did u just google: did black people own slaves, please tell me they did?" right now?

well. a true educated person will tell you this..you might think that blacks owned slaves here in america…reality is THAT IS not true.

TRUE HISTORY: ALL OF THOSE FREE SLAVES WERE "HUSTLERS", THEY PURCHASED THEIR FAMILY FROM THE WHITE MEN TO "WORK" FOR THEM BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY A WAY TO GET THEIR FAMILIES AND SOMETIMES NON RELATIVES AWAY FROM THE HORRID CONDITIONS THE WHITE MEN WERE PUTTING THEM THROUGH. THEY ALL WORKED TOGETHER AND ALL CONTRIBUTED FROM IT, AND GOT PAID!!

IDIOT. DONT CHALLENGE ME. END OF DISCUSSION :D

I think it is a double standard. It's not that white people want to use the word, it is that it is offensive just as the word "cracker" is. Tell me….do African Americans take pride in using words born from hate? and also…do you think you will ever be "equal" as long as a word born from hate is being used? People will never be equal as long as words born from hate are used to stoke the fires of "difference".

Re: bRIAN – yes, black people are given equal opportunity to express their culture via mass media outlets (which by the way are filtered and owned by incredibly wealthy people who have no connection to the vast majority of the minority working class who perhaps tunes into these outlets). but really, i think you miss the point of what these things mean, and that is that they are different outlets to perpetuate black solidarity and forge a continuously positive role for African Americans in our society. But you must remember that outlets such as BET often depict incredibly stereotyped caricatures of African Americans in our society (women, money, etc.), and really that's not what I am talking about. If you want to understand why the notion of the kind of "whites only" outlets that you have just suggested, perhaps you should read some Malcolm X and get yourself acquainted with an incredibly intelligent black voice who, at the end of his life (Nov 1964-Feb 1965 specifically) was a proponent of both black solidarity (NOT separation!) and TRUE integration between all races!

Whoopi is wrong. She says Elizabeth will never understand because they live in two different worlds. The "two different worlds" will NEVER come together if one of the worlds is allowed to say that word and the other world is not. This argument makes no sense to me. Why would black people want to use a word that was filled with IMMENSE hate. This word was used when blacks were lynched back in those days. It's hard to even imagine how much hate that word was filled with.

You've just heard about it like the rest of the world. The point is slavery is no longer present. Why? Because it was realized that it was wrong. Who helped end that? A lot of people INCLUDING the caucasian race.

The people who caused all this racism to begin with are long gone.
We can and do acknowledge the fact that yes, slavery did happen and it was a terrible terrible time, but i think it's time to move on.

I didn't personally do that to you. Neither did the rest of the white people in the world today. We're individual people so please stop being so iggnorant of us.

I love all people regardless of their skin tone. I have black people and mexican people in my family. I don't hate Kam. I am against inequality, I am against what happend and is happening to blacks in america, but we can't change or make up for the past. We can only change the future. Isn't that what Barack wants? Isn't that what you want? I am sorry for you Kamille. You have a lot of negativity. This country needs positive attitudes working together for positive change. It's 2008, you are obviously a well educated, middle-upper class person. Your life started what 20 years ago? Why do you hate white people so much, if you don't you sure do come across as such. 27. 1027

Kam, I've read thru here and all of your comments. The do seem very closed minded and negative towards white people. We white people that are alive today are not the ones that held you captive. Those people are gone. What was done was wrong, but to keep holding on to it just makes you a slave to it. Free yourself girl….love all! I am originally from England and I've felt racism first hand–terrible things. For many years after moving to the US….do I hate Americans? No. I will proudly become one next year. People change and evolve. Do I hate Germans for bombing London during the blitz and almost killing my dad? No, I don't. It's called not being racist and accepting all…..no matter the race or color. Racism affects white people just as much as it affects black people now….I'm not saying forget what your people went thru…never forget. But dwelling on it is not good for the soul–you must learn to forgive the past. The past can't be changed. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    1034

the N word is NOT a term of endearment, i do not care WHO uses it. Whether its a word just to say "what's up bro" or to be offensive, the original meaning for it to be degrading to the black community is and SHOULD be the first thing to come to a person's mind. And with that word being thrown around the way it is, despite who's saying it, keeps racism around. If everyone just never spoke it again, then maybe we could all move forward from the awful times of when it was used regularly, and maybe finally stop seeing each other as N's and Crackers and finally start seeing each other as human beings.
Give peace a chance. I am 21 years old and a white female. I have never used the N word before in my life, nor do i approve of it being said around me, and nor will i support media and music that encourage the usage of that word, derogatory or not. I believe in equality to the fullest extent of the word, and believe that the only way to reach it is to stop using words and past situations to hold us back from becoming one.
Our ancestors made mistakes, and nothing will change that, but we have the power to change the future by simply trying to not make the same mistakes our ancestors made, not to repeat things that made this country awful at times.

One final note: there is no such thing as REVERSED racism, racism is racism whether it's against a black, white, hispanic, asain, etc.The only way racism can be reversed, is to have no longer have it exist.

"Simply by being white means that you will NEVER EXPERIENCE IT!!" Wrong, wrong, wrong!!! It's just that we're expected to overlook it when it happens to us. I've experienced it many times as a white person, though I'm expected to grin and bare it. Funny thing is, my ancestors didn't enslave anyone. My family hasn't been in this country long enough to have partaken in slavery. Yet, I'm still a nasty white person.

"if this girl had a clue about any kind of human struggle she would be a democrat." You are utterly clueless. My grandparents had to struggle through the Great Depression, married with nothing, and had no support from their families because their families had nothing. My grandpa went to college on the GI Bill, but still worked a full-time job while going to school full-time and raising a family. He was lucky to sleep 3 hours a night. Once he graduated and got a job, he continued studying full-time through grad school and also took on another full-time job, since his first one didn't pay enough. Tell me he didn't struggle!

After all the years of hard work my Grandpa put in to get ahead in his field, he decided to become a Republican. He never took a single handout from anyone, worked his butt off to succeed, and decided he didn't want to fund anyone who wasn't willing to put forth the amount of effort he did to support himself and his family.

ps. no u were not a victim of racism just becasue you had a british accent..lies haha

  39. Jack says – reply to this

    1039

Laura 32: although i haven't read all your posts or the posts you're responding too, i agree completely with you.

No one can change what happened when there were slaves, just like no one can change that the holocaust took place. Unfortunately it did, but the only way that we can prevent such awful things from happening again to any race, is to become one. I know that this is difficult, especially coming from a white person, but although if your race/religion went through awful situations, you must try to move on from them, or else history will repeat itself. I hope no one ever forgets what happened, it was truly awful, but if we can not get past it, and continue to hold grudges against people who no are no longer around and take it out on those of the same race and color, our country will destroy itself. I hope every black person always remembers those awful years, and every jewish and polish perosn remembers the holocaust, but if we continue to hold it against every white or german, we can never evolve.
This is not meant to act like these situations never took place, but rather to embrace how far we have come from those awful times.

This whole blog is sooo funny to me. First some say "How are we gonna explain to our kids?" Then some say "Blacks are ignorent, why would they want to keep demeaning themselves" I say aren't your little kids smart enough to understand the difference that black people were smart enough to turn the word around. It's not rocket science. Saying that we are trying to heal the divide is BS because guess what it flows off of the tongues of racist (insert any color here) so easily and that isn't about to change whether black folks stop saying it or not. (look at some of these post for an example)

Another thing that irritates me is how folks say slavery was sooo long ago. But racism didn't stop when slavery stopped….ummm the US was still segregated in the 60's not even 40 years ago. BUT white people wouldn't know (or remember) about that because it is not taught in history books. Which leads me to why there is BET and other so called black exclusive things (magazines etc) it's because black people didn't see themselves in the other magazines and on tv stations. Now it's a little more racially diverse but it's become a part of their culture.

I saw this whole clip as a white women (Elisebeth) not being in the "in" crowd. For once she is being told she can't have something. Just as white folks say "they never enslaved any black people", why are you so offended by the word when black people use it amoung themselves? Why does it "hurt you so" You didn't enslve any black people, right?

Re: Kam – Kam, who are you to tell someone they are not a victim of racism?
how would you feel if i said the same about you?

I'm white, i've lived in america all 21 years of life and i'm a female, i've been a victim of racism countless times, yet i doubt you'd believe it, becuase it sounds like you believe it could only happen to those where drastic actions have been taken onto — such as slavery and the holocaust, but heres something, YOU were not a victim of slavery, so unless you plan to accept that at some point or another, almost everyone will be a victim, then you have no right to ever believe you were/are one either. Blacks and jews are not the only victims in the world, and although your comment was not towards me, i believe you'll find it even less likely that a person like me can be a victim, but you're wrong, and you will hold htis country back if you can't realize that racism can touch anyone.

OK… I understand where whoopi and Sherrie are coming from and how they feel that when white peeps use the word it is more offensive and yes sometimes that is the case unfortunatley. However, if they only listened to what Elizabeth was saying instead of just saying i can use it but you cant, they would hear that Elizabeth is saying that pop culture and in this case black artists use this term and therfore send out the message to others such as impressionable teens that it is an acceptable thing to say. Therefore they may use the term not meaning it to be offensive but a black person will take offense to it and thus creating hatred and dividing people. Whereas, if everyone is on the same page about the word or any other word for that fact in can promote equality!!!! ALSO if whoopi and Sherrie believe white people should not use this word in any way as it is offensive then thay too should not be offensive to other cultures in their stand up comedy acts either by using derogatory words!!! And what about that time Whoopi was dating Ted Danson and for the awards show she came with him and he had a black face painted on? What up with that? And to peeps like Ronnie who say whites dont suffer from equalities or disadvantages you too are ignorant because many europeans come to this country and are immigrants who sometimes do not know the language and are treated unfairly as well. Lets all get reall people and instead of trying to be right try making it right!!!!!!

And no one is to say that being a victim of PREJUDICE is any less serious than being a victim of racism, so i would hope that maybe you would be an understanding person and realize that. 58. 1058

I never thought i'd say this…but i TOTALLY agree with elizabeth.
news flash whoopi: i'm gonna go ahead and presume that your mother was also a woman? Meaning she wouldn't have been able to vote anyways, so that argument in itself is completely invalid.
If you want to be treated equally by everyone and make it one world, stop creating your own divisions. All these double standards and this hypocrisy is making you your own worst enemy.

  59. 1059

Re: hahah – It doesn't hurt me, and I don't want to use the word personally myself. But it's a vile word. I don't think it can be changed into a "good word" —a word of empowerment? I couldn't imagine calling my mom a bloody limey because it was trying to be made into a British empowerment….It's ridiculous. A word that is so negative and full of so many painful memories should be shunned and done away with.
My question is why would black people WANT to use that word? Really. I don't buy the empowerment thing….there are WAY nicer ways to empower or endear someone….I think, and this is just a thought–that if the word disappeared that they would feel like they were losing part of their history and what happened to their ancestors. Because to truly move forward the word shouldn't be used. If my 5 year old niece overheard the N word in the mall and then started yelling it over and over and over again then people would think I'm a horrible person and that she must've learned it from me(when I hate that word). Well she wouldn't overhear or learn the word if it wasn't being spoken in the first place.

Heading to bed. WOW did the ladies of the View ever make this into a hot topic eh? I truly think that Whoopi and Sherri seemed very ignorant today. Whoopi surprised me. Saying we live in different worlds…THAT is the kind of statement that separates us and breeds racism.

  60. 1060

I'm white and I say "Cracka" all of the time. Pretty much because it's a hilarious word. But there's no oppression behind that word, so yeah. I'll admit, don't know what it's like to be black. And therefore it's difficult to even have an opinion on the subject.

resonse to Laura and Jack: first Jack… i never said that being a victim of prejudice or xenophobia is better than being a victim of racism..im just stating that their different things. and LAURA SHOULDNT BE GOING AROUND TELLING PEOPLE SHES A VICTIM OF RACISM WHEN SHE WAS a VICTIM OF SOMETHING ELSE.

basically im helping her perfect her sob story… hahaha

and Laura: you said " why would black ppl want to use that word?" the true question is: WHY THE FUCK DO U CARE?! lmao

what does it matter to white ppl if black ppl use it or not. let black ppl have something for themsleves for once gosh haha

  64. 1064

Kam, yes I googled it! LOL And yes it was Racism. Horrible, terrible racism. For being English.

"Racism has existed throughout human history. It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another — or the belief that another person is less than human — because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes"

So yeah….I do KNOW what racism is like. I didn't go into details everything I went thru since I was 7, but it was for many years……and my entire family. Because of m y place of birth and language. I'm sure many emigrants can relate to me.

Racism is the most stupid thing I know and that makes me angry !! You are saying you dont like black people!!?? That is so stupid this is not about a group of person this is about a lot of person, all different. I never used in my entire life the N word because it is really mean!! I am white and I never had any problem whit any black person because there is NO difference between us!

I love Elizabeth but, my God, did she make a fool out of herself here. All she had to do was just stay quiet while the subject was discussed. The fact that she got all wound up over the issue is clear indication that she has a lot of bottled up guilt about it that she felt she had to release. You can bet your bottom dollar that the N-word is used a lot in her house and she felt guilty about it here and she went waaaaay overboard. I would have just stayed completely silent.

    1067

Laura: no its prejudice sweetie. racism is just that, when you dont like somebody because of their RACE, which then ties into customs, language, and place of birth which is prejudice.
and xenophobia: fear of foreign ppl.
and by the way can u give me an example of the "horrible horrible racism that u say?" please…no lies.

  68. 1068

Kam…..it's just a double standard. I don't want to use the word–I hate that word. But if you can use the word then why can't we? Not in a mean way, but to greet others like you all do? I've heard black people greet their white friends with the N word many times. I think you are young and have much growing up to do sweetie. Night. xxxxxxxx Oh and I never TOLD my "sob" stories, not in any detail. I was just mentioning it to show that racism affects MANY people. Not just black people. I will not sit here and argue with someone I don't even know when they obviously don't know what they are talking about, and think they are right and that's it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that black and white females got the vote at the same time. White men could vote, of course. Then after the Civil War, black men were able to vote, but neither black or white women were allowed to vote until August, 1920. I wonder why Whoopie told Elizabitchh that they lived in two different worlds and E-Bitch said that they didn't and Whoopass then said, "My own mother did not get to vote." Well, Whoopie - neither black nor white women got to vote. I wonder if Whoopie might be a little on the slow side. Her previous ridiculous comments about Michael Vic and his vicious dog-fighting being a normal part of his culture were half-retarded. I can't stand Elizabitch though. She just won't shut up and keeps yap, yap yapping. She should be OFF the show pronto.

U DONT SEE AN ASIAN OR A HISPANIC WHINING AND COMPLAING ABOUT WHY THEY CANT USE IT!
I PERSONALLY FEEL ITS A BIGGER ISSUE THAN A DOUBLE STANDARD. I FEEL WHITE PPL ARE MAD THAT BLACK PPL HAVE TURNED A WORD FILLED WITH HATE AND TOOK THE VENOM OUT OF IT.

I agree with Elizabeth…I think the "N" word should not be used by anyone, regardless of their skin color. African Americans that use it as a term of endearment or to "reverse" the negative connotation that is associated with that word does nothing to help their cause.

This was so staged. for ratings. You would have to be an idiot to believe that this just happened. This show is so phony. Whoppi Goldberg and Sherri Shephard setthe stage for the argument and then turned up the heat. Elizabeth went into it too easily. Hell if she is so naive what is she doing having a child at all. I do not believe that these women come one this show after the Star Jones incident without FULL knowledge of the protocol to be expected of them and they would not have carried to the extent that they did had it not been STAGED. Phony tears and all from Hasselback. Why so people will tune in tomorrow to see if anyone is still pissed or if they are bff's again. Give me a break. I quit watching that show a long time ago. After watching this footage I am reminded why.

Just like I can sit here and understand why you and a host of other on this blog don't understand. It's not meant for you to understand. Maybe some diversity training is what some folks need it's called acceptance. Acceptance of Gay people, Acceptance of straight people, acceptance of people people.

Once again the kid card is old. My five year old overheard someone calling someone FAT, and called someone else fat in public. It wasn't nice and I corrected her. Please don't tell me your little five year old isn't as smart as mine. And why would your five year old hear the term unless she was listening to rap music (not age appropriate) or heard it in your circle… And since when does a five year old or any other person take presidence over something another culture has embraced? Especially when that thing can be explained so simply. But why explain it, we'll just make them stop using it all together, yes that's easier then explaning the whole segregation thing and where the word came from to begin with, besides that whole thing makes us look bad.

Why do you have soooo much pain. Puhleeze save the drama.

response to whoop: this is a response to whoop and all the others who have been saying, black men could vote b4 all women could vote.
yes black men did have the "right" to vote before women of ne color, that is true, but that doesnt mean they were "allowed" to vote. and whoopi goldberg had validation when she said that her mom couldnt vote because after 1920, when the law passed that women could vote, her mom still couldnt vote because she was black.

so NO BLACK PPL, MAN OR WOMAN WAS ALLOWED TO VOTE UNTIL THE 60'S. less than 40 years ago. thats why i dont like these biased history books. not learning the truth.

FINALLY a person admits to the REAL reason this is a problem for some white folks. Save all the it's a nasty vile word. If you really felt that way why would you want to use it like black folks? Why would you want to greet people that way, not in a mean way…of course. My dear you just put your whole argument to the gutter. You see you outed yourself with that post….Sad some white folks really believe black people are THAT dumb.

Like I said in the begining this whole issue is deeply rooted in the fact that some black people choose to say a word that you feel you can't. I say you feel you can't because A LOT of white kids in their own diverse circle are allowed to say it to their black and white friends (as a term of endearment GASP!!), you know why because they embraced the other kids culture, they accepted them. We can learn alot from some of those kids.

I don't understand why Whoopi got all into this.
Dude. You may be black, but the "N" word,
    WAS NEVER A GOOD TERM.
That's like calling yourself an "a**hole".
It's giving yourself a bad name.
I understand where Elizabeth is coming from.
We shouldn't even use the word AT ALL,
    or ANY at that matter.
Anyone that uses the word just for the fun of it,
is wrong, because you're taking on that name,
and almost giving more pride to it.
You think they like being called all of the names
    they get?
WE DO LIVE IN ONE WORLD.
And using words like this isn't going to help
    us from discrimination and stereotyping!
EVEN IF THE BLACK PEOPLE USE IT THEMSELVES,
    I don't understand why! It's almost hypocritical.
If they find it as a fun term to use,
why can't the white people use it if it's no offense either?
It doesn't make sense. Whoopi did a horrible job explaining
her side; it's just not right.
When we're called "crackers" WE DON'T FLIP OUT.
But when they're call the "n" word, THEY FLIP.
I don't get it! Just stop using it all together.
Do you like being called a disgusting and
    rude word?
If you do, well brownie points to you-
    but something's wrong with that.
THINK. No one does it anymore,
    but TRY IT.

Re: KAM – I kept meaning to address that part too (the voting thing). This is why white people can't understand… and I accept that, I don't blame them because unless they take african american studies in college they won't know these little tidbits of history the general education history books leave out. That's why it's so irritating when some white people comment on things like this. I don't get angry because they really DON'T KNOW it's not taught. But it is funny how almost all of them remember that africans sold their own into slavery. hahahaha And I'll be the first to admit that some black folks don't know their history either…. but the difference is they are smart enough to keep their mouth shut when they aren't versed on a subject. I don't know what it's like to be latino so I would never comment on anything that culture does or doesnt do.

Re: Averi – It is certainly your choice not to use it. Don't use it if you don't want to. But DON'T get on your soapbox and tell another culture not to. And then have the nerve to list reason's why they shouldn't. Like all those reason's are going to magically disapear if black people stopped using the word. Like I said previously, the word is not going to go away out of the mouths of racist whether black floks stop using it or not. To think that the thaught that US race issues would be fixed magically with the stoppage of that word is naive at best. Now I think you should really THINK about why this is such a big issue for you personally. Because honestly most black people don't care how they are percieved in the eye of a white person. They don't care that you think it makes them look ignorent when they call each other that word. So why the fuss will you sleep better at night if black people stopped using the word?

  91. 1091

For Sheri to tell Barbara that she "doesn't want to hear that word coming out of her mouth", that's wrong. When Whoopi started talking about her mother not being allowed to vote, what's her point? That's history, it's over, why does she insist on dragging it into the 21st century?
It's too bad that we're still "separate but equal".

As real conservative(see paleoconservative) i.e. not a neo-conservative, I find this show annoying. All of these biddies are the equivalent of cackling hens. Elizabeth is supposed to be a conservative but she is lousy at defending her positions and almost always ends up crying which grates me to no end. The show isn't very fair, however, for allowing 1 conservative to 3 liberals. They need to get a real conservative on there like Michelle Malkin or Laura Ingraham(she handed them their ass when they had her on in the past). Joy Behar is the absolute worst of them all. Whoopi is actually sensible when it comes to fiscal issues; one could say she is a fiscal conservative. The new black woman they have on there now is actually pretty moderate and far funnier than Joy Behar. Joyce is just not funny and she is supposed to be a "comedian". I'd like to knock the shit out of Joy because she really is joyless.

Whoopi and Sherri and their ilk are control freaks, plain and simple — they want to use the word whenever they deem it appropraite but then control other peoples' use of the word.
The same is true of whites who call each other "cracker" and then get all huffed up if a black person uses the word. They don't represent all whites any more than Whoopi speaks for all blacks.
