On The N Word

Filed under: TV News > Elizabitch Hasselbeck > Whoopi Goldberg

wenn1981176.jpg

As you recall from last week, Elizabitch Hasselbeck got very emotional during a debate with Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepard over the use of the controversial N word on The View.

Hasselbeck insisted that the word should not be used to describe anyone or be used by anyone. Whoopi took the position of many stating that only members of the black community are entitled to use the word.

Now steps in actor Taye Diggs, who has his own opinion about the situation and about Hasselbeck.

Diggs says Hasselbeck "doesn’t understand, and, no offense — I don’t think any white person has the right to tell a black person or to even weigh in on subject matter such as that. They don’t know what it’s like to be called that word; they don’t know what it’s like to be black.”

Diggs continued, “They can have an opinion, but… don’t take a word that you created and called me for many, many years, and then me being in my position, have the strength to change what it means in my own culture. Don’t try to take it back now. Now it’s ours. Leave it alone.”

What do U think?

Should everyone stop using that word? Or should it be allowed to be used by only some people?

I think it's a tough argument but I really don't think that black people use it in a harsh manner…. For example… being a lesbian myself I get extremely pissed off if someone calls me a dyke. Around my gay friends though… we throw dyke and fag around like nothing. Its almost like your turning it around and making the word mean nothing so that when and if your called it…you can handle it the situation better.

So you've changed the meaning… fine… let whites use it under the "new" definition.

Racial eqaulity means either we ALL get to use it, or no one does. Continued use by one race only creates more confusion about what's right or wrong by the other.

I agree with Diggs. I mean, just stop trying to figure the word out…leave it alone. There are plenty of colloquial words used within other cultures that are not topping the headlines and generating all this buzz. I agree–leave it alone. Whites are just obsessed with the "N" word…sorry to say…and not being racist…but it's true. Blacks have taken a derogatory word, used against them for many years, and tranferred the meaning into something that should only be used within the black community. Sure, it doesn't always have a positive meaning, but so what…all words can have a positive and negative meaning depending on how you use them. But, Whites should just get a new word to obsess over.

Good for Taye! All people commenting on this post that are Caucasian, just learn to shut the fuck up for once. It's obvious that you feel like you should be able to post some anonymous post about how blacks need to "UNDERSTAND" If this was a forum you wouldn't be saying any of this shit cause you know what your saying is complete racist bullshit. I CAN'T wait for Obama to be President so we can start to erase all the hate! Peace and RESPECT to all.

The use of the word is negative by blacks and whites both. NOBODY should use the word. Black people continue to battle against a prejudice culture and yet they continue to demand segregation. If they are the only ones allowed to use the word, then ONCE AGAIN they are creating the prejudism they whine and fight with all the time. NOBODY should use it.

    109

I really think you can compare it to the "c-word". I get offended when someone says that word to me or when I hear it - no matter who says it. So if a black person finds it offensive to be called the "n-word" then they have every right. And if we're all in the safety of our own homes and a joke is made with that derogatory term and we're fine with it, then that is our decision. You can't "ban" a word. You can just show compassion and remorse for others and maybe - just maybe - treat them with the respect they deserve and don't use ANY derogatory terms!

During their big debate, Whoopi said that a child would not go up to Elizabeth's child and use the N word… but that's not true. Because it is used by adults, kids pick up on it. My son's neighborhood pal recently said goodbye by saying "Peace, N*". Sure, he's black, he can own that word, right? But what happens if my white son repeats it? Then it's wrong, according to Taye's theory. Using the word perpetuates using the word. If you don't want to hear it, don't use it and don't encourage it's use.

I'm sick of blacks using oppression as an excuse to bitch about everything. Lots of people had it rough and still do. If you hate the white man so much then go back to Africa, then you'll really know what it's like to be oppressed.

  19. Ness says – reply to this

    119

why is it considered positive and okay for blacks to use it, yet when white people use it even in the same way blacks do its not? And they ALWAYS use the fact we're white as negatives like WHITE TRASH. People seem to think you can't be racist to whites. Racism isn't just against blacks.

and as a lesbian I always here the term gay/queer used in an offence way. like straight people saying it to other straights like its bad. Can you imagine if we called someone black as a way to offend people. the world would go mad. Racism may have happened in the PAST but that's it its THE PAST! look at whats happenin now.

    its either all or nothing.
black people have more rights than white people nowadays and black people are always the ones saying they want everything to be EQUAL.
how is everything supposed to be EQUAL if only certain people can use the word. thats so hypocritical.
ive never been a fan of hasselbeck but i have to agree with her on this one.
HOW DOES ANYONE EVER EXPECT EVERYONE TO BE EQUAL IF ONLY CERTAIN PEOPLE CAN SAY CERTAIN WORDS….THINK ABOUT IT!!!

  27. lw says – reply to this

    127

i think this situation is similar to any group of people who have been oppressed in the past or even present, such as homosexual and bisexual people taking words that were used against them and turning them into a form of empowerment. it's extremely difficult to have an opinion that people are going to listen to if you fall into the majority. people can attempt to have an objective point of view, but they will never understand firsthand and that makes it nearly impossible to have a truly valid opinion in the eyes of the minority.

why is everyone so angry that its inappropriate for them to use a word that another culture can use. what is the big deal? like it or not black people use it. just think of all the things black people weren't allowed to while other did them. give it time, have a n word march and movement, petition the supreme court, get n word rights acts passed and then everyone will be able to use it :)

  29. ?? says – reply to this

    129

no matter what it is a negative word, used by whites or blacks. if they want to be "equal" then they shouldn't have special rights to a certain word that other people can't have

  30. asdf says – reply to this

    130

Who is he to say "a word YOU created and called me for many, many years?" I have never used that word to refer to anyone. Don't blame me, or white people in general, for what people of all colors have done in the past, and that is discriminate. I understand if your grandfather hates my grandfather for something he did, but why are you continuing to blame me for injustices of generations past? I don't think that a double standard is a smart thing to want, it just perpetuates the divide that some are genuinely trying to close.

    132

the word isn't the problem. it's the context in which a person uses it that makes the word 'bad'

what i don't get is why a person saying, 'yo nigga what's good!' gets censored but someone saying, 'you dumb pollack' or 'honky' or 'cracker' or 'spic' doesn't.

i'm mixed, black and white, can i say nigga?

  33. Andre says – reply to this

    133

Well said LizCH! To me it's so hypocritical. Is it a bad word or not?!? No matter who says it, it means the same thing, no matter how much some people try to rationalize the "proper" use of the word. Honestly, the majority of times I have heard a black person calling another black person that word, it wasn't in a friendly tone at all. To me, the excuse that only black people can use the word is absolutely horrifying. Ok, now only white people can use the word redneck! Make sense??? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. sj says – reply to this

    134

i think that black people blow this entire thing way out of proportion. yes i agree that it is rude. but your ancestors were called that during slavery, not you. our ancestors fought in wars and battled the germans for killing jews. you dont see christians and catholics and jews creating media drama that these religions are still being critisized…grow up

  35. Olivi says – reply to this

    135

Wow, so because she appears white her people created the word. Her "people" are Polish and Italian, and probably didn't arrive in America until the early 1900's, and upon their arrival were called racially offensive names. So Taye, (who by the way is married to a white Jewish woman) maybe you should learn to think before you speak.

  36. KELLY says – reply to this

    136

there is an elderly lady in my neighborhood who spent years during the 50s and 60s to fight racism, the use of the n word, & such. blacks and whites alike respect this woman, and i DARE you, I FREAKING DARE you to speak that word to her, being a black person. she would rip you apart and it hurts her even more to hear it from the mouths of the very race she was trying to defend.

  37. kimmy says – reply to this

    137

first off.. why would black people wanna use the term for eachother?
the generations before them fought so hard to surpass that name and
become an individual inside of an organization of people underneath that name.
but another opinion would be since it was their term of name then why not be able to call eachother that? but you cant sit their and say white people cannot say it because one they did create it.. and 2 thats just as racist as as the word.

sayin white people cant say it but black people can? revise racism right there.

and second what really pisses me off as to what tay diggs says " they dont know what its like to be black".. wtf didnt the people our their generations before fought against being black saying " we are all the same color shouldnt mean n e thing" so techincally you are contradictin the whole civil rights movement sayin that people dont know what its like to be black… um hypocriticaly much? i think so.

and also black people today have more opportunity then a white person. i mean look at Barack obama he could be the next fucking president. he is black! you guys have just as much pull in this country as the next person. so saying we dont have n e idea what its like to be black… shut your mouth. black people choose to live the way they live just as much as a white person now a days. but we dont put excuses as our skin color in the matter.

    and i am done

FOR EXAMPLE, IF WHITE PEOPLE WERE TO MAKE A "WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION" BLACK PEOPLE WOULD HAVE A SHIT FIT, BUT THEY CAN HAVE "BET"? RACISM IS GOING THE OTHER WAY TO THE POINT WHERE WHITE PEOPLE ARE BECOMING THE MINORITY, BUT STILL WE CAN'T COMPLAIN OR WE'RE RACIST. I REALLY DON'T BELIEVE THAT THERE IS EVEN MUCH RACISM OUT THERE, BUT PEOPLE HAVE TO TWIST EVERY STATEMENT AROUND SO THAT IT BECOME A RACIST COMMENT. OH, AND WHY IS IT OK THAT BLACK PEOPLE CALL WHITE PEOPLE 'CRACKERS'? SHOULDN'T WE BE CRYING RACISM?

  42. **** says – reply to this

    142

If black people want people to stop using that word than it shouldnt be "every other word" in 50% of the rap songs that come out these days! How many white people have sang along to a hip hop/r&b/rap song and used the word simply because its in the song. When its used that much, it looses its meaning.
You dont here a lot of white people calling themselves "crackers" or "white trash" do you???
And for the record, Im not racist but white people are entitled to their opinion nomatter what TAY DIGGS thinks!

  43. 143

Re: Martic – what does his opinion on the use of the word have to do with him being married to a white actress -?

  44. Jess says – reply to this

    144

I think people just need to let it drop. Black people, white people, yellow, gold. doesnt matter. The whole thing about, "we're taking control" of the word YOU labeled us with is just fueling everything. The entire issue just needs to be dropped. Everyone fought for equality back then and now that they have it they feel they need to be above everyone else now because they were crapped on for so long. The world knows that what happened back then was wrong, yes there are still some people out there who have that mind set but if people would just let the issue drop and stop trying to go either way I think it would eventually just go away. Instead, you have black people trying to take back control and feel they deserve compensation and white people who are trying to give it to them but at the same time feel like it's getting carried away. White people today werent the ones you did all that, just like black people today werent the ones who had to endure it. Stop trying to breathe life into something that people need to pull themselves above on all racial spectrums.

  45. Luna says – reply to this

    145

    Um, Taye?

"Our word?" If we're EQUAL, then when you say "our word" do you mean all people?

Oh, you don't? "Our word" meaning black people? So, you're saying there's a line, a difference, and we're not EQUAL???

You's wantin' to take youssef back to the slave days, boy?

I DID NOT say that word to YOU.
    Ever.
I don't appreciate being told that I as a white women has created that word. I'm sick of being blamed for what happened years ago. I know it may effect some of their older family members and there may still be hurt there, BUT I did not do anything and it's not fair to be labled as if I have.

My people were killed in consintration camps…
It was TERRIBLE and sad and I CARE that it happened…
But I'd never blame anyone in TODAYS world for it.
I know a person who comes from that ethnic background is NOT to blame.
African Americans DID and do at times have it hard.
They are not the only ones.
And they were not the only ones descriminated in America.

i think the fact that we're still caught up in prejudice is ridiculous… hopefully my generation will be able to overcome, unlike those of gen x… we're all equal. let's embrace each other and leave behind loaded terms. just because i am jewish, does not mean you'd EVER here me say to someone "you're such a jew" (meaning that person is cheap), and i would EXPECT that african americans in this country would feel the same about the n word, but that doesn't appear so. i understand they're trying to take back the word, but why not do something bigger and make a new word? but i guess since i'm a white jew, i shouldn't have an opinion about a blatantly offensive term, even though my people have been persecuted for thousands of years and have had stereotypes forced upon them?

  60. Crick says – reply to this

A word is only a word unless there is meaning behind it. So if it is used positively, it shouldn't matter who says it. If it is used negatively, no one should say it.

Why don't we ALL leave painful memories in the past. Drop the word from your vocabulary. I didn't create that word. No one I know did. I don't know anyone who's owned a slave either. And, yes, we "whiteys" have experienced racism, too. We've been called "cracker," "whitebread," whatever. The important thing is, UNTIL WE LEAVE THINGS LIKE THAT IN THE PAST, WE'LL NEVER MOVE BEYOND IT.

  63. peggy says – reply to this

    163

I think that the "only black people can say it" rule is stupid. No one should use it. I doubt any of the black people today have "been called it for years" i know none of them were slaves. I don't think that in a country where white people are the minority should anyone use racial slurs.

  64. Bill says – reply to this

    164

That is a ridiculous comment by Taye Diggs! "I" didn't create that word; biggots and slave owners did hundred of years before my family came to America! Also, it is a horribly offensive word and many white people feel it's O.K. to use it because Black People call each other by it casually. the truth is it shouldn't be used by anyone…

    167

oh god shut UP. No offense, but I find it so obnoxious when black people say that they can only say the n-word and white people can't. If they don't want to be called that then why the fuck do they call each other that? maybe they can get it through there dark skin toned skulls that maybe if you yourselves didn't hype up the word every chance you get in mostly all the music and statements (hellooo jesse jackson) then we wouldn't have to even have discussions like this

  68. harrk says – reply to this

    168

I am white and i don't think anyone should use it because white people aren't going to "leave it alone" and continue use it as a way to insult blacks as long as black people are using the word amongst themselves. Blacks are keeping this term alive and in turn promoting the prejudice and hate they receive from white people. So say as much as you want you're reclaiming the word and changing its meaning after years of oppression, but the fact is your making the n-word part of the white persons vocabulary and no matter what, he/she is going to use that word because there is nothing to stop them.

  69. Racha says – reply to this

    169

I am tired of the black community saying we call them the N word. When will people realize that this is a different generation? We are all being punished by what our grandparents did. The black communities are the ones keeping this word alive and continue to give it a power. No one should use it, only ignorant people.

I hate it when people lump everyone into one group. My family did not own slaves. My family didn't invent the n word. What about all of the white folks who worked so hard to end slavery? Can they use the word because their relatives are black allies? It makes no sense. Like Ben Folds' song "Rockin' the Suburbs"…

I can feel that someone's blasting me with hate,

And bass, sendin dirty vibes my way.

Coz my Great, Great, Great, Great, Grandad,

this guys a douche. i dont think anyone should be bale to use it. I dont agree with this whole compensating for past things that were clearly worng by over compensating in the future the other way.. how about we start actually making things equal. no more advantage. its all bull shit at this point.

I know the word is offensive, i know its wrong to use it… but until people stop being offended by it, then no one is going to stop saying it. If you want the controversy to be done with… then dont react to it.

Is it just me or do some black people preach how much they want to be equal, but then others just want to be different. Why should they be "allowed" to say something that we are not?! I thought everyone was supposed to be equal? We should all be allowed to do or say the same thing. They are just making themselves separate. Just like the Blacks only school in Toronto. They want to be different.. they want to be special. thyy dont want to be equal. (NOT all, just some.)

I think stating something like that is incredibly contradictory, and he doesn't even realize it. That would be like me tell men that they can't call women b*tches and wh*res, only women can call each other that. If you don't want someone to use that term, don't use it yourself. That word came from a hateful and hurtful period in African American history. It's time to grow together as a people, as a country.

And I hate it when I am blamed for hurtful, racist things just because of the color of my skin. I wasn't even born in this country, so how can me and my ancestors be blamed for something we weren't involved in. Don't discriminate against me, and I won't do the same to you. I would never use this word because of how it was created out of hate. And I would expect the same out of the community that is trying to own it. No matter how much you try to turn the word around, people still know what it signifies. Why not create a new word to represent what you're trying to accomplish, a word created of of love, and hope for your culture.

Now i cant stand Hasselbeck, but hello…"don’t take a word that you created and called me for many, many years" ??? when did she create and call him the N word??? if we want to move forward, we have to let go of the past! saying one person can or cant say a word promotes racism on both ends of the spectrum. The only race we as a people should be discussing is the human race! It is stupid to think that white ppl wont say that word, especially if they hear it constantly in the media. One person can do it, but another person of a different race cant??? That is like a segregation of vocabulary for different races. And just plain stupid.

I think the "controversy" is effing ridiculous in it's entirety. There shouldn't be words that some people can say but other can't. I don't use the word in question, but it doesn't offend me to hear it. I treat it like a cuss word at home, which means as an adult I can damn well use it if I want to, but my kids will get smacked if they try to do the same.

Overall I think the majority of people are too sensitive about a whole host of topics and we need to exam where common sense went. We need to be respectful of one another and try to stop being ridiculous.

I can't say anything about nobody and no one, because it makes me a racist. You shoot off at the mouth, and it's "your culture." That's my white card. I dare not even be aware that your skin is a different color, and I'm a hater.

I agree with LizCH. Also, if we've been fighting for so long for equality shouldn't we continue to fight? Again, we're giving one race the right and taking it from another. If the word is so terrible why should anyone want to hear it or use it?

Nobody in our day and age created this word, or still subject people to being slaves. It was created years and years and years and years ago, and now in the present time, for the most part, our society has made a point of it being a disgusting, and unnecessary word. So I don't see why we're still getting shit for this.

For heaven's sake…slavery ended in the 1800s…it's time to move on. I am a white individual and don't judge anyone based on the color of their skin…i judge them on their level of intelligence or stupidity, and the majority of people do the same. It's time that people quit blaming their current problems on an antiquated period in our nation's history. Further more, no one should use the N word, it only represents that period of hatred in American history. Black individuals who choose to use the word water down its meaning, making it only normal that some white people may lose the significance of it and use it as well. The same goes for racial terms for white people. I have been called a kracker more times than i can count by black individuals, but if i were to ever snap back and yell the N word, then they would be furious. So, i don't see the need for anyone to use any racial term whatsoever! after all, those terms are what are keeping us from being a society that doesn't judge based on skin color.

I think it's wrong for black people to say we can't call them that, when they call each other it and use it whenever they want. If it's that bad, why use it at all? They're the ones keeping racism alive. It's all in their heads. A white person kills a black person = racism. What happens when a black person kills a white person?

He is ignorant. If it is such an offensive word, no one should use it. Blacks are being hypocrites. I'm part Mexico, and I wouldn't want to be called a wetback by ANY race!! even another Mexican. It's offensive. They're all like "this is OUR word, white people don't know what we've been through" blah blah blah, get the f over it. lets try to move forward and stop trying to always be victims.

Ok-I dont typically leave comments on this website but this subject is very interesting to me. I have always had this debate with my friends and let me tell you i dont sympatice with Black people as they call themselves. They want to be treated equal but yet they seem to believe that they have a right to use a word and we dont? Honeslty if they disrespect themselves in that way and their suppose tobe of the same race, why cant somebody elsew of any race call them the same thing. Honestly i agree with everyone else they need to stop complaining and feeling liek the whole world owes them something- slavery was over a long time ago and at some point they have to get over it. It jsut ridiculous how everyone wants to use the race card for everything. I think that if they can use the word so should everyone else- If they dont respect themselves enough to stop using the word amond themselves then I dot see why anybody else should stop.

I am a white girl and I hate the N word, I think it is offensive and shouldnt be used at all by any race whether its white, black, red woteva. But wot I dont get is why racism isnt looked at in a two way system. I mean how come I get called milk top by other races or and albino and I find that really offensive and racist against me. I dont think that it is fair at all and any1 who calls me racist doesnt know what they are gong on about because I havent said anything racist in this comment

I think that it is time that white people stand united and say enough is enough. I am tired of this reverse descrimation, black people can say whatever they want about white people and nothing is done about it. It is time to do away with affirmative action, united negro college fund etc. We need to have our own million white man march on washington and take back our rights.
