Filed under: Exclusives! > Fashion Smashion > Media Minute > Anna Wintour

wintour.jpg

Vogue's revenues are falling downwards, but its main rival,Elle magazine, is whistling a different tune!

Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that Elle is about to have its biggest September issue ever.

At 420 pages, they're up 6.6% from last year.

It's the BIGGEST issue they've had, ad page wise.

Plus, their August issue is the fourth month in a row that they BEAT Vogue in ad pages.

Why is Elle kicking Vogue's ass in advertising sales?

What say you, fashionistas?

Anna Wintour's gonna have some explaining to do!

    Re: Luka – no kidding.

perez, what is the point of your site? you post news that has already circulated. your comments are biased against stars who snubbed you like Sam, Lindsay and Aniston

btw - how are online ads doing? why don't you talk about how online ads are not doing well? your site is a "hasbeen" that only did well because the popularity of blogging. Advertisers are slowly dropping low rate bloggers like you. You add no real content…just copy other sites. emkayeatsurlunch.

I'm curious, as a 28 year old married mom, What's Perez's demographic? Cause he makes it sound like he's talking to gays, but I wouldn't be suprised if much of his fans were straight females. I only ask because I have a feeling Perez isn't as popular in the gay community as he would like to have us believe.

Vouge is a timeless piece in american fashion history it should really change with the times and this means changing this so-called icon of fashion. people are looking for a new look and new feel and elle seems to do a good job in that either u look at a new direction to take Vouge or leave it as is. Time for a new-age Romanticism…

I'm a subscriber to Vogue and I did notice that August's issue has a lot less advertisements and articles. However, last year Vogue had their biggest fall fashion issue.

    113

As a longtime Vogue subscriber, I have to say that it has grown stale, especially in the last year. Same models, same stories. BORING. For example, this month (August) there is yet ANOTHER spread with Gisele Bundchen. TEN pages! I think she's okay, but a high fashion spread after her recent nude covers just doesn't work! So many more interesting, relatable girls on the scene.

Re: tara – you can check the general user #s on all of these sites. It's roughly…

    #1 TMZ
    #2 Perez
    #3 US Online
#4 D listed/Defamer/Pop Sugar are always tied for fourth place

However, advertisers don't just care about the highest #, they want to display their ads where they know they are getting quality traffic. PH is full of negative kids spouting off their mouth.

Read all the comment boards (hint: that's how advertisers pick their placements). You can tell right away the type of people that visit each site. TMZ makes the most money because their audience is considered more sophisticated ie more$$$ to spend. Notice how most of the comments are written well…

If you were an advertiser would you advertise with someone like PH who is attracting negative outcasts who never leave their house?

I love to point this out because PH likes to sit high on his horse making fun of Tara Reid and Jen Aniston when he is becoming just as much as a hazbeen. The funny part is that he is too dumb to realize it. He is a blogger not a serious business person. Just like Tara Reid is a party girl and not a serious actress

    122

Well, being fan of all both Elle and Vogue and also Harpers Bazzar there differences are slight but noticable. Vogue and Harpers are a little more mature and more fashion forward which they are known for. I think Elle can be a little more "light hearted" in comparison. In the last year though I feel all three are closer in competition then ever. I know I look forward to the coming months to see what they have in store for us!

  23. Angel says – reply to this

    123

Re: dunno – Very good summation! Advertisers will spend their $$ on mediums that reflect their product and the readers' buying power. Even if a high-end product (clothing, etc.) is aimed at the younger generation, the advertiser will more than likely choose TMZ because the readers are obviously more educated and therefor more likely to afford their product. I'm not trying to speak harshly about Perez's readers (just Perez himself!), but look at the majority of the comments that are left. Most seem as if they are written by some uneducated kid selling crack on a corner. Great job to the rest of you that can actually spell and have great comments though.

Why is it that when I see a woman in a fur coat she is always extremely unattractive?
Maybe that is how they started skinning animals. An ugly woman wanted to look better so she thought, hey, why not my put my cat around my neck…
When you have to try that hard, when you can't be pretty without a dead carcass on around your neck you're hurtin' girl.

Elle's articles are much better; their topics are more relevant and informitive. Vogue offers beautiful photography but not much more. When I see the cover stories of Elle, I'm interested, I want to read that magazine! But with vogue, not so much.

From the time I was 16 it was always Vogue for me but lately I have been buying both, and I have been finding that Elle just has more content and I look forward to it more each month. I think when my current subscription to Vogue runs out I will not renew it and will only buy it periodically at the newstand. I also think it is ridiculous that a subscription in canada is 60$ US per year. That is barely any savings from the newstand and it always arrives a week after it hits the newstand

Vogue is stuffy, bland, boring. Who honestly cares reading about these bourgeois Park Avenue hags, they're so bland and UNINTERESTING. It's been the same bland, patrician formula for too long and people are honestly tired of it. It is not relevant to our sometimes sexy, sometimes brutal but always DIVERSE reality.

I agree, Rachel Zoe should take over Vogue.

  42. moret says – reply to this

    142

It's not really a big surprise to me. Vogue's content has been slipping for the last ten years, while Elle has remained very consistent. Though they're not exactly ground breaking, they do keep up with burgeoning talent in both the fashion and entertainment industries….and just to be clear…I don't work for either publication. (I wish)

That's because American Vogue sucks. It's all about French Vogue and Italian Vogue. Anna Wintour is boring and old. She's also not as hip as say Elle Magazine is or W , Dazed, POP, and V. Anna has made American Vogue was to aristocratic. Harpers is cool too more polished than say Vogue.

  45. 145

Simple. Elle is commercial crap, while Vogue is high fashion. P.S. Vogue still has 675 pages of advertisement for our upcoming september issue, higher than Elle

    146

All fashion magazines are as boring as hell. Pages and pages and pages of advertisements featuring products 99% of readers could never afford to buy. A few photo shoots of cadaverish looking models in ridiculous poses and even more ridiculous clothing. The odd feature article thrown in for good measure. I used to look at the odd one in Borders while having a coffee so I didn't have to pay for it. Now even that isn't enough to attract me.

Vogue is a throwback to the 1950s… too conservative and stuffy. Compare current issues with anything from the 1940s or 1950s, you can barely see any difference. They think moribund = classic.

Elle is trendier, edgier, and all around more FUN to flip through.

ELLE uses people the public gives a damn about. It doesn't have that elitist, snobby attitude. The content is interesting. It doesn't use manface skeleton Gisele and that ugly Russian model Natalie for every photo spread/cover. Elle puts people other than skinny, anrogynous white women on its cover. Wintour needs to retire.

  52. upper says – reply to this

    152

i am in fashion school and although vogue is classic and will never go away - it seems to only pertain to the wealthy and elite. elle reaches all types of people and all classes….you don't have to be rich to find something in vogue that you could actually buy…vogue just makes me depressed that i can't afford the stuff in there…i get tired of wanting!!!! elle lets me have.

vogue is always the same old, same old!! same old articles about the same old bags written by the same old bags. old bags meaning old hags!! elle has new, fresh, hot stuff in the issues and has gorgeous and perfectly dressed/made up people on the cover! every cover is AMAZING unlike vogue who still for some freakish and unknown reason puts kate fucking moss on the cover, as if shes actually special or cover-worthy!! bitch is the ad-girl!!! the fugly and old ad-girl!! it is beyond me why designers continue to choose her to represent their brands! kate is OLD NEWS. elle is new, fresh.. love it. -from a true fashionista/fashion student & lover

  58. BlueE says – reply to this

    158

Hmm… What is wrong with Vogue? How about the weird fashion spreads with all of the direct copies of runway trends? Where are the interpretations of these trends that actual people can wear without looking foolish.

Where is all of the color, funky jewelry, unique items, and beautiful fashion spreads that are meant to inspire its readers?

Elle has great articles on fashion forward actresses, singers, ect. Vogue has Gwenyth Paltrow. Zzzzzzzzzz…

Kate Moss is "old hat". Where is the new? Where is all of the fun?

Enticing potential subscribers with pleather bags. Lol is that even fashion?!?!

Unique fashion is dying. I am tired of the recycled bohemian, nautical, minimalist, safari, dolly, looks.

    Re: Angel
everything you write about ELLe is the same for Vogue in terms of ad pages …not to mention every other book in the category and in print. that's why pages are used as a measure vs dollars which obviously are all over the place depending on circulation size. Elle increased it's ratebase in 2008 (I know I'm a student hugely interested in this ) and more for their Sept issue (see their online media kit) and I guarantee you that their ad dollars are up — percentage wise — more than their increase in pages.

It's easy. It's an ugly magazine. The color & fonts… the old school red … it's old looking. No one under the age of 30 cares about it anymore. They need to do a redesign. It doesn't look classy, it looks dated. The red lettering is the worst though… seriously…GET A NEW ART DIRECTOR! AND NEW CD. Get rid of the old woman look.

LOL! I read that headline and immediately got that old song in my head, "Face down, ass up! That's the way we like to fuck!" lol, good times…
Anyway, I stopped reading vogue a couple of years ago. Sometimes they have an interesting article on plastic surgery or skin, but their layouts are so tired and cold. There really is a cold, sterile vibe to their editorials. ugh. I've actually replaced it with Elle and it has nothing to do with Project Runway. (I can't stand that editor-at-large former fashion director, ugh!) I love their layouts and there is way more stuff that actually appeals to me. Green (eco-friendly) jewelry that is decently affordable - and a lovely shade of green comes to mind. I mean really, since when has vogue done that? Maybe they have. I haven't read it in awhile. Then there was Leon's choice of dress for Hudson and that sealed it. Gone. I worshipped that mag back in high school circa 2000. Then I went to W and now I'm on to Elle. Still love W.

Vogue sucks, I've loved it since I was 12, but now it is so out of touch. Case in point: their "Cheap Chic: Strategies for Shopping the Trends on a Budget” was a fucking joke. The cheap items were each coming in just under $500. Oh yeah and some "cheap" tees at $100. Fuck you Anna Frigid Wintour. Are you kidding? You can get a great shaped tee for $10 at Target that looks just like your $100 Marc by Marc Jacobs shit. Nothing that Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough have ever made is interesting or beautiful, but because Anna wants to out them on a leash and have them as her pets, we readers have to look at there played, derivative Proenza Shouler shit. Charles Townsend should read the writing on the wall and dump Anna, we need someone like Carine Roitfeld to bring US Vogue into the 21st Century.

    181

Most magazines are down because it is all about the internet. I just don't think Anna Wintour is great for the Vogue brand - to many she represents over the top excesses. That currency is rapidly declining in value because it is becoming more and more irrelevant. Vogue needs to become more relevant if it wants to stay competitive. Perhaps a more relevant editor would do that? Just my thoughts and more at www.melissaseymour.blog.com ;)

  82. Emily says – reply to this

    182

Why? Because Elle is not writing purely to stroke the ego of the elite, it is written for the masses with a up-town flare. It is smart, provocative and well-rounded. Elle is a lifestyle magazine for the sophisticated, intelligent woman. I personally buy over Vogue because of it's articles. Never once have I stopped to read an article in Vogue, generally I look through the layouts and read a few captions, but they cater to a life I do not lead. Elle, on the other hand, gives excellent book and film reviews, they include style choices I can afford and they do not make me feel like a fish out of water.

Well, Vogue is just classic and very perfect, but it's a magazine that deals more with the historical and political aspects of fashion. Elle is like a splash of ice water, like someone took a lovely Chanel suit and threw hot pink paint over it…which is not at all a bad thing. Besides, Vogue is kinda hard to get into sometimes, in the aspect that it feels like a very exclusive club. Elle is really welcoming and warm, I feel…I'd pick up Vogue for the gorgeous pictures, but I read Elle from cover to cover. Xo

well, anna wintour did a great job while she could. now she's past her prime, ready for retirement. vogue is ok - but please no more covers with gwynneth. elle is great (please with exception to the stupid "green" issue - which is bullshit - they advertise diamonds, but call the issue "green" - diamonds are everything but ecologically friendly) ANYWAY, everything has a shelf life and it looks like vogue has had its life and now elle is stepping up.

good i hope that fur wearing heartless bitch loses all her money and is forced to spend the rest of her life begging for food and hopefully dies a pitiful death from all the animals deaths she supports.

the day always come when the old ugly fur hag will die…. that day she'll get what she deserves

she can say and do whatever she thinks is hot in fashion but she's like 80 so nothing looks good on her anyways.

    puke!

of course American vogue is down… fashion is about designers and models and clothes and beauty and she focuses on celebrities, which, fashionistas could care less about. Anyone who is serious about fashion HATES American vogue. It's all about British and Italian and Paris vogue, these magazines are serious about fashion and actually have MODELS on the cover.

In high school, I thought Vogue was the shit! Then I got a free subscription to Elle for 4 months. At first I thought that readers who would call it the best fashion zine had it wrong but then realized that it was the best magazine ever! It is more accessible than Vogue but it still features a lot of high fashion and young emerging talent. there are articles about relationships, politics, celebrities, plastic surgery, and not just one celeb article like in other magazines. I only wish they'd stop putting people like Jessica (Alba and simpson, Posh, Lindsay) on their covers!
