This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."
And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!
Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.
The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”
He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.
He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."
He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”
As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”
At least they're trying to cover their asses.
Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

There ARE children who constantly act out, who live with only one parent, and that parent absolutely refuses to discipline the child, that are diagnosed as autistic when there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. I've seen it more it than once.
I do not believe it's all of them though.
Haha. I am an Occupational Therapist and I work with Autistic children. I would love to stick him in a room with 10 of them at one time and see how he deals with their behavior. Also, according to what he's reading? Obviously the wrong thing.

What this man is saying and broadcasting to the general public is probably one of the worst things i have ever heard. Growing up I was friends with a boy whose little brother has autism. It was a single parent home, and i can say from first hand experience that he was not a "bad kid whose parents did not discipline him." what this man is saying only shows what an ignorant type of person he is. And as for the talk about kids with ADD just being +doped up and needing to go outside and play" is also ignorant. My cousin has ADD and if it were not for his medication he would be back to the way he was 5 years ago, unable to focus and reverting his anger towards my mother by breaking a piece of glass from his Mother's (my Aunt) cabinet and threatening to cut her throat.

As a mother of an child with asperger's (high functioning autism) I am highly offended and angry about his comments. . . I have spent 5 years struggling with my child . . . all the while friends and family judged how I was rearing him. . . with the autism diagnosis I have finally received the "parenting manual" and help I have been praying for. . . FINALLY I am able to speak his language — thus he has become so much more manageable. My other child is nothing like my child with AS — and their father is 100% here to co-parent . . . therefore we are confident that we have not created the struggles that our AS child deals with. . .

Autism as a "condition" is the new flavor of the month.
My brother was diagnosed with autism at age 2. My parents did a great job parenting. I am a teacher, my older brother is a banker, and my autistic brother works in a warehouse. My brother had behavior problems directly related to autism: not being able to speak until he was about 5 and not having complete control over his emotions. My brother was not a "brat." We are all well rounded, successful and hardworking. Michael Savage may want to do some research before he makes uneducated and moronic generalizations.
I half agree with him. There is alot of children labeled autistic when the parents fail to punish them, I see it everyday in my childrens school. It never fails its always a child where both parents work and they have lots of things and big house. These children never are disaplined when misbehaving, because of guilt.

autism is a MEDICAL diagnosis. any physician - a DOCTOR makes this diagnosis. there have been VOLUMES of literature published to support this, CHECK ANY REPUTABLE MEDICAL JOURNAL AND YOU WILL FIND THOUSANDS OF ARTICLES. yes, poor parenting can make the autistic children have very poor social skills and MORE difficulties in their communities…. That's a horrible thing to say about autism. ADD or ADHD are the things that get over-diagnosed. If you have a bad kid…he must have ADHD. Autism, however, is very real, and it's sad that people who don't understand the disease say that it's not real. It's very real, and all this guy is doing is crying out for an extra 15 minutes of fame. People like that don't deserve any attention, whatsoever, but it's a shame, that people like that are the ones who receive most of the attention.

It seems that some of your readers are as uninformed about ASD as Mr. Savage. Ignorance breeds discrimination. There are five disorders on the autism spectrum…1 out of every 150 children is diagnosed with autism. There are many proven methods to assist in facilitating behavioral change in children with ASD (Lovaas Method, ABA, TEACCH). Behaviors, when not addressed, can often seem to be a 'temper tantrum' but the disability itself is not due to 'bad parenting'. I would suggest that those in agreement with Mr. Savages statements do a little research and gain some knowledge as well as some compassion.

All of you people who think that he may be on to something clearly have never actually spent time with an autistic child and have no actual concept of what the disease entails. I worked as a caretaker for a 16 year old with autism, and I spent time teaching him to do basic things like how to talk into a telephone and how to read a clock. People with moderate to severe autism are often very developmentally delayed, with problems that go way beyond poor social skills.

My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community's attempt to label too many children or adults as "autistic."
Just as some drug companies have overdiagnosed "ADD" and "ADHD" to peddle dangerous speed-like drugs to children as young as 4 years of age, this cartel of doctors and drug companies is now creating a national panic by overdiagnosing "autism, for which there is no definitive medical diagnosis!

You don't think that we wake up everday hoping thatshe can have a normal life like her sisters. Shewill be three and has not said a word!!! My other three children are perfect in every way…and you know what she is perfect in her way. it isn't an excuse it is a way of life for us now.
i could see why he thinks autism is an overdiagnosed condition. For those who do have autism, either mild or severe, having a structured and diciplined enviroment helps in gaining control of their condition. Otherwise without structure the condition just worsens along with their behavior.

I agree to some extent. I also think a lot of these kids diagnosed as autistic are just weird. And their parents don't want to deal with a weird kid so they slap this label on them. Being diagnosed autistic also gives you a lot of services, special schooling, after school etc which means even less time parents have to deal with their weird kids.

How does a two year old fake anything? How does a toddler pretend not to be able to communicate? How does a baby fake a lack of eye contact? Even if this man is well eduacted like everyone here says, he still has much to learn about Autism and those affected by it.
I think Mr. Savage, as well as many of the people commenting here, are confusing Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism (and other Autism Spectrum Disorders) - two diseases with very different manifestations. I agree that ADHD may be grossly overdiagnosed, but Autism, if anything, is underdiagnosed. And Mr. Savage has probably never met a child with Autism if he believes that the disease is only a failure of parenting skills.

I have a 2 year old son (Second child. First child is perfectly fine) who is going through the testing for Autism. He is 27 months, but developmentally at 12 months. We have 3 different therapists coming into our home each week for therapy with our State's Early Intervention Program. He also has a father around (a US Army Soldier, former Infantry, Been in Combat twice & earned TWO bronze stars in his last 2 combat tours). Phenomenal Dad, but also must have structure & order. The only BRATS we have are MILITARY B.R.A.T.s - children who move around with the military!!!

I heard exactly what he said on this particular day and his comments were totally taken out of context. His brother was mentally challenged, so he would not pick on any special needs children. What he said was that there are some people who are using autism as an excuse to medicate their children, mainly the ones that he was talking about were the ones that act out in school or the parents who don't want to admit that their kids need discipline. Their answer is retilin, or some sort of drug to calm them down, instead of spending quality time with the child or a spanking. There is a BIG difference between a child who really has autism and one who just chooses school or somewhere to act up. On today's show, he reiterated how he does not pick on autistic children and he also found the source where this misconception came from–Media Matters took his comments out of context and sent emails to different groups for Autism and got all of this mess started. The Autism Controversy
My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community's attempt to label too many children or adults as "autistic."
Just as some drug companies have overdiagnosed "ADD" and "ADHD" to peddle dangerous speed-like drugs to children as young as 4 years of age, this cartel of doctors and drug companies is now creating a national panic by overdiagnosing "autism, for which there is no definitive medical diagnosis!
Many children are being victimized by being diagnosed with an "illness" which may not exist, in all cases. Just a few weeks ago doctors recommended dangerous anti-cholesterol drugs for children as young as 2 years of age! Without any scientific studies on the possible dangers of such drugs on children, corrupt doctors made this controversial, unscientific recommendation.
Increasingly, our children are being used as profit centers by a greedy, corrupt medical/pharmaceutical establishment. As the brother of a severely disabled person who suffered and died in a New York "snake-pit" of a "mental hospital," I know first-hand what true disability is.
To permit greedy doctors to include children in medical categories which may not be appropriate is a crime against that child and their family. Let the truly autistic be treated. Let the falsely diagnosed be free.

Well- I hate Michael Savage- But he's just like Rush L. He's saying things to get press- for the holy shit factor- a contrarian. HOWEVER- I will say this- Autism IS a VERY overdiagnosed condition- just like ADD is. It's the disease of the millenium for kids- and I think, that on the lower ends of the spectrum (one end being severe- the other end being very mild) I think often times it might be a behavior issue.
There's a little boy in my neighborhood who is diagnosed autistic and his mother is devastated and has joined the throngs of angry parents going crazy about vaccines and such- and really- he appears to me to be a kid with some behavior problems- nothing more. I've seen real Aspergers kids- kids who truly have symptoms I'd say are on the spectrum - like incredible singular focus, complete dislike for being touched- in their own worlds- etc. But there are a ton of kids diagnosed who are just misbehaving little kids too. So I sort of agree to a degree- in the right context-but hate to agree with Michael Savage.
You just know this guy eats his own shit. I cannot understand how an educated man can make such uneducated statements. I wonder how much it cost him to get his degrees? You see in Australia you cannot buy your education like you can in America where any inbred asshole with money can get a PHD.

I am a preschool special education teacher and would like Mr. Savage to come into my classroom for 10 minutes and see what Autism is all about. My job would be obsolete if it was as simple as he says to deal with children with autism. He is an ass.

I THINK SAVAGE IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE. My friend's stepbrother is an adult and has SEVERE autisim. I'd love to put him in a room with Savage and see if what Savage thinks would really work. I know it won't b/c my friend's SB doesn't have the capacity to understand. Its very sad.

I,do, however, work with these children everyday and I know that they don't chose to act this way and most of them have both parents in the picture. Think before you speak idiot!

many children who have autism come from mainly Asian parents who tend to be engineers and middle class families.
If he knows anything about asian parents, they don't really "coddle" their children and they know something about strict parenting.
It is difficult to diagnose autism because there's several different levels of severity — my brother has autism and it's pretty mild but very much a hindrance on how he can live.
He does bring an interesting point about the overdependence on drugs in our society, but he shouldn't overgeneralize what is a complicated and very serious issue.
Re: Jenni – Well psycharists have been studying austism and have found there are many different spectrums. I should know since I was diagnosed with autism a couple of years ago.

Practice responsible journalism and boycott the idiot. ADD and autism are not the same thing so educate yourself and others. His sponsors should consider ramifications of his ignorant ramage. My friend has an autistic child, Aidan 's parents and sibling do everything possible to help and no amount of discipline fixes autism. We need to find a cure and raise awareness.
