This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."
And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!
Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.
The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”
He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.
He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."
He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”
As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”
At least they're trying to cover their asses.
Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

Most of you have never even listened to his show and would probably drool all over yourselves if you did listen! Michael Savage speaks in hyperbole, and his show is largely satire. He is a UC Berkeley PhD and is definitely not an idiot. I challenge many of you to listen to his show!
High 5 to Dr.Savage for having the courage to say what alot of people, myself included believe to be the truth. I'm in my early 30s and the funny thing is NO ONE in my grade school or high school was autistic. If this really is a disease how did it suddenly appear in the last 5-10yrs or so. Me thinks and agrees that Autism is code for shitty parents who would rather medicate their kids and turn them into zombies rather than tell them to behave and simmer down when they're acting up. Why do so many people on this comment chain think that ADD and Autism are one in the same? Is ADD overdiagnosed? Probably. But autism is a very serious, sometimes debilitating-with regards to quality of life-neurological illness. It's been baffling doctors and medical researchers for years, and I don't think that some mediocre shock jock is going to uncover any great revelation regarding an illness he obviously knows nothing about.

I work in the field and have been around it all my life. This is a horrible thing to even put into people's minds! There's only one ounce of that that is true which is that it is overdiagnosed to some children that may misbehave/act out but not in the way that he's stating it in any means!!

One is a neurological brain disorder, one can not be cured or fixed with a pill. Comparing autism with ADD or ADHD is as stupid as comparing cancer to a cold or the flu.
as someone with autism, i think savage is an angry guy whose views are too right-wing for me. that said, there are many so-called autistics around who've been misdiagnosed or whose parents and/or doctors are getting government money out of it. i've seen the fraud as a health care worker. for those who have chronic misbehaving kids, i recommend the episode of south park in which an effective adhd cure is demonstrated. i've had that too, but i mostly grew out of it. anyway, people are entitled to their bonehead views, even brooke hogan.

Oh P - Michael Savage rocks. I've been listening him for years, and listened with my mom before she passed. He is an intelligent man, who is not always on the mark - but opens up some great dialouge. He has some good takes on Autism, and a lot of that comes from his brother being tossed into a hospital because he exhibited symptoms. Austism is not incurable, and often misdiagnosed.
Personally, I feel him bringing this out in the open is great! You don't have to agree with everything he says, but it gets you thinking — and that's an invaluable thing

The definition for Autism should be…the act of not being able to control your childs behavior or emotions because of ones lack of being able to control his or her own emotions. In essence, bad child rearing skills. Autism is rampant in the celebrity community for that very reason.
it is sad to see how ill-educated this man as well as the people who agree with him are. autisim is not something a child or parent chooses. as a volunteer who works with an autistic child, he is not the result of bad parenting. instead of putting their child on medication, this child's parents have chosen the path of physically and emotionally treating their child through love and acceptance, and they are also teaching their son to trust others so he can build the skills he needs to live with society. his parents (a school principal and elementary school teacher) work with him on a regular everyday basis to help him and have also found ways to discipline and teach him good behavior. yes there are many children who could use other methods besides medication to help their children, but conditions such as autism and ADD are not the results of bad parenting. i hope this man rots in hell.

Perez, I was thrilled that you ran this story. As the mother of an autistic child, I can attest to it being a medical condition. Friday is my son's 7th birthday and he will be spending it getting an EEG under sedation for seizure activity. I love my son more than life itself.
I would like to like your readers to know to Michael Savage's son is Russell Weiner, the CEO of Rockstar Energy Drink. I don't think many of you who have written listened to his show. He clearly, clearly stated that he was not talking about the true cases of autism. He talked about his brother. He does have compassion for those who truly have this disease. To those of you with children of autism I don't think you realize exactly what was said, many of you need to actually listen to this particular show. This 1:30 clip was not the true jist of the entire show and to be fair a new clip should be added where he discusses his compassion of the true cases of autism.
Although Savage was an idiot for phrasing his thoughts the way he did (insensitive as FUCK), the man does bring up a valid point. All too often, I see kids that have nothing medically wrong with them, but are still diagnosed as having "behavioral disorders". Some do benefit from medication and/or therapy treatments, but others just need better parenting: more interaction, more affection, clear ground rules, authority. Failing that, children can and do misbehave just because they feel like it. In that case, a kick up the arse normally solves the problem. It sure worked on me!

I might get attacked for saying this, but I think that people need to relax just a bit, and let this moron enjoy his FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS! Yeah, Dagger, cuz those social security diasbility checks are HUGE and the process is so easy….those twenty or so forms and accompanying doctors support etc etc etc is so easy. Have you ever applied for SSDI? As a social worker who has helped people obtain rightful benefits, I can tell you this process is not something that is easy to get through or to "fake". You don't just get to claim your child has autism or another disability and then start recieving checks. They take several weeks to process, you have to expose every part of your life and finances, etc. And seriously, what does drinking Koolaid have to do with this? Are you making fun of poor people? Wow, making fun of kids AND poor people…..Fab-o-lous.

He is still on the air because this is America, and we have a little something called freedom of speech. Perez should know something about this. It amazes me that everyone wants this guy "off the air!" because he said some controversial things…Perez has a pretty large audience online and no one is saying anything about drawn on coke and cum dribbles. I'm just sayin'.
I can't believe that he can be allowed to stay on American radio after making such an ignorant comment. I understand the necessity of freedom of speech but what really worries me is the number of comments that agree with his statements. These people need to go meet a family who struggles to cope with an autistic child and then maybe they could stop making uneducated, ignorant assumptions about a disability they know nothing about!
My son is 5 yrs old and has been diagnosed by a psychologist with Asperger's Syndrome this past year. He is a sweet, intelligent, kind hearted little boy. He just has some social issues to contend with.

Idiots, don't you know there is an entire SPECTRUM of Autism? Asberger's Syndrome, for instance, is a form of Autism, that they didn't REALIZE was Autism until within the past ten years. And there's the "other" side of the spectrum, in which some people can't even talk, let alone express their thoughts and feelings.
My sister is Autistic; she can't speak, she can't express her thoughts, she unfortunately can hardly communicate through sign language.
I am not Autistic, I can speak, I go to college, I'd like to think I can express myself rather well. I grew up with my sister my entire life, and she is only 2 years older than me.

TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF! AND ESPECIALLY TURN IT OFF DURING COMMERCIALS!! Radio execs LOVE it when people get riled up and pay attention to their shows. They will never pull him off the air for boosting ratings. The only way they'll pull him off is if their ratings fall and/or if advertisers start jumping ship. Radio ads are over priced so if a majority population can go 3 solid months (an entire quarter) without listening and lower the numbers in the books. Then station clients will start jumping ship, they'll lose money and be forced to take action.
PLEASE don't listen to the guy and hit the radio stations that carry the dipshit where it counts!

I do believe autism is a real illness. However, I will agree with him that this "sensitivity treatment overload" on kids is only hendering them from becoming adults that can make their own decisions. Parents do "overdiagnose" their kids sometimes, and think too much about things..but I have seen autism first hand, and it's not some attitude problem.

Michael Savage has long been one of the best and also one of the most attacked conservative radio hosts. He pulls no punches. And he pulled no punches here. First off, the media probably took it out of context.
For Savage to have said this, there must be a ring of truth to it. I do feel that autism is overdiagnosed and many cases are not autism. The business of the medical profession love to sell drugs, and the diagnosis of autism has become another meal ticket.
