Savaged!

savage2.jpg

As we mentioned earlier this week, homophobe and hate monger Michael Savage completely trashed all autistic children and their parents on his radio show recently.

Most memorably when he said "I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

And now, finally, some radio stations are fighting back.

Making a step in the right direction is Mississippi.

Steve Davenport, head of the Super Talk network in Mississippi, called Savage's remarks "beyond inexcusable."

The network of seven stations has announced they will no longer carry Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, after his ridiculous remarks.

Davenport continues, “Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show have been cancelled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations,”

Savage has also lost a major advertiser for his program in AFLAC insurance.

A statement released by the company says, “AFLAC has a strong commitment to helping children through the AFLAC Cancer Center and AFLAC foundation. We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.”

Savage on the other hand is trying to validate what he said.

On his website, Savage writes, “My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as ‘autistic.’”

But if that were the case, why would he say that the problem with most autistic kids is that "They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”

John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says "We are asking him to be fired and we want to make advertisers aware of what he is broadcasting.”

What do U think should happen?

Shit happens - so does free speech… Turn the dial.

… and, if the other media outlets hadn't plastered it everywhere most people wouldn't give a hoot.

As a classroom teacher who has worked with autistic kids, I am disgusted by what this idiot has said. It's ignorance like this that has caused social issues like racism and discrimination to occur. I hope that he loses his job and feels as much pain as he's caused to parents of autistic children.

Michael Savage is the king of all media!!! He should be on more radio stations. Love him. People are just frightened by the truth and want to hide from it. Team Savage!!!

    207

This is to the responders who think that because Michael Savage has a PHD that he knows what he's talking about: He earned master's degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and a Ph.D. from the UC Berkeley, in nutritional ethnomedicine. (The study of traditional medine - accupuncture, homeopathy ect). He is not a medical doctor or neurologist. He is only an expert on herbal medicine and traditional medicine. He does not have the education or knowledge is diagnosis autism - something he is doing when he calls the kids with autism morons and brats. Would you go to an anthropologist for your cancer treatment? Well, according to your way of thinking, they are qualified to give it.

As for the free speech arguments, you're right he has a right to free speech! And the free market, made up of his radio sponsors can sensor it by pulling their support. He will still be free to post blogs and call autistic kids fakers, wish aids and death upon gay people, as he did before MSNBC fired him, and insult those with parkinson's disease. His sponsors have just as much right to free speech by cutting him off.

Are you kidding. Don't act innocent Perez. You are at the root of most anger to begin with. You are simply spreading your hate (opinion) and hiding it under the umbrella of lazy journalism. Give me a break. Oh and in the future try to come up with your own original stories instead of taking what is given to you on a silver platter and adding your own hype to make it more juicy (stir up the pot to further your own agenda). Try creating your own opinion for once instead of trying to be the first to regurgitate what others assume. Oh wait, then again that is what you do all day.

You all should be ashamed of yourself if you do not think that what this man has said is despicable. Autism and ADD are two completely different disorders, and any doctor with a right mind, or a degree is sure not to misdiagnose a child that runs around and is a brat with autism. Go to webmd and look up the symptoms for Autism. Perez, you should find this man's contact information and post it. He's scum and should be told so.

You know what BUNNY, @#$% You!!! My sign is diagnosed with autism and I didn't smoke or drink while I was pregnant. I don't blame it on his vaccinations either. I thank God that he only has a mild case while some parents aren't so fortunate. He is loving, attentive, and caring. He only has trouble communicating. He doesn't misbehave because of this either. Get some education on a subject before you start trash talking and calling people idiots. Not all children with disorders on the autism spectrum are "unruly bad kids" who just need discipline. That being said, the asshole on the radio can say whatever he wants and be allowed to do so. It doesn't mean people have to listen.

I am pissed that he hasn't been fired yet!!! He's a MORON and why hasn't he been fired like Don Imus was when he made those insensitive remarks about the womens basketball team? He's not even picking on people who can stand up to him, he's a Coward! He's now back peddling because he doesn't want to lose his job over his comments. I have a child with Aspergers(high functioning Autism) and my son DOES have a father around. Due to being diagnosed by an Autism Dr. at 2 1/2 for not talking, he got all the services and therapy he needed. He is now 7 1/2 and is talking and in a regular class doing way better due to early intervention. Savage was also trying to say on CNN, that parents are recieving money after there child is diagnosed with Autism. That's bogus. Parents do not get the money, it's the therapists that do Jackass! He also said that parents of Autistic children are over medicating them, that's a lie because Autism can't be masked with a drug…. I hope people like Jenny McCartney, Shaka Khan, Holly Robinson Pete, Dan Marino and other celebrities who have also been affected by Autism use their voice to speak out against his BS… Is he a parent? Does he know what it is like to get the news that your child may never talk or be independent?

    213

If you idiots would listen to the ENTIRE broadcast, you would understand what he's saying. Instead, you take what your liberal media gives, and that is clips and snips of parts of the conversation. WAKE UP!!!!! He's saying that we should give the truly autistic children all the resources, doctors, and financial help that they need. He's saying that the doctors have over/missed diagnosed so many children as being autistic when they probably aren't autistic. The education sector has also jumped on the "autistic" bandwagon. This provides these people/organizations with more funding! It's the same deal when someone claims they have a disability to get a government check. They're not really ill, but they scam the system to get the funds. It's the same concept but it unfortunatlely is in the autistic community. I have a 2 year old that is behind by 6-8 months developmental wise. He's NOT autistic, BUT he's put in the AUTISM SPECTRUM!!!! It's all about the funding people. Michael is a smart man, listen to him, he tells it like it is and isn't PC.

  17. Sarah says – reply to this

    217

His comments, as well as many left here are disgusting. Anyone who has ever met a children with autism knows that there is NO way to "fake it". Also children with autism aren't "medicated" there are no pills to improve their condition. There is a barrier between them and the rest of the world. They aren't bad kids, they don't have behavior problems. The truly don't understand simple directions and in order to function normally in society they need to be in specialized programs that can teach them skills. Also this is not a way that doctors are just "labeling" kids. Most kids can't even get into the program I work for because no doctor will diagnose them. I do think that he should be able to give his opinion but it was an incredibly ignorant one

We do everything we can to support her and help her with her behaviour and social skills. She is going to have a tough life, but we are there with her all the way, setting boundaries for her and providing her with love and support. Also, there is no official aetiology for autism. GET A LIFE AND GET A CLUE. Stop picking on the innocent kids and their parents. You have no idea what it is like to raise a child with autism and we do the very best we can!

    230

I have a masters in autism and am a special ed teacher and think his comments were COMPLETELY taken out of context. What he was saying, is a very valid problem we are experiencing currently in the field. Autism is a dsiability that is very hard to diagnose, and there are many autism-like symptoms that don't neccessarily qualify someone for full blown autism. They recently have changed the name to "autism spectrum disorder" to include all of these signs of autism and place it all under the same umbrella, which has increased the amount of people identified. Savage was arguing, what we also agree needs arguing as people in the field- its alarming that rates of autism have increased so much, and the testing to qualify needs to be researched. He believes some students are being "qualified" as autism without necessary testing which is TRUE. Now that there is such a spectrum, they are just putting kids through the special ed system. Savage isn't calling out the people with autism, he is calling out the system sometimes, wrongly identifing them.

    Re: lilz
I'm not agreeing with what Savage said, but he does have a medical background although he's not a physician. He has two master's degrees (medical anthropology and something else similar to it) and a Ph.D in nutrition. Again, I'm not saying he's qualified to be a physician or give medical advice, but it's not fair to say he has no medical background.

The part I find ironic though is that, people make affirmative claims about health and nutrition all the time and seldom to never get attacked about it. But make a negative claim and boy does the fury start. He has just as much basis to make his claims as those do that blame Autism on vaccines so it's strange that there's not near the outrage for those folks. Unlike his comments, which hurt nothing more than people's sensibilities, the folks peddling the anti-vaccination stuff are causing many children to get hurt - both the ones not vaccinated and the ones that are affected by them.

He's a freaking radio show host and people should factor that in when determing whether or not to take him seriously. The truth is, most people that are mad about this are simply mad b/c they dislike him. If Michael Moore said the same thing, most of those defending him would be criticizing him and those criticizing him would be defending Moore. How silly.

first, BUNNY…..you are very IGNORANT. I did not drink or smoke while I was pregnant and I do not believe that vaccines cause autism, but I still have a child that is autistic. Maybe you should read up before you say stupid stuff. I wish it was about "controlling" my kid. But since you know so much about the subject then you already know that NOT all autistic kids have behavioral problems, and I would do anything not to have this diagnosis. DUMB ASS!

Savage has every right to say what he wants to say. People have every right to be offended by it and demand he get fired. And radio stations have every right to not air what he says if they don't want him broadcasting under their name. This country has no shortage of stupid, hateful people, so this man will always have an audience, and will always find stations to let him broadcast his little hate show. His free speech rights are in no danger. And he's probably very happy that so many people are now talking about his stupid ass.

to you people who are suggesting that he be fired, or lose his advertisers… why aren't you doing the same for Perez? He is a hate monger, but yet you don't think it's a problem when he says negative things. Just because you don't agree with what Savage says, doesn't mean he should be fired or censored — and then it's ok for others, who you happen to agree with to speak hate. It's all or nothing people. The world doesn't and shouldn't revolve around what you personally think is right an wrong! Everyone has a right to their thoughts and opinions, no matter who it hurts, just like Perez, RIGHT??

He absolutely has the right to say that stuff. I have the right to not listen. I am a teacher and there are truly autistic kids I see in the classroom. Yes, too many kids are on meds for ADD/ADHD- but truly autistic kids live in their own worlds through no fault of their parents or their own. Research is getting much better about autism- there is most likely a genetic link

What ever happened to having an OPINION? We can call eachother RETARDS and make fun of other disabilities for the sake of a chuckle, but God forbid we have an opinion that people can actually disagree with! And for the radio stations that are trying to ban his show… F off Retards!! By the way, there is some, if not alot, of truth. My kids remain un-immunized because of all the garbage that still remains in some vaccines!

Yes….there is free speech in America….but all that means is he can't be PROSECUTED in a court of law for what he says. Free speech means that he can say what he believes….but he should know that there are consequences for his actions. What he said about Autistic children was 100% wrong…morally speaking and medically too. The communtiy that listens to him has a right to speak out against that. His advertisers have a right to drop him. Next time, maybe he'll research the topic that he's discussing rather than making blatently false statements.

I wonder if Michael Savage would have never said what he said, knowing that most people would react violently? Maybe he should have kept it to himself - I think most people would (secretly) agree that MOST (not all) kids are absolute spoiled brats these days. I can count on one hand how many great kids I've met (family and friend's kids) - most will make your blood boil. This nation is full of brats and parents who think being their kids "best friends" is acceptable (I weep for the future).

everyone has a right to an opinion - even if it is grossly misinformed and stupidly idiotic. Journalists, however, have a responsibility to express themselves with an open mind and michael savage has not done that.

Michael Savage is entitled to free speech, and his sponsors are entitled to do with their advertising dollars as they see fit. This is a problem that will work itself out through the free market system. If his speech is so inflamatory that his advertisers don't want to be associated with it, then they have the right to pull their spots. If the stations don't have enough sponsors, they won't carry his show. It is the american way. Michael Savage's fans who are posting here seem that they only support his right to speech, not his sponsors'. They will excersize their free speech rights though their support or lack of.

  86. 286

First off, we live in a country where we should have the right to say how we feel…It's America….land of the free. Just because we may not agree with his thoughts doesn't mean we have to get all pissed off. Ignore it….turn the other station on. Who flippin cares…he said some stupid off handed comment but it doesn't mean he should lose his job over it. People are way to sensitive these days. Whatever happne to being the bigger person and ignoring what others say. We as Americans have all made dumb comments before so why should we judge when someone does something that we may have done prior. Let's not be hypocrites!

What Savage said made sense. People really need to toughen up now a days. Look around… there are goofy ass homosexuals running around rampant. Back in the day, they'd get their asses kicked if they tried that shit. Being autistic is a genetic disease, but like being gay (another genetic disease), it is way overdiagnosed and people use it as a crutch for their pathetic lives.

  90. 290

Austism has nothing to do with alcohol or smoking (not to say its ok) nor does it have to do with bad parenting. IF anything genetic and enviromental factors (such as the intake of mercury) is whats associated with the disease. MORONS. Do your research.

Of course he has the right of free speech, however his EMPLOYER has the right to protect their investment, and if his comments are offensive and will ruin their product, they have every right to fire him. If my behavior was damaging to my company, they would fire me, and I was made aware of the policies when I was hired…. I bet he was too. I personally think he is a narrow minded ASS who has no business trashing all families of children with autism. He might have an opinion to argue had he approached it in a different way, but most people don't take well to aggressive "My was is the only truth" type of speech. So more power to the stations that took him off the air. ASSHAT

First off, i am a mother of a 5 year old autistic child who is very well behaved and very well mannered. His problems is with communicating and his small motor skills. So far someone to say something like that about the children who do suffer with this, i find very offensive. Don't speak of something you know nothing about. My son tries his hardest everyday to be like other children and make friends and it is the hardest thing for a mother to watch knowing there are very few things you can do to help. The child can not help the way they are, they didnt ask to be born that way, they just were. So as far as im concerned that man can burn in hell!

Re: liber – I did listen to the entire broadcast…and the problem was that he was misinformed about a lot of things. It's very difficult to get a diagnosis of "autism" these days because the school districts will not hand out special services to just anyone. You have to have many evaluations, many tests, many interviews by teachers, doctors, family, etc. Perhaps in the past it was easy to get a diagnosis and milk the governement for special ed services…but not any more. It took me a year to get a diagnosis for my son. There also are no no medications for "Autism". There are for ADHD/ADD and other neurological disorders….but not for Autism. He should get his facts straight. As far as the issue of people raising "brats" these days…sure….we're a country of brat raisers these days. But Autism has nothing to do with it.

    1. His commecnts were not taken out of context. That's what he said, andhe said a lot more.
    2. There is no magic pill for Autism. So all of you who are saying kids are just being diagnosed to be put on meds are wrong. Many children on the autism spectrum have other disorders that require medication (like epilepsy, asthma) but there is no medication for Autism.
    3. My daughter has autism. She is 5. Doctors didn't WANT to diagnose her. It took months and months and lots of testing. It's not something you can just 'go to your doctor' for and be diagnosed on the spot.
    4. I did not smoke or drink.
    5. Smacking my daughter on the butt - or any autistic child for that matter, is not going to help - in fact, it will make it worse. Many autistic children, including my daughter, have sensory issues. The slightest sound and touch can feel like needles to their skin and screaming to their ears.
