I agree 100% with Elizabetha. I'm an afro american female and it absolutely IRKS me to hear the word nigga said to my family or hear them say it. Why the hell do we use it when it was orginally started with a negative connotation to black american SLaves??? WHY do we persistantly take a moment to call ourselves such a degrading name?? I think its shit and double sided!

You finish your comment with move on…right back at you…you mention how much your race is gone through…it was horrible, I don't take away any of the pain it caused but heal and move on yourself!!!

Re: GeeNe – It perpetuates hate because you use it toward each other and the "only" meaning white people know of the word is the derogatory meaning because we don't "understand" the term of endearment that black people use. You're right, I'll never understand what it's like to be of a race that makes up it's own stereotypes just so I can be the underdog and have such an amazing story to tell. Maybe, just maybe, that story will be sooooo triumphant because you fought so hard to get out of the stereotypes that you made for yourself, that one day it will be made into a big hollywood movie that a bunch of white people will go see and you'll get all the roayalties from…so NOW who's the underdog? Those middle class white people giving you that money so you can still fight the good fight from your fucking rabbit skin-baby seal eye filled desk chair. Must be tough to have all the NAACP oganizations to help you get to a higher step in your tough life.

Now you're going to say I'm racist, but you're the one that questioned why it perpetuates hate, and now you have an example.

i hate to break this to all minorities who "suffer by the hands of white people" everyday, but elizabeth is 100% right. Fuck the white guilt bullshit, its so tiring. EVERYONE of EVERY COLOR in this country has had hardships. Sorry but black ppl, get over yourselves, i'm tired of feeling bad for shit that had NOTHING to do with me. You can say cracker all you want but if I use the n-word i'm an asshole? ok, yea, that sounds fair.

As a black woman I agree with Whoppi on this subject. it is a word that was used to put down blacks as a race and we have made it something that we can use in a positive light so no whites can't say it. My husband is white and he never says it and he understands why. in this country they used to breed blacks to make stronger slaves and that is CRAZY!!!! so NO if you are not a minority then you have no idea how it feels to be in a society that is judging you by the color of your skin. I think that whites are just upset that the word was taken from them and they can't use it anymore its just like the term Bitch it was meant to degrade women but women have taken that word and made it a positive!! BUT only people that are close to you can say that to you in a endearing way ….no one has a heated discussion about that so why have one about the N word

I NEVER agree with Elizabeth. EVER! But this time I do. I just don't think it's right to go around casually using that word when it's attached to so many negative connotations. We SHOULD move forward. We ARE a different world than we were years ago when black people were slaves. Those people that had slaves are probably all dead now. And they were wrong to have slaves. It was wrong. But we need to move forward. You can't say black people can use that word and white people can't. That's just weird. It makes Whoopi and Sherri look totally ignorant. Also, why is there Black History Month and Ebony magazine etc. If we had White history month and Ivory magazine then we'd be racist. So how is it different? Just wondering….I love all people. Color, religion, race, doesn't matter. This country needs to move forward as ONE.

My grandmother was a child in Germany in the First World War and actually was imprisoned in a camp style dentention where she had to beg for eggs from soldiers through the fence to eat….a child, but she came to this country, learned English and made a life for herself. She told me once that her experience taught her lessons but she lived toward the future….thats the only way we can evolve into a better society which I think we all want.

When black people use that "term of endearment" towards each other, it just shows that they don't give a damn if it gets said or not, they just want a reason to jump on white people.

I doubt any self respecting black person walks up to his or her buddies and greets them with a "wassap nigga!"

Terms of words have changed repeatedly over the course of history and its not that difficult of a subject to be sensitive to given how recently the nature of the word has been used and is still used in a derogitory way.

I am sick of Elizabeth. I think there are smarter more educated people that should be on the show. They just have her on to spice it up and make ignorant people feel comfortable watching the show.

Although I love Whoopi and Elizabeth annoys me, I must say that I agree with Elizabeth on this issue. Racism is a terrible thing, and sadly, the afro-americans have had a history full of racism including name-calling such as the N-word, however, if we ever want to close the gap between the two cultures, words such as the N-word, shouldn't be said by either White people or afro-americans, I'm sure it has a different meaning when they say that word to each other, but it's not helping to say: You can use that word but someone else can't, that's not closing the culture gap, that's widening it!

THATS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! the MINORITY, just BECUASE they are the minority. EVERYTHING these days is about other CULTURES….blacks and hispanics can have BLACK HISTORY MONTH….
but if white people did that you all know DAMN WELL the white people would be criticized for racism.
black people love the racism card, they play it ALL TOO OFTEN.

Who do you think pushed for african Americans to get the right to vote if there was no blacks in congress yet–decent White people.
Do you think that blacks were the ONLY race that marched with Dr. King??–no.
THEY DID NOT FIGHT THE BATTLE ALONE…
    ———————————-
What you fail to realize is that MANY people fought against racial injustice and to instill equality to blacks in this country. To then take the "n-word" which was fought so hard by so many to abolish and "make fun of it amongst yourselves" is disgraceful and disrespectful to those who shared in the fight to giving you the rights you currently have.
It would be the same as if the Jewish community wore swastikas as "empowerment over Hitler". That disrespects every soldier that fought to save them in WWII.

Whoopi and Sherry may think that black people "took the N-word back" but if that's true…why do black folks get so pissed off when other races use the word against them? It seems to me that everyone else "owns" the word. That's why black people get so bent out of shape when it's used. Dumb cunts.

Elizabeth is absolutly RIGHT… The "N" word is not a term of endearment… I know blacks are speaking this to themselves, but it they can do it so can I! Girls who call themselves Whores, Sluts, etc. only make it more socially exeptable for EVERYONE to cann them that. So if Black can do it, so can WHITES, HISPANICS, Asians and whoever else. When the Black Community gets tired of hearing it, then they might be suprised to see the word DISSAPEAR!! but go figure they havent thought of that. They say that Blacks are soo discriminated against, I call BULLSHIT! they will throw color into any arguement just so they can win! HOW they hell can this country GROW with Ignorant Morons like that?! There are classy blacks just like there are whites and there are the Ni**ers like there is WHITE TRASH…. So STOP BITCHIN!!!

this is so rediculous that this topic is being made into such a big deal. in all honesty, the blond bitch is completely right. I've seen clips like this before of the view, and usually she is stupid and ignorant, but she couldn't be more correct here and no one was even letting her explain her point. This is a word that has gone pop culture and main stream and should never have gotten that way. For black people to say they are the only ones who can use it cuz they use it in a friendly term is absurd. I'm white, and when i listen to 50cent and he says nigga, am i just not supposed to sing it cuz i'm white? the n-word means nothing to me, just like kyke means nothing to me and i'm jewish. However i don't go around to all my jewish friends sayin "yo wattup kyke!" the bets way to get over a stupid word and to get over racism and all this bs is to fully give it no meaning by everyone of all colors and cultures not using and not reacting to it. once our generation, i'm 22, takes over and the baby boomers stop perpetuating these stupid arguments revolving around race, sexuality and religion things will be so much better…

Those ladies are so patronizing towards her as though she's a five year old contributing to the conversation. She's not an idiot and she knows what she believes, and it's a BS excuse to say because your mom could not vote you are not equal. You are not your mom Whoopi. In conclusion, maybe they should have listened to what she was saying instead of just talking over her.

No matter who uses it, that word came out of hate and there is no way to change that. I think it is an extremely offensive word and should never be used by anyone, white, black, what have you. It perpetuates hate and inequality that we are trying so hard to move past. With each generation it is a new start to bring about equality and with the word still being used we can never truly get to place where equality can begin.

Same as women calling one another bitch! Doesn't get any simpler than that.
If a man calls a woman a bitch, its meant to be offensive. But a woman can call her best friend a bitch (Hey sweety, you lost 15lbs…. look at you! Sexy Bitch), and its nothing.

you are a total fucking idiot. Most black people in this country don't know ANYONE that was a slave. And most white ppl in this country never had a family member that owned slaves. My families came from poland and italy, they never owned slaves and were pushed into small ghettos. They made it out and MOVED THE FUCK ON. I love how any pale skin person in america is a "white person", we get grouped together even though they came from ALL over the world. I dont get why black ppl feel the need to continue to separate themselves by color instead of dropping their bullshit rule "i can say this and you cant" and just start considering themselves as one with all the other ppl in this country, AMERICANS.

It is ironic that Elizabeth wont us the "N" word for black people because it hurts her so. But she will be the 1st person to call the "Black Canary" Barbie was a whore. Another derogatory term that is bad for women.

Black Canary is a classic superhero that has helped put woman into comics. She is the head of the Justice League. Without strong woman characters like her and Wonder Woman - who walks around in a Bathing suit (and there was 2 Barbies based on her) - women's rights might not be where they are now. Wonder Woman was featured on the cover of MS Magazine.

First, I would like to say that I grew up in a multi-racial home. If you want to talk about being at a disadvantage because you are black, think of what it would be like to be both. You never are truly accepted by either race. However, I find it to be much harder to fit in with the black community because they treat me as though I am not black enough. The use of the N-Word has never been accepted in my family or home. You simply cannot change the meaning of a word. Though the connotation of a word is subject to the person using, the N-Word is a word breed of ignorance and that will never change. I will never try to own that word, a word of ignorance. My black grandmother still trembles when she hears that word no matter whether it is said by a black person or a white. It is not a term of enderment. It is a term of hate, anger, and demeanment no matter how anyone tries to spin it.

i don't understand whoppi's comment about her mother not being able to vote……….uhmmmmmm that has nothing to do with the n word. Women got the vote AFTER black men. That was just another race card whoppi likes to throw. Elizabeth is just trying to make the point that the n-word will never be just FRIENDLY and funny. Its always going to evoke emotion no matter who says it. Its just a word that should stop being said altogether. And the blacks that use it are worse than the white people who say it. Its insulting your own people. It is hard being black or Hispanic these days, but they will always have the race card where they can blame their problems on their ethnicity. Last time i checked blacks dominate the sports world making hundreds of millions by chasing a ball down a court, and also get into college 10 times easier than any white person. HOW is that discriminating? They have equal opportunity in this country its all about how you approach your life. I have met and became close with many black and Hispanic people who have broken the stereotypical actions and have become beyond sucessful. Racism i feel will never end but we need to learn as a whole whites blacks browns whatever that we are all equal in this country we all struggle we all have obstacles we need to band together and stop calling eachother out.

Re: LS – Unfortunately I think you may be exactly the type of person that refuses to fight racism and make the step forward as one. The way you wrote your posts suggests you are uneducated (black stereotype) and I'm going to take a stab at this, but I'm guessing that you, yourself, have never been enslaved just as I, a white person, have never enslaved anyone. Why should I be sorry for things done before my time when my own family wasn't even established in the US at that time? Many different cultures have had rough pasts but if you continue to live in the past, you are only going to add to the problem.

  50. 550

Keeping it simple, judge by what is right and what is wrong. If saying the N-word is wrong because it is derived by negative feelings and ultimately was born as an arrogant way to classify someone regardless whether it comes out a black mouth or a white mouth justification of it is never going to be make it right. Jesse Jackson has already proven to be another hypocrite; he's already shown not to be trusted because he doesn’t have any respect for himself (Ask his wife!). But I hate when I see a fellow black person saying that it's ok for me to use it because it's a term of endearment. That's just about the most insane thing I've ever heard. Last time I checked, nobody ever likes to be called a name that demeans them, because I sure as hell don’t. This has been such a double sided issue and to me makes no sense why there is even a counter argument as to why only a certain people can use it and others can’t.
Like the old saying goes, if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all!

    557

I agree with Elizabeth but understand Whoopi. However, it is those people who cry about how hurtful that word is that use it to taunt. Why is it ok for a person to call me whitey, honkey, "The Man" and interpret everything I do or say into a racist situation but then turn around and say hatefut things about my race. Either way no one has that right. I agree, whoopi is saying her mother didn't have the right to vote BUT SHE DOES. We have acknolwledged the wrongdoing and are still fighting to fix alot but some people are too stuck on the past to move forward. I am not saying forget but MOVE ON! I personally never owned or hated anyone due to the color of their skin but I have been mugged and my friend was beaten by african americans in our own f'ing neighborhoods. Where was Jesse Jackson that freaking day? So if anyone has a right to want to say something mean should it be me or do I deserve it because of what my ancestors past did???? Or is it not right at all, "cause those few people don't make up the whole race." Well same goes for us. Not everyone in the causcasion culture feels they have done something to pay for to the african americans. I know I certainly have NOT! We owe each other respect and not try to justify how one can get away with something more because of a past none of us have any control over.

    558

I agree with both of them. I think elizabeth is right in that by keeping the word in the lexicon we perpetuate the distance between us. But I also think Whoopi is right in that so often white people make blanket statements about how black people should feel or act (take back the N word or not be upset when whites use it) without thinking about where black people are coming from or thinking about the history of things (as to why a black person would be offended when a white person said the word but not when a black person said it). I think they are both right and to tell the truth, I think its the smartest Elizabeth as ever actually sounded.

I don't get racism. I guess I never will, because I spend my life living in homogeneous societies with a few black people, who are met with curiosity because they stick out with their skin color and culture. It must be tough for them. Sometimes when I see Africans on the street or a supermarket, I twitch, because it's a primarily a visual shock. I don't think it makes me a racist, I'm just not used to black people. In case of many Croats, I think it just the unfamiliarity.

Amongst my friends, we can call each other "beaner" or "wet back" as a joke, as how Whoopi described it, a word of "empowerment". But if someone else called me that, I'm pretty sure I'd kick some ass! I do agree with Elizabeth in the fact that I think the N word is a very dirrty word, I don't ever use it, and it bothers me when I hear black people use it, but I understand that it is their word to use. Elizabeth is such a baby sometimes!

bullshit! you're feeling sorry for yourself! i'm a latino and i don't feel any social inequities upon me due to my race. this is a double standard that lazy people are trying to use! if you use the n-word i'm going to use it. if you have no respect for your race i have no respect for it. and don't give me that crap that your mother couldn't vote. your mother has the right but whoopi you don't have the right because you've been nothing but priveledged!

This is ridiculous. African Americans need to get the fuck over it and realize that times have changed and if they continue to classify themsleves as "diferent" then change will never occur. Elizabeth has a great point and tried her ass off. The African Americans just keep milking this racial boundary when it isn't so in 75% of the united states…Why is it ok for a black man/woman to call a white woman/man a "whitie"??? Stop your friggin whining and let's just be humans…how about that?…you can't accept change if you don't want the change and right now is the time…with all the remainders of the especially racial times dying off, and the more educated and understanding people moving in, it's time to shut the fuck up and give yourself the chance to accept change…get over it and just be.

that's why the US is soooooo fucked up!!!!!!!! Elizabeth is right…. blacks and whites live in the same society so give up this BS that we can use it and white can because of the pais grandmother Shaniqua went through…. Im freaking African, and white and black Africans in my country have been over it a long time ago!!!! Black ppl in the US have to freaking move on!!!!!!!! Colonialism and Slavery for u guys has thankfully been over… many black ppl in the US keep living up to their stereotypes, contantly worry abt the past, and dont realize this might be the reason why ur soo stagnated in this society…… dont blame it on the other "white folks" for the the "differences u see", blame it on urself, because the black ppl who r doing something better of their lives in this society r getting places!!!!!! To me, black ppl r only in a different social level because they act differently, so cut the shit and start behaving like civilized ppl!!!!!!
This n-word should not be used, period!!!!!!!!!!!! if u suddenly get offended when ur bestfriend who's white uses as a term of endearment to u just because he's white, u r being racist, and racism is a crime!!!!!!

THEY are the ones separating themselves and making "their own" culture. it's reverse racism and it's bullshit.

I hate the word cunt, but would never tell a man "you cannot use the word, but i can". equality means treating everyone the same. it's not about what race, or gender uses a term, its the context in which they use it. PERIOD. so telling white people they aren't allowed to use the term is assuming they will use it in a deragatory way. assuming they will be rascist. well, i'm not rascist and i don't appreciate being told i'm not allowed to use a word based on my race because it is assumed that i will be deragatory with that term.

—-well said!! ive been trying to put it into words for so long, as a white woman myself, and they always escaped me. thank u for doing it so well.

I watched this morning… which I rarely do since Rosie left… and honestly, Elizabeth is HORRIBLE HORRIBLE person to have on the View. Again she spoke too much about a topic she knows little, she went shrill, she cut off everyone, including Barbara. And the worst part is SHE cried… yes SHE cried. Shocking. This is the reason why the View sucks… her point of view is not a relevant one to the dialog.. no… not all viewpoints NEED to expressed… everyone has an opinion but national tv should show educated people with informed ideas… not ex reality stars. What surprises is that Whoopie continues to stay on the show when clearly none of the producers respect her views. As long as Bill Gedde, the ultimate conservative prick, runs the show, there will always be Elizabeth… this is NOT fox news; unfortunately he LOVES her conservative crap. I miss Rosie and Lisa Ling.

IT IS DISRESPECTFUL AND DEMEANING TO ANYONE WHO EVER FOUGHT TO ABOLISH SLAVERY OR WORK FOR RACIAL EQUALITY!
IT IS NEVER OKAY TO SAY BY ANYONE!!
You can not take the word back….. it exists and will NEVER be forgotten! This ludicrous idea is comparative to Jewish people saying "Heil Hitler" or "Sieg Heil" to one another as a term of endearment to one another in order take it back. They don't, because it's painful and WE WILL NEVER FORGET!! So, no reason to perpetually spew pain. MOVE FORWARD!!
There is ONE world Whoopi, not TWO, if you keep thinking like that you will never grow. As far as Elizabeth, I agree with her on this topic and it was okay for her to feel so strongly about this topic to loose control of her emotions. It shows passion!

Maybe it's because I'm Canadian… but the only time I've ever heard the "n-word" used in real life is as a term of endearment used by people of all backgrounds. It's how a guy addresses, or would refer, to a good close male friend. I think it's becoming more and more popularly used because it's a way guys can show affection without sounding feminine. It's evolved into a compliment and term of affection.

Jesse Blackson and Al Sharpton are idiots. The stuff that they used to thrive on ("oh us poor black people") is now being turned around by Obama and he is trying to make this crap about the poor black people go away, which means Blackson and Sharpton now have nothing to complain and go on tv about. Also, what a hypocrite. When Kramer went crazy and used the N word, Jackson said we should boycott seinfeld. Now he can use it????!!! Such a fucking joke. These guys need to get the F out of the public arena. And whoopi just looks likr a pawn in their stupid game. What a joke these people are. They need to get their heads out of their asses and stop using "terms of endearment" to refer to each other.

Let me school some of you folks on the use of the "N" word. There is a huge difference when blacks use the term to each other and when whites do. Blacks have been turning sugar from shit from the beginning of America. They have taking a term that is the most derogitory term ever and turned it into a term of endearment making the term actually seem less harsh. When whites use this term it is to hold blacks down and to make them feel unworthy. Same goes for the people who think "white power" and "Black Power" stand for the same thing. It can't be further from the truth while the term White Power stands for holding every other race below them. The term "Black Power" stands for EQUALITY. Man most of you need to get some friends with a little more diversity!!!

I see it as a double standard. Whoopi says it's a term of endearment, but then way do I hear it in rap songs in such a harsh and demoralizing manner? I'm not saying white people should be able to use the word, I'm advocating the word not be used at all, but to me, the word means something entirely different than what black people now say it means, and it's offensive when I hear them say it and then say, "It's okay for me to use it, but you can't" because they know the term is still negative for us… but somehow it's okay for them? I don't go around calling my friends "crackers," so I don't see why black people can't find a new word to coin themselves.

That's called racism. Either the word should be used or shouldn't, but you can't say one is permitted based on the color of their skin because that is segregation.

Whoopi automatically thinks she is wiser, simply because she is older. Why doesn't she ask Mr. Obama what he thinks of the word, and if its used as a term of endearment in his home. African Americans are the only culture that denigrates itself by using words that are destructive to the soul and to the future of their youth. Yes, your ancestors were slaves; causing a pain that will endure for many years. Don't allow your future generation to enslave themselves with remnants of the darkest moments of that time. The N word self destroys, self humiliates, and prevents healing. Gaining respect starts with self value and self respect. And yes, we do live in the same world. We may have had different struggles, but we were all created by the same God.
