was in the early 90's when I was still playing with them.
