BA BA WA WA aka Barbara Walters is TERRIBLE! Will that woman just retire?!?! I am totally on Hasselbeck's side. It has nothing to do with race, it's an ugly word in private or public so why say it!? They need another person on that show besides Elizabeth who actually has brains! Except for Sherri…I do love her-but what's up with the hair today?! Helloooo fro!

How many pejorative words for black people and others are not used today? Many, because for whatever reason, they fell into disuse. Maybe they were stupid or offensive so people stopped using them.
It is the black community who keeps this "n" word alive. The rest of the world is ready to leave it behind like they did with the word "negro" when black became the politically correct way to identify people of African American origin.
When the black community is ready to stop using the "n" word, the rest of the world will follow. Most of the world outside the black community already has stopped using it.
Whoopi and Sherri are keeping it alive. Let it die. Peace out!

I cannot stand Elizabeth but she has a point. As a black person I cannot condone anyone using the N word. Black people using it to take the word back makes no damn sense. That word is hurtful and disrespectful and no one should say it especially no self-respecting educated black person. I am disappointed in Whoopi. Though I expect that from Sherrry.
I totally agree with Elizabeth, I just wish she was better at expressing herself. By saying only a certain group of people can say the N word, Whoopi is perpetuating racism. It may seem ignorant to act like inequalities do not exist in North America, but the first step to get rid of these inequalities is removing derogatory terms from our vocabulary altogether, whether or not they are used as terms of endearment. I honestly think that if black people stop using the N word, new generations of people, of all races, won't be aware of its existence. I somewhat understand the argument that using it in a positive manner among black people is a form of empowerment, but it just doesn't make any sense to say that only a certain group of people can use it. Of course, everyone should be educated about the slavery that took place in America, but only as a learning experience. Keeping words like the N word in our present vocabulary just allows racism to persist.
For once I agree with Hasselbeck. How the hell is using that hateful word empowering? It's like if I decided to refer to every woman I know as a cunt. Cunt is an historic derogatory misogynistic term applied to the second class citizens called women. Acknowledge history, yes, but perpetuate the harm and hurt of this word by teaching it to children?

First i would like to say that people who think that the world is equal and everyone is treated the same are naive. The civil rights movements was only about 40-50 years ago. that means that my parents and grandparents grew up in times totatly different from this.
Most white people today think that everything is all well and good but blacks are still dealing with the effects of that everyday.
Also if your white why do you wan to use the word anyway….? thats the real question. Blacks can use it although i dont like it or use because it was used against us for so many years by white people that today we can turn it around and take some of the pain out of the word.

Actually kate you are the one that is clearly ignorant and doesn't know your history because if you did you would know that southern blacks, whether male or female did not get to vote as whites were allowed to until 1965 when the voting rights amendment was passed. Did you perform a lobotomy when it came to the civil rights era when you took history and civics in high school cuz this is very basic stuff honey. It is extremely rare when I find myself in mutual agreement with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. This morning while watching “The View“ a very heated discussion regarding Jesse Jackson use of the “N” word between Whoopi, Sheri and Elisabeth took place, leaving an visible emotional Elisabeth in tears. I am an African-American and I have always interpreted the use of the “N” word as a racial epithet that is both controversial and offensive, as well as being a double standard, prohibiting other ethnicity groups from using the “N” word. I have never viewed the “N” word as a term of endearment. The leaders of the Civil Rights Movement did not give their lives to reverse the equality and justice for African-Americans in order to justify idiosyncrasy of using this word. There is a book entitled “n*gger” by Randall Kennedy which offers various explanations of the “N” word, nevertheless, hypocrisy in retrospect. Until all people of different ethnicity can use the “N” word without provocations, then African-Americans should refrain from using it.

I'm tired of people from all backgrounds using they're background to claim they have it tough. Asian people, black people, mexican people, italian people, white people, natives, spanish people, whoever. Yes racism does still exist but it exists between all cultures and yes, even white people have racism towards them. I've experienced it first hand.
The main issue is that when people use their race as a way to get sympathy or whatever, people end up resenting them. I used to be really tolerant of everyone. I loved everyone, I felt everyone should be equal. Now I don't. I'm sick of hearing "your giving me a speeding ticket just because I'm black" or "I'm native, you took my land from my ancestors so now I should get cheap cigarettes and booze and shouldn't have to pay taxes on anything". I never went over to Ireland and told them to give me free potatoes because my ancestors had to leave when the potato famine happened and I deserve them. You don't see Asians coming to America to take people back because they killed some in the Vietnam war.
I think that if people want to use derogatory words for their own culture then they should be prepared to accept the fact that racism will exist.
We all just need to learn to forgive and forget.

I was alluding to the Vagina Monologues where some women RECLAIM hurtful words used against them by saying them to show that others don't have power over them by using it. What Ms. Goldberg and whats-her-face were getting at was saying that black people are using the N word in a sense that they OWN it and it doesn't hurt them anymore. Go to school. There's something called ethnic studies and women's studies where you would understand what I'm talking about.

I'm going to try and simplify this for those who are making a simple thing complex.
I'm going to start with a question….why are white people fighting to use this word? It doesn't matter who else uses it. If you are not a racist as a white person you shouldn't use or want to use it. Period. If you have any class, culture, or black people you respect out of love you will not use a word that becomes painful who YOU say it.
Its not your business when, how, or how often black people use it. Just accept that you shouldn't use it. What Whoopie was trying to explain to Elizabeth was that YES within American culture there are several different subculture that really are worlds within themselves and each culture has it's own issues. The N-word is an unsettled issue within the black community. Black people have their own views and feelings about that word and the opinions will vary from black person to black person.
Back to the original point all white people need to know is stick to this simple rule. YOU CAN'T AND SHOULDN'T SAY IT….IF YOU SAY IT IN FRONT OF A BLACK PERSON YOU WILL MORE THAN LIKELY GET YOUR ASS KICKED AND YOU WILL DESERVE IT…BECAUSE WHEN YOU SAY PAIN IS FELT.

Slavery had its origins far before it came to Africa honey, get it right. The comment I am about to write is actually directed less towards an individual and more towards the masses that obviously didn't learn history (which I feel is the fault and sometimes a combination of the individual and the lackluster American school systems).
The word slave has had many differnt lives as a term and actually didn't come into its current form until the 10th century. Before that, the term "serf" among many others also descibed people of the lowest class that were not free. The current term slave comes from the word "slav" and refers to slavic people from central and eastern europe who were often enslaved/sold by the Vikings and under the Roman empire. Hello?! I know most people saw the movie Gladiator and if you know anything about history, you know that the Roman empire came centuries before the African slave trade.
Most of the time when I hear black people use that word, it is in a very derogatory manner, I have yet to hear that as a term of endearment!
Also, it should be noted that the form of slavery that was forced upon people before the transatlantic slave trade was a lot less harsh than the slavery we know from American history and in the Caribbean (if you do further research). In virtually all of these previous cultures, slavery was more like indentured servitude if you know anything about that. Many were able to either buy their freedom or work their way up from being a slave(as you could in Africa). This was not the case in America as we all know. It's just amazing to me how people number one try to act as if slavery was a new concept to Africa and number two act as if it was the same setup as it ended up being in America. Even slavery in America evolved to become as harsh as it became. No one had knew or understood the concept of slavery as it was in America or the Caribbean. So please people, know your history!!!!!!

How dare someone tell me that just because I am white, I will never understand the feelings of racial inequality. I am extremely well educated and have studied these matters very in depth. How are we supposed to move foward and move on and progress when its the black people who keep holding that back. I understand your struggle, i know what you went through, and it was terrible and it was wrong, but at some point you have to move on and not only that but you have to HELP your people move on. Using derogatory language is not the way to move foward. I agree with Elisabeth, Sheri isn't doing anything to help the cause. and whoopi, if you took the word and made it into something with a different meaning to you, then pick a different word!!! that way you can leave all the hardships and horrible memories behind. BE PROGRESSIVE.
elizabeth obviously lives on a different planet. i honestly think it's out of naivete that she said "we all live in the same world." as much i would like to think that we all live in happy harmony, statistics and real life show that the issue of color is still very prevalent and that both cultures have a long way to go before the separate worlds can be united. i feel a bit bad for her because it was obvious she was too busy talking instead of listening and processing what whoopie was saying. i like how goldberg tried to explain the n-word and who had the right to say it. i thought the explanation of why white people absolutely cannot say the n-word and why black people can say it was pretty simple: look at america's history concerning black slavery and then take a look at the civil rights movement. it's all about taking back what was wrongfully taken.

I so agree with Elizabeth. All the other women made themselves look like fools. It's not okay for ANYONE of ANY race to say that word. Black people also need to stop segrating themselves and get over the past if they truely want to live equal lives with everyone else. EVERY single race of people has had HARD times. Too me, anytime I ever hear someone use the N word I think they are uneducated and ignorant. Whether they are black, white, yellow, green….I don't care. I think it sounds terrible and has so much bad history tied to it. But that's it! It's HISTORY….as in the past. Yes your ancestors were slaves. But that doesn't make all white people bad. None of us alive today were your slave owners….. and we shouldn't have to apologize for something that happened years ago that we had no part in. I hate that it happened. It's really sad that it happened. But it's just like move on if it didn't affect you personally! BTW, it baffles me as to why black people want to even continue the use of that word. Let it die out with all of you and it will disappear probably.
It's hard to say what we should do about this word. I think it's an ugly word when people who aren't black use it towards blacks but when I hear my brothers or other guy friends and guy relatives call each other "nigga" I don't think it sounds so bad because it has become a part of pop culture. But since I'm Mexican, I always wonder if black people would get really pissed of if they heard them talk like that. I get it that it's a word that black people "took back" and started using in their own way but I WOULD NEVER DREAM OF CALLING MYSELF OR MY PEOPLE "WETBACKS" OR EVEN "BEANERS"!! That is an offensive word no matter who uses it and it would hurt the same if a fellow Mexican would use it as a white person. I'm not sure if we'll ever understand this whole situation with the N word. Besides doesn't it mean "ignorant"? Anyone can be one so maybe we should use it's proper definition and use it appropriately? Or just learn this so that blacks can understand that they don't own the word, it's for anyone to use as long as it's not used in a racist way.

THE N WORD HAS EVOLVED into different meanings for different people…I see a lot of poor arguments on both ends and in the middle on here. What the two black women on the View are getting at could be totally different than what y'all are reacting to. They're coming from a time much closer to the days of blatant segregation…when the N word was used so much more to hurt. I think they're saying on the View that blacks can say it because they've come so far and in a rightful sense are showing it's theirs to use, too. It's pissing everyone off because we're getting further and further from those times when affirmative action was a dream. Just think about these things before reacting so angrily. We all need to talk about it but we need to talk about it from an understanding of the history of it all.

I wish that black people would understand how difficult it is to be white in this day and age. We are constantly being berraded for our ancestor's mistakes, when we personally didn't have anything to do with it. And that is very hurtful when we are being blamed for something we never condoned. And I do think it is ridiculously hypocritical when the Reverend Jesse Jackson says he doesn't condone the use of the "n" word, but then he turns around and uses it privately. I'm sorry, but that is Elizabeth's whole point. If you have a problem with it, you can't use it then. I just think it is such a horrible, horrible word. Why can't we all just get along?!

Most black students from bad neighborhoods would NEVER get a scholarship if it weren't for those made specially for them. you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
