Amanda Peet Causes a Stir - Issues Apology

Filed under: Baby Blabber > Jenny McCarthy

amandapeetbaby.jpg

Someone might be getting a Jenny McCarthy beatdown!

Amanda Peet had a few choice words for parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids in the July issue of Cookie magazine.

The pro-childhood vaccinations actress said, "parents who don't vaccinate their children are parasites."

Peet has since issued an apology for her 'mean and divisive' comment but stands firm on her position regarding childhood vaccinations.

Like Jenny McCarthy, there are many who believe that vaccinations could cause Autism.

Thankfully, Peet acknowledged that name calling has no place in the ongoing debate.

What do U think about this issue???

There is no proof that vaccines cause autism. The wonderful thing about children is that no matter what kind of diseases they have, a mothers love is unconditional. I would rather have a child with autism then have my child's life cut short by a disease. Parents might not want to vaccinate their children, but I do not want my children to be around others that could possibly give my little ones something that will kill them. I think putting your child in a situation where they could contract a disease and then putting those children in contact with others is irresponsible and selfish. If you want your child susceptible to small pox or malaria go ahead and keep them from getting vaccinating then you wont have to deal with autism…hope the terrible disease and possible death is worth it to not have to deal with taking care of your autistic child. Love you children the way they are and protect them while you have the opportunity they grow up way to fast.

she is only saying that bcz her child is okay. if her child had been affected negatively by these immunizations, she would be fighting to stop them, just like Jenny. either way, I don't feel any innocent child should have to live like that or in any other horrible way.

My husband is a physician and refused to vaccinate our child! Health care professionals know the risk and damages…yet they still put babies and children at risk. Things are changing for the better, and more educated parents are choosing not to vaccinate. The information is right in front of us, open your minds!

For everyone that keeps posting that "you cant go to public school unless your vaccinated" your dead wrong!!! I'm proud to say my child is unvaccinated and in public school! Its just a little extra paperwork for the parent thats all!

I am in the special education field and have done a TON of research on vaccinations. First Amanda has every right to say what she did At least she did her research.. Jenny goes on every show you can think of and says alot of misinformation and stupid people believe it.. so we have children in our schools now who are not vaccinated, which by the way YES KIDS CAN BE IN SCHOOL WITH OUT VACCINATIONS… they just need a waiver from their doctor.. Before Jenny goes on and on about how her son became autisitc due to his vaccinations she should do her research, the MMR vaccination had thermisoal removed in 2001, and she claims vaccinations have caused autism? why do the numbers continue to rise then if the vaccinations have been cleaned up since 2001?? Anyone who researches this topic and has a brain can clearly see that vaccinations do not cause autism.. Jenny can run her mouth all day about this and a mother on the other side of this topic cannot say one thing? Please people stop being ignorant and do your research..

I have seen it I worked with Autistic children. And it is not the vaccinations it's just the MMR shot. Read Jenny's book she doesn't say don't do it she has brought up the One size fits all vaccinations. From the age 2 to 3 the MMR shot has a lot of mercury in it and it can cause seizures which can cause the that kind of autism to surface and by a special diet cleansing the body and brain can be turned around sometimes. Read her book it is amazing!

So what, is an autistic kid the new cool accessory? Cause it seems everyone has got one. Poor ADHD kids. Their days of being a chic medical trend are gone.

I was worried about the risks on both sides of the vaccination coin. If I did vaccinate there were risks for my baby and if I didn’t vaccinate there were other risks, what would I do? Well I was confused however after studying what the Europeans did to the Native Americans I had to vaccinate my babies…

"The decline in the number of America Indians was very rapid after contact with Europeans. This population decline was not due to European intelligence or superior weaponry. It was caused by something less glamorous and heroic. The infectious diseases that Europeans brought with them killed so many American Indians."

I couldn't stand by and wait for my daughters to catch something from somebody in this country, we are a melting pot of many immigrants and I could not take a chance with their lives. Also Breastfed babies experience fewer problems with vaccination so I breastfed my kids to make sure my immunities would prevail during all vaccinations.

Lucky for us there were no problems and now they are outstanding Latina girls making great strides for themselves in school.

  11. 111

America is over-vaccinated and yet we have the MOST "sick" children, ADD, ADHD, Autism, etc. Do the math. Natural is the way to go. And you don't need to have your children vaccinated in order for them to be allowed in schools. If it is against your religion (which is all you need to say) then they can't hold it against you.

  12. emk says – reply to this

    112

There is no science to support the argument that vaccinations cause autism. There are always risks involved in vaccinations, injections, taking medication of any kind. How is it that people have started taking what Jenny McCarthy thinks to be sound medical advice? People who don't vaccinate their kids are technically parasites (this is the term used by physicians): they are banking on the rest of us vaccinating our kids to protect their children from polio and measles and other awful diseases that have never been eradicated but are under control because of widespread vaccinations.

Vaccines are outdated and should not be pushed on people. They have been proven to cause multiple problems in children. People like Peet are ignorant and need to keep their opnions to themselves!

  15. Linds says – reply to this

    115

Jenny McCarthy isn't in favor of NO VACCINATIONS. Vaccinations on their own don't cause autism. It's the combination and schedule of the vaccines that is concerning. And it's the preservatives in the vaccines that mimic environmental toxins.
You're sensationalizing a very serious issue. Perhaps you should research this a bit before you spout off on it.

  16. Jenif says – reply to this

    116

Vaccinations can cause an immune response in children that were predisposed to have autism in their gene. To many vaccinations at one time can cause a severe immunity response in anybody. I am a registered nurse and I have my kids on a delayed vaccination schedule. I never let them vaccinate more than 3 at a time. Amanda is really a stupid bitch, she should do some research before opening up her mouth! Who is Amanda Peet anyway?

  17. annoy says – reply to this

    117

i hate when celebs get all righteous. i believe that the link to autism isn't in vaccinations themselves but in combined vaccines like the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and that children get vaccinated the before they even leave the hospital (hepatitis B) — why does a newborn, with hep. B negative parents NEED a hep B shot? they don't. so if they think the link is vaccines, then be a responsible parent and take your kid in, every 2 weeks if you have to and get the immunizations in separate stages. you CAN get MMR in a series of separate shots instead of the one.
some people think that it's cruel to stick a child over and over again but seriously get a life, shots are a part of being healthy, it doesn't hurt for that long, the kid will get over it.

  18. Melan says – reply to this

    118

The point that she was trying to make probably was that people who choose not to vaccinate their children are reaping the benefits of a those who have been vaccinated. In other words if other peoples children who are vaccinated are not getting sick from certain diseases then they can't pass an illness onto a non-vaccinated child. That is, in essence, parasitic. Some else's child is benefiting from those of us who choose to vaccinate. I certainly would not want my child sitting next to someone on an airplane who has not been vaccinated and is carrying something like meningitis. Furthermore, the latest studies have show autism may be caused by a genetic mutation passed from one or both parents. My son is vaccinated but his doctor has allowed me to space out the injections so he doesn't get them all at one time. People are entitled to think what they want but there is no scientifuc proof just yet about the causes of autism. Autism has been around far longer than some of the vaccinations. Maybe those who find it so objectional should seek out a parent or grandparent who lived during a time period when polio was rampant. I think we are all way too complacent when it comes to communicable diseases. Will it take a resurgence of polio or some deadly strain of measles to get people's attention?

    Re: con

You are a moron. Typically, when a child dies from vaccs it is a direct result of being allergic to a specific protein in EGGS, which is added to vaccs as a preservative.

I agree with Jenny McCarthy. I have a friend that has two boys that got their vaccinations and after that they had Autism. Also, I have a nephew that after his vaccination, he started showing Autism. What a concidence that when vaccinations are given, this awful disease appears. Let the parents decide!!! They are going to be the ones taking care of these children.

  21. Allif says – reply to this

    121

Go Amanda!!! Unfortunately, vaccines do cause harm to a VERY SMALL portion of kids. But REAL SCIENCE has proven that vaccines do not cause autism. This has been proven! I'm glad she is around to be the voice of reason!!

  22. ceec says – reply to this

    122

I thought the Jenny was asking for a better timetable for vaccines? some children have very bad reactions to the shots, but that is very few. Unfortunately, the diseases that you are giving shots for can be deadly. If the majority of the population was not vaccinated, there would be many deaths once an epidemic starts up.

    124

considering thimerosol hasn't been used in regular vaccines (other than flu) since 2002 and considering recent research indicating brain synapse development (or lack thereof) in causing autism, I'd have to say "Team Peet!" Vaccines are necessary, however, perhaps they could spread them out more or not require unnecessary ones like the HPV vaccine to alleviate the fears of some of these parents. Vaccines save lives! If we stop, we will see a resurgence of all of the so-called eradicated illness; it will be like living in a 3rd world country.

    127

I think Ms. Peet is letting a government agency play the fear monger card on her child's health. Not her fault, she, like many Americans, choose to blindly believe others before doing the research on this matter herself.
Advice: Be clear on what or who is doing the clinical studies, Ms. Sweetie-Peetie, because everyone has an agenda to promote.
Vaccinations are not good for everyone…period!

  28. Dawn says – reply to this

    128

I think that if she knew as much as I do on this subject she'd realize that I am far from a "parasite" but a concerned parent! I am not anti vaccine all together but I am completely anti toxins, and just take a look at what we are having pumped into our children and just how much! This angers me! I know enough about the subject to make a secure decision for my family and also to not judge others regardless of thier opinion on vaccines!

  29. JB11 says – reply to this

Amanda Peet you are a bitch. Lets see what you do if your child is diagnosed with Autism. I'm not saying that vaccines are the problem but you do whatever it takes when its in your family. 36. katie says – reply to this

    136

They ARE parasites! Their existence is dependent upon the existence of other, healthy, vaccinated children. There is no proof that vaccinations cause autism: thimerisol was removed from shots years ago, it is only in SOME flu shots and non-thimerisol flu shots ARE available. The ONE case where a medical examining committee awarded money to an autistic girl was b/c she has a PRE-EXISTING condition which the bundled shots MAY have exacerbated, BUT they did note that had she caught one of the diseases which the shots protect against, she would've ended up compromised in some other way, or have even died.
I appreciate Jenny McCarthy's passion, but it is fueled by emotion not fact. She is putting other children at risk for something she can not prove about her own child.

  37. k. says – reply to this

    137

wow. way to have the balls to start such a heavy discussion. I vaccinate my kids, because I grew up in a country where they didn't have vaccinations and I saw countless children dying around me every day. My own mother almost died of polio and now lives in constant pain, with scars like road maps running up and down her legs. Dr. Wakefield, the dr. responsible for the original anti-vaccination research published in the lancet in 1994 has actually been placed under review for un-ethical reseach methods, and 10 of the 13 other doctors who took part in that research have since recanted their position. The Lancet itself has published an additional article claiming no co-relation. It is by all accounts a question of mercury levels in the vaccines that causes concern, and they now administer mercury free vaccinations just to be on the safe side. Its a parents choice, but I don't want my babies dying of something that I know I could have prevented.

  38. kara says – reply to this

I think that parents with autistic children are looking for an answer…something to identifiy what caused their beautiful child to have to endure the struggle that comes with being autistic. I don't think that vaccinations are the cause, but I really can't fault parents dealing with the disease for wanting to find someone/something to blames. It's a senseless disease and no parent wants their child to have to struggle or overcome such a difficulty for the rest of his/her life.

    153

I am a registered nurse who has researched this topic. The studies on the link between autism and vaccinations are not valid, and repeat studies have not found a connection between autism and vaccinations. What I do know is that measles, mumps, rubella, diptheria, and polo SUCK, and the chances of your child having a reaction to the vaccination is very slim. If you plan to homeschool and keep your child "in a bubble" then go ahead and skip out on vaccinations. I am really interested to see what will happen if the un vaccinated children of our country start getting these horrible diseases. I am always an advocate of more research and trying to improve vaccinations, but to deprive your child of medications which could save your child's life in the mean time is just risky. I would rather have an autistic child than a dead child.

Its not just vaccines that cause it. It is our inability to take a moment and think about what we are doing, and what we are giving ourselves and our children, without even realizing it.

Jenny McCarthy isn't against vaccinations - she is against the amount of vaccinations currently required, and the speed at which they are administered (clost to 30 vaccinations by age 2). She has made it clear in interviews and in her books that she is not against vaccinations.

  57. opi says – reply to this

    157

Yeah, she said it badly, but she's right. There is a MUCH greater chance of your kid getting hurt every time you strap them into a car seat and take to the road than there is of getting hurt from a vaccination. And, the repercussions of not vaccinating and contracting disease are SO ugly, for the child and for the public at large. Do the math. People don't understand the concept of risk and choose to live in fear of things that have little chance of hurting them while ignoring real threats. I can't understand what reasoning these anti-vaccination people are using (none?) because they say the autism risk is a result of mercury in vaccines, yet the only vaccine that has contained even a trace of mercury since 2001 is the flu vaccine (totally voluntary), yet autism rates have continued to climb in that time. I know these parents are scared, but fear is the greatest cause of illogical thinking. They need answers and they're not going to find them by going after vaccines. Jenny McCarthy is speaking out irresponsibly and that is the true danger.

  58. ok says – reply to this

    158

let's say it is the MMR. Hmmm….well, all of us got the MMR not once, but twice, back in the day when mercury was everywhere (they couldn't care less), yet autism didn't even exist then. Some children diagnosed with autism don't have it. They get better medical treatment with an actual diagnosis than someone who fits in the continuum of normal human behavior. Technically, I'd be diagnosed with it if I was a child today. Let's see…I am considered "gifted," I hate making eye contact, I don't really like to be touched (too much! hee hee) and I hate socializing. They ARE NOT using thimerosol in regular vaccines, people!! It was stopped in 2002. It is a synapse syndrome; learn about neurotransmitters. Vaccines are a good scapegoat, but it draws focus away from true causes and treatments and could lead to epidemics of old diseases. Oh, and measles and rubella can be deadly.

What Research are you talking about? The more research you do, you will find out that there is no link to vaccinations and Autism. People who do not vaccinate their children are selfish. What if they pick up a virus of some sort and are around a child who is too young to be vaccinated? Then that child gets it and passes it to another. People who were around before vaccinations had been discovered would be appalled. We are lucky to have vaccinations now instead of thousands upon thousands of deaths.

VACCINATE YOUR CHILDREN. look at actual medical studies. there is NO LINK. " UNQUOTE is an incomplete statement

Most of the people who make these ignorant statements have quite simply NOT done their research. For those who fall for the incorrect advertisement that Thimerosal was removed need to actually read the ingredient lists on these vaccines. It still remains in "trace amounts" just like "fat free" claims - a product call itself "free" of something if it falls below a certian level. Parents…. Vaccines still contain mercury!!!!

BTW.. Amanda Peet in no way wrote the apology. The wording quite simply did not follow her speech patterns. Someone wrote it for her.

It is so disappointing that we have vaccinations for many It is so disappointing that parents choice not to vaccinate their children. It is there choice, however, they are putting the public in danger. I generally believe the parents who choice not to vaccinate their children expect all other parents to– thus protecting their own. It isn’t fair and many diseases that were once eradicated in the US are on the rise. I am a Mom, but I do not know what it is like though to have a child with Autism. I do feel for those parents. However, if you read a recent Time magazine report, it is very hard to establish a direct link between Autism and vaccinations – perhaps only one has been found. So in the event that it is true, it is very rare. Like with most medications there are side effects. However, the thought of polio and other types of diseases resurfacing would be much more board, sweeping, and devastating.

PS - you can skip the vaccinations for chicken pox and measles. I think that most people agree those aren't a big deal. I don't think that is what the debate is about…

The vast majority of us got vaccines and we are fine. Just make the vaccines safer and no mercury.

Amanda Peet is a friggin', no-talented twit who should just shut up about everything.
    That's my opinion.

GREEN OUR VACCINES! Jenny is not opposed to vaccines. Get over yourselves… People are making the best informed decisions possible for their kids! Do I think the vaccines CAUSE autism - NO. Do I think they can trigger it - YES.

I will choose to vaccinate my children at a slower pace and separate out shots. No child needs 6 shots/vaccines in one sitting. That's just IDIOTIC!

Vaccinations that infants get at birth are for diseases they wouldn't be exposed to. They have more of a chance of getting autism or dying than getting those diseases. I will never have my new born vaccinated. Maybe when they are old enough for school and have developed, before I put a man made vaccination into their bodies!

I would stagger vaccines. It's a parent's choice to give vax or not to their children, but let's make this clear- if your child is not vaccinated, your child should not be allowed to daycare or public schools. AND do not cite "religion" if that is not the actual reason why you're not vaccinating your kids. Bottom line: I do not feel comfortable giving little babies so many shots all at once, but by the time your kid is to enter school- have them vaccinated- it's not fair that they would be benefitting from those who choose to vaccinate (very nervously in my case).

A child is exposed to like a million antigens a day just in their environment, not to mention when at the mall etc.= so the specific antigens that they are exposed are much less in amount and no more harmful than the ones they pick up everyday. Plus it is proven that when immunization rates drop disease rates go up= measles outbreak in Europe right now…..please read the SCIENTIFIC research.

Three months after receiving a tetanus shot I still have nerve damage. I will be much more vigilant about vaccines when I have children. Parents won't leave their child alone in a room for two minutes, but they'll blindly inject their kids with vaccines without doing any research. Pharmaceutical companies are a big lobby group… no wonder the government pushes so hard for vaccines. Good job to the parents who do their research and make informed decisions.

    She's right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is ABSOLUTELY NO evidence that vaccines cause autism. The original "doctor" who said that they do LOST HIS LICENSE for falsifying data.

Blaming vaccines just another way for parents to get up in arms and blame doctors for a disorder that existed for A LONG TIME. Autism is not OCCURRING more frequently. It's being DIAGNOSED more frequently because we know the early indicators of it now.

    Re: Tonya

Autism cannot be diagnosed until a child is over the age of 2 (and usually then diagnosis is inconclusive). Is this not strange since vaccinations are usually (almost) finished around 2 years old? If vaccinations cause autism spectrum disorders, then diagnosis should be possible before the age of two. There may be a correlation that suggests vaccinations may be related to autism, but never have vaccs caused a case of autism.

It would be interesting, however, to take two genetically identical male twins with a genetic history of autism, vaccinate one, and deny all vaccinations to the other to see how the vaccinated child fares in comparison to his brother. But would that not be unethical to the nonvaccinated child who would me susceptible to illness?

Well, this is certainly timely. A neighboring community to mine is experiencing a large pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak, and the blame is being placed squarely on the shoulders of the parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids. A local pediatrician voiced his frustration with these parents in a newspaper article. Everyone is at risk because of these people!

Re: PinkS – Here's where you're proving you're a MORON. Jenny McCarthy isn't anti-vaccine, she's for "greening" the vaccines. Not all children react the same way to vaccines. It's not just autism, some of these children DIE!! So, I guess you're all for pumping babies full of mercury, formaldehyde, bovine (beef carcass) and all other sort of chemicals?? RIGHT…read up, get informed BEFORE you make statements/judgments.

Re: jg – Agree with you totaly, and measles and chicken pox should be the least of the worries, What about the more serious dieases that vaccines protect us from. Yes vacines have side effects, but I would pick that over an outbreak of polio, my aunt had that as a child and now she is permently crippled she is lucky to be alive. Or diphtheria which causes the progressive deterioration of myelin sheaths in the central and peripheral nervous system leading to degenerating motor control and loss of sensation, paralysis and DEATH. THANK GOD FOR VACCINES.

totally agree with amanda peet - children died of measles and smallpox far more than they will suffer from autism. 1/4 boys is more likely to be autistic yet they are vaccinated at the same rate as girls so I refuse to believe the people who are not scientists who struggle to cause a link. New research says that Autism is genetic.

    VACCINATIONS DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM.

That is a modern-day old wives' tale. Whenever I hear someone believe that idiocy, my opinion of their intelligence goes way way way down.

It's the smoking, drinking, bad nutrition, and pill-popping by the momma when she's pregnant that causes your kid to have ailments like that. And plain simple genetics too.

Further studies need to be completed. Some children begin displaying characteristics of autism after their immunizations - but this could be coincidental due to the fact that not many children have verbal communication skills before this time. What's misunderstood is almost all children have the same actions & babbling until a certain age, even individuals who are Deaf babble when they're around 3 months old - it's innate. When people speak of their child being "cured" of autism, it actually may have to do with immunizations - sometimes they can slow down the myelinization of the brain, which causes autistic tendencies, which in time "catches up". It's completely understandable to choose a side, but parasites? That sounds pretty uneducated & a direct insult to individuals with valid concerns

  93. sarah says – reply to this

    193

I totally agree with Amanda. Those who are against vaccines are standing on very shaky ground (scientifically). On another note, the fact that Jenny calims her son was "cured" of Austism is disturbing. It's not a disease, it's a condition.

    194

Let's stop the bashing and remember that kids who are not vaccinated are open to contract all the diseases that we vaccinate for. That's why we are seeing a return or polio, etc. Vaccination is a choice but make the choice in an informed way. There is NO empirical evidence that shows that vaccination causes Autism.

  95. reald says – reply to this

    195

For all those people out there that are so proud that they have not vaccinated their kids and they are not sick, its probably from a concept called "Herd Immunity" in that when a large enough proportion of a population is protected (VACCINATED), the spread of a disease is decreased, thus, protecting those who are NOT VACCINATED. So in essence, those that are vaccinated are in part PROTECTING YOUR UNVACCINATED KIDS. The only thing these parents are doing are F***ING UP THIS CONCEPT OF HERD IMMUNITY.

Re: chele – Your husband has that choice, but not vaccinating your child will not protect him/her from these diseases. I think people forget that we live in an open society and we have people from other countries coming here every day. They perhaps are carrying virus that we have been immune to for years and that's why you see a big rise in childhood diseases, especially among adults and children who did not get vaccinated.

When your child goes blind because he got the measles or ends up with whooping cough or Scarlet Fever, at least your husband can care for him. The rest of us will have to suffer…

Vaccines are important. Maybe those who do not get vacicinated are usually okay because rest of the poulation is vaccinated.
