It's a word that needs to be taken out of the English vocabulary and to have some one like Rev. Jessie Jackson saying is a complete bitch slap to the people who have fought for the rights of the African Community to be referred to as such. And yet, there you have him, a man who says he's for civil rights going back a hundred and some odd years again.

I agree with Elizabeth all the way… in no shape or form should black people continue using the "N" word. That word is associated with poverty, hoodlums, thugs, and the "ghetto". It's rarely used in the Hip Hop world most of all because if you just look at the background of most of the rappers, you will see that they too had originated from the impoverish slums at one point in time. I agree with Elizabeth when she said that the only way we'll ever be able to raise out the "N" word issue is to stop using it. It's pure ignorance that keep many black people in defense of the usage of that word.

It's hard to say what we should do about this word. I think it's an ugly word when people who aren't black use it towards blacks but when I hear my brothers or other guy friends and guy relatives call each other "nigga" I don't think it sounds so bad because it has become a part of pop culture. But since I'm Mexican, I always wonder if black people would get really pissed of if they heard them talk like that.I know the answer will be That yeah they would cuz you have to be black but it's a common thing i hear around me. I get it that it's a word that black people "took back" and started using in their own way but I WOULD NEVER DREAM OF CALLING MYSELF OR MY PEOPLE "WETBACK" OR EVEN "BEANERS"!! That is an offensive word no matter who uses it and it would hurt the same if a fellow Mexican would use it as a white person. I'm not sure if we'll ever understand this whole situation with the N word. Besides doesn't it mean "ignorant"? Anyone can be one so maybe we should use it's proper definition and use it appropriately? Financial aid interview to a very prestigious university in Rhode Island, man said to me that if i was ANY other color that WHITE, i would be eligible for more financial aid from the university. Re: Ronni – 2. Joined the trio program for underrepresented students on campus because I was a first generation college student and have a learning DISABILITY. This program is also open to "minority" students (I put that in quotes because TECHNICALLY here in LA white people are a minority, with hispanics making up 47% of the population–Oops, didn't mean to actually present some real data) Nevertheless, at the first meeting there was no room at the conference table so myself and 2 other white people (who just by happenstance lived in the same dorm as myself) sat at chairs that were not at the table—and you know what the director said to us "it good for you to not to be able to sit at the table because we were not able to sit at the table until the civil rights." –Pardon me? I was 19 yro at the time. I wasn't even born then! Oh and PS I think His comment said more about his prejudice than mine. So i dropped the program–even though i really did need there resources. I still managed to graduate with honors and now am in grad school. Mind you I am one of 2 white people in the program out of 35 students. Hmmmmmm.

3. I think my biggest issue with your comments are that you dear sir are ignorant. The only way black and latinos will ever get social equality is through education. You cannot really argue that the persistent poverty rate in LA among black and latinos isn't correlated to the overall education level of the city? Here in LA and Orange county some HS with mostly hispanic and black student populations have a drop out rate of 75% Do you think that MIGHT have anything to do with the social inequality? This isn't new news, it is true of white people too. Rural white people do really have the same social equality as middle class white people… think of the sterotype–I'm sure you are aware of them.
The only way races will ever achieve social equality is through education. To be educated means you will move up a social class–and then YOU will see that the middle class is NOT racist WE are CLASSISTs.

When African Americans use the N word to each other, then are very comfortable in knowing that it is not being used in a derogatory way. However, when someone who is not of African-American heritage uses the word, there is still a question in the back of a person's mind if it is being use maliciously. That is why there is a differnce in who can and cannot use the word. In essence, if resembles the situation of when you can say things about your sister or brother but dare not let anyone else say those same things! Please get it straight. I live in Emeryville,CA near OAKLAND…Last year I was shopping at the HOME DEPOTin my town when this African American cashier was very rude to me…I remarked to her "you are being so Ghetto"…she then hollered out loud "this guy is a hater, he said Ghetto!"

As a black person, i totally agreee with Elizabeth on this, I am African and i totally cant relate with African-Americans with what they went through in America but, when Elizabeth said…"why say a word that degrades my culture." she hit a bulls-eye. I'm mexican and see no need for MTV Tres, anyway, the Latin American version is better because they play artists in different languages from all musical genres. Speaking as a white, middle class woman in our society, I truly believe that Whoopi is right here. I completely disagree with commenters who are pretty much saying that black people have to "get over" what was done to them. Whoopi makes an exellent point, and it is important to acknowledge that African Americans have been systematically persecuted for almost 400 years, whereas other nationalities and ethnic groups have been able to move up within our society. Discrimination and hatred towards blacks runs rampant in our society at an individual, communal, and systemic level, and I believe it is ignorant for a white person to tell a black person that they cannot use a word that has become a culturally black word with many meanings. A white person calling a black person the n-word is associated with racism, hatred, and intolerance, based upon 400 years of the use of that word backed up by slavery, de jure segregation via Jim Crow legislation and now, in the present, de facto segregation. I do not feel that I have any right to judge how a black person uses the n-word, since I do not know and understand the deep cultural roots that it brings out. I do feel that when a black person is saying it to another black person it does not denote a feeling of superiority, as it would were a white person to say it.
And to be honest, I think Elizabeth made a fool of herself by trying to assume she understood how Whoopi felt as a black woman growing up in the United States and thinking that she could intelligently comment upon how a woman who's family was brought to this country in chains should not be able to use a word that has become powerful and meaningful in an arguably positive way. Elisabeth needed to listen to Whoopi and try to listen to her history so as to be able to act as an intelligent 3rd party instead of interrupting her and making herself look like another ignorant white person who thinks they really do understand what black people have been through.

If you check your facts and statistics there are actually a higher number of whites in jail, on welfare, having children out of wedlock(HELLO teen pregancy pact in Boston and the majority of people in Hollywood having babies out of wedlock are white-see Brangelina among many others) committing mass school shootings, in trailer parks (compared to the black middle class and above-Oprah,etc., as you compared poor blacks to white middle class and above), serial killers, etc. Blacks and Latinos if you do your research are actually FAR more likely to get a much stricter sentence for the exact same crime as a white person. Re: Kam – I knew what HJ meant. If it is acceptable for blacks, it should be for whites. It's called equality. We are supposed to have that now, though you will I am sure you'll disagree. White kids, who aren't old enough to have learned that "history" will hear it somewhere, whether the supermarket or in a song or in a movie theater by the black teens hanging in the halls. They will in turn use it thinking it is a "cool" word because the teens are using it. Michael P. Tremoglie, in "The Black Roots of Slavery" also noted the issue of Black slave owners.
"There were many free blacks in the American colonies. These free blacks owned slaves …free Negroes had a real economic interest in the institution of slavery and held slaves in order to improve their economic status."
The census of 1830 lists 965 free black slave owners in Louisiana, owning 4,206 slaves. The state of South Carolina, lists 464 free blacks owning 2,715 slaves.
Harry Koger, in "Black Slave Owners. Free Black Slave Masters in South Carolina", reported on the success of Black women in Charleston. "By 1860, so many Black women in Charleston had inherited or been given slaves and other property by white men, and used their property to start successful businesses, that they owned 70% of the Black owned slaves in the city."
I think this is a good argument that white folk weren't the only ones at fault during your ancestor's lives. For all I know your ancestors were slave owners too.

Did it ever occur to you that many white americans are not decendents of slave owners. Many people in this country today are decendants of people who didn't even live in this country during slavery. Every American regardless of skin color learns about the suffering of africans in america. It is part of the educational curriculum, we have black history month, and there are countless films.
What in the hell would be jusifiable about someone being discriminated against because of the acts of their ancestors? Discrimination is discrimination. I am white and I am so ashamed that slavery happened in this country, but we fought a war to abolish it. That war is over. Black slavery in America was a little little piece of history in the big picture as well. Let's get to the next phase, we can never get there with hate and resentment.
