Why Is This Idiot Still On The Air?

Radio host, homophobe, hate monger Michael Savage has created some scandal with his uneducated comments yet again.

This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."

And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!

Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.

The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”

He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”

As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”

Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.

He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.

John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."

He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”

As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”

At least they're trying to cover their asses.

Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

What do U think?

As the proud mother of 3 beautiful, smart, well behaved children, who by the way are autistic; I invite Mr. Savage to spend an afternoon at my house. He would change his tune quickly. Its always easier to blame someone else. Heck, I blame his mother for living in a trailer and drinking when she was pregnant with him.

    "Homophobe, hate monger…"

Liberals/gays are masters of the ad hominem, aren't they? Why address the subject's statement when you can just attack his character right off the bat?

It's called freedom of speech…Perez makes his living saying outrageous, often hurtful, many times misinformed things - they're cut from the same cloth. Let's get outraged over important things, like Posh's latest outfit or something.

HOw dare you speak on something you have no clue about! My sister in law goes through hell everyday just trying to get him the best help and suffers cause her son suffers. This guy needs to be removed from ever having his opinions broadcasted on air!

What do I think? I think you've got less education than Dr. Savage, Perez. I may not agree with him on everything, but the guy has a lot of education and has written a number of bestselling books.

What's your doctorate in Perez? Or did you even graduate high school?

Your website is a fun read, but you're not very bright.

  23. Caity says – reply to this

    123

This is so ignorant, and its just so sad. My 4 yrd old brother is autistic, he is such a wonderful child. I dont think this man understands what an autistic child is. My brother is in no way "a brat" he is very sensitive, he has problems with things like brushing his teeth because his mouth is oversensitive and to him it hurts. It is hard enough to go to have strangers look at you funny because your child makes noises and cannot speak. This man does not know what it is like to have a child that can't even say "I Love you" and how heartbreaking that is. He has not only my parents who have raised 3 well adjusted children, but also me who lives with him and gives him the most attention ever.

This man should just try spending a day with an autistic child, try talking to a parent or loved one, and then maybe he can form an opinion, but its obvious by his ignorance that he has never even spent an hour with a child with autism and who the hell is he to make that sort of statement. The parents i know with autistic children probably spend TWICE as much time with their child because they REQUIRE that attention.

  24. dmray says – reply to this

    124

That is one of the most dangerous and ignorant comments I have ever heard. I worked with autistic children for four years, and I can say without a doubt that autism is very real, and very serious. These children often need constant supervision, and their familes are greatly impacted, sometimes in a good way, sometimes not. It takes very loving, strong, committed parents who are willing to put time, energy, and often times money into their child's life to get them help, and unfortunately there is no cure. We can speculate on what causes autism, from mercury in shots to a genetic predisposition, but at the end of the day, it is very real. To say otherwise is just plain wrong.

  25. Smute says – reply to this

    125

This guy is a jackass. My 20yr old brother has Autism.. no one knows what it is truly like, unless you have lived with an Autistic child. It has nothing to do with how the parents treat them! My mother and father were in my brother's life and they were stern with punishments when we misbehaved, so with my case alone is theory is shot to hell. If it was as easy as telling a child to "grow up" then I doubt the people involved in Autistic people's lives wouldn't be as caring and understand towards that child. Now, ADHD I could see as a misdiagnosed condition that has been over used.. maybe he's confusing ADHD with Autism? Either way, he should know, it's the vaccines that are doing this, not the parents.

  26. 126

He'll probably experience some serious karma sometime soon

  27. 127

This guy is an uneducated moron! My little brother has Asperger syndrome, which is a milder form of autism, and my parents have went through HELL to ensure that he has a normal, well-rounded life. If anything, parents with autistic children are some of the most kind, patient, and loving parents in the world! If you've never been around an autistic child for long periods of time, it's easy to just shrug it off as nothing more than a spoiled brat but that's far from the case. It takes amazing people to be able to handle the responsibility of having a child who suffers from autism because I've told my parents on numerous occasions that I don't think I could ever deal with it but they say you do what you have to for your children, and they're right.

People who don't understand autism should either shut up about it, or educate themselves. It's more than the screaming brats on the Maury show, and if you're ever faced with the challenge of dealing with an autistic child, you'll change your tune very quickly!

  28. Hypoc says – reply to this

Jenni~ You're "IN" psychiatry. Doing what exactly? I'm "IN" parenting a child on the spectrum who is well behaved and intelligent and I have been praised for how he handles himself. I have paid tens of thousands on therapies. The intial diagnosis took nearly 6,000 dollars. You think I wanted ot hear "autism"? Ther eare many, many criteria that need to be met in the DSM before you geta diagnosis. Many tests, observations , interviews. Many parents cant even afford that(I went into debt) I wonder how many more cases we would see if parents could actually afford the tests,,,then who in the hell can afford the therapy. I'm a paycheck away form losing everything. Believe that!! Savage is an ass, and has no idea.

What a dangerous man he is and like Imus he should be removed from the radio waves. I would never listen to him or buy products from his sponsors. My younger brother has severe Autism and we all were raised in a strict catholic home and I can assure you his autism is not an environmental reaction or lack of parenting.

I am absolutely disgusted with this man.
He has obviously never been around children with autism.
I have been working with children diagnosed with autism for a couple years now.

Until he has sat with a child day after day. watching the roller coaster of emotion, confusion, and heartbreaking failure that comes along with autism, he really should not even be commenting on the subject.

I really hope that if he ever has any more children, or grandchildren that they turn out to be autistic, Until then, he will never know what autism truly means.

My 7 year old daughter says: Mr. Savage, you are wrong. My brother has Autism, just because he has that, he is not a brat. Whatever you say about my brother, and all the other kids with Autism is not true. They are not normal, just like you. If you are an Autism doctor, you are not very good at helping little kids. I am very lucky that my brother can even speak, at least it is not so bad for him that he has to stare at a wall all day. You can't understand if you don't have it in your life, like me. I love my brother very much.

  44. vrw23 says – reply to this

    144

Autism is overly diagnosed. The reason being is because there are so many spectrums of autism. Ranging from extremely mild to extremely severe. My son has PDD which is very low on the autism spectrum and if he wouldn't have had the diagnosis he wouldn't be given the treatment he needs to be able to go to "normal school". It is extremely hard on parents and there is a sense of guilt you feel. I look back over the 2 1/2 years of my sons life and his father and I are good parents. I'm not taking much offense to what he said because I believe in freedom of speech and that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I do think it

I agree with him. There is no known biological/chemical source. It's more likely a behavior as a result of a person's environment. We are an overmedicated society and point the finger at other things when we should point it at ourselves. We call alcoholism a disease when there is no known pathological base for this definition. It is a behavior.

I don't know why people are trying to support Savage's claims by saying that he has 2 or 3 PhDs….I have a PhD in clinical psychology (so yes, I do actually know a little something about the autism spectrum disorders), but I wouldn't ever think that I could speak knowledgeably about 18th century history or chemistry. Just because he was educated in one topic doesn't mean he knows shit about any other topic. And he definitely knows absolutely nothing about autism.

He is in the business just for the money. He graduated from UC Berkeley and didn't he used to be a vitamin salesperson? You can make a lot more $$ being an a*s. A few years ago the SF police had to tell him to stop interfering with a documentary crew who were filming an arrest as a ride along. He and his wife began screaming obsenities at the crew without realizing that they were with the police as their guest. He should have been arrested himself and charged with interfering with an arrest.

How could he say that? It's like Rush saying Michael J Fox was "faking" his tremors. They really shouldn't talk about stuff they know NOTHING about.

Sorry AUTISM and ADD and ADHD are to different things. Some of the people that agree with him probably are just as misinformed as he is.

They don't give you and ounce of medication for AUTISM its just a disorder. You can only recieve therapy. So they dont "DOPE YOU UP" like someone said. They only help you to become more functional.
    Theres no "FAKING" Autism
I think Micheal Savage is misinformed like many of these people

He is a very "educated" many many are saying…so I think he knows what he is saying is not true…hes is just feeding americans what they want to hear.

It's sad how me admits his father was pretty cruel to him. Calling him an idiot and telling him not to cry. You can discipline your kids with LOVE . My mom and dad didnt take ANY CRAP but she would never verbally abused me…Verbal abuse is far more damaging than a spanking. A spanking (not BEATING) is correction and consequence…VERBAL abuse is an attack on self esteem and you end up scarred like Mr Savage. All of his DEGREES can't heal that damage or erase the evil inside him.

what the hell does jenny mccarthey know anyway??? he's right with some of the kids!! there's a diagnosis for EVERYTHING out there…perez is allowed to speak his mind and michael savage isn't?? Michael can say what he wants!! Some of the kids need to be smacked into shape! Some probably have autism & some don't!! It's the TRUTH!

Take joy in the fact that Karma will take care of this motherfucker. I am the parent of an autistic child who is the sweetest thing in the world. Yes, he has his moments but NONE of his symptoms are due to bad parenting or acting out.

I hope Jenny McCarthy kicks his ASS. He deserves to get some debilitating brain disease and then we can all accuse him of faking it. It'll happen. Something bad always happens to those people who pick on innocent children. In the mean time, tell that guy to go fuck himself!! Go to his website and write to any of the sponsors of his show. Get him pulled off the air if possible.

Maybe he means ADD or ADHD. I'm a middle school teacher (ages 13-15 ish) and so many kids labeled as such are JUST LITTLE SHITS honestly … a result of insufficiant parenting, boundaries and consequences AT HOME. Many of these kids think it would be great to be in the "resource room" because they think it'll be easy. The become especially vile once they're social outcasts because of being "labeled". If you tell a kid they're stupid, they'll live down to that expectation. Adults need to step up and use they're fucking brains. Don't be your kid's friend. That's NOT your job.

okay, i've worked extensively with children with autism for many years, and i'll say this: he is a major fuckhead for saying 99% of the cases are just due to bad parenting. the majority of the children i worked with were honestly afflicted with the mental disorder, and i hope he never ever has to experience knowing a child/having a child with such a horrific and scary disorder.

however, i will say this: there ARE parents out there that do fit into his nasty comments. i worked with one family that demanded services for their child whom they claimed had autism (more specifically, ADHD, which is on the autism spectrum), and THAT was complete bullshit. they needed family COUNSELING, not ABA therapy or a TSS. i also know another woman who went around saying her kid was autistic just to gain sympathy from others because she was a fucking cunt. so, yeah… there is truth to what he says, and autism is WAY over-diagnosed for children with behavioral problems, HOWEVER, it's disgusting for him to deny that autism is not real AT ALL. it is VERY real, and there are many poor children and families suffering out there who need our help and understanding. if he ever met a child who was low functioning and had autism, he would know that it is not some made up disorder for bad parents!!

as a teacher i would have to agree that like ADD before it, autism is exceedingly over diagnosed and many of the disabilities that doctors are labeling children with are indeed more times than not because of a lack of parenting. we no longer take the time to allow children to be children, to act out and run and play and not necessarily be obedient 100% of the time. the saddest part is that such over-diagnosing is an insult to those who actually have these diseases and the true and severe symptoms that accompany them. we are doing those individuals a huge disservice.

As a parent of a young child with pervasive developmental delays, and after the months of research I've done (not to mention personal experience), I DO believe autism is overdiagnosed. That is certainly not to say that it's not a real problem, nor that it can't be heart wrenching for families living with it. My son was originally diagnosed as having autism, however, the more I read about it, the more I didn't believe it, so I got a second opinion. Turns out my son does have various delays (primarily in communication and social skills), but with proper therapy, we have every hope that he'll be able to lead a "typical" life. As far as this Savage guy goes, he's certainly entitled to his opinion, though I believe he does a huge disservice to those living with and dealing with autism.

as an aunt to two autistic children, I can safely say that it has nothing to do with their parents skills.

but it sounds as if he needs a good ass kicking, which I'm sure someone will get to after I tell him to fuck off.

    what an asshole.

Oh BTW, I'm 14 & work with autistic kids. I even know they are not just misbehaving because they have no parents around. If you are an autistic parent, you are in that childs life 24/7. They have A LOT of love & discipline.

You cannot control yourself in anyway when you are autistic. It takes a lot of work for them to finally grasp on to things. His claims are beyond ignorant.

    Idiot.

My boyfriends son is autistic. He's 16 and can't speak, can't go anywhere on his own, and will most likely be in homes for the duration of his adult life. I don't know much about autism but one thing I do know is that in his case it's not "just an act"

I would give MY OWN LIFE to help my son. If it was just a discipline problem, my son would be cured.
