Cops in Flint, Michigan are literally playing fashion police!
According to reports, the city's new chief of police has ordered his officers to start arresting saggers*.
Saggers could face jail time and hefty fines for a fad he calls "immoral self expression."
He later told a local paper the style could give officers probable cause to search saggers.
WTF?
Flint is in America!
We still have some freedom of expression rights in our country, don't we?

I think its a great idea. When I do have to travel through Flint with you 3 children, I do not want to see that. Some of these young kids do not wear underwear. But I do have to ask, if saggy pants are being outlawed, why aren't lowcut shirts with no bras? That's just as offensive to me.

I live in Flint.. I'm a middle class white married woman with a family. This is the FIRST I've heard of this new 'law'. But… I think it sounds pretty great. You would not believe the people I see with pants like that outside my front window. It's pretty crazy. Although I dont think it's going to "crack down on the crime" … I do think it could get some punks off the streets?! But like the one lady from Flint said… the cops really have more to do than this, it won't be enforced, I'm sure of it. It would be nice to think so though.
BTW, people in Flint that are getting shot are usually involved in some type of drug spree and things of that sort. Us 'un-involved' people who live in Flint only get our cars gone through in the middle of the night, might as well just leave your doors unlocked… considering if you don't they will break them and then you gotta bigger issue! Oakland County is about 45 minutes away from Flint and is also known as one of the wealthiest counties not only in Michigan but the entire country. Flint is most definitely not in Oakland County.
Flint isn't even near Detroit, for those who are confused. But yes, Flint's families and communities suffer historically from disproportionately low socioeconomic status.
I'm not sure why sagging pants are being targeted, but I'm sure it's just yet another thinly-veiled attempt from the police to harass and punish young black men in the area.

Flint is extremely depressed right now, has extremely high crime rates, and has no bright future in sight; the police department needs to find a way to make money, I'm sure. The claim that baggy pants makes it easier to conceal guns is just a BS excuse for them to make a law that allows them to search black people and "gangster" looking dudes without probable cause. You can easily stick a gun in the waistband of a pair of regular-fitting jeans. Or with a long shirt, or a puffy jacket. The real scary thing about this law isn't that they'll cite people for "sagging," but rather that they are allowing sagging to give cops probable cause to search people for no other reason. It's basically racial/class profiling, which will let police suspect people not because of their behavior but because they are a certain "type" of person. I am pretty confident this law won't hold up for long, especially the probable cause part of it. I hope the NAACP, ACLU or whoever else will sick their lawyers on it quick!

Flint is not part of Oakland County, and yes Michigan is in a huge recession. However that does not make it okay to challenge anyone's freedom of expression. It's called discrimination, and it's not an acceptable behavior, regardless of the situation. What about big purses? You could have all sorts of weapons concealed in them, and I don't hear about cops possibly arresting women carrying them.

Honestly, speaking as a mother of three boys, and a sister to 4 boys, I agree that somebody needs to crack down on the showing of dingy underwear by boys and men. Especially grown men. There are many, many cities in the U.S. that have ordinances against sagging pants. But let's clarify that it is not just against the "prison look." It also applies to girls who wear pants cut so low their thong or bare bottom is showing. No one has jobs (including my mother, a college graduate) and the crime is very high. Think if compton was put in the middle of America, away from a large city. No hope man, no hope.

Flint (Semi-Pro anyone), 2nd highest in unemployment, 3rd in violent crime, is in the center of Genessee county, not Oakland county. While the cops are trying to play fashion police, it is because many people in this town wearing droopy draws, are packing not so droopy handguns and drugs. I know. I live here. Michigan is in no much trouble economically that counties are doing anything and everything they can to make money for their cities. The population of Michigan, from Detroit to FLint is a mixture of all different types of clutures and races. When we start telling people how they can and cannot dress, that's when our freedom and rights will begin to be questioned. This is going to cause allot of problems. I am pretty sure that this has been made illegal (at certain times) in Baltimore and NYC too over the years. Having baggy/saggy (too big) pants is a way for kids to conceal weapons and when there is a huge crime problem going on in a city they put this rule into effect so that the police (and citizens) can be a little safer and so that the police know who may be more of a threat.

Jail for legal and "watch there own asses" reasons have to remove all belts, shoelaces, chains basically anything in which the inmate can hang themselfs. This then became looked at as a sign of how hood you really are. ( you faced time so now you got some cred) Point in tail once this fad got big back in the early 90's, they felt they had to one up it by getting facial tatts as a sign of why there there ie a tear drop for each taken life.

First of all, if men have to pick up there baggy pants then at least 2 inches should be forced onto the bottom of every teen girls mini skirt in America. I personally would rather see boxers then a girls panties. I digress… I recently read a very reputable article that specifically stated that the origin of "sagging" came from prisoners. They would or were forced at times to wear jeans hanging low "sagging" due to the fact that they could not buy or wear belts in the prison system. This then became popular in the prison systems and ex-convicts brought it to the streets where kids and young adults alike picked it up and made it popular. So I guess what I'm saying is pick up your pants and lengthen your skirts young ones of America and have some damn respect for yourself.!

My dad works in a men's correctional facility and the real reason inmates wear their pants to low is to show how "available" they are to other prisoners. The lower the pants, the more you're looking for some action.

Who the hell said Flint was in Oakland County and that Oakland County is struggling? Flint is in Genesee county which is far north of Oakland. Yes, Michigan in general is struggling, but as it's wealthiest county, Oakland is one of the few areas that actually seems to be able to keep its head about water. Michigan is so rough right now because, being the car capital of the US, oil prices are slowing factory production. Oakland is mostly white-collar business… so they aren't feeling the gas price wrath as strongly.
Just in response to "Update 3": Flint isn't in Oakland county. Oakland county is an extremely wealthy area per capita, whereas Flint is one of the most dangerous and poorest cities in the United States for its population.

I find it difficult to believe "Update #2." As a nurse at a state prison in Michigan, I know for a fact that we outfit our prisoners with clothes that are of the appropriate size. There are safety factors, for the staff and the inmates, at play that necessitate the provision of appropriately sized clothing.

Oakland county is NOT struggling for money. I am from there and Oakland county is the 3rd richest county in the UNited States. Flint is 45 minutes north of OC. Michigan is in shambles and crime is getting worse everyday. We are just looking for a way to prevent violence, specially among young people. I am not for or against the law, but I do understand where both sides are coming from. If you live here you would understand too. Michigan is so far out of the realm of the U.S right now you have no idea. No jobs, no money, no public transportation. This is the least of our worries.
