As a white person, when I hear a black person say that word it makes me FEEL racist heres why: I have NEVER heard an educated black person say that word so when I hear it I think "black trash" I have been around many different races, don't consider myself racist and I hate how hearing it makes me think certain things, so for me getting rid of the word all together is the only way.

  3. 703

CAN WE ALL AGREE THE DUNNY HAS TO GO !!!???
HOW MANY MORE IDIOT THINGS HAVE TO COME OUT OF HER MOUTH BEFORE PEOPLE START TO REALIZE THAT SHE IS A MORAN?

*One last time–You are still NOT Understanding why using the word is wrong..
    =========================
    1. **Anyone who calls anyone of ANY race names—is a Racist…
Calling a African American the "N-word" or calling whites "whitey" or "white trash" (that includes you Perez) are ALL racist and propetuating hate-filled speech.
This includes "Rev." Jesse Jackson, "Rev" Jeremiah Wright, and Michelle Obama… AND NOW WHOOPI GOLDBERG. They are ALL HYPOCRITES!!! (and they support B. Hussein Obama–the candidate for "unity"–whatever)
    2. This belief that its "OK" for blacks to call other blacks the "N-word" is ridiculous. It is NEVER o.k. in any context to use an obscene word that is rooted in the very prejudiced history that they demand reparations for.
    3. African Americans need to realize that–yes, your race was discriminated against and treated horribly at one point in history, but no worse than the American Indian or the Jews have been treated (in fact they were the LEAST violated out of the three). It is grossly unfortunate that our history is darkened with such hate–yet, to not rise above that is wrong.
    4. My father's family is Jewish and had holocaust victims—I have NEVER heard a Jew call another Jew "What's up my k*ke"…. At least that race knows what to do with hate speech of the past–bury the evil and never let it pass your lips which would demean anyone who ever fought for that mindset to be abolished.

i understand what she's saying - how have we moved past the hate behind that word if STILL it evokes a negative response when coming out of a particular person's mouth? White, Black, Purple - whatever. If it is offensive from the tongue of one, it should not be used at all. period.

"Have you ever heard of the Constitution of the United States? The First Amendment is FREDOM OF SPEECH."

Yeah, didn't they write that during slavery? And you forgot to mention it classified Bllacks as 3/5ths of a person. And at the same time of writing it Blacks were being lynched for speaking out. Learn some history before getting all zealous! NEXT……..

Whoopi Goldberg needs to shut the fuck up. She has no idea what shes talking about…. Hasselback makes good points. How the fuck do the African Americans expect to 'change' the world and make them 'equal' (because apparently the 'aren't') when they DO keep saying "nigga this, nigga that"? Bringing back terms of the past keep the past in the present…… Anyways…. whoopi needs to hang herself with her H&M scarf… so over this…….

    Hasselback all the say!

  9. WTF says – reply to this

    709

Re: Ralph – how can you expect other people not to use it when you are using it? I didn't grow up in the time of slavery so I don't know what the word was origianally used for because I'm used to hearing it in songs that I listen to, on TV shows and movies that I watch as a term of endearment and something completely different. So when I use it to address my brother (white) it's a term of endearment, but when I say it to a black friend and mean it as a term of endearment, then all of a sudden I get an earful about how ignorant I am and why I shouldn't use it. If I'm not mistaken, that time period is over and done with, and times are different now…it's just a matter of blacks wanting to move on and ACTING for change instead of just pretending while still maintaining the "underdog" mentality. yeah, I know, African americans have come a long way in this country to get even this far and EVERYONE love RIGHTS so don't go making a stupid statement like that. Yes, white people have some work to do, but so do black people…so do Hispanics…so do Asians (I'm 1/2 Japanese so I know a little about discrimination myself..WWII interment camps?). You can blame this shit all on white people not wanting to hear it, but maybe black people don't want to hear that other ethnicities are acting for change. All anyone really expects is that people be responsible for their actions and words.

    721

First of all–those who say white people dont understand racism have never gone to a public highschool in southern california. being that this state is almost half non-white, being picked on for my race has become very common. secondly, no one should condone the use of the "n" word. it is a racial slur used in a derogatory way to belittle people with black/dark skin. i dont care if you are black–this word was used as a way to make slaves feel ignorant and inferior and i am convinced that if you think this term can be used as a word of endearment that you are ignorant. its just a way to cling to a painful past and should not be tolerated.

  22. E says – reply to this

    722

No one of any race should be using the "N"word. You can't ask other races to respect you, when you don't respect your self. Blacks also us derogatory words against other races and you don't here them crying about it. you don't see hispanics going on national television crying about people calling them wetbacks. If you are going to downgrade yourself and use the "N" being black then you should not expect others around you not to use the word. Jesse Jackson should practice what he preaches.

EliSabeth (with an 's'!) is right; it's a disgusting word and no one should condone its usage. Using it in private, in public, in pop culture, whatever, hasn't taken its sting away….as is evidenced by the fact Sherri says white people can't use it.

If you don't know the significance of the term, what point are you arguing???? You realize this WHOLE discourse is white people telling black people what to say!! Can you at least realize that? You can find NO BETTER definition of the term!!!! PERIOD!

We live in seperate worlds many times due to black people creating a divide that isnt necessary and making it acceptable for the black community to use the word nigga but drawing the line and white people using it strengths this divide. I also think its ridiculas that we have to refer to this term as the " N" word even in a debate on its use. Nigga Nigga Nigga!

Jenny I totally agree w/ up and agree with Elisabeth too. The Jewish people I know (who in my town have been persecuted against in various ways) are the most forgiving, loving people. I studied the holocaust extensively and am amazed at the way they represent themselves for what they as a people went through. I NEVER hear them complain or ever talk to eachother using racial epithets.

    735

I have a huge prob with anyone using that word. I live in Baton Rouge, LA where our public schools are mostly black. One of my boss's sons, who is white, was used to hearing that word used at his elementary school by the black students. When at the store one day, he saw a black woman and loudly asked his mom if that woman was a n*****. That situation could have gotten very bad if the woman hadn't been so understanding. Sometimes it's too late to explain to childrent the meaning of "inappropriate" language. You don't know when they'll use it.

  36. 736

words only hurt when they are used with the intention to hurt.
i don't use the n-word cause i have no use for it.
i don't have have a problem with other people using it, although i think less of them when they use it because i don't think it's an intelligent word & i don't think there's any purpose for it. they don't NEED to use it.

    737

Wow, can't believe I'm siding with Elizabeth on something. Never thought that day would come… Anyway, I look at it the same way I look at the word "bitch." Is it ok for girls to call each other bitches but not guys? Does it have a different meaning? Are we "taking ownership" of the meaning, or just using it because we can? I still think they both have a negative connotation, regardless of who's saying it.

  38. Stay says – reply to this

    738

You white people make me sick. This is not reverse discrimination!!! What Black people do and say amongst one another is our business not yours. We don't go around calling you all "c&8ts", pwt….that's what you all do with each other.

Each racial group has things that they say and do which is particular to that group. Is just that white people think that they still own and control us. No b@#$h you can't call me the n-the word and as Shari told Barbara "you can't stop me from using it." Get out of our culture, get out of our music and leave us the hell alone.

There are so many people like Elizabeth (myself included) who are teaching our kids that people are just people and we should not be divisive. We don't say spic, nigga, chink - I don't even let my fiends say "let's order Chink food". Look at all the people who read Perez - gays, straights, latinos, blacks, asians…. We are all reading this page and we don't care Perez is gay. Sorry this is such a long comment but we have to change the world. OBAMA '08

I am so sick of people bashing Elisabeth and calling her names like "Elisabitch". She is CONSTANTLY interrupted, belittled, and demeaned by Joy. Joy has the most arrogant, self-righteous attitude. She, in her mind, is always right, and Elisabeth is always wrong. I have not once seen Elisabeth belittle another person or guest on that show. She always backs up what she says with fact and class, not jokes that some writer backstage wrote for her like Joy does.

  41. mb says – reply to this

    741

I have never agreed with Elizabitch before… until now. She brought up pop culture and no one would conversate about it. For media stars to use it and not educate isn't right. The world isn't perfect Whoop, we know. Rap and pop stars can't dish it out and then it's all of a sudden not right for someone else to say it. I would love to see rap stars educate the youth about the past but it's not going to happen. How can we advance as a conglomerate society when there is a dual standard about what is right and wrong? I don't go up to my gay friends and say 'hey homo' and expect them to realize that it's a term of endearment. I went to college with (and hold close friendships) with many African American students and had this same conversation in a diversity workshop. There isn't going to be a consensus or a magic solution that can be worked out overnight. To Elisabeth: thanks for speaking your mind even if your voice shakes. If you want the word to linger on continue to use it but it's been taken out of my dictionary. We all need to get off of our pulpits and act. Speaking without leading gets nothing accomplished.

  42. WTF says – reply to this

    742

Re: Ralph – In this day, you cannot honestly expect anyone to use the N word and truthfully mean it like it was used back in the day unless they're in the KKK and/or are serious white supremecists. So what is the definition for you, besides "term of endearment" because to me that's like saying I can call my mom, brother, and grandmother a Jap, Kamikazee, Chink, Goot..that sort of stuff. Being Japanese, I was taught that even though the US bombed the SHIT out of the motherland and held almost ALL Japanese-Americans in interment cams during WWII and treated them like SHIT and used terms like the ones above, that we shouldn't hold it against them and that we've all gotten over it, but the term has the same meaning even if I say it to someone in my family.

So you're telling me that after 200+ years, you're still not over it?

And who doesn't like to be the hero? What are we fighting about right now on this stupid page? To be the hero of the conversation and win the fight in who's right.

Yes…just because you stop talking about racism doesn't mean it's not out there…but holding on to the hatred of your fore fathers/mothers is what is making things worse. I commend Elizabeth for just wanting end that.

I think Sherri and Whoppi are being very ignorant about this issue! Don't give me that BS about "We're taking that word and owning it"! Oh please! They just don't want to admit that they're hypocrites too! I'm hispanic and I would never use 'spic' or 'wetback' as a term of endearment toward anyone! And about Whoppi saying that we have to accept that we live in different worlds….as long as people continue to think that and accept it and buy into it, it will be true. By saying that different cultures live in different worlds and that some cultures can do or say things that others can't, you are separating and isolating that culture from others. Therefore, you are creating the different worlds that you are speaking out against! I wish they would let the audience join in on these discussions cause these hosts are so ignorant!! You go Elizabeth!! But stop being a crybaby!! =)

Did you forget about MLK and other activist that fought and died for the progression of civil rights that we have today. A LOT has changed since the days of slavery. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. "
19th amendment says: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. "

    764

Of course black people have the right to re appropriate that word.

I am a gay man who often identifies as queer. Queer was used for many years as a term to ridicule gay people but now has been reclaimed by the gay rights movement. I am now the Queer Director for my university student union! This is a perfect example of positive re-appropriation of what was once a negative word.

This is similar to how many same-sex attracted women like to identify by the word dyke.

And let's be clear: it is the members of the historically discriminated group who get to decide how they and other people use a word in public. A white women of immense privilege should not announce what black people should do with the n word. Just like a straight man should never tell me I can't use the word queer to identify.

I agree with Elizabeth. if we want to give peace a chance and stop all this hate, why go and use a term that is so harsh, so vile, that it could potentially lead us back into the dark stage that we are trying so hard to break through now. I really don't watch the view so excuse me for not knowing this womans name, but the lady with the scrunchy black hair said something that really upset me. "I don't care if white people use that word." and then she also said "it's ok to use it in private but not in public." WHAT THE HELL IS THE DIFFERENCE?! whether it's been said inside or outside it doesn't matter, it's still a bad word!

I do not believe that the N word is being used as a term of endearment among blacks. In my opinion, I think deep down it is being used more to spite the whites; to humiliate them.
I am neither white nor black. I did not learn about racism and experience it until I migrated to the United States. I am aware and grateful that if it were not for the blacks who stood against inequality decades ago; as a minority, I just can't imagine how worse life in America would've been. Racism is not just between blacks and whites here in America though. Racism is between all races here in the U.S.A. It's disheartening. You know where I grew up we treated blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, etc. all the same; like a human being that they are. We referred to them all as Americans.

So for those who say whites shouldn't use the word because they came up with it to be used negatively… I say that the ONLY ones who should use it are the whites, I mean, we came up with it, right? So REALLY… you're stealing OUR word…

Elisabeth is completely and utterly correct on this issue. I am embarrassed for Sherri and Whoopi. Their arguments were completely bogus. Shame on them.

I dont get black peoples' knowledge on the word. It can't be OK for some to say, but not OK for others. If you want equality, then you can't say that certain people can do certain things and others cant. Thats just stupid.

I completely agree with Elizabeth. Speak the truth, girl. I think she is INCREDIBLY brave. Not to many white people would stand up to 2 black women about that word. Go girl!

I really agree with elizabeth on this one.

I work with a lot of black people and they say so many "take my black ass" "n****r this or that" and call me a 'typical white girl" They laugh at me bc "omg your so white"

I mean seriously?? I love how Whoopi and Sherry and a lot of people in these comments feel like white people don't experience racism?

RONNI left a comment saying about white people saying, "You have a systematic advantage bc you are white…and that's what RACISM IS! It's the systematic advantage due to race! Educate yourselves! You will never know what it feels like to be brown in this country!!!!!!!!!!! "

Well you don't know what it's like to be white in this country!!! Gosh, it goes both ways. Please..

Whoopie needs to watch her back……..Elizabeth is poison and when ever she tussles with someone on that show they get the boot. I hadn't watched it in months and did the other day. It was painful and I channel surfed, and not just on the commercials. They need to change that line up and fast. Sherri is annoying and a bit of an airhead and Elizabeth is a jumped up princess who thinks that she knows about struggle and life. No clue at all!

the only reason WHY we live in "separate" worlds STILL is because you guys think it's okay that your fellow niggars still throw around the word nigga… you're both stupid blacks with chips on ya'll shoulders.

Elizabeth is so sweet. It is obvious to me that she was over taken by emotion because she hates the N word, as I do. If you can't see how sincere she was then you are a moron.

Perez, you hate her because she is conservative. Should I hate you just because you are liberal?

    Hate is wrong. period.

Pah leez everyone, just relax and take a deep breath. All I was saying was that ONLY US blacks can call each other NIGGA'S. Is that so wrong? Cause when Whites call me NIGGA I feel bad! When another NIGGA calls me a NIGGA I feel good!

    783

Please, Whoopi. Black people don't want it to be equal. Then they couldn't cry racism and brainwash their children with the victim mentality. I'm sorry I'm white. But I've never owned slaves, and blacks of today have never been slaves. Get the fuck over it.

Hey Whoopie… if you think this country treats blacks so poorly why don't you round all of them up and go back to Africa… it's a MUCH better place there. I'm sure you'll be treated much better and the so-called "separate" worlds will come together for you. Fucktard. Ugly fucking UGLY fucktard.

As a black person EVEN **I** can not understand the justification of other blacks using this word towards each other yet whites can not. Its a complete hypocricy and the word should not be used period jokingly or not.

I can understand her crying in frustration. It's been many generations since slavery was a common practice. It's time to let go of the past, think positively and focus on the future and not keep bring up the past as an excuse for everything. No one's proud of America's past in this regard, but none of us were alive and there's nothing we can do about what happened in the past. Focusing on the future and not looking at the color of skin will bring us all together.

Sherri Shepherd has proved her stupidity even further more. Why is it acceptable for black people to use the n-word? I agree with Elizabeth, she doesn't go around saying pollock, so why should black people go around using the n-word. I actually think Whoopi Goldberg is smart but I really don't agree with her on this one. I'm an African American and I don't think ANYONE should use this word. Why would you want to use a word that was used to degrade your people and take it back?
