Cops in Flint, Michigan are literally playing fashion police!

According to reports, the city's new chief of police has ordered his officers to start arresting saggers*.

Saggers could face jail time and hefty fines for a fad he calls "immoral self expression."

He later told a local paper the style could give officers probable cause to search saggers.

WTF?

Flint is in America!

We still have some freedom of expression rights in our country, don't we?

Michael Moore, what's your hometown thinking?

No worries…the ACLU is on the case. They've threatened to take the Flint cops to court if they insist on citing peeps for sagging.

*Saggers = fans of wearing their pants low - very low!

Update: A reader points out something very interesting.

"Although I'm not a fan of the baggy jeans look, most folks don't know that the whole look didn't start as a fashion statement, but because poor kids always had to wear hand me down clothing …so in the hood, everyone was wearing pants, shirts and shoes that were way too big for them. The look is a nod to that …and when folks challenge that, it's often because they don't understand the context."

Update #2: Inneresting.

Another reader offers a different take on things.

"On the posting about the new saggy pants citations in Mich you have an update from a reader who points out the tradition stems from poor kids wearing hand-me-down clothes. This is not true. It stems from the fact that when in prison, prisoners aren't allowed to have belts, so their prison issue pants often sag very low. The style of saggy pants was brought to the street as a show of toughness associated with the prison/gangster lifestyle. And the citations aren't really about freedom of expression. One of the main reasons saggy pants are being banned in many places (including in many schools) is because it makes it easier to conceal guns."

Update #3:

You guys are so smart!

Another reader points out an interesting hypothesis, " just an update, they are STRUGGLING in michigan and they are trying to find some way to make money, especiallllly oakland county. that's why they're enforcing this."

OMG they should do the same thing on NY. Seriously I never understood this fashion. Guys ( and some girls) look like they have pounds on sh*% in their pants causing them to have the waist on their f&*k%#g knees and they use a belt to hold it in place ( i swear i have seen ppl wearing them dat low). whats worse they walk around public places whre there are kids who then try to immitate them and we the parents have to fight with them over it.
i dont have a problem with pants being baggy or whatever, but dont be showing people your underwear especially if you havent changed it for a couple of days.
as to the comment that it came from the getthos, please im sure they at least had a rope or a cord to hold the pants in place!!!!!!!!

On second look . . . even zexier! Paris Hilton doesn't go to this much trouble coordinating her outfits. Red cap coordinates well with red hints in tatoo that draws attention to his thong line and down to the red bandanna trailing from his obviously brand spanking new, freshly pressed b-jeans ; > )

Prison tat tear drawn beneath his left eye, deceptively indicates that he killed someone in the joint (never happened, con's don't press their brand new designer jeans), but for good measure, a lightening bolt between his carefully tweezed brows . . . dude . . .nice touch!

Gotta say though, the oversized cap makes you like like you have a shrunken head.

Also, about the man jewelery . . . well, 'nuf said.

Early tomorrow, as you crawl out of bed ahead of your day as a latte slinger at Starbucks, you're probably regret that you used indellable ink.

If update #2 is correct, and the ban on baggy pants is a safety measure, then they should ban all clothing that could be a means of concealing a weapon: no more trench coats or oversized handbags either. There is an endless assortment of clothing that COULD be used to hide a weapon, so this excuse is lame. And if their reasoning is valid, their focus shouldn't be limited to only "saggers."

Michigan is struggling right now, and things don't look like they're getting better any time soon. However, how does Flint expect to make any money off of citations on poor inner city kids? It's not about weapons, it's about discrimination. I think sagging looks stupid, but so do tools who wear their hats sideways, daisy dukes, most halter tops, I could go on and on. Fashion is not the place for police!!!!

I live in a city which is FILLED with kids and growup men walking around with their pants like this. Me and my friends are planning on going around and pulling down their pants!! SERIOUSLY!! That is what these guys are asking for!!

If you want me to see your underpants, why just give me a glimpse, might as well take them off completely!
I think they look horrible and I wouldn't mind them arresting them or doing something to change this "habit" of theirs.

It's too bad these suckers don't realize how this "fashion" first started.

Like other commenters have already said, it started in prisons where males who wanted to make themselves, "available" if you know what I mean, to other male prisoners, would sag their pants down…

Gives a whole new meaning to the "punk" fashion statement!

  18. Jay says – reply to this

    218

#2 is somewhat along the right line. It did start in prison, however, the men who wore their pants like that was to let others know that they were gay. That's how the gay men would hook up in prison. And yes, this is a fact.

DUMB. First of all Flint isnt even in Oakland county it is 40 minutes north. Second of all my uncle did time in the 80s and said the guys who "sagged" their pants in prison were the homosexuals to let people know they were "availible". Third of all how much money do you honestly think they will make off this. Michigan is economically screwed this will not bring $ to our depressed state.

  21. Janet says – reply to this

WTF is the point in wearing a belt with your jeans anyway when you are going to wear them half off your ass? All you wind up doing is looking ridiculous while wasting your time trying to keep them up as you walk. yeah now thats attractive.

Perez, unfortunately Flint isn't the only city enforcing this type of law. There are many cities across our country that have passed these laws in the last few years. I live in one of them, Port Allen, LA. I'm not a fan of the style really, however, when I found out my city was going to pass the ordinance, my partner and I went to the meeting (we were the only citizens in our town there!!!) to contest it based on freedom of expression and because it could be seen as a racial issue. We were almost in tears as even though half of them agreed with our arguments, too many 'other' people had called their offices in favor of the ordinance. BOOO!! Now we literally have fashion police… sad what our government is heading toward.

    Thanks - Donnierae

    A) Flint is in Genessee county, not Oakland.

I doubt they have the man-power to fine people for this sort of thing considering the other crime that goes on in Flint.

    243

Also, folks've tried to pass this law before (I believe Atlanta was one of the many places who've considered outlawing sagging) and failed. Why? Because from the eyes of the Law Enforcement world, sagging is actually -good-.

Have you ever tried to chase a sagger down for arrest? It's generally pretty easy to do. They're too busy trying to keep their pants UP in order to actually run away.

  44. The W says – reply to this

    244

Perez; take it from the large number of readers who know this trend adopted by rappers as a supposed sign of toughness is anything but (no pun intended.) This is from the prison population to signal they are 'Bottoms' looking for 'tops'. this is also where the phrase "on the down low" comes from, as inmates who wear their pants 'down and low' do so as a signal they are cruising gay sex.

  45. Not a says – reply to this

    245

On your updates Perez #1 was way off base, #2 was partially correct and #3 was just voicing his opinion. Back to update #2 yes the pants sagging did come from the prison streets but they have prison issued belts that they can wear with the pants. The pants sagging in prison means that you are ready and willing to perform or have sexual favors performed on you while you are there. If your pants are sagging it means that you are ready. When it hit the streets, it was taken out of context. No offense but there are so many artist that have been to prison that sag they dont have a girl if you know what I mean. It's sad that young people look up to these individuals when they have no clue to someones personal life and all they say is their job. Because thats how most entertainers look at things, it 's their job to entertain.

Get your facts straight, just like Perez :D

  49. asdf says – reply to this

    249

I just wanted to make the distintion that Flint is NOT part of Oakland County. Flint is an embarassment to Michigan and as of 2007 was the 3rd most dangerous city in America.

  50. Renee says – reply to this

    250

Perez, I have read the previous two comments from readers trying to explain the origins of sagging. The first is wrong and the second does point out some truth that sagging does manifest from the prison system. However, the truth is that sagging was and is a symbol of homosexuality. In prison many men who wanted to make themselves available to other inmates would sag their pants in order to invite other men. The fact that many now choose to sag is the perception that it is "cool" or that they are tough; however many are ignorant to the fact that it is tied to homosexuality.

  51. Amy says – reply to this

    251

Just a thought, but why are they punishing people 10 years after the height of this fashion statement? It's not exactly a huge problem right now. I don't see mass herds of people in baggy pants walking around.

  52. Dan says – reply to this

    252

First of all, Flint isn't in Oakland County. It's in Genessee County. For many years now it's been known the saggy pants fashion trend came from the prisons. I can understand why the chief would be pissed. Some of that is just really unacceptable with the fuckin pants at the knees. Atleast cover half of your ass and if you're going to let your pants hang down like that, wear a long enough shirt.

"Another reader points out an interesting hypothesis, 'just an update, they are STRUGGLING in michigan and they are trying to find some way to make money, especiallllly oakland county. that's why they're enforcing this.' "

Flint IS NOT in Oakland County. Oakland County is one of the richest area's in the state of Michigan! LOL
As for the topic; has anyone ever been to Flint?! It is a scary city that has a terrible gang/crime rate. It used to be a nice city, and unfortunately, in the past few years it has gone completely down hill. While I am not one for telling people what they can or can't wear, maybe they enforced this law because they need to look into other ways to help deter young children in the community from idolizing the local gang activity.
I personally do not live in Flint, just go there frequently for work, and I can't even begin to tell you how many times I can hear gun shots in the distance. Thats a bit scary considering the fact that Flint isn't THAT big. Just my thoughts though, some people may beg to differ…

What Flint Michigan really needs, is real jobs. Not laws regulating people’s choices in attire. Re: SMH!

    SMH

More than likely "sagging" was a trend started by the industry. However, just the idea that it may have started within prison further reinforces why black/ghetto culture is seen by other races as savage and void of value.

Comparing cross-dressing to indecent exposure shows your intellect is on par with that of a retarded baboon.

But then that is the issue that is up for debate. Is this indecent exposure?

More than likely the goons embracing this arrested fashion development are guilty of other crimes and, if this is what it takes to these goon negros and wiggers locked up, so be it. I am sure the hardworking citizens in that area will breath a sigh of relief once their streets are safe again.

  75. anna says – reply to this

I live next to Flint, Michigan, and let me tell you the city is a big crap whole. It's dirty and nasty and the reason they filmed semi-pro there is probably because the whole city still looks like its from the 1970's. I think anything Flint can do is a plus, including having people pulling up there pants. It would at least add one nice thing to the dirty city.

First off, Michael Moore is NOT from Flint. He's from a very well off, mostly white suburb of Flint. However, I am from Flint and I don't live there anymore (I'm one of the lucky ones!) but I can see why the cops would be doing this. It may not be the best idea (we're not known for having a lot of those) but for them, I'm sure it's a start in trying to break down on crime. It's just absurd there. GM left and on the way out they said "fuck you hard-working people!" and since then, no one has bothered to truly help. However, there has GOT to be a better way to lower crime!

I agree with the police on this. In todays day, most people(READ NOT ALL!) with low jeans are gang bangers or drug dealers/users. The people wearing that shit today don't care about the "tradition" of hand me downs. Hell, rappers who make millions and can afford pants that fit, still buy the baggy shit. I say good riddance. And while they're at it, make school uniforms mandatory!

umm, Flint is in Genesee county, NOT oakland county. and they're not just giving out tickets to people who have saggy pants, they're giving them to people who have their CRACK exposed.

I FIND IT OFFENSIVE THAT WHITE BOYS WALK AROUND WITH TIGHT ASS JEANS ON WITH FLIP FLOPS WTF IS THAT ABOUT

Just FYI to update 3. Flint is in Genesee County, not Oakland County. Oakland County is one of the richest counties in the country. Obviously, Flint (and Genesee County) are not.

none of those comments about why they sag their jeans are true. In jail sagging pants are a way to advertise what you want to do sexually. If your pants are half way down that means you're virgin booty but you want or are considering letting someone claim you. If your pants are all the way sagging off your butt that means you take it in the butt all the time. If these boys only knew the real meaning they might not think it's so cool.

update #3 doesn't make complete sense. i live in oakland county, michigan and although it is true that michigan's economy is struggling oakland county is still one of the wealthiest counties in the united states. and flint isn't even in oakland county or even near oakland county for that matter. flint is one of the most dangerous cities in the united states though so if it is true that this law was to make it harder to conceal a gun, it makes some sense. i still think its unconstitutional though.

Too bad Flint is NOT is Oakland County. It's in Genessee. They are struggling there as well, but we can still get the facts straight.

The reader who stated the saggy pants look started in jail is correct by the way. That is exactly how the fad started. I would also like to point out that about 4 or so months ago, here in Miami, where I live, they passed a city ordinance in Opa Locka stating the police could search and cite saggers.

I think that the baggy pants is not the very best look. What that says about yourself?Under all of that bagginess is probably scrawny legs.Down in one of the parishes in Louisiana, they charge you a fine for having your pants hanging.I do not want to see their butts.

worst fashion statement.Like they're wannabe thugs

As a person that lives in Oakland County that person who was quoting that Oakland County is desperate for money is FULL OF CRAP! Michigan is in dire need of cash but Oakland County is one of the richest counties in the country. The reason people are getting sited is obvious: INDECENT EXPOSURE! It's not a fashion statement when your boxers and full bum are showing out of your pants. It's a definite access point towards a slippery slope of what we think "exposure" means. Today exposure is the back of your butt and boxers showing. Tomorrow who knows?

i think that its not only gross, but disrespectful to society and also…looks very very unconfortable !!!
whenever u see a black guy wearing a hideous outfit like this one, they are always pulling their pants up its soo lame
anyway, Im reaally happy they are getting arrested
matter of fact, im gonna start calling 911..it would be fashion police at last lol

    295

Screw all that. Whatever the reason, it's tacky and disgusting. No one wants to see your ass no matter where you're from and how tough you had it. Pants look fine on your hips. When the belt is holding your pants up around your thighs, I hope you DO get arrested! And fined! I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR ASS!!

    A) Freedom of expression, you guys. It's why you can even comment on this.

    B) If these guys stop wearing sagging pants, how will you haters know who to hate? Plus, the ignorant people will no longer look ignorant so how will you know who's ignorant? Hint: Its you, for judging without knowing.

ugh…i'm from burton,MI which is pretty much in flint and I have to say that this is the LEAST of flint's problems. Being the number 3 most dangerous city in the US was not accomplished by having too many sagging pants wearers. I think that this new police chief is lazy and will do flint more harm than good.

saggers do come from prison fashion history, but it was also a way for certain perps to advertise they were available for romantic ncounters, as well as the one pulled up leg.

i live in in flint and the cops should be worried about more important things, like the fact that flint, michigan is #3 dangerous city!! they should come up with better drug laws and not worry about how someone looks, this is the US after all.

It's about fucking time there was some dress code enforced. This whole country is getting to look like the set of a fucking porno. I don't want to see some skanks boobs all hanging out of their outrageously low-cut tops and I certainly don't need to be seeing anyone's cunt or crack hanging out of way too low pants or high skirt. If some losers don't have a sense of morals or decency (or decent fashion sense) then the law should enforce it for those of us who do so we don't have to be offended by lowlifes.
