Menace to Society?

Cops in Flint, Michigan are literally playing fashion police!

According to reports, the city's new chief of police has ordered his officers to start arresting saggers*.

Saggers could face jail time and hefty fines for a fad he calls "immoral self expression."

He later told a local paper the style could give officers probable cause to search saggers.

WTF?

Flint is in America!

We still have some freedom of expression rights in our country, don't we?

Michael Moore, what's your hometown thinking?

No worries…the ACLU is on the case. They've threatened to take the Flint cops to court if they insist on citing peeps for sagging.

*Saggers = fans of wearing their pants low - very low!

Update: A reader points out something very interesting.

"Although I'm not a fan of the baggy jeans look, most folks don't know that the whole look didn't start as a fashion statement, but because poor kids always had to wear hand me down clothing …so in the hood, everyone was wearing pants, shirts and shoes that were way too big for them. The look is a nod to that …and when folks challenge that, it's often because they don't understand the context."

Update #2: Inneresting.

Another reader offers a different take on things.

"On the posting about the new saggy pants citations in Mich you have an update from a reader who points out the tradition stems from poor kids wearing hand-me-down clothes. This is not true. It stems from the fact that when in prison, prisoners aren't allowed to have belts, so their prison issue pants often sag very low. The style of saggy pants was brought to the street as a show of toughness associated with the prison/gangster lifestyle. And the citations aren't really about freedom of expression. One of the main reasons saggy pants are being banned in many places (including in many schools) is because it makes it easier to conceal guns."

Update #3:

You guys are so smart!

Another reader points out an interesting hypothesis, " just an update, they are STRUGGLING in michigan and they are trying to find some way to make money, especiallllly oakland county. that's why they're enforcing this."

Actually in Sacramento where im from, the rocker kids wear sagging tight skinny leg jeans under their butts all the time so its not just a black thing. In any case arresting people for their clothing is obscene…

HAHAHA. I think it's funny that people have to try and justify everything. I'm pretty sure the people sagging these days are not wearing "hand-me-downs." Nice try though. They do it to make a statement and look like fucking idiots. There is really no reason to look like you are about to rob a bank or jump me in the alley. Instead, go to a tailor and get your pants to fit. OR MAYBE, buy your own size?! What a concept.

    Re: karle
They're not going to place them in jail… they're going to search them. If they find anything on them, THEN they're going to place them in jail. It's a great way to get people to start wearing their pants, and and even BETTER way to get people to think twice before carrying anything illegal on their persons.

Anyone who thinks this law is about "fashion" needs to think twice. This law is about safety, and it's a great idea.

Um, my brother is a correctional officer, and he told me, wearing your pants down very low is a signal that you are open to being someone's bitch. So, "saggers" are copying that. It's a stupid trend, and they all need to grow up. I've seen them down over their ass and having to hold onto their silly huge belt buckles to even walk. I applaud Flint Michigan for doing something about this idiotic trend.

    105

I call bullshit on that *update you posted, Perez. It is a quaint notion that sagging started because peeps didn't have clothes that fit, but actually, i believe, it was a fashion trend that started in prisons, where they aren't allowed to wear belts, so everyone was "sagging." Then they took that to the streets, just like they do with their race wars when they get out. It's thuggish wannabe bullshit, and if the poor cops in broken, dilapidated Flint think that is a good starting point for taking their city back, they're probably right. The ACLU should take some advice from Soulja Boy's recent comeback to Ice-T… if you don't like it, get out there and start a day-program for kids, or a summer camp for teens and SHOW them a better way. Otherwise, you're all talk, and nobody's asking for your opinion.

    106

Actually, sagging didn't start as hand-me-downs that were "too big" … they started with the gang-bangers so they could hide weapons, drugs, etc. (kind of hard to conceal a shotgun down the leg of a pair of levi's).

WTF. Are these people bored or just plain crazy? What is up with Flint Michigan? I personally would not wear saggy, baggy or whatever it is called pants. Who am I to tell you what you can and cannot do with your style. This is America people. There are worst things in this country to worry about like say the price of gas or food. and worst of all the senseless War. LIGHTIN THE FUCK UP.

    2. I'm from Flint and now work at an inner-city school in Memphis. Baggy pants did not begin with hand me downs it began in California prisons. How low you wore (wear) your pants was (is) an indication of how far you would go sexually. My students all have belts, but still choose to wear their pants around their knees. Maybe more people would have jobs in Flint if they learned to dress professionally. I agree that legal action is a little extreme, but if you dress like a thug you'll always be a thug…..and as much as our society would like to glamorize thuggery, it's only middle class white kids who are actually buying the music these criminals (DMX, Little Wayne, T.I. their records speak volumes) produce…..until we stop making excuses for all people we will never progress. It's no one's right to have their ass hanging out….regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status. I cannot tell you how much time is wasted reinvesting students in what is actually important and imperative after a young man's pants fall down and they expose themselves….it happens every day, every hour……we have to take responsibility……if we don't all contribute positively to society in some way we're going to be in even more serious trouble. You think the economy is bad now……just wait until everyone is dependent.

I'm not even in an area like Detroit where this would be expected. As a woman, I found it disrespectful to be forced to look at some "man's" (little boy, actually) underwear. The kid couldn't even move around effectively. Fortunately, I had a school uniform/dress code on my side.

So i just read all the posts and the second update is halfway true. I work at a residential treatment facility for ajudicated youth, and I have lived in Michigan my entire life. The habit of sagging your pants did originate in the jails. The juvenile judges here are quick to point out that sagging your pants in the clink means you are willing to be a bottom. if you know what i mean. but sagging in jail definitely meant you were down for a lil man lovin

yes. well, can we cite people for spitting in public, first? and then, rather than making them pull up their silly pants, can we require them to carry a cushion or something, so they have that between the underpants and public seats (benches, trains, et cetera)? those in short skirts should have to do this, too. and if there's a fine, please fine girls showing off their underwear, too. i'd be sad to see sagging stop, myself. such comedy. the waddling walk, and good gravy, the RUNNING. hilarious! i admit, i had to wear PLENTY of hand-me-downs that were way too big, but never once did i belt a pair of pants beneath my rear.

thanks to update #2 for bringing it back to 2008….lets all be very realistic about this issue…I come from the lower class and received hand me downs from an older sibling and I was never sagging my pants and wearing shirts 5 times bigger than my frame…this style is SOLD in department stores this way…you can not tell me these people are not getting any money from anywhere and actually took a shirt and pants from a big fat guy and is now wearing it around…what is the rapper's excuse shown in the picture above? rediculous - it is to concele weapons, drugs, etc. GET REAL!!!!! I find it funny that people complain about the violence, drugs, etc. and yet when someone cracks down on some of the roots of the problem everyone starts talking about violations of the constitution and lawsuits….you are either part of the solution or part of the problem…WAKE UP!!!!!!!

I find it quite sad this is even a news item. Saggers???? OMG… and just for the record, I despise looking at the disgusting ass crack of some loser who can't even think enough of themselves to be wearing such a moronic symbol of anything!! Whether it be from a prison mission or some handmedowns culture.. who gives a shit! IT'S RETARDED LOOKING number one and number two, the only thing that is getting expressed is that YOUR A FOLLOWER OF ALL THINGS STUPID!!! They should just fine them, no need to waste any more of the tax payers money than that…

    121

Thank you for putting up the second "update," but there is still more corrections. Prisoners are not given large pants on purpose — would they really want them to sag so they could hide things? But it is true they cannot have belts. Most of the pants are pretty neutral in a way where they should fit if you are in a certain weight range, it just happens that when issued SOME not all will eventually get their hands on the bigger clothing to conceal things. I think everyone is making huge stereotypes of prisoners. This information I got from my sociology class about urban trends. Others on the other hand I think need to work on citing their sources. I can get you the name of my book if you would like. But I think putting up "updates" of "facts" people apparently know is naive on your part.

I thought "the sag" started within the skating community. My skater friends wore huge pants so they could supposedly maneuver better in them rather than having resort to uncool sweatpants, etc. (This in in the days before it was cool to wear athletic training gear as regular attire). Then, a year or so later, everybody's pants were sagging.

one a secondary note, women would be charged with indecent exposure if they were wearing pants that low, so this "saggies" law is really just making men have to deal with the same stupid bullshit women deal with.
personally, i think it makes you look like a freak, but it shouldn't be illegal, come on.

  27. UPDAT says – reply to this

    127

The trend actuallty stems from prisoners who were willing to give up the goods. They would were their pants saggy as an indication that they were either homosexual or bisexual (at least while locked up). There was actually a documentary about prison life, where an old timer talks about how he loves that the young men sag there pants so often now and if he wants there booty he will get it. You will find that alot of young men who know this, refuse to sag there pants. Young kids are so misinformed. Not to put down homosexuals, but if some of these kids knew where it really originated, they might not do it.

This is complete rubbish, no doubt written by some white suburban kid who thinks he is championing the cause of blacks. Most of you are too young to remember that the baggy pants look was IMMEDIATELY preceded in urban areas by tight, skinny, creased jeans (see footage from early RUN DMC). The baggy look was nothing more than an abrupt change that allowed white retailers to reinvent its market (EXACTLY the same as the planned obsolescence in sales of cars, electronics, etc.). Urban Blacks spend an inordinate amount of their income on clothes, and Black youth are particularly susceptible to brainlessly following trends (remember things like the 8-ball jackets that blanketed black neighborhoods in the 80's and 90's?). As for freedom of expression, the right of such expression is tempered by laws against indecent exposure. Having to look at a grown man's ass hanging out of his pants surely qualifies as such.

I have seen this in NYC for awhile and it seems to becoming a bigger trend. It is absolutely disgusting. I have recently spotted a couple gay guys (black) doing this and it makes sense - they want people to have quick access to their asses just like girls who wear short skirts want guys or have quick access to their asses. But why would a bunch of straight ghetto boys want people staring at their asses through a thin layer of worn cotton? I am ready to puke, it is indecent exposure. Yes people have been wearing there pants low for decades now and I thought it was lame when people showed their Calvin waist bands, but the new trend is completely obscene. As people in our society have been getting fatter with each generation, hand me downs would tend to be tight not sag. These fucking losers will never get a job. Plus I can only imagine the smell.

Uh no that reader has it wrong and I’m guessing they are white. That style came from when black men were in prison and didn’t have belts so their clothing would sag and when they came out they kept with the style. All the laws now about arresting people for sagging pants is absolutely and utterly ridiculous and another attempt to keep black men locked up as this is a prominent fashion statement in the African American community! Why not arrest the punk losers who wear these tight ass skinny jeans? When we can see their nuts and all that? How about that? Oh it will never happen because it’s a white man thing! White people are the devils! White people should be more concerned with why pedophiles are being released back into the community and all they have to do is register as a sex offender! Like being registered will stop them from doing something to another child instead of worrying about how black boys wear their clothes! This is totally stupid! What next? Arresting men for dressing like women? Oh no because then all those politicians will be arrested!

I majored (and graduated with a degree) in Criminal Justice. In SEVERAL of my books and in most of my classes that I took in which class, race, and gender were topics, it was given as fact that the sagging pants trend may not have started this way, but is popularly utilized among inmates as a signal that they are "available" for sexual relations. And this trend was among all races of males. I live in a prison-flooded state which meant that oftentimes our classes would be fortunate enough to have criminal law professionals visit.
I also heard this little fun fact a few times from some of these speakers as well. So for at least in my area, it is kind of a disgrace to wear your jeans with your underwear hanging out, because many think it has sexual connotations. Interesting?

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. This is just another excuse by African Americans to say "hey, look at me". It's lazy. Pure and simple. Even Ellie Mae Clampett and Jethro could afford rope. Pull them up or stay home or FACE THE CONSEQUENCES.

i have lived in the Flint area my whole life…..even better is that we just laid off aprox. 46 police officers and are having to close the city jail due to financial issues. seeing as how Flint was voted the 3rd most dangerous city in the nation its nice to know that our law enforcement will be focusing on sagging pants rather than all the shootings and thefts that plague our city!

I've been told the look started in prison, as means for advertisement, to fellow inmates that you were "available". Although, I find it to be hypocrisy at its finest. Straight men find prison homosexuality to be an oxymoron, right? So, advertising your goods by sagging your pants is a masculine way, an unspoken way of saying you like your hotdog between the buns is acceptable as long as you aren't otherwise visually (stereotypically-snap-yo-fingers gay)?? Pretty asinine, to say the least. You are willing to beat and degrade a gay man because he is not masculine enough; however, you sag your pants and are thus admitting yourself to be homosexual . . .WTF?? You can't be gay and straight you pants sagging pricks BUT you can be gay and masculine!

Besides, all of the gay men I know don't sag their pants (have impeccable taste & hygiene, by the way); fit no stereotype of being gay, and have NEVER been to prison. They fit no title . . .they are attractive, intelligent, and highly successful men who (unfortunately, and to my chagrin) love other men. So since when did accusations of being attractive, intelligent, tidy, and highly successful (most gay men) become a "put down"??

Flipping Idiots! Go sag your pants . . . closet freaks!

Absolute BS. This does not stem from poor kids hand me downs. This "fashion trend" comes from prison, where wearing your pants 'down and low' is a signal that you are a 'bottom' and looking for a 'top'. Rappers have for years tried to justify this look as a trend from the streets. take it from someone who knows where this comes from. do some research, ask an inmate. this is a from prison and nowhere else. The hip hop and rap communities never realized how stupid they were to anyone who knows where this came from. face it folks, to anyone who knows, pants on the "low down", and yes that is where the phrase comes from too, is a sign your a bottom boi looking for a top!

okay i am not a fan of the sag myself. I am actually really truned off by it. But in defense of the saggers, how in the hell do the police and the lawmakers in Flint Michigan plan to prove that sagging your jeans is probably casue for searching the sagger. Watch an see the shit they find that gets thrown out of court at the Appellate Division.

P.S. And for the racists, WHITE BOYS DO THE SAME THING

We have this law near my home town, Riviera Beach, FL. I believe its very offensive that they have their underwear showing that much, sometimes its their entire ass showing. Also, think of women who do not wear bras and you can clearly see thier ta-tas, shouldn't they also receive a ticket? This law opens up too many other issues that they can't possibly outline.

ps- Perez rocks, go on with your sexy self

  85. 185

actually its not a nod to being poor and having to wear handmedowns its a nod to prison life. wearing saggy pants with your ass showing is what inmates did to let others know they were intrested or aka wanting to take it in the butt soo what is this really saying about our youth in america once again uneducated

Yes, this is "The Land of the Free", but you also have to have RULES. People can't just walk around naked, and it irks me when I see these idiots literally holding their pants up. My young daughters do not need to see men's underwear. It's disgusting and they look ridiculous. Not to mention, the whole trend comes from prison and it being a "signal" that they are willing to be someone's "friend". F*cking idiots. Have some repsect for yourselves and PULL YOUR PANTS UP!!!!

What is it about these kids thinking anything related to prison stuff is "cool"?
What the heck do these boogers know? This is what happens when kids don't grow up having a decent parent as their role model. They have no one else to look up to. I think there should be a mandatory field trip to a prison for these middle school kids and let's see if they still want to let their pants sag after that!

Ok look up Fleece on you tube. He is a long time prisoner that they filmed for the show Locked Up. He talks about "getting booty" in prison and how the younger males look good with their saggy pants and that makes the older males want to get "booty" from them and they will get it.
I say keep your pants up!
