This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."
And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!
Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.
The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”
He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.
He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."
He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”
As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”
At least they're trying to cover their asses.
Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

How does someone this ignorant end up with a radio talk show? His IQ is just high enough (or his producer's) to know that an uneducated statement of that magnitude regarding the most vulnerable part of society will garner undeserved attention and keep listeners tuned in. Until someone like this is affected personally, until they are slammed down onto their knees when it's their own child afflicted with this disorder, until they are actually educated in neurobiological disorders, they will continue their arrogant uninformed ramblings all in the name of sponsorship and continued air time.

this guy is an asshole. our 5 year old son has autism and he has two parents who love him and teach him the difference between right and wrong. yes, kids today are over medicated and doctors do tend to diagnose kids with anything now adays. here is the difference, our son is not medicated and not a brat. he is wonderful the way he is. he will never be bothered by a dick like this because that is what autism is, they don't have to deal with people like that.
our son lives through his heart totally and unbiased. he likes what he likes and makes no excuses for it. we make no excuses for him either, all we want for him is to be the best kid that he can be and obviously this assholes parents (I highly doubt that he was raised by both) did not give him the unconditional love that we give our son. he is entitled to his opinion, just educate yourself before you make ridiculous statements like that!
I love Michael Savage! Don't always agree with him, but who do you ALWAYS agree with? He is absolutely right on a lot of things. Listen to him and you will see that he is hilarious and totally cool. And probably has a good point with autism - it probably is misdiagnosed much of the time - that could at least partly explain the huge jump in Autism numbers. Whatever. Get over it!

Wow, Perez I like you, but I just checked out the youtube video someone said to check out with you saying autism and retard together . . . sooo many problems with that! First of all, mental retardation is a valid diagnosis and term . . . however, retard is not (there IS something wrong with saying it). Second, children with autism are not "retarded" . . . many have average to above average intelligence. I am absolutely apalled in reading this article. My brother was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at a very young age and I STRONGLY believe in the diagnosis. My parents are wonderful parents and did nothing to bring this disease upon him. He struggles with his daily life and I'm completely insulted that someone would be so rude and insensitive to claim that this condition doesn't even exist. There isn't a day that I don't worry about something happening to him or assholes treating him like shit. I am so SO SOOOO angry just thinking about it… it brings me to tears.

Savage's quote has been taken out of context and completely manipulated by people with anti-family agendas. He was talking about how autism, just like ADHD, is being hyped up in order to medicate children and in turn make more money for the corrupt pharmaceutical companies. He wants to educate people on this hysteria so that there is more care and funds available for the people who REALLY need it (read: actual children with autism) and so that misdiagnosed children are free from it.

I have a 13 year old cousin who is autistic and he has plenty of discipline, he doesn't get away with every little thing just because of his condition. This guy is a moron. Children can't help if they are autistic, they are not faking it to get sympathy. My uncle is not super easy on his son just because of his illness. He still has chores and school work. This man is a piece of crap. How dare he say that. He needs to be fired. And for all of you who are laughing and saying that he is probably right, you would not be saying that if you had an autistic child or had a relative that was autistic.
Children with autism and the families of children with autism live very difficult lives. My family is loving and close. We are good parents and responsible adults. Our niece has autism and we (especially her mommy) work with her everyday. Every decision made is relative to how she will handle it. People with autism and their families need so much support and definitely more help from the community. This kind of hate speech only hinders progress.
I think he's right. I work in a public school and the sheer number of kids diagnosed with autism in a building population of only 600 is staggering. There seems to be 1 kid in each classroom. I agree with Savage, they are just brats who don't get adequate parenting.

I really hate this guy. I have two very autistic sisters who are 14 and they are the most loving and funny girls on the planet. This ass fuck needs to get his facts together and actually know what hes talking about. If he spent even a half an hour with my sisters, he'd know that you just can't control them like that. Alright, I don't know why I'm bothering, but here goes: I'm appalled at the level of violent, hate-speech from people on here. Do any of you writing such horrible things think that this makes you any better than a man who said some misinformed, hateful things? Savages comments angered me too, and I'm sure if my children were autistic I'd be blazingly angry. But wishing and threatening violence is not going to change his mind, and it's actually worse than what the man said. Let's temper our passion for this topic with some wisdom so we can maybe help educate those that don't understand this condition.
One more thing: so many of you are confusing our overdiagnosage of ADD and ADHD with autism. I've been teaching music for years in the public schools, which means I see every student in two schools (1000 students right now). Every student I've seen that's diagnosed with autism is definitely autistic. Plus, there are several that I believe have at least Asperger's (if not full-out autism) who go undiagnosed. However, many students labeled as ADD or ADHD are misdiagnosed, and drug companies are to blame. I know that Dr. Savage did not say that autism does not exist, but, regardless of his degrees, he is still confusing autism with ADD and ADHD. He doesn't even seem to understand how autistic children behave. Many are completely withdrawn, and many never speak without intense therapy. Most parents of autistic children are using costly therapies (not drugs) and pay for them out of their pockets. I don't know where some of you are getting all these stats about tax dollars being spent on these children. I teach in the area of our schools that houses the classrooms of our children with severe disabilities (we're talking feeding tubes, diapers, completely non-verbal and immobile). My state just cut the jobs of most aides who changed those feeding tubes and diapers, and lifted those children into and out of those wheelchairs, while the aides in the regular classrooms kept their jobs. Where are those tax dollars now?

He's most certainly entitled to his point of view — and God Bless America for the Bill of Rights that makes it possible — but just as he's entitled to speak, I too am entitled to revoke my listenership. I didn't know my child had a problem but when he did not start talking at 12 months old, at 18 months old, by 2 years old, I knew there was a problem. He was diagnosed with PDD-NOS which is a form of autism. Not a parental issue, but an internal issue within my child. Please tell me how at 12 months old you are supposed to reason with a "brat" and tell them to grow up. With speech therapy and diligent work on the part of his father and I, he is now a thriving 5 year old with no issues whatsoever. All of you making negative comments have no idea. Someday it will all come back to you……

mommy #676 - if my baby started talking at 12 mos I would think he was possessed! Children develop at their own rate. I know several children that did not really start talking until they were almost 4 yo. Way to jump the gun and get some obscure diagnosis to calm your fears and put undo pressure on your child. PDD-NOS-DDT-ABC 99% of it is all bullshit. Could it possibly be that your precious is just "slow"? Pardon me, I guess I should use the word "special." Nobody has slow children anymore, their all geniuses with issues.

Apparently you are extremely uneducated as first of all, you cannot even tell the difference between autism and ADD and second of all, you obviously have no firsthand experience with children who truly suffer from either disorder. It's true that ADD is often times diagnosed too easily, however this does not diminish the difficulties of children who actually suffer from this learning disability. I thought it was bad when Jenny McCarthy started spouting off at the mouth claiming that she had the cure for every case of autism, just because her son was showing signs of improvement, but this man is obviously brain dead and anyone who agrees with him is just plain ignorant.

And yes coddling will not let the children reach their full potential, but, when you are diagnosed most children get help and are not just left alone.Being misbehaved is totally different from autism and anyone who knows, like you should, would be able to tell if they were just acting.I don't believe anyone would purposely lie about having this, no parent would wish this on their kids. i'd say their is misdiagnosis, but at a very low rate, not what this savage guy is saying.

This whole situation is unfortunate. Autism is over diagnosed. I have a late talking son who was diagnosed with autism and was remarkably "cured" once he started gaining speech. This is a GREAT debate, but unfortunately the mediator is an absolute idiot, and he did nothing to address this subject properly. Shame on him for making some of the statements that he did (which is cruel no matter if a child has autism or not) and for doing a disservice to those children and families who struggle dealing with autism.

some plp have alot of nerve…. i have a set a twin brothers who are both autistic. my father has done a wonderfull job of raising them both. and i can honesty say he cuts them NO slack and even with their disorder they are two of the best behaved children i know.

1. Dr. Savage is not uneducated, clearly one with a doctorate and multiple masters degrees is far from uneducated.
2. Ignorant? See above…but with one caveat. As I read most dissenters comments I couldn't believe the potty mouths. Is it that hard to disagree without using every profane word ever created? So, I suppose ignorance is in the eye of the beholder.
3. Dr. Savage is a multiple best-seller author on such subjects as politics, health, and natural healing. When he doesn't know the answer he contacts those who do.
4. Dr. Savage grew up with a severely mentally retarded brother whom he speaks and writes of often. He has championed the rights of those whom are unable to do so themselves.
5. My former fiance had a nephew diagnosed with autism. I was shocked as I could see the rapid transformation in his behavior when he was with his grandparents as opposed to his parents. I knew it was a farce even though I was not trained in the medical field.
6. What is wrong with being more conservative and straight to the point? The further down the PC road we go, the more we will be pushed by those cultures that do not have a place in thier society for diplomacy or PC.

He said that most children are misdiagnosed and since austism is diagnosed 800% more then it use to be, he's probably right.
