it was the best batman movie ever! Joker was an AMAZING CHARACTER and so was Two-Face!
Awesome storyline and by far one of the best movie this summer!!!!!!!

I thought the movie was great. Heath did a great job and Maggie really did suck ass though.. I completely agree that it didn't have that much of a super hero vibe to it. I wanted it more about batman not that Harvey dude.. It had some comedy to it but it wasn't cheesy..I'd go see it again. i give it 4 stars. GO SEE IT!

saw it yesterday! loved it! wish I was able to see it in IMAX but it was sold out for days. it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen but I thought it was incredibly well done, very entertaining, and of course Heath Ledger rocked the role of the Joker so hardcore. great movie! I'll prob see it again in IMAX in a few weeks.

    RIP Heath!

I think your review was incredibly immature. It's time for you to go sign up for a public speaking class, as well. Because it was quite annoying to listen to you babble on. Next time write out some notes, maybe then you can keep track of your thoughts.

This movie was truly brilliant. And Health Ledger gave a stunning performance.

This is the worst review by a wannabe film critic I have ever read. "Character arc", "three-dimensional characters", and so on, yes, Perez, you have all the right "lingo", unfortunately, you don't know WTF you are even talking about. Take "character arc" for instance, are you saying that Perez Hilton is so experienced in film that he even knows what a character arc looks like? Is this something you are supposded to "see" on film Perez, or something you "see" in your stupid mind? It's obvious the "little boy perez" wants to re-experience all the "wow" he experienced when mommy and daddyy first took wee perezy to the "movies" (what, was that 10-15 years ago?). Actually, I really think a fat, little pink pig like you should just shut up and stop thinking. You are nice to look at (in an amusing way) but nothing that comes out of your mouth has any real intelligence in it at all. If you didin't like the film, why not just say it, but to try and analyze it (intelligently) just makes you (or, revelas you) as stupid. rock on fat boy.

I wonder if seeing it in IMAX might've warped the movie for you. I wanted to see it on a regular screen first so I could follow the movie without being distracted by the scope and size of the picture.

Heath Leder's character wasn't supposed to develop. They flat out said that he's a man who "just wants to watch the world burn" he wasn't a person, he was a caricature with no soul. Your review sounds like one of someone who went in looking for things to dislike in order for you to be able to cut down the hype. I do the same thing sometimes, but not for this one, I thought the movie was excellent.

Love you perez, but I do not agree. TOO LONG? Wtf the Titanic was too fucking long, about people dying on a god damn boat. This movie was amazing, and heath ledger blew my damn mind. OH my god Sex and the City was probably amazing to you, but ummm it probably wasn't all that good anyway. Movie of the Year in my opinion. RIP Heath

Re: Mary – haha i love how youre concerned about perez's feelings, HAVE YOU EVEN READ THIS WEBSITE? all he does is bash people, i mean for christ sake, the things he said about maggie gyl alone in this short video were pretty horrible. just let him do what he does and expect everything that comes along with it, good AND bad.

  13. Joe K says – reply to this

    413

I think you're completely wrong. No characters developed? I think that Harvey's development from the "White Knight" of Gotham to Two-Face is incredible. Harvey goes from this iconic all American hero, into a corrupted criminal. You thought there wasn't any internal suffering? Did you even see Harvey? Or the way Bruce had to grapple with the loss of a loved one and then accept his role as the "Dark Knight," to become the Anti-Hero? TDK was as much a character study, psychological drama, and thriller as much as it was a "super hero" movie. As for it not being enough fun- that's just ridiculous. This is a brilliant and in depth film. Also if you've ever read any of the actual Batman comics you would see that it is quite dark at times. (i.e. The Long Halloween). This was more of a graphic novel film- if you've read any (not just batman, but Alan Moore's stuff [Watchmen, V for Vendetta] or Gaiman's Sandman or a million more) you might understand that better.

I think you're completely off base, and really rather shallow to berate it for "not being enough fun" and for completely missing half of the movie. Furthermore, as for it being about Harvey Dent- you have to see that he was a HUGE symbol for the movie. Bruce wanted Harvey to be his successor, but the Joker managed to corrupt even the most pure of Gotham.(continued)

  14. Joe K says – reply to this

    414

Also, the Joker did not have a lot of character development, because he wasn't really fully human in a sense. He was a self-proclaimed "agent of chaos-" he exists as Batman's foil. He lives to kill and kills without reason. Yes, this may lack personality and character development but it also presents him as one of the most terrifying screen villains. Also, it adds layer to one of the other complicated dimensions of the film as it explores terrorism and the means to fight it.

Really I thought this movie was brilliant, well executed, and lived up to all expectations.

    415

Most of you are jumping on the bandwagon because Heath has passed away… would you have the same opinion if we all weren't so empathic to his passing on? I believe the character was great…. but too much of Harvey Denton, way too much.. it's "Batman, the Dark Knight"… I agree as well with Perez, why is the Joker like that???

    424

Well Perez first I just want to say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And though i do not agree with yours, I appreciate that you gave an honest opinion probably knowing you would be in the minority.
I had been waiting for this movie for a long time and went into it holding the highest of standards that it would be one of the greatest movies I would ever see. My expectations did not even compare to what I saw. This movie had so much depth and left me thinking about it long after I left the theater. Heath ledger's performance is what everyone is talking about and I agree with all of the positive feedback. He brought so much to the character, I was deeply disturbed in fact at many of his scenes, which was awesome hehe. There were so many twists and turns that everyone was left speechless. Aaron Eckhart is someone that also deserves a lot of credit for a wonderful performance. The fight and action sequences were second to none and had me covering my mouth in disbelief. Christian Bale yet again pulled off an incredible multi faceted performance and helped us to learn a lot about not only Batman but Bruce Wayne as a person. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy this movie and really think about the story. The fact that it was very dark only makes Gotham City that much more realistic. It is a crime ridden city that is almost out of control, I don't understand how you would want it to be fun.

  25. Kemi says – reply to this

    425

Wow Perez, I can't believe how ignorant your criticism is. The Dark Knight wasn't the typical Super Hero movie. Also, The characters were NOT supposed to develop, for the exception of Bruce Wayne. In the beginning he thought he could handle everything on his own, he though he had to be the perfect super Hero, but by the end he realized that he is the "dark Knight" Gotham needs, whether his decisions are popular or unpopular. That was an easy one to sort out. Also, Batman met his match in Gotham, The Joker, who was played flawlessly by Heath Ledger. The "Ace in the hole" was Two-Face who forshadowed his fate about hero's living lon enough to see themselfves turn into a villan. I can't understand how your brain is so obtuse. This movie was sheer genious. I love you and your site; I usually agree with your criticism…But not this time. This time you are very wrong. Maybe the "Wow" factor you were looking for was the glitter and song and dance routine you can find in Mama Mia.

If you were not "WOWED" you are one of the stupidest people in the world and nothing will ever WOW your dumbass. It is ranked number 3 on IMDB after only a day. Yea its the best movie EVER made and Heath Ledger deserves an Oscar. not just a nomination but a win.

    433

Well, I have to say I completely agree with Perez on this one….there were some spots in the movie where I was actually bored. It needed less talk, more action. The movie was definitely missing the "WOW" factor. And Maggie Gyllenhaal was horrible….it wasn't memorable. I was like who gives a shit about Rachel. I had already forgotten about her character. Perez, I must say…..solid review!!

Maggie was o.k. but to me it wasn't suppose to even be about her anyways…And it does have that WOW factor! And you said that the movie was too dark?? Well, that was what they were going for duhh! I personally hated batman begins…This movie KICKED MAJOR ASS!! I loved IT!!!! I give it 5 stars!!! If you haven't already GO SEE IT!

Coincidence or art imitating life? The slow downward spiral towards fascism grabs some fast momentum with a bit of slight-of-hand propaganda from the new Batman movie, ‘Dark Knight.’ The recent push towards open martial law in Chicago is an eerie reflection of the Dark Knight production, which filmed many of its Gotham scenes in downtown Chicago last summer. In the film, the Joker (Heath Ledger) creates so much chaos and violence that the National Guard (Gotham National Guard) is brought in to suppress riots and restore order. During filming, extras were dressed up as national guard troops were seen by many Chicago natives acting in scenes and also providing ’security’ for the civilian extras during takes. Military helicopters, armored vehicles and hundreds of uniformed extras maneuvered in downtown Chicago for several days while their scenes were filmed, creating the atmosphere, albeit a fictional one, of open martial law and military code of conduct for all citizens.

Your review sucks. You must have LOVED Narnia for all of its magic and splendour. Batman: The Dark Knight was AMAZING. Heath Ledger was not supposed to have character development as the Joker was coming into the film as an absolute. Plus, Harvey Dent had all the character development anyone was ever going to need. Don't review films Perez, you suck at it.

    445

dear perez, i love you but i really hate the comment you made about the dark knight. i think is was amazing. i think that all the actors (well, except for maggie cause katie holmes originally played her role) have fully developed their acting skills. they were great if i may say so. and about heath ledgers performance, well perez, let me tell you this, we do know for a fact that days before the death of heath ledger he was having some major personal issues especially his stress on his insomia and inner personal fears that's why he has to take all those pills. one of the main reasons he had to go through all that is because of the role he played, which is joker. in the movie his character was really "distrubed". i dont get why you criticize heath's performance negatively because he did internalized his role very well, that's why he had those "issues". regarding the "wow" factor, this is just not one of those typical hero movie which you would expect it to be fun and superhero-y because its just not. this movie is meant to be this way. first of all batman doesnt really have superpowers, his offense and defense are based on his weapons and gadgets and second, he doesnt consider himself a hero. so it's just common sense not to expect it to be superhero-y. i love you very much perez but i just felt compelled to comment on this. i totally disagree with your review.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I wanted to love this movie, but thought it was OK. I wanted Heath to win the Oscar, but thought he did a good job and that he was a great actor, but this role wasn't Oscar worthy as the buzz has stated. Before people jump on me , he was excellant. I think he was great in almost every role he has played including this one, just mot oscar worthly. I thought the movie was rather slow and their were definitly some editing issues. Over all I am very glad I saw the film, but didn't love it.

  53. Rache says – reply to this

    453

    hey perez,

i'm surprised by your review!! you didn't even mention what you thought about heath ledger's performance as the joker. however, i do agree with you that batman was not the central character. he shared the spotlight with both harvey and the joker.

i, too saw batman in the I-max, which was definitely cool. It really enhanced the experience. I thought the movie was great from beginning to end. Heath definitely stole the show. oddly enough, the joker was my favorite character to watch. i give the movie a 4.5 out of 5.

i feel as thought i should mention that i live in the south suburbs of chicago, so seeing "my city" throughout the film added extra excitement. it's much more exciting to see batman flying through a train station when it is a train station you have walked through many times.

    go see the movie!

I agree with you on most of it! Especially character development.

And I really missed Batman in this one! The movie should have been more focused on him.

I disagree - I thought Maggie G. was fantastic! Much better than the robotic, pathetic, unconvincing portrayal of Katie Holmes.

I thought it was a good movie- not one of my favorites, but worth seeing.

  57. Chels says – reply to this

    457

You can't go to a Batman flick expecting a "superhero" movie. Batman is an anti-hero. He's twisted and dark and screwed up. The stories aren't fun, and they were never really meant to be. I understand that people who don't pay attention to the point could have gone expecting a Spiderman-esque flick… but those reviews can be thrown out with the people who give them.
If you went to this movie expecting lighthearted explosions, you deserve to be disappointed. If you went knowing WHY you were going, you were blown away… just like me.

I wasn't too thrilled with the movie. I thought it was too long and confusing. Heath Ledger annoyed the hell out of me cause he kept smaking his lips together 3when he spoke, and that was just a bother. He is a good actor, and did a good job but this was just annoying.. sorry to say. It was also WAYYYY too long. Couldn't been a good 45 minutes shorter. I agree with Perez about Maggie Gyllenhall, she did suck. They could have picked someone better, thats for sure. But tbe movie didn't completly suck,

  61. 461

Hi perez. I just saw it today and I kinda have to agree with you in terms of what i felt after seeing it. i felt like "yeah it was a REALLY good movie." but it wasn't the GREAT movie i was expecting and I guess i went in to it with high expectations. I thought Heath Ledger was AMAZING! But i agree there was no real character development. however I felt his character was meant to be developed in a future sequel. Sadly i don't know what they'll do with the character now. Maggie G left me flat as well. not to the extremes you put it but I think that it may be the fault of who wrote her character b/c i think she's a good actress. Much better than Katie holmes! ( i'm curious as to why she didn't do this movie as it would have been a great career move for her…Tom may have had a say perhaps? at any rate our gain, her loss) I enjoyed the movie at any rate and will watch it again when it comes out on dvd. I felt too it was VERY gritty but as you said if they are going to go hard then go ALL the way and make it like a Tarantino experience almost. Ultimatley I LOVE what Christopher Nolan has done with reviving the franchise and I eagely await the next installment.

    464

    Perez,

I am never reading your page again. You are seriously misguided in many things that you say and this sad excuse for a post is the last straw. Not only is this move breaking serious numbers but - every single review of this movie has been amazing AND every delusional comment you said was completely WRONG. "Not enough action sequences????" ARE YOU INSANE? A pencil gets shoved through a man's head and that's just the first of a thrill ride adventure of cars exploding, a truck flipping over and a bus slamming into a bank - the amazing fact that while it was dark, it was really funny too - the comedic timing was impeccable. HEATH proved he could be dark, scary, insane, and FUNNY as hell. Aaron's crazy two face was soo graphic - it LOOKED like we were watching a real comic book. It was too great and you are too gay to understand.

Like I said, I'm never returning to your page ever again.

  65. 465

why do you always refer to yourself as we??? do you have an imaginary friend? or just think that you are super cool so you can pretend like you are more than one person?

  66. Domin says – reply to this

    466

I disagree, for one the joker was not supposed to develop, that was the point. He has no rules and sticks w/ that. I'm also glad that they're making these movies dark, it's more realistic (well as realistic as a movie about superheros can be). Also, I think that batman developed, he realized that he's more than a hero because he is ok with being hated as long as he can keep Gotham safe. During the movie he was ready to quite, and at the end he understood what it was he had to do. This is already a long comment so I won't ramble, but I think it was a fantastic movie and I'm surprised you did't see it the same way.

I love you Perez, but did you even see The Dark Knight? I loved it. It had that WOW, AH OHH, factor. It has become my favorite movie. I'm very dissapointed that you feel this way. But I've been waiting 3 years to see this film. And it was worth it. Well nothing you can do if you think it lacks.
    Heath Ledger=Joker

    468

so the only reason this movie was hyped up the ass, is because heath ledger died. if he was alive, people wouldnt give a shit and wouldnt have called it a "phenomenal" movie. the joker got way too much screen time, just cuz hes dead.

  69. L says – reply to this

    469

Wow, Perez! I actually, for the most part, disagree with you for once.. I'll give that some of the characters did not have a lot of dimension.. but the ones who MATTERED (Harvey, Bruce) did, and the Joker wasn't supposed to. The Joker is supposed to be a completely deranged man who 'just wants to watch the world burn.' and Heath Ledger portrayed that BRILLIANTLY. In one scene I went from being horrified by the joker, to pitying him, to laughing with him.. He was an INTENSE character and Heath Ledger gave an INTENSELY AMAZING performance. I am a Batman NERD and I loved this. I loved all the different meanings of 'dark knight' throughout the movie.. I loved the fact that it was PLOT and not just FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT.. And I loved that fact that Christian Bale is fucking sexy. The only thing that was not amazing about this movie was Christian Bale's deep Batman voice, and even that was one of the best parts of the movie hahahaa. I LOVED it. I was scared, I was on the edge of my seat, I was laughing, I was tearing up… It was everything I wanted.

i disagree with just about everything perez said.
the nolan brothers weren't trying to make a usual meat-headed super hero movie, they stayed closer to the graphic novel and the end result was incredibly successful.
and maggie gyllenhaal was a major improvement over the alien fucker!

Okay first off i seen that someone said that Heath Ledger wasn't a great actor and that people are only saying that he was because he passed away… ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!! Go see the movie and then judge! He was fucking scary in this movie, he really made me believe he was the joker and personally that's what i want from any character in any movie! Heath did an AMAZING JOB! Cb and Heath balanced eachother very well in this movie neither one out shined the other, they BOTH were equally AMAZING! And as for the movie being too dark, ummm that's what they were going for! And actually it wasn't THAT dark because there are some comical scenes in it! The part when Heath blows up the hospital, i laughed my ass off! I LOVED IT!!! GO SEE IT!!!

i think you should refrain from reviewing film. i don't think you made a single valid point about the movie. everything you said was uninformed and trivial.

apparently we did not see the same movie perez

i personally LOVED the movie i believed it was made perfectly
if the deaths were anymore graphic it'd be another "hostel" or "saw" which its not supposed to be

it was mainly based around harvey dent because it builds up his character as Two-Face

i dunno but i really liked the movie and i think heath ledger did a phenomenal job (and scared the crap out of me) he truly made the joker his role and i highly doubt anyone now can be recasted as the joker without being heavily compared to heath

I agree about the characters being underdeveloped. EXCEPT for Heath's performance. That was cool. I thought he played it really well. It was supposed to be a psychopathic character that made decisions based without much logic.
Movie was pretty cool, but I think Heath totally out shined the others. I'm glad this is the way we'll remember him as far as being an actor, b/c he was amazing.

I don't agree with you, Perez. The film was not supposed to be like all the other corny super hero movies out there and I thought the plot and all of the charcters were perfect. I felt that there were wayy too many action sequences…I don't get how much more you could cram in there, Perez? HEATH LEDGER IS THE JOKER-he was astounding and I had chills the entire time he was on screen! I think he merits an Oscar for his performance in this film. I LOVE that they didn't make it cheesy, corny super-hero-ish b.c I am sick of those movies and the Batmans from before with Mr. Freeze and all that other crap became ridic and tainted batman in my head…until NOW!!! BEST BATMAN MOVIE EVER!!! XOXOXOChristina

Re: Amber – First of all I can say that I've been waiting for this movie for a year and a half since the first pictures of Heath as the Joker came out and yes, I'm sure Heath's death did convince a lot of people to see it and will sway their opinions of the movie. But as a big Batman nerd I can say it REALLY surpassed my expectations. And as for 'Batman- The Dark Knight'… there was a double meaning there. Harvey Dent was 'The White Knight' until he suffered a huge loss.. causing him to seek revenge and thus become a DARK KNIGHT himself. DARK KNIGHT was also a reference to the Dark NIGHT.. 'The night is darkest just before the dawn.' And of course, Batman is THE dark knight. Anway, I'm just saying, Harvey Dent was as important a character as anyone in this movie because Bruce wanted him to be his successor…

I loved it! I think the character of Joker doesn't need to show inner turmoil so to speak. He has none. He's crazy just because he likes to be. Sometimes one doesn't need inner turmoil to be bat shit crazy. I'll agree with Maggie Gyllenhal. She totally sucked. She has stroke face in some shots and she just bugs me. The movie may lack a lot of action sequences, but the ones that it does have KICK ASS. Really I think the movie is dealing with the question of good vs. evil not on a super hero sense but on a human level. Are humans inherently good or evil? If left to their own devices will they eat each other alive or push through awful situations with hope? Who chooses to be a leader and who chooses to be walking anarchy and is it possible to be a little of both? And yes, it's a very dark movie but read the graphic novels and the comic books. Technically, Batman is as bat shit crazy as joker he just is crazy with a moral code. Anyway, it's some food for thought.

As far as character development goes, the last movie gave you all the development needed for Bruce and Rachel. The Joker is meant to be an anomaly, he's not supposed to be understood or relatable. I think there was a great deal of development with Harvey as we saw him go from the idealistic hope of Gotham to a bitter vengeful villain.
If you saw the last movie then surely you were expecting this movie to follow suit in being dark and gritty. I actually found this one less scary and disturbing than Batman Begins.
While I agree it perhaps didn't live up to all of my expectations, I definately enjoyed it a lot. Your critique honestly makes you sound like you're trying to use as many buzz words as possible but you have no idea what you are talking about.

Re: sg – First of all, congratulations on being extremely disrespectful. And secondly, if you weren't a dipshit you'd realize there's been hype about this movie for 2 years. Heath's been dead for about 6 months. Yes, his death did increase the hype and excitement to see him in his last completed film. And in a way, that's good, because the public should have seen this performance and realized how diverse and immensely talented this man was. But this movie still would have had a phenomenal opening had Heath been alive. Maybe not AS phenomenal, but still great. I mean, its Batman!

Believe the hype. While the horribly staffed Muvico Paradise 24 prevented me from seeing the entirety of The Dark Knight, I can tell you this: The 2 hours that I saw was wholly entertaining, well acted, cohesive, tension-filled and utterly engrossing drama. Part 1:

    I didn't dislike it.

It was a decent movie, actually pretty good. It went pretty quickly for me, and I didn't find myself groaning, but I agree that there was no "Wow!"

There were a few LOL moments, and a few shocking bits, but not enough of them for a 2.5 hour movie. It was overall a little bland.

I think Heath Ledger was really good, though I don't think he was as brilliant as all the critics were saying. If he gets an Oscar for that, it will only be because of his tragic death in my opinion. He certainly did a good job for what he was given.

I do have to argue what you said about The Joker having no "inner turmoil". The whole point was that he had no depth. He didn't have alterior motives, or real justification for his actions. He was just a plain psycho. Like he said [paraphrasing] "I'm like a dog chasing a car. I don't know what I'd do if I ever caught it."

i thought the movie was greattttt. heath ledgers performance was amaaaaaaaazing. no one else could have done that. i agree i hated maggie gyllenhaal .. they couldnt get a good looking actress to play the part? christian bale was good too and aaron eckhart played his character reaaaaalllyyy well. but my favorite was most deffinitly the joker. i think heath's performance made the movie. incredible. i love you heath rip

  99. 499

I saw the movie at 12:01, busted ass tired from a day at the Jersey shore followed by work; dude i even took a nap in the car before the movie started. By the end of the movie i was wide awake, excited and amazed. I'm so disappointed that you didnt love it, how could you not. I agree with you on maggie's performance though, shiteous, i'd have preferred tom's wife (purple hands and all) to the shit they put up on that screen. but eerything else was nothing less than stellar. This film is not about Batman, it's about Gotham. It's class of villain and how's its greatest villain is its hero. This sure as hell is not the Batman of the 90s. This is DC Comics' Batman: gritty and real. The only thing Bruce Wayne has is smarts, money and human condition; no super powers. IDK, I just think that those who don't like the film (i've read some really bad shit) just can't appreciate it for what it is, which is Batman the comic book.

    the end

    Hey Perez,

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING IT REAL!! The movie was hype! If Heath Ledger had not died it probably wouldn't have this much hype to it. The movie was ok and even long in some places. And Jack Nicholson is still the best joker. Hollywood throws a lot of money at something and the sheep fall for it. If they tell you it's hot the public will fall for it. And you know what? The people I saw the movie with were not that impressed either, they came in excited and there was no hand clapping, shouting etc. They left disappointed. Hollywood has done a brilliant job at the box office but this movie was just ok not GREAT. At least I know they are not paying you to hype it and I'm glad. BTW I saw the film in Kalamazoo, MI.
