This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."
And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!
Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.
The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”
He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.
He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."
He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”
As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”
At least they're trying to cover their asses.
Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

i work with kids who are autistic - i dare him to spend 1 day with them - actually no 1 hour - and tell me those kids are just brats. fucking ignorant people. he's a scum bag. i hope he burns.
My 10 yr old son has Autism, not a lack of discipline. My "normal" 11 year daughter who is perfectly behaved is proof of our dscipline skills. I think ADD could be a bit over diagnosed, but Autism is REAL. No one should have to live with this.

I work with children with disabilities, including autism, adhd, mental disabilities, etc. I agree with all of the relatives and people who have experience with children with autism, Savage clearly has never even been around a child with autism. If he had any experience with them, he would never say such ignorant things. There is a HUGE difference between a bratty child and a child with autism. People who truly think like this disturb me and prove the need for further education on these misunderstood children.
i think savage is disgusting for saying that. he needs to look at children who are autistic because of all the ones i've ever encountered (i've worked with them), none of them are being bratty and almost all of them come from 2 parent homes who have siblings that are or are not autistic. i'm appalled by what he said and I feel for parents of autistic children who had to hear that

Dr. Savage is NOT a homophobe, as you'd know if you actually listened. He is incredibly intelligent, a brillian historian and one of our last hopes, if you want this country to exist for much longer.
Unfortunately, I agree that he is more right than wrong. It's a disease yes, but it's extremely overdiagnosed in cases that are more likely to be other things like schizophrenia. Doctors want the cheap bill and with autism, they can get the bill and not have to do any real work. Same debacle with ADD/ADHD in both kids and adults. It's a disease but it's rare. Many "autistic" children are not, they ARE badly behaved, others have more serious diseases like Schiz, paranoia, manic depression, etc. that go undiagnosed instead. In fact, several "popular" types of Autism are damn near mirrored in the symptoms of schizophrenia.
While some ARE autistic by true means (meaning no other possibilities), that number is probably closer to 10% of the diagnosed autistic people.

Quacks say that 1 in a 160 kids have autism. Statisics say this is impossible. I'll side with statisics and not the quacks who work for the pharmaceutical industry. Far to many kids are being labeled autisic when infact they are not and it is criminal what they are putting them through all in the name of big business pharmecutical companies. There is no medical test for now to determine autism and anyone who claims there is is a quack. Buyer beware.

For any of you who agree with him, you have no idea how ignorant you sound. I can almost guarantee that Mr. Savage has never spent more than a moment with an autistic child. My 16 year old sister was diagnosed with autistim at the age of 3 and since then my parents have been nothing short of steller. Yes, autistic children can be difficult and hard to handle at times, but isn't eveyone? And it's not an over diagnosed disorder. It's a spectrum disorder, which means that there are many different disorders that fall under the name "austism." My advice to Mr. Savage and anyone who agrees with him, go pick up a book on autism and learn a thing or two about it. Or better yet, talk to a family that is actually living with the disorder.

Autism is the new ADD/ADHD.
As a parent of a 10 year old son with autism, I can only laugh at his ignorance and hope that it brings this issue to the forefront. It is a condition that occurs 1 in 150 children and 4:1 boys to girls. It is more prevalent than juvenile diabetes, childhood cancer and cystic fibrosis combined, yet only brings in a fraction of the donations to these other causes. Fortunately, we have come a long way from the 50's and 60's where they blamed autism on "refridgerator mothers".

A good friend of mine has a child with autism, and he is one of the sweetest children I have ever known. It's not from bad parenting, it's a disablity that the whole family has to deal with on a daily basis. This just makes my blood boil when people talk like this about things they obviously know nothing about.

The medical industry has started doing it because they can really rake in the bucks from "treatments" for these types of realitively uncommon medical conditions. Kind of like people who are in the habit of drinking a lot, so they get convinced by doctors they have a disease and need rehab and ongoing treatments. Bullshit. There was a big commentary article in the paper recently writen by one of the top authorities on autism. He said it is way over diagnoised, and it is not that uncommon for some young children to go thru phases where they act out, or are unresponsive and seem to be in their "own little world".

Autism is a developmental disability present from birth which affects the way the brain processes information. Symptoms start before age three, in the developmental period, and cause problems with the many ways in which a person develops or grows.
Any person who has spent 5 minutes with a child or person with autism knows that it is not a result of bad parenting. Mr. Savage should be ashamed of himself, addtionally no one automatically knows how to parent a child with autism. In fact, what usually works with “typical” children doesn’t work with children with autism spectrum disorders.
He has NO idea what it is like to have a child with Autism. My eldest son has autism and it is a struggle. I have two younger children and they are very well behaved and they all have their father in their life. SO this SOB needs to do some Effen research and know what he is talking about. You can't say make comments like that if you do not personally know what a struggle it is to deal with autism.

Right overmedicated… what an idiot! I have friends who have a six year old autistic son, Dylan is wonderful and amazing. He is this way because his parents take an active role in making sure his life is as normal as possible. Therapy three times a week, speech courses, and hours of routine so that he feels comfortable. And I am sure they don't do all of this b/c he is a "brat." What a fucking waste of money would that be!!!! This guy should be ashamed!!! I think its pretty obvious that he has never been around an autistic child once in his life!

No one wants their child labeled anything. It is devastating for the parents to see their once perfect baby become an isolated, withdrawn child..who lines up toys, has extreme sensory issues, repeat the same phrase over and over but unable to respond to his name or even a simple command. it is heartbreaking and I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy.

Our son is disciplined and corrected for inappropriate behavior–he's not allowed to run wild. My son is a joy, despite this developmental disability. I work in a school for intellectually and developmentally challenged children. Three out of my seven students are autistic, and they all come for two parent families. He has no clue what he is talking about, and is a misinformed idiot. I would invite him to my class to see what it is like first hand for these kids, but he would probably be too afraid to go near them.

Having worked in a special education classroom with children with mild to severe autism, I am appalled at his reckless statements. I would love for him to spend one day in this class and see how real this diagnosis is. I laughed when I read that he thinks people should just tell these children to grow up and act their age. That's an interesting thought, considering that 3 of my five children are still in diapers at the ages of 7 and 8.
I could understand if he was talking about ADD or ADHD. That disorder is very commonly OVER DIAGNOSED. Autism is definitely not something that the parents are doing wrong. Mike Savage is one of the most listened to radio hosts in the US. He makes a great deal of sense on many issues. Autism is most likely related to a number of things to include genetics and vaccines. There have been a series of congressional hearings regarding this spearheaded by the Kennedy family.
Although I do not agree with everything that Savage says, he is still a great radio host with real solutions for many of the problems that our country is facing.

Michael Savage is a REAL doctor. He is not a Scientologist. He holds several Ph.d's, from Berkley, in nutrition and botany. The man has twice the level of education than most of the people posting on this blog. Listen to his radio show and learn, he's fascinating. He has a right to express his opinion like everyone else, and at least he's speaking about something of importance, rather than wondering if Lindsey Lohan is gay. As an educator who has worked in a special eduation capacity for some of my ten years in public education, I have to say I agree with much of what Dr Savage is saying about autism. He is occasionally bombastic, which is quite refreshing and rare in our male-neutered society, and certainly media; but he will be the first to admit there are certain cases where underlying mental illness and disease is hidden under the autistic umbrella, and that there are some exceptions to his seemingly unqualified statement that autism is a catch-all for lax parenting and poor medical diagnosis. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DISPUTE DR. SAVAGES LEARNED POSITION, KINDLY TELL ME WHY AND HOW SO MANY "FLAGRENT" AND "HOPELESS" BEHAVIORAL CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM KNOW WHEN AND WHERE TO SHUT THE HELL UP WHEN THEY WALK ONTO A PUBLIC BUS; OR WHEN DEALING WITH OLDER CHILDREN OR ADULTS THEY DO NOT KNOW (AND MAY OR MAY NOT PUT UP WITH THIER CHILDISH AND INCESSANT GRABBING OF ATTENTION AND ANTI-SOCIAL RANTS). i do have to agree with him on what he's trying to say…
alot of children, relatives of mine included, are diagnosed with "mild autism" that has symtoms like being shy. And they are diagnosed with "mild autism" because the parents want a quick fix or assumes theres something wrong instead of helping their kid be more social or teaching them to deal with their problems instead of crying or throwing a fit. and parents like these are a big problem in the health care system. and they are bad parents.
howeverrr autism does exist and savage should not have lumped all the cases together like he did. he does have a lot of valid points and arguments and im sad to see him negate all the intelligent things he does have to say by making a (very large) judgment error like this one.

I work with autistic children. All sponsors of his program need to pull out. He needs to go to classes and be educated about autism….along with the comment below about ADD children need discipline. God people,,,,educate yourself before sticking your foot in your mouth.
