This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."
And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!
Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.
The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”
He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.
He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."
He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”
As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”
At least they're trying to cover their asses.
Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

It's a disease yes, but it's overdiagnosed in cases that are more likely to be other things. Doctors want the bill and autism, they can get the bill and not have to do work. Same debacle with ADD/ADHD. It's a disease but it's rare. In fact, several types of Autism near mirrored in symptoms of schizo.
Also, look at posts here - most have autistic children at the least, are related to someone who is. Even shyness is called Autism. You say listen to "doctors" - how many? And then how many are getting kickbacks? Doctors want money, very few doctors actually CARE about their patients. Their Rx's are tracked and the pharma's can see the doctor is scribing meds and how often. Different behaviors are other diseases. People keep saying "You think a parent wants a labeled child". Yes, some do. It gives them an excuse for bad parenting, non-parenting or lack of knowing what to do in certain situations.
Again, autism IS a true disease. However, it's probably only about 10% of diagnosed ACTUALLY have it, as opposed to having something else, or nothing at all. It amazes me how many parents just "accept" autism diagnosis by a single doctor rather than requesting MRI's, etc. Many parents are missing SERIOUS diseases because of this. All one has to do is research from people that aren't paid by pharma's. Hell, even look at statements from heads of autism foundations, even THEY say it's overdiagnosed.
OK, all you morons who seem to not understand the difference between ADD and Autism - get a fucking grip you assholes !

While I think Savage generalizes too much and tries to get a reaction out of people by being grandiose he also makes a valid point about how terrible parents are at disciplining their children today.

I'm the father of a autistic son. Of course my other child is completely normal. My kids have two stay at home parents, we are very involved with their education etc. I have often wondered why my son is autistic, and despite 10 years of living with him and being his dad, I have no clue as to why him and not my daughter.
Other people with only a first impression would not think anything is 'wrong' with my son. But once you spend a few days with him, you begin to notice things. Like lack of eye contact. Awkward and inappropriate social comments / problems etc. He taught himself flash programming at age 7, with no help from anyone, so he could make his own cartoons. Which is brilliant. But he has a great deal of difficulty with things like humor. He will ask me if something was funny, and if I say yes, that was funny, THEN he will laugh his head off.
I'm glad that it was an obvious moron like Savage who brought this up. Had it been an actual respected person in the media the damage would have been incalculable. Instead a paranoid, homophobe racist just made a bigger fool of himself.
Despite his problems he is an absolutely adorable child. He loves to jump in bed with us in the morning and snuggle, he always tells us he loves us, he likes to help mom in the kitchen and is brilliant with computers.

Savage is a very educated man…you should look into what he does…I have worked with the entire spectrum of autistic children and some are a result of bad parenting…some are so out of it that there is no way any teacher can teach them something….they are a drain on our educational system. We are seeing the effects of alcohol and meth during pregnancy. Michael Savage is a genius and "liberal" people should listen to what he says. When you have kids and a real job, you do not want to pay for other people's children. We need to stop rewarding bad behavior in American in order to make us feels better, because those who are taking are looking at those who are giving without a glimpse of appreciation. It all comes back to bad parents!

I was in the park today walking my doggies and witnessed a true brat in action. Grandma was taking her for a picnic and trying to lead her to a nice spot, her response: "No, No, I won't Grandma…. I want to go over there, that corner grandma, NO!!! Grandma: "It is nice here, we are having a nice picnic OK?" Brat: NO and I mean NO (foot stomping). Grandma: "Ok, where do you want to go…?"
I carried on with my walk and on the way back saw them both sitting in a dark spot on wet grass probably being eaten alive by gnats! Bratty still mouthing away… a piece of paper blew away and all 8 years of her yelled "SHIT…"

I am replused at the ignorance of Michael Savage. I called my local station KNEW in San Francisco's program director and left him a message voicing my disguist. I also am calling advertisers/sponsors of the Savage show on this station to tell them of what Michael Savage said about autism and that I won't be buying their products or listening to his show. I encouraged the advertisers to disassociate themselves with Savage and his show and to not advertise on KNEW until the station issues an apology. Michael Savage is simply a hater with a microphone. His discription of his father and childhood explains everything.

I am the parent of a child with special needs. My son suffered a brain injury at 8 days of age and his needs are far reaching. He is doing great, considering. I take him to therapies each week and we have met other children with special needs, including autism. Honestly, some of the autistic children are far more impaired from a speech, motor, mental standpoint than he is~~ and he is considered 'brain injured'. Michael Savage is an idiot that may be book smart, but has no common sense. Clearly, the nerd in school that uttered shocking things just for attention, ANY attention……including negative attention. Mr. Savage, do some face to face research, get to know some of these families, and use some responsibility in your public format to create good.
Once upon a time I listened to his show… for about a month. I can only handle so much ignorance coming from one person. I heard this show when he was talking about autism…. this was about a month ago so I'm wondering why it's just NOW coming out. Anyway, he's a prick. Total & complete prick. As an educator of many students with different abilities, I can say that, without a doubt, autism has absolutely nothing to do with parenting. People who live with autism have sensory issues and are affected by sound and often "act out" because of a sensory overload. It is very difficult condition to understand, particularly because it does not discriminate based on socioeconomic background, ethnicity or gender. Unfortunately, idiots like Mr. Savage choose to do the discriminating and ignorance-spewing all on their own. Poor parenting can cause children to be brats, prisoners, addicts, compulsives, obsessives, depressives or very independent, free-thinking successes. Autistic, it does not.

I don't care about his degrees, he obviously knows little to nothing about that which he is speaking. He seems to be confusing ADD and ADHD with autism. And, as far as asthma rates in low-income minority communities, that's an obvious one: urban areas = smog; smog = asthma. The man may be extremely intelligent, but I believe he is using he brains, degrees and power for evil instead of good.

Although I don't agree with his statistics, you don't have to insult your readers by mis-quoting him and taking it out of context to make it seem even worse. We're perfectly capable of listening to the audio clip and understanding what he means. Yes, kids to fake diseases to get more money, and autism is probably one of the easier ones to fake. 99% is probably way off, but the underlying point remains valid. If you could see some of the profoundly disabled children with autism you would never blame it on attention seeking and bad parenting!! But the reasons behind this have very little to do with political correctness, and everything to do with disappearing dads, moms stretched too thin to teach everything needed, drugs, parents who try to be friends instead of parents, and people expecting teachers to fix all of this within the 35 hours a week we see these children. But NONE of this has ANYTHING to do with autism. Are we going to blame parenting or pharmaceutical companies for Down Syndrome or blindness? There is a real reason for autism, which has yet to be discovered. It has a biologic and/or genetic root. If Savage used all his wondrous degrees to find the real cause, then I might consider him a "genius."

I know a child who has been diagnosed as austistic. He is really no better than a ferral animal yet tax payers must spend $100,000 a year to "educate" him. For being someone who has a cousin who was diagnosed with autism eight years ago - I can echo Michael Savage when I say the kid isn't autistic. He's just an idiot who wasn't parented at all and let to run the house and do whatever he wanted to do and still runs the house doing whatever he wants to do. His parents want to claim he is autistic because they get $800 a month from the government for his "condition." All they are is white trash that want a government handout and will do anything to seek that free money even if it means giving their kid a fake condition. Oh wait, it's not free money - we are taxed for it. Thanks democrats!

I think we ARE an over-diagnosed society…I have depression, bipolar disorder, border personality disorder, ADD, AUTISM…bleh blah blah…docs are NOT doing their jobs. We are also one of the most OVER MEDICATED societies in the world.

this is unbelievable. it's funny how no one has suspended him from the radio as they did with Imus. autism is an actual disease and HAS NOTHING TO DO with having a father figure around and telling them to stop being a brat. i know a little boy who is 5 that suffers from the disease and has both of his parents involved in his life very much. there should be a ban from his garbage radio show. this CREATURE, he isn't even considered human to me at this point, is the perfect example of a waste of life.
While I do believe that Autism and ADD are real disorders, I think MOSt of the kids diagnosed are phonies. It's a matter of parents wanting to be their child's friend and not their parent - most of these kids have never heard the word, "NO". Don't even get me started on the Indigo Children Bullshit!

It makes me sad. The lack of education, common sense, decency and experience on the subject is astonishing. Re: Shay – I know you were addressing others besides myself, but did you happen to notice that the few of us agreeing with the basic idea that Autism is over diagnosed are not saying that "Autism doesn't exist"…just that many kids are indeed brats and their parents (in those particular instances) don't want to admit that they are shitty parents and will go along with a Doctor's blanket diagnosis. Re read most of the comments and you'll see that we are NOT denying that Autism and ADD exist. Maybe the people that are outraged at these comments are guilty of being the shitty parents I mentioned.
