Vogue's revenues are falling downwards, but its main rival,Elle magazine, is whistling a different tune!

Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that Elle is about to have its biggest September issue ever.

At 420 pages, they're up 6.6% from last year.

It's the BIGGEST issue they've had, ad page wise.

Plus, their August issue is the fourth month in a row that they BEAT Vogue in ad pages.

Why is Elle kicking Vogue's ass in advertising sales?

What say you, fashionistas?

Anna Wintour's gonna have some explaining to do!

Re: cindy – hell yeah!! I prefer Elle over Vogue but so far I've bought 1 Elle and 2 Vogue magazines from Britain at Barnes & Noble and I think I'm going to be buying more! It”s just so much better to have models on magazine covers as they take beautiful pictures and that way we'll no longer have actresses losing loads of weight and trying to be models. I guess Tyra is right!!

Re: Danno – That's my main complaint about Elle! It's cool to have young women on the cover like Rihanna but they need to put more mature women on the cover too! It's been years since I've seen Cate Blanchett on the cover and except for Madge and Posh this year I believe that all the other cover girls have been under the age of like 27! I just hope they can wait at least 4 years to put Hannah montana on the cover!

It's really quite ironic that she was ever the head-anything of Vogue. Even if she hadn't constantly worn ridiculously dead furs or had the nose of El Toro Relajo, she'd still have looked asymmetrically fucking batshit insane.

"A trillion pox on these curse-ed eyes", she screamed from her deathbed in the Waldorf penthouse at the peasants below, wading so pissantly through Park Avenue, 50 years after she'd ever expected, nay; hoped, to so luxuriously travail, of course.

Along the funeral procession, it was reported that Snejana had been spotted weeping hysterically as she laid incapacitatedly drunken in a Midtown gutter.

The fashion world would keep goin' ’round.

Anna Wintour would have been 173 years old Thursday.

I'll tell you why…because Vogue is mostly advertisements and the pics they do have are high but strange fashion no normal person can wear. Also, they have stupid "about town" gossip about upper-crust New Yorkers who only care that they get their name mentioned in a magazine. Elle on the other hand, has substance, interesting and useful tips and articles, and some of the clothes and accessories regular people can buy and wear. Vogue is one of the only fashion magazines I don't subscribe to.

  12. 212

Vogue is about the cuting edge of fashion, showing all the VERY expensive stuff and prices are nowhere to be seen in the magazine.

Meanwhile, ELLE gives the reader different pathes to follow in order to stay in fashion without paying the huge bills and the prices are detailed which is an important fact to me.

I have subscriptions for BOTH magazines.
    I prefer VOGUE because
    "don't U stand There
    Strike The Pose
    There's NOTHING 2 it
    VOGUE "

Nope, VOGUE makes me dream more than ELLE, especially on haute couture.

i feel that even though vogue will always be the timeless classic magazine that everyone looks up to for cotoure and elegance, Elle is more edgy and going out of the box, and thats the way fashion has been recently. I Vogue will always be in my heart as the primary fashion magazine, i just feel that Elle is relatable to the younger crowd and 20 somethings. Anna needs to revamp Vogue

Elle is Vogue's rival?!!?? You can't begin to compare the two! Vogue is the QUEEN, Elle a mere subject. Are you kidding? Vogue is…Vogue is the BEST. It's just a bad financial time we're all having until The Messiah gets to be the world leader (not).

i know i'm not the most fashionable female on earth, but i'm surprised no one mentioned the three fashion mags that i subscribe to: cosmo, instyle, and vanity fair. that's probably boring to you fancy people, but they're my touchstones and they work well for a lot of us peasants. let's face it, vogue is global top shelf, specially made for people who never worry about money. regarding the edgier titles, it's fun to see allure make angelina look like less of a chupacabra or see v make courtney look like less of a baglady, although i adore them both anyway.

I think it all has to do with their target audience and who they put on the cover. Last month, Mary-Kate was on the cover and the photos were beautiful of her and the article was fantastic. Vogue had Nicole Kidman on the cover to promote some new movie I've never heard of. And who are young people more interested in? Nicole Kidman who saw her day 20 years ago or Mary-Kate who is seeing her day now with being on Weeds and starring in The Wackness? Obviously younger people are buying these magazines. The numbers tell all. Elle has Mariah Carey on the cover-her target audience has always been trashy young tweens since I was born in 1986.

  27. 227

kate moss dressed like a librarian-0 points vogue

Vogue has a place in fashion history but it's old and stuffy at this point. I stopped subscribing because of this. Their covers are also manipulated to a point that the people on them don't resemble real people any longer. Anna Wintor may be also sticking with a signature style (bob and sunglasses) but she also looks dated…..very 80's. The layout is also a mess and very old school. Elle is fresh and more relevant. Vogue needs to wake up and get real.

You've sent everyone at Vogue trembling under their desks — awaiting the arrival and WRATH of Hurricane Anna. Thanks a lot for making the morning and our stomachs get off to a shitty start.

Just so that you know, ad sales do not reflect the true dollar amount. Please dig up some dollar comparisons btwn Elle and Vogue and post them.

    Thanks.

Maybe because Vogue stopped being about fashion a while ago. It's U.S. edition has become quite pathetic, focusing on celebrities and "now" people. Couture should still be its thrust. It's Italian and French versions still remain superb, though; Vogue Italia's July issue is an all-black beauty issue that highlights real fashion icons. Grace Jones, Iman, Jody Watley and Naomi Campbell all appear in magnificent splendor. Had this concept repeated with the U.S. edition of Vogue, they would've gotten this totally wrong, showcasing "now" people like Rihanna (gag), Beyonce (spew) and so forth. They need to get back to basics!

Pretty simple: Robbie Myers is a better editor than Anna Wintour. It all comes down to who's running the show, and Robbie rocks Anna hard. All Anna wants to do is play tennis in the Hamptons.

elle is not vogue's "rival"–since this is a highschool football game.

the only "rival" the vogue has or will ever have is bazaar

never metion fashion again–you live in LA for fucks sake that should be enough reason for you to know you have no right to an opinion.

  40. nrich says – reply to this

OK!! basically Elle shows u 'how to dress' and Vogue just shows you the current trends. lyk for example Elle will be lyk Lace is a big trend for a/w09 and then they'll give u examples of ready to wear pieces in Lace, as well as a write up on how to accesorise ur outfit. Whereas Vogue only tells you what trends are currently 'in' and give u lots of example from the catwalk. :) :)

i bet more than half these comments come form people who dont even wear the shit seen in vogue. vogue is very expensive when i walk outside the house theres like 20% of people on the streets that actually dress like that. most people buy cheap knockoffs from wet seal. so in conclusion 80% of these comments are worth shit.

  42. YoMam says – reply to this

    242

Ad page wise it is because Elle and their main company Hachette are known to give away ad pages at deep discounts or buy 1, get 1 free. Whereas Conde Nast, owner of Vogue doesn't discount and has outrageous ad page costs. You do the math.

I thought this would happen when Vogue started using rediculous actors and tough atheletes on the cover. Vogue is supposed to be a fashion magazine and should stay with models not child actors. American Vogue sucks, have a look at Paris Vogue or any of the other countries.

Re: Alexa – I agree. My main complaint about Vogue is all the pages devoted to New York socialites who I care nothing about. Ièm not interested in the parties they go to, who they are marrying or who came to the wedding; what they are buying off this seasons runway; what they wore to which event etc. It is not relevant to me and it is not inspiring. I want to be inspired, and Betty Blueblood whose Great-geat-great grandfather secured for her a life of perpetual wealth and privilege does not do it for me.

I'd like to see the ad revenue from Elle - if they are still giving steep discounts to get more ad pages they're not really up are they?
Paging is not as good an indicator as ad revenue.
420 pages - I promise you, even if Vogue is down from last year (which was the biggest September issue ever I believe) there will still be more than 420 ad pages.

    Re: AnnaWintour
both magazines are insensitive to animals by featuring fur, so I wouldn't buy them. All for none other but good old fashioned green - MONEY
Lets face it, "where are all the advertisers?" "why is no one reaaady?" …

You care more about the numbers, than using your power for something positive. You COULD make a statement and you chose not to. It wouldn't kill you to show more Stella McCartney and to make as statement to the fur industry by not showing fur at all. You would still live.
The animals grow up inside small cages, just to have a six inch stick shoved up their butts with 60v exploding thier insides…have you witnessed this? You should. Maybe then you would have the guts to be a REAL editor who takes responsibility. THERE IS A LIFE AFTER THIS ONE where you won't have to be a coward. Animals are born in captivity and they die in captivity, then VOGUE parades the results of these murders , loves the designers, such amazing talent! Wow. In every color!
I'm am truly impressed at the integrity of the magazine. Can't you tell?

Please be responsible, you've lived long enough to know BETTER and I know you have people to answer to, but at the very least don't wear fur yourself. Don't promote this abusive cruel practice. Also it doesn't make you look any better, truly, I've seen better pictures of you without a carcass oaround your neck.

I used to work in ad sales at Vogue and many times advertisers would complain quietly that Vogue looked boring and old and the same but we were told to just force them to buy a page because it was vogue.
I'm glad the industry is finally standing up to vogue and anna and saying outloud that it's awful and oldlady and lazy. Its time for a change.
And Elle has never looked more fresh and interesting and different. I don't work at Vogue or Elle but you can guess which one I subscribe to.

Re: lola – "and you still an ugly cruel tacky bitch". Hey where did that come from? The topic is fashion magazines, particularly "Vogue" and "Elle". My opinion is that they are a take. Magazine revenue is all about amount of advertising content rather than circulation. That's why these mags are just about all ads. Even articles which seem to be genuine on the surface usually reveal themselves to be ads in disguise, hence the coining of the term "advertorial". How stating my opinion on fashion mags (even if it differs from yours) turns me into an ugly, cruel, tacky bitch is beyond me. Maybe you need to look at yourself and work out why you need to insult a person merely for expressing an opinion. Calling me "ugly" is predictable, and ridiculous when you don't even know what I look like! I'm surprised you didn't say I was fat as well. "Cruel" doesn't even make sense. Oh, I'm so hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

elle is less stuffy than vogue and has more articles that younger people want to read. vogue even managed to make kate moss look like an upitty socialica on their aug cover.

  60. Trici says – reply to this

    260

Interesting to see those numbers. I recently canceled my own subscription to Vogue and subscribed to Elle instead because, as others have said, Vogue feels very old and stuffy these days (don't know what happened to it; I adored it five years ago) while Elle feels fresh and relatable. Obviously, Vogue still sets the bar fashion-wise, but if they want this reader back they should write more articles we young, forward-thinking women can relate to and less about socialites with whom I can't identify at all.

Elle and Vogue both suck. Joe Zee is a lame stylist who can only do stubby celebreties. American Vogue is stuck in a horribly boring rut and will stay there until Anna is ousted. Try French and Italian Vogue or V magazine for good fashion editorials.
