If you would like a truly balanced society then let’s get rid of welfare….why should I have to pay for you to sit at home with your 10 kids all with different dads? Get out and make something of yourself instead of expecting everyone else to take care of you!

All this crap about "I can say it, but you can't" is bull. First of all, freedom of speech means that if I wanted to be an ignorant fool I could use the word. It doesn't matter if someone doesn't like it, so Whoopi and Sherri need to shut up. I am white and I have black family members. That word is NEVER used by any of us and we don't use derogatory names for the irish (which we all are) either. Why? Well, because it makes no sense to use a derogatory name to talk about ourselves or the ones we love.

Jesse Jackson has always been a hypocrite and a waste of space. Had his comment been made by any white/hispanic/asian person Fox would have been blasting it on the air right away. If as Whoopi and Sherri say Jesse Jackson can say it because he is black, then why didn't he come out and proudly claim ownership of his words? Because he KNOWS it is wrong.

If it is okay for some to say then it is okay for all to say. Welcome to America and FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

I truly dislike Elizabeth. I think she's clueless when it comes to real life issues. However, I think she's right for the FIRST time on this one. It's nonsense that my people (I'm black!) still use this word and fight for using this word. It's offensive and outdated. If white folks can't use this word, neither should black folks. Elizabeth was right. Never thought I'd say it. The liberals and Sherrie are all wrong on this one!!!

Re: Ronni – um i feel probably more racism than black people and latinos because they get everything handed to them because of their race. they can go to school for free, they can get a better job and get treated better at jobs because employers are afraid to do anything to them so they dont get in trouble for being racist. it sucks to hear black people talk about how they can use that word but no one else can. wtf? its just a damn word and frankly is certain people cant use it then no one should be able to use it. i flippin hate people in this day and age because the world is full of hypocrites. im tired of hearing about how racism still exists. it only exists because the people who feel like they get discriminated against bring it upon themselves. ugh i hate people

I don't. And I'm sick of taking shit for it, thanks.

    no no no no no.

i understand what whoopi is saying- to take a word that once meant something terrible and give it a new meaning as a symbol of empowerment.

and i understand what elizabeth is saying- the problem is she cant word it right.

its the double standards that elizabeth doesnt like. and i totally get that. it perpetuates the racism! she wanted to say that teaching her kids its not ok to say the 'n' word, but its ok for her friends to do that….its confusing to a kid! what if she were to say 'but its ok for white people to say this but not a black person to say that'….its just stupid. eventually the world will take any derogetory word…and make them all lose their meaning. that would be a good balence, and future generations wont know racism.

im not saying racism doesnt exist, but it has certainly dwindled as each new generation is born. promote equality among your kids, not segregation in any form.

  19. 119

I think that if I used all the things that I grew up hearing in private the way that black people use the n word, I'd be viewed as ignorant and hateful.

racism is becoming more and more a defacto problem, and there definitely needs to be discussion about these kinds of things, but I think both sides should actually listen to each other instead of just trying to talk over each other like they do on this show

Well… honky has some pretty negative implications; should it just be our word or something?

  23. Lynz says – reply to this

    123

I am white and I believe everyone is racist to some degree. White people against black and vice versa. To say that you have no idea what it feels to be a black person is stupid. I didn't choose to be white, it is what it is and you deal with it. If I had my choice, I would love to be brazilian or something else but there is nothing you or I can do about what we are. I get so tired of black people using the "n" word but a white person does and it's offensive. Give me a break. If a black person calls me white trash or a white person calls me white trash, nobody says anything but if a black person calls themself a "n" and a white person calls them a "n" that is different. It shouldn't be, words are words and if a black person calls themself a "n" then they shouldn't mind a white person calling themself a "n." It's riduculous. If you feel like you live in a different world than maybe you should live somewhere else. It's your feelings and nobody is telling you what to do with them but you are in the land of the free and most blacks would you trade you places in a second!

Elizabeth is a complete idiot. She is so self-righteous and prissy- let someone else speak for a change! Intelligent people take others' opinions into ocnsideration and all I see is her running her skinny little mouth off. I don't neccesarily agree with Whoopi or Sherri, but they sure as hell can relate to the whole issue a lot more than Elizabeth.
Don't act like you know everything you dumb bitch!

  35. Go W says – reply to this

    135

Go Whoopi! She is right. The world - especially the USofA - still has massive racial divides. I was glad that it may have finally dawned on EH that everyone didn't grow up like her or have the same privileges as her.

Elisabeth just infuriates me. Her seeming insensitivity to those less fortunate, I've always found astounding. All she seems to care about are her taxes - and she's simply blindly republican.

If we don't fess up to the fact that there is a problem, then the same inequities will continue to grow.

  36. Todd says – reply to this

    136

OK, first of all, if your are not black your DO NOT get to tell black people how they should feel or how they should use that word. That word coming from a white persons mouth has centuries of hate and violence behind it. So just don't say it, alright? Seriously, why the fuck do you need to? Oh and to all of the fucking idiots who complain about "reverse racism", FUCK OFF. The "racism" that you have experienced is about 1/10000 of what a person of color has dealt with so no, you do NOT know what they have been through. Also, don't accuse minorities of having a victims mentality then go bring up reverse racism. Whoopi and Sherri have every right to use that word how they want, and Elisabeth just needs to get the fuck over it. She cant say it, its not a big deal or hard to explain to children, MOVE THE FUCK ON.

As much as I hate Elizabeth, she's right. DOUBLE STANDARD. Blacks want to keep the word so they can use it, but don't DARE a white person use it.

  40. Linz says – reply to this

    140

This is such a double standard!! It's reverse racism! Black people (or any other race for that matter) should not call themselves a certain word (ex. the 'n' word) unless they have no problem with everyone calling them them!

  41. joce says – reply to this

    141

Go Whoopi! No not everyone can use that word. Just like how fag hags like myself can say FAG and not mean offense with it. There a certain words certain people can't use and thats just how it is. It only brings up negative connotations if its used by the wrong people, with the wrong inflection and in the wrong context.

Elizabeth is a prude and cant understand anything besides HER OWN VIEW. never mind listening to the two black women on the show who are trying to respectfully explain how things are for two VERY DIFFERENT cultures.

White people sat around saying this word giving others the permission to use it freely and with hatred, and now white people are trying to have that same power by saying NO ONE CAN SAY IT NOW. They dont like it because it shows just how shallow and horrid their entire race was at one time. You guys should be reminded because that was 250 years of history. We can't just forget about it. Its STILL going on today! White trees, lynching threats, church bombings etc STILL exist today.

The white culture needs to stop fighting for control and let other people decide for themselves what words are acceptable.

I feel bad for Elizabeth they are always so mean to her. She is a very strong person thou. She has a point why should everyone not bury that word, why is it still being used? I will never refer to my ancestors as WETBacks to me that is sad!

  44. love2 says – reply to this

    144

I understand what Whoopi and Sherri are saying. They get to own the word because of their past. Ok, I get that. I know black history in America has a horrendous past. I KNOW.

But I also understand what Elizabeth is saying. And I never defend that little twit. I understand why she's frustrated and driven to tears. We're trying to move FORWARD as a country and people continue to use a word that has represented so much hate and violence. Even if they've "taken it back" and use it as a term of endearment. It still causes confusion for the rest of those who aren't black. It's going to continue to divide the races because of the old history and the NEW history of that word. Let's just stop using it once and for all. Either we can all use it or not at all.

  45. CnSF says – reply to this

    145

In my personal opinion I think black and latinos need to stop blaming white folks for everything wrong in their lives. Yes, your peoples past sucked hardcore, but now you have the opportunity to have a better life for yourself and your children. All you gotta do is actually apply yourself. Raise your kids the right way, with respect for others, and themselves. Oh and don't give me that crap about its hard to raise kids when two parents are working because we were poor as hell, and both my parents worked their asses off, and I was raised pretty damn good.

Stop bitching about your life, and start doing something with it.

She has NO common sense about anything. Not just this subject. It was because of her that Rosie is no longer on the show. If they think the show is better with EH they are very WRONG

  47. Carr says – reply to this

    147

I am an American of light skin and I agree with Elizabeth on this issue. This country will never get past prejudices so long as minority groups insist on isolating themselves and holding on to things like the "n" word. It does not unite us, but only serves to keep us separate. That is reverse racism and completely hypocritical.

  48. KELLY says – reply to this

    148

ELIZABETH IS RIGHT.. HOW CAN BLACK PEOPLE AS A WHOLE MOVE FORWARD, HELL THIS COUNTRY MOVE FORWARD OUT OF THE RACIST WAYS OF THE PAST, WHEN THE BLACK CULTURE KEEPS THOSE HATEFUL WORDS CIRCULATING IN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE? WHY WOULD YOU DEGRADE YOUR OWN SELF LIKE THAT KNOWING WHAT IT WAS USED FOR? IT'S NOT A TERM OF ENDEARMENT, A TERM OF ENDEARMENT IS "BABY" "HONEY" NOT THAT WORD! FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, IF THE BLACK COMMUNITY EMBRACES THAT WORD LIKE CANDY, THEN DON'T BE MAD WHEN IT IS SLUNG AROUND BY OTHER GROUPS FOR RACIAL PURPOSES. LET'S ERADICATE IT, AND MOVE ON! IT'S LIKE THE DAMN PLAGUE.

Why is in that on the View they always pick a young stupid blonde to bitch slap around while encouraging her to speak her mind so they can bitch slap said young stupid blonde on the air? Being the low gal on the View totem pole is most unenviable. Too bad the Elizabeth is too arrogant, ignorant and plain stupid to understand this so, in the end, she is her own worst enemy (all the while thinking she has something groundbreaking or controversial to say). Elizabeth, you should go away permanently, you are not qualified to speak your mind at all because you simply have no graps of really any issue. And Whoopi, you rock, but I cannot believe you are doing this show.

  53. Heath says – reply to this

    153

Using the "N" word in ANY way gives it power. There is far too much hatred intrinsically linked to the word to claim that if black people use it, it's "different" or "okay". Using the word keeps it in the psyche of the human consciousness, and calls up, consciously or not, all of the hatred and negativity bound to it.

I'm not normally one to post a link some place like this, but if anyone is interested in hearing a well-thought-out argument by a South African man against the use of the "N" word, check out this vid: you tube . com/watch?v=m3SuBBi-AZE

I'm sorry but in this aspect I have to agree with Elizabeth. You can't make 2 negatives into a right. For instancet the word "spic" has been around for a long time. There is no way to make that a positive word so why would I change it and then use it to change the meaning behind it so that it is now acceptable to hispanics. Even if the word became acceptable to hispanics, why would I use it when regardless of the meaning change, it still is degrading your culture. I'm hispanic and proud so there is no way the word "spic" should ever be changed up and re-invented to make it more acceptable bcuz it is not acceptable when the root of it was to disrespect hispanic ppl in the first place.

  57. shesh says – reply to this

it's not reverse racism. it's just a matter of fact that if i'm asian i can say chink, or if i'm black, i can say n*****, etc. it's empowering to be able to make light of racist words in some contexts and whoopi and sherri were just trying to explain that to ignorant elizabitch.

    162

Team Elizabeth. Whoopi has the African Queen Complex. You can't have it both ways. If black people would stop alienating themselves and acting entitled then white people just might start to respect them. Listen up blacks: Go to school, go to college, learn how to speak proper english (i'm not saying you have to give up ebonics), stop selling drugs and beating your ho's, use birth control, stop murdering people and robbing convenience stores, and get a real job. This is what it takes to be taken seriously, not the color of your skin. You need to understand that I have never owned a slave, and neither have my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, so don't complain to me about it. Did you know that some blacks were slave owners???!

Im sick of hearing muslims calling each other the "P" word or homosexuals calling each other (the other) "F" word, if you want people to stop using these words you need to take them out of circulation!!!

    Re: Ronni

As a "brown" person I can say this. If you look at all the races that have been discriminated against in the past (jews, hispanics, and blacks) which one group continues to perpetuate the "inferior" viewpoint? which group makes videos about pimping and hoing their people? which one group continues to promote promiscuity in their videos when they have the largest concentration of HIV/AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, unfathered children. Which group glamorizes "gangsta" life and accounts for the largest % of the jailed population.

Blacks are where they are because they continue to keep themselves there. Hispanics and jews don't focus on the negative they focus on the positive. Earlier this year when the lean like a cholo song and video spoof was making the rounds, hispanics were speaking out against it.

If you want to be respected, you have to first respect yourself. Blacks do not respect themselves.

I'm a white female. i did not choose this. i was born a white female. how is it okay for someone to tell me that because i was born a certain color, i am restricted from using certain words? I hate the word cunt, but would never tell a man "you cannot use the word, but i can". equality means treating everyone the same. it's not about what race, or gender uses a term, its the context in which they use it. PERIOD. so telling white people they aren't allowed to use the term is assuming they will use it in a deragatory way. assuming they will be rascist. well, i'm not rascist and i don't appreciate being told i'm not allowed to use a word based on my race because it is assumed that i will be deragatory with that term.

  71. wigga says – reply to this

    171

    @Ronni -
You are ignorant by assuming that all non-blacks and non-latinos will not understand. I don't have to have gone to mentally-handicapped to know that being mentally-handicapped is a disadvantage; I don't need to have done drugs and gone to rehab to know that drugs aren't good for you. Point is Elizabeth is trying to understand and she's not saying that she knows exactly what it is - she is just pointing out the hypocrisy in the statements whoopi is making.

How is this not hypocritical: I, a black person, am trying to eliminate racism from this country. But I, being a black person, forbid you to use a word because you are white.

  72. Mel says – reply to this

    172

Team Elisabeth Again - It shocks me every single time I find myself on her side of a topic. I will now and forever think of Whoppie and Shari as the N Word cause that is what they wish to address themselves as. Way to move forward ladies!

  73. marty says – reply to this

    173

Its another form of segregation. The n word is a horrible word that shouldnt be used. If black people have turned it into a form of endearment, should white people be allowed to use it?

I generally disagree with everything Elisabeth says, but i get her point here. How do you explain to a child that her black friends can call each other by the n word, but she cant because its bad.

If its bad then why can they use it.

Cos its good when they use it, but bad when we use it.

    But why..?

Errrrrrrrr just cos it is ok!!!

  74. Jenn says – reply to this

    174

I just want to say as a black femail that I agree 100% with Elizabeth. I don't care who is using or why they claim to be using it if it's not for the purpose of teaching what the word really means and how vile, nasty, and uspetting it is then it should not come out of anybodies mouth most certainly not a a black person. People who put out music and lyrics with it in it every time I hear them use the word I lose respect. I just don't understand why anybody would want to continue circulating that word maybe rappers and apparently Whoopi and SHerry have put a new meaning with it but to me it stills means what it meant back then when it meant terrrible degrading things and when I hear someone say it I feel hurt and I feel lots of pain.

Elizabeth is great! Her side makes total sense, sherri is an idiot! whats this crap about terms of endearment? that is the biggest load of crap I think I have ever heard in my life. Hate breeds hate, if you keep using the word and throwing it around it will never go away, or the pain with it. Black people dont get a special privelage, I dont call my family crackers?

first off, this is totally reverse racism….i don't buy the crap whoopi said of "making it their own"…..i wouldn't want to make "spic" my own…i believe society should consider the "N" word (he who shall not be named bullshit) taboo and a disgrace in general to use it…and to whoever made the comment "Simply by being white means that you will NEVER EXPERIENCE IT!!", referring to racism….puh-leeze!!!! i can't tell you how many times i've been racially profiled, outcasted, and simply put down for being the "white" girl ( and guess what? i'm boriqua who happens to look white to the bone) living in the "black" neighborhood….so don't assume BITCH that white (or white looking people) people don't experience racism….u people baffle me!

I agree with Elizabeth. It's just a hateful word. If it's said by one person, regardless of their color, and may offend another. It shouldn't be said by ANYONE.

Why do white people get so upset about using the n-word? Why do they feel so deprived? Honestly, I hear women call themselves "bitches" and I've heard other ethnic groups/races use the derogatory words for themselves that were created to bring them down. I can't explain it. It just happens. I've even heard white people refer to themselves and their families as poor white trash, but I would never say that about a white person. That is their right to do so. I think this is a silly argument and that the while people who are angriest are not used to having some of their freedoms curtailed as do the people who use these words.

I think the point that should have been made was lost. Jesse jackson is a black reverend that wanted BLACK people to stop using the word because there is no reason for it to be in anyones vocabulary! What black person sits around and says the N word, and then reflects on their past in a positive way? That word is a negative word and it is not something that anyone should say, period. Senator Obama being called that by Rev Jackson was not used as a way of "empowerment" nor was it used to reflect on heritage. It was used in a negative way regarding senator Obama! He could have called him what he is, a MAN/PERSON/HUMAN/AMERICAN… Why use that word? That is what I don't understand. Racism is not still being built by white people, it is being built by IGNORANT black people that aren't focused on seeing the future and realizing that they are not still in 1960 America. They are in 2008 America and there are no limitations on what they can do!

FOr the first time ever I AGREE with Elizabeth….If you forbid other people to use a word then you shouldnt be using it yourself….and it doesnt have different meanings to different people…it is always derogatory…say homeboy instead whoopi you trash bag I thought you were better than that…From an angry black lady…..

Different worlds Whoppi, A BLACK MAN will be our next president. This is 2008, your mom could not vote, but no mom could at one time. Time moves on and things change, Thankfully.
PS-Elizabeth really likes the sound of her own voice. Perez, I love You! I'm proud of your weight loss. You look great. Can we stop with the blue hair because you look so cute with the blond.

    186

For God sake we are more than likely going to have a black president! So why sit around and think about how horrible things were? Think about how much RACISM has been stomped down by us as Americans. I can absolutely say that when I hear anyone use the N word it makes me so angry because that is one of the most ignorant words in our vocabulary. So when we say that we are using it because we now have the power over that word, it makes me sick. Why in the hell would anyone want the power over a word that brought us down as people for so many years? Let the word die, and look to the future for positivity not to the past for negativity.

  87. 187

I think its really powerful that the N word has been transformed into a word only black people can use. I think its powerful because black culture gets ripped off all the time and this is something that other cultures can't rip off. I wish women could do the same thing with the word bitch. If they want to throw the N word back and forth they have every right in the world to do it. And as far as Jesse Jackson using it, if he was talking about Obama I think its just jealousy. I'm not a fan of Jesse Jackson but if he wants to use the N word let him do it. He's still totally irrelevant. What does he even do now?

I think Whoopi can be so annoying sometime. I think neither white or black people should use the N word. Since Whoopi and SHeri said it is such a bad word they shouldn't use it either because it is not right and brings back bad feelings. How does she want to be equal or treated equal if it is okay for one race to say something and another one isnt. Whoopi should realize it doesn't make sense. Elisabeth was actually right for one of the first times and I really felt for her. Whoopi thinks she is always right, but obviously not. Equality has to be started by every single person and using that word should be okay, neither a black or white person

Arguments make me cry too when I want to get my point across but it seems like no one gets it. So I feel her frustration here. I totally get her point of view, especially as she is trying to see this argument thru the eyes of a child. They are the future after all, yet the contradictions with this N word keep attitudes stuck in the past.

Colin powell did, condi did, Barrack did ! stop looking for excuses and make something off youself,be an example….there are NO excuses…hey if you wanna sit around and call each other the N word, fine, just stop blaming others for your failure…self accountability….jees look at the korean pop, latino pop. they came here and put their all into their work and have been successful…the minority of african americans that sit and complain has got to get a grip or be quiet, even barrack thinks so, that is what jeese jackson was refering to when he stabbed obama in the back…the world is yours,no regrets..

It's such bull shit! The word should NEVER be used, black, white, yellow or purple- Its a derogatory word, and it should not be used period. Whoopi is talking shit, she has no idea what it is like to deal with racism just because her grandmother did. BIG Deal my grandmother was in a concentration camp, do I know what that is like- ABSOLUTELY NOT! Do I hate germans because of it- absolutely not!!! Grow up Whoopi-get educated about where you live and how to change racism. It's so pathetic and OLD. Stop crying a river and move on in your society!!!
Look at Bill Cosbie and his Co-workers from his sitcom- ALL HIGHLY EDUCATED INTELLIGENT AFRICAN AMERICANS, who refuse to say the "N" word. Teaching your children to say this in your own home, only perpetuates racism.

GET EDUCATED. Your are so disgusting.

We are trying to move away from racism, yet the people who are fight for it are the ones who are making the gap so large. You cannot say to one society that its okay to use one word because of origin and for another to not. That is like allowing white people to have special privallages, it would seem racist to other cultures. I never agree with Elizabeth, but I am on her side. What is this about living in different worlds? My grandmother lost her first 3 children in a concetration camp for her beliefs and barely got away with her own life. Only by the gift of God, found my GRandfather and escaped to the U.S.
This was all for another form of racism. Our past is the reason why were are where we are today. It not a reminder of how far we come, not a gap or a reason to segrigate ourselves for current societies. To truly be unified, we need to think as one. Do as what we expect of our neighbor. Stop this, well you don't understand what it likes to be ME mentality. I grew up never seeing color, I just thought people were just tanner. My mother is Greek and my father is German. One obviously darker than the other. It was with my parents teaching that I was raised this way. People, it is about now. It is about teaching our children correctly to ensure a better tomorrow. Let us put or own selfish reason behind and see the true ignorance in ourselves. We are the map to teaching our children about a better future. We all are living history.
