As we mentioned earlier this week, homophobe and hate monger Michael Savage completely trashed all autistic children and their parents on his radio show recently.
Most memorably when he said "I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”
And now, finally, some radio stations are fighting back.
Making a step in the right direction is Mississippi.
Steve Davenport, head of the Super Talk network in Mississippi, called Savage's remarks "beyond inexcusable."
The network of seven stations has announced they will no longer carry Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, after his ridiculous remarks.
Davenport continues, “Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show have been cancelled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations,”
Savage has also lost a major advertiser for his program in AFLAC insurance.
A statement released by the company says, “AFLAC has a strong commitment to helping children through the AFLAC Cancer Center and AFLAC foundation. We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.”
Savage on the other hand is trying to validate what he said.
On his website, Savage writes, “My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as ‘autistic.’”
But if that were the case, why would he say that the problem with most autistic kids is that "They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says "We are asking him to be fired and we want to make advertisers aware of what he is broadcasting.”
What do U think should happen?
I get this who 'free speech' rant you all keep saying, but this went a little too far. I suppose its just dandy for everyone to get on the radio and talk about and say horrible things like fucking retards, homos, ni***rs, spics, wetbacks, honkeys…etc.
I think there is a difference between freedom of speech and taking it way to far. And this is one example. Its also an example of a horribly ignorant person talking about something he knows NOTHING about.

Do any of you know what a child needs to go through to get "labelled"? Parents usually ignore and are in denial when a child suffers from a disability like autism. A child has to go through several evaluations and needs to be diagnosed by a dr before he/she can even receive any type of interventions. It's not like you can go to a school and say that your child is autistic and automatically receive support.
I think people are quick to medicate their children for ADD and ADHD…and I bet that's what that moron Savage was thinking about.
By the way, I should clarify that I am a board certified therapist with many years experience working with autistic children and children who have psychiatric issues. By the way, most often the "psychiatric issues" these children have are shitty parents who are not interested are incapable of raising their children.

Clearly, you've not been to our school district. If the parents make enough threats, the kids get services. It's a fairly moneyed district, so the district will massage the numbers to appease these parents.
In comparison to some of the DC inner-city districts, I find it interesting that our special-ed numbers are so disproportionately high with so-called "autistic" kids. As much of a jerk as he is, I am glad that Savage has given voice to those of us whose kids are regularly being victimized by the "autistic."

I have a younger sister who has Asberger's, a form of Autism that is high functioning but affects social skills, ability to read emotion, causes extremely high intelligence. I love my sister very much and she has struggled with autism, but has also learned to live with and conquer it. When she and I were looking at the site and we heard the comments made by "Mr." Savage, we were both apalled. My sister said at the time she was so angry she felt like her "lungs were constricted". I am apalled that this ignorant man opened his ignorant mouth and made such uneducated, absurd and DISRESPECTFUL comments about so many amazing kids. If you've never had a family member affected by autism, if you've never experienced their behavior, don't just assume you know why they are the way they are. He makes me furious.

Autism is a very broad disorder, the problems and behaviors experienced by one child may be completly different from the other. I have an autistic child, and he has both his mother and father around. I feel VERY strongly that what Savage said was terribly misinformed. But at the same time, this is America. If we demand that he be fired for what he says, that is a form of censorship. Let the court of public opinion be the judge. We all know he is homophobic, insensitive, doesn't research or fully understand issues he spouts off about. The more he keeps this up the more listeners he loses, the more advertisers he loses. The market will make him irrelevant. But censorship is BAD for everyone. We have to allow voices we don't like or agree with. Its essential for a stable functional democracy.

he is a jerkoff. people are entitled to their opinions, but i'm sick of people thinking they are entitled to their own facts. in a way, he's right. there are MANY truly autistic people out there. however, i believe from experience at a early childhood ed. facility that it is GROSSLY over-diagnosed. some conditions that lie within the normal continuum of human behavior are being called autistic or adhd. every boy at the school was supposedly add/adhd or autistic. i only met one that really seemed like he was disabled. a lot of them DID use that diagnosis as an excuse to act like brats. you don't have to like it, but it's true. people need to stopping trying to "give" people self-esteem–that is where all of these behavioral issues began. this generation has been screwed by their parents and society. good luck people!

But if the context of his statement is as you say it is, then it's seems perfectly reasonable. It may be empirically wrong; but it is certainly logical based on the context you and he seems to be taking his statement in.
I don't think he should be fired he should just educate himself and apologize to all the people he hurt. I'm going to do what I did before and not listen to his show…

I have to agree with Savage. The rates of autism are much higher than they had been in the past. At first, everyone wanted to blame it on the mercury that is in the vaccines, but even after mercury was taken out of the vaccines, autism rated continued to climb just as they had before. It has more to do with the widening of the criteria by which autism is diagnosed. There are definetely people who have autism, but many of them are just kids who didn't/don't receive enough attention from their parents.
