. This movie was probably much more true to the graphic novels which are really dark. I am not into the cheesy super hero movies, I think they are boring. This movie had so many layers of depth that it amazed me….stick to gossip…not being a movie critic you know jack about it
As far as the Joker is concerned, I think Ledger did an amazing job. As people have stated he wasn't supposed to be a well developed character. The story that Alfred told about the thief in the jungle who stole gems for no reason illustrates this. He was maniacal simply because he could be.

amazing movie. ledger disappeared completely into his role and became this whole other person. it was so dark, and away from the cheezy comic book movies we've come to know, like Spider-Man 3. The sheer psychotic attidue of the joker made the movie what it was, ruthless and dark. Amazing movie.
I agree with both you perez and the other comments above. The movie was AWESOME but it didn't leave me wanting more. Batman Begins? I wanted MORE! Magee G. wasn't as horrific as you explained… she was boring but then again I think that's what they were going for because both Katie Holmes and Maggie G. are plain, boring actresses. I thought Heath gave an outstanding performance for his role only because we had never seen him play this type of character & he nailed it! And I agree with the people when they say that the jokers character isn't suppose to go into much depth because he is Psychotic enough to know that he must have went through major trauma & that's what made him who he is and that was sort of explained when Harvey Dent goes through a traumatizing experience in the movie which then makes him go on a psycho rampage! But OVERALL IT WAS DEFINITELY WORTH IT & a movie i'de like to add to my collection but you were right it wasn't THE BEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!

The batman films have been a weird mixed bag - they range from (first two) dark , risqué , edgy and ultimately more faithful to the vision of the comics to the later films - high camp , slapschticky with the emphasis on aesthetic rather than meaningful story anchored in the vision of the cbs' .

The Batman films (with the exception of the first two maybe) aren't for the comic book fan cOrR , they've more or less condemned the bm franchise to languish in variable degrees of mediocrity by consigning it to the "family summer movie" pigeonhole.

Well I haven't seen the movie but Batman is supposed to be a dark story and the Joker isn't supposed to have character development. He's a whack job, completely insane….that's it. I guess you were too busy playing with Barbies to bother with the comics. And FYI, in the very original comics, Batman carried a gun. So yeah, no lightheartedness there.

Well, I did not see the movie yet, but I love Maggie Gyllenhaal, so I was a bit upset about you talking shit about her performance. Perez. I agree with you! It's a really good movie. It's exactly what I expected. I hope everyone sees it. But there was none of the "Wow!" stuff for me..except the huge truck. Funny. Before the movie started, they showed previews, and four different movie previews I saw blew things up, huge explsions, car crashes, etc. By the time TDK came on, I was sort of desensitized to all that. I also think there was an editing and a pacing problem. They needed to get PG13 so they edited out stuff they should have showed. If they were going to show Harvey Dent as Two Face, which they did and he was gross, then why not show the pencil, and the knife and some of the other stuff. I thought the car chase sequence boring because it went on too long and they'd done it before. I think that a lot could have been solved with better editing. As for characters, I thought Heath was superb. He was great. He was Oscar worthy. His character did have depth and humor, too. But the rest of the cast, except for Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman, were kind of wooden, cookie cutters. That includes Batman. And I adore Christian Bale. There was also too much philosophy going on. Who needs that crap! It was dark, but so was Lord of the Rings. I'll go see TDK again. I want to try IMAX next.

I completely disagree with you. I felt that the director avoided giving the characters a back story so that you wouldn't get too emotionally attached to them or try to justify their horrible acts. Batman's backstory was in the previous movie, as was Rachel Dawe's. So, this movie was Harvey Dent's back story. If you heard one of the many options for the Joker's back story, you would feel sorry for him too much and might have justified his actions for his insanity. But, in this Batman, he is suposed to beentire story was a a psychotic, mass murderer with zero empathy. Anything otherwise would diminish the Joker's threat.
Also, it may have been really long, but I didn't notice because I was having such an awesome time. The entire movie was an adrenaline rush. It didn't need an enormous act of violence because the entire movie was an adrenaline rush. If there was anything bigger, I would have had a heart attack.

you are sooooooooooo wrong. dark night was amazing! batman showed so much growth from beginning to the end of the film. he came to terms with what kind of hero he needs to be for gotham. he is a noble hero and a great assest that is taken for granted in gotham. your right, aaron eckhart was great, but it was still christian bale's movie. heath was absolutely terrifying as the joker and i would have liked to know a little more back story, but i was so pleased and delighted with his performances. and maggie gyllenhaal was not shit. she was great. she was smart, pretty, assertive. she doesnt stand by and let bruce wayne/batman control her. she does what she wants and is a very strong character. and the movie did not feel like 2.5 hours. i left the theater wishing it was longer.

i've got tp say perez- i'm really shocked at your review of the dark night….. i thought it was an excellent film- all the way around. it was more poetic and pshychological than a 'comic book' movie… ledger was genious. the joker is not supposed to have any character development. he is pure evil. nor is batman- they both are dealing with with events of their childhood and using that to power their lives. i was so very impressed. i do not see this movie beeing topped.

I think development in characters especially villans and the villan-like superheros like batman is so important. It had it's flaws though most movies do. It's an amazing movie and probably the greatest superhero movie ever made. In some ways it feels so real and gritty that it doesn't seem like a superhero movie. Watching Ledger disappear into the Joke is one the the greatest acting jobs I've ever seen. He was absolutely amazing and stole every scene he was is.
This movie is fucking awesome.. well written, well directed and well acted. Ledger should win an Oscar for it. His performance gave us the best villain since Hannibal Lecter. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

the movie was awesome. Your thing about character development tho, especially with the joker, is off. the joker, in the comics, has no permenant start. look online. thats why he is the joker, he doesnt really have a start, none of this, oh he was a child his parents where killed blah blah. theres no origin, not even a real name. so in that respect, your judging that when, u dont even know the actual fact. he is just crazy…his biggest relationship is with batman, which they make very clear. and to make it rated R, they would lose a lot of money, so, how could they? even tho many ppl would try to get in anyway, theres prolly a majority that wouldnt bother

I have NOOOO idea what movie Perez saw, because this was by far one of the most thrilling, character driven movies I've seen to date. Perhaps it wasn' gay enough or "soft" enough for Perez, but if you have the mental fortitude to grasp the manical plots and twists, you will be THRILLED with this movie!!!!

Ok I know we are all entitled to our own opinions etc… but COME ON!!! The movie and Heath were BRILLIANT! When I left the theater I was exhausted from watching it. It had everything you could want in a movie and more…. the only thing I agree with you on, is Maggie Gylenhaal, I cannot believe I am saying this but I liked Katie "every charachter is Joey Potter" Holmes better! To me it was a perfrct popcorn action movie and the best comic book movie ever made.
Batman was not bit by an insect or shot with Gamma rays, he is a real guy and everything in that movie last night could really happen… that is what I like about it.

I do agree it was too long and there was a lot of talking… but I thought it was awesome, and I'm not into superheros much. Some scenes were putting me to sleep (given I worked 9 hour shift earlier that day and didn't nap…). The movie was WAY too long. I think they could have cut a lot of unnecessary stuff out. Maggie was better than Katie Holmes, but still not great at all, I agree. She kinda annoyed me at points. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, thanks to Heath Ledger's awesome psychotic performance.

Perez I love you but disagree. Some of the flaws of action movies is too many over the top action sequences and not enough intellectual intensity. I'd give Dark Knight three and a half stars out of four. In Batman Begins Katie Holmes was flat and lacked personality (plus she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag). I'm glad she wasn't in this one. Maggie Gyllenhaal was much better, but not spectacular, but then again, her part was minor at best. Ledger was fantastic, Oldman as usual was flawless, and the reality is, where other Batman and action movies have a set star or two, this was truly an ensemble movie and it worked quite well. Personally, I found it the perfect blend of psychological thriller and action movie. I'll see it again.
Last night I saw Mama Mia before Dark Knight - girls night out. See Mama Mia Perez, it was quite good; though not as good as the broadway production. It was difficult to get past Meryl Streeps unattractive face every time there was a close up and Julie Walters (Mrs. Weasley from Harry Potter fame & the phenomenal Educating Rita w/Michael Caine) stole every scene she was in.

Re: cerys – totally agree , I've lost all interest in the mish-mash-mess that are bm movies personally because of the fluctuations. From the broody dark edgy (the first two) Tim Burton perfection – to the whimsical George Clooney drool fest "family films" that followed. Such a shame they had to leap so hastily from the brilliant tone the first two set.
It was great. Christian Bale was amazing, as always, but the movie really wasn't about him it was all about the joker, who by the way stole the show.

Why are some of you so mean to Perez? Why are you on this website then? As far as the movie…I agree with most of what you said, but I didn't like it that much. It did go on way too long. I also thought it was over far long before it really was. And I wasn't into Maggie Gyllenhall (?) at all.

First, let me compliment you and say you look fantastic. I'm a big fan of your sight, but not always your opinion. Second, I think you really need to go see this film again. Try seeing it in a regular theater and not in IMAX, perhaps, and before you go, breeze through some Batman graphic novels if you can. Batman IS dark. He is not red white and blue like Superman or even Spidey. Gotham is a shitehole with horrible villains and a police department that cannot keep up. I agree with you on one thing…it should have been rated R, but what studio is going to put an R rating on something into which they want to draw teenagers? Think also about the film's purpose- to introduce Two-Face, to show the Joker's one-dimensionality (as well as create a foil for Batman), and to make Batman Gotham's "outlaw" because that's what they need. It moved the story along amazingly, and Heath Ledger? When you think about all his other performances and that aw-shucks adorable quality he has, then you see him as this completely depraved maniac-that's an amazing performance. He disappeared to become one of the most ruthless villains I've seen on screen. See it again…

I saw the midnight screening and it was amazing. I love the joker doing his pencil magic trick. That was insane!!
