A Good American Boy

Rap superstar Kanye West and MTV VJ Sway Calloway recently gave three young vets who just returned from the Iraq war the surprise of their lives!

Kanye and Sway dropped in unexpectedly at the homes of the vets to listen to the soldiers' stories and express gratitude for their service.

MTV was there to capture the visits on camera (of course).

You can see all the powerful, moving moments from the visits on MTV, July 28th.

Kanye said, "There are hundreds of veterans out there who are falling through the cracks. They make the ultimate sacrifices for us by laying down their lives, but it seems like a lot of them just get forgotten about. I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people, but you can always do more. I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories. I went to their homes to listen and get their firsthand experiences. I wanted to hear their stories."

Kanye and Sway didn't just listen.

On behalf of MTV and the Dr. Donda West Foundation — named in honor of the rapper's late mother — the duo gave each veteran a life-changing gift, from paying off their debts to taking care of their rent or tuition.

God bless the US of Kanye (and MTV)!

Count how many times this ass uses the word "I". The only thing his music inspires is the continual revelation that record companies need to be abandoned for putting people like this overinflated egomaniac on the map.

Since when does Kanye West have a soul? And also, why did he have to bring MTV w/him to do a good deed?

I swear that this Kanye guy looks like he is retarded! Who does he remind me of?! Stevie Wonder? Could this guy get a mouth-reducing operation or something? Or if he just kept it closed he would look more intelligent, probably drool less.

The "country's finest" ARE DEFINIELY NOT OUR SOLDIERS. They are the country's lowest scum. They are criminals who kill for oil. You are married to a criminal.

Re: Tommy – Yes, they made a choice and many I know took the bonus to go to Iraq, but in the end it's up to the President (who is charge of the military) not to send troops into harms way unless it's necessary, and Iraq was not necessary. Auto manufacturers, airline industry ready to file bankruptcy, infurstructure falling apart, tax payers have to bail out fanny and freddie and the list goes on. The trillions this profit invasion is costing is not helping. America is in serious trouble and we need to unite as a country if were going to survive.

How about calling him a good American son, not a boy? He's a full grown man and, in case you didn't know, the term "boy" when used by a white person to describe a black man is condescending (at best).

hey tommy! so you're "sick of the troops" huh? let me enlighten you a bit. first, it's because of our troops that you're able to speak you're opinion. second, as an army wife i can assure you that the troops are NOT made of money by any means. we live paycheck to paycheck just like most people. third, people do get deployed for long periods of time. you're right about one thing. my husband, like thousands of others did sign up knowing that deployments happen. we certainly understand that and go through long deployments with pride, because he signed up to help serve our country. we don't whine or complain, even when things get tough. we don't expect help from civilians, but it sure is nice when someone says a simple "thank you for serving our country". while i am very sorry for you over the loss of your daughter, i can't sit back and not respond to your ignorant assumptions of the military. for that matter, you try being deployed while your wife or child goes through the ordeal of chemo. guess what idiot…it happens to us military folk too. the troops still carry on, knowing that their loved ones are in a battle for their lives back home, not knowing if they will be alive when they make it home. if you want do bash the war…go ahead, but don't you dare bash people like my husband who risk and lose theirs lives every day protecting YOUR freedom. think about that for awhile before you go insulting our proud soldiers and their proud families. freedom isn't free.

HONESTLY WHO CRES WHY HE DID, WHAT THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN WAS. HE DID IT. HE HELPED 3 PEOPLE THAT PUT THEIR LIVES IN DANGER AND WHO WE AND THE GOVERNMENT TEND TO FORGET. MORE PEOPLE NEED TO STEP AND THANK VETS FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS. THEY CHOSE TO SIGN UP AND SERVE OUR COUNTRY MOST NOT THINKING THAT THEY WOULD EVER SEE A WAR. JUST TO BETTER THEMSELVES, THEIR LIVES AND THEIR FAMILIES. LETS NOT FORGET THAT BECAUSE OF ALL OF THEM PAST AND PRESENT IS WHY WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SIT HERE AND BITCH ABOUT KANYE AND WHOEVER ELSE IS TOP ON THE GOSSIP LIST FOR THE MOMENT.
THANK YOU TO ALL SOLDIERS WHO HAVE SERVED OR ARE CURRENTLY SERVING OUR COUNTRY!

it's nice that they did this, but you don't always have to be filmed for MTV to do something nice, and i'm not talking just about Kanye. Would they still have done this if there hadn't been camera crews? Let's hope so and lets hope more vets get the help they need, on or off camera.

Yes, it's a lot easier "to care" when you have pre-arranged MTV camera crews to film and exploit your good deeds.
However, I do hope the veterans enjoyed the visit and am glad they were the recipients of having their "debts taken care of".
But, I can't help but wonder how much of the donated money came from Kanye's huge bank account and how much of it was paid for by MTV?

No Asian vets or white vets profiled….typical Kanye style.

  22. 122

Plain and simple - I don't like rap music, I can't name a single Kanye song, I wouldn't recognize him if he walked in my office this instant. But I do appreciate what he did. I'm white and female, and I don't care WHAT gender or race the soldiers were, I'm glad he did this. So he made his actions public? So what. As another poster suggested, maybe other celebrities will see this and make their own attempt at thanking our troops. It's just refreshing to read something positive about a celebrity for a change.

    Re: Tommy
I am sorry that your daughter died. But for you to say you are sick of the troops is an ignorant comment… my husband is in the reserves and went overseas to Iraq for a year to protect our country's freedom, including yours. Yes, he did sign up but that doesnt make deployment or death of a soldier any easier to deal with. If it wasn't for people volunteering to sign up and go overseas, our borders would be unprotected and there would be a draft that would force people to go. Dealing with your loved one being in a warzone for a year is not easy, and especially if you lose your loved one it affects you for the rest of your life, as Im sure you know. Then, when soldiers come back after missing a year at home its very hard to adjust to civillian life.

so agree with u… fuck the war and fuck the troops… u guys made ur choice to live that life… u could have just sat home and got a real job. this whole war is bullshit anyway… so fake… i cant stand soldiers they swear they are better than everyone cuz they made a "sacrifice"… fuck you i sacrifice everything i have for my family… when the country starts doing things for its people, then i can see supporting them… and of course these guys were black… kanye is such a backwards racist… george bush hates black people??? well u hate white people u dumb ass… im so over everyone worshipping these people who choose to get killed over seas and for worshipping kanye as well… imho

  27. dj060 says – reply to this

    127

    Re: karin

believe me karin, i'm more awake than you'll ever be apparently. you assume i must be a republican because i say freedom isn't free. guess what genius…your wrong. you want to say being in the military isn't a "real" job. it doesn't anymore get more real. if you think it's so easy, why don't you try it for awhile? you also assume all soldiers think they are better than every one. my husband and myself certainly don't think that, and in his 18 years of service we've never encountered any other soldiers or family members who think that way. what would our country be like if not for men who signed up to fight in wars such as the american revolution, WW1, WW2, etc? here's your answer…we'd be under the control of a dictator such as hitler, stalin, etc. we certainly wouldn't have the freedoms we have now, such as freedom of speech. whether or not our soldiers and families agree with this war doesn't keep them from going. that dotted line was signed long before, in most cases, to go defend our country wherever our government sent them. keep making all the assumptions you want about the government. you have the right to. we all do as americans because of millions of men throughout history to present day who stood up and fought for our freedom of speech, and all of the other freedoms that we have. don't insult our soldiers though. they didn't choose this war or any other one for that matter. they, just like you, are doing their jobs.
