As we mentioned earlier this week, homophobe and hate monger Michael Savage completely trashed all autistic children and their parents on his radio show recently.
Most memorably when he said "I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”
And now, finally, some radio stations are fighting back.
Making a step in the right direction is Mississippi.
Steve Davenport, head of the Super Talk network in Mississippi, called Savage's remarks "beyond inexcusable."
The network of seven stations has announced they will no longer carry Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, after his ridiculous remarks.
Davenport continues, “Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show have been cancelled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations,”
Savage has also lost a major advertiser for his program in AFLAC insurance.
A statement released by the company says, “AFLAC has a strong commitment to helping children through the AFLAC Cancer Center and AFLAC foundation. We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.”
Savage on the other hand is trying to validate what he said.
On his website, Savage writes, “My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as ‘autistic.’”
But if that were the case, why would he say that the problem with most autistic kids is that "They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says "We are asking him to be fired and we want to make advertisers aware of what he is broadcasting.”

I have a cousin who is Autistic. He can not speak and vents his anger by being a little violent, because no one understands what he is going through. Telling him to shape up and not act like a moron would do nothing. He understands about as much as a one year old and he is 15. Michael Savage should be taken off the air for spouting hate towards people that do not even understand what he is saying.
I do agree that too many people are being classified as Autistic, because doctors are not sure what is wrong with everyone. In 50 years there will be less Autistic people because researchers will have found classifications for other mental illnesses.
What Michael Savage should be saying is help find a cure, not putting more hate out there to people that are born with a handicap. Would you tell a paralyzed person to suck it up and walk!!!!

I work with children with autism, and I can say with 100% certainty that it is not a result of lack of parental guidance of discipline.
I have to question those individuals on this forum, and Mr. Savage himself, who say otherwise. Where does your opinion come from? Experience? Education? Or are you just one of those nasty individuals who form opinions based on absolutely nothing?
This man is completely wrong. While all people are entitled to an opinion, his opinions continue to be ones I'm not interested in hearing. It is up to his sponsors/company, but if it were me, I would pull sponsorship, just like AFLAC.

As a mother of a child with Autism, I find his comments ignorant. But I am not sure he should be fired. He is an idiot. But unfortunately that is not a crime. And if you do not like what he has to say then by all means do not tune in to his radio program. I would hope most people have enough sense to not take his comments as fact but just one mans ridiculous opinion. He is getting just what he wanted. Attention.

I think Savage should be fired from his job. Besides himself I am sure there are many people that listed to him that are being misinformed. I also think he should work in a school that are primary for children with autism and also have a real sitdown with parents of children with autism. There are many disagnosis that begin with autistm, ppd nos, etc. The bottom line is that with many of these children they are on the spectrum of autism. That is why the word exists. This man is a disgrace.

This is ridiculous. Savage is being treated the same way as Don Imus was when he said "nappy headed hoes" on his show. Savage didn't say anything racially offensive; instead he brought to light a very real issue and struck just as sensitive chord in people.
For those who have never listened to Savage and are jumping on the "he's a douche bag" bandwagon - Savage is not a Rush Limbaugh-type of man. Unfortunately Savage has taken the rest of the week off. I highly suggest listening to his broadcasts next week since he will be REPLAYING Monday's broadcast for the rest of the week.
The irony of it all is Savage lives in SF, one of the most liberal metropolises in the US!!! He converted from being a huge liberal to a conservative independent. HE IS NOT A REPUBLICAN.
I would love for anyone who thinks autism is a joke or fake to take care of some kids with autism and they will soon realize that it is a REAL SERIOUS medical issue. I hope it never happens to those who down play autism. Be alittle compassionate for those parents who children will never talk. never be independent, never have a significant other, never have friends, never know what "normal " is. Think about it, if it was your kid!!

He should be fired and banned. As the step mom of an autistic son, it is VERY hard living with an autistic child. Most people don't realize the constant hard work it takes to live with an autistic child. It is generally not public knowledge that these kids constantly have to be watched because they'll run away (they become fixated on something and can't control their impulse to run to it); they are often incontinent (even as old kids and teen they may have to wear pull ups and be changed) and their screaming fits are at times unbearable. Most people are clueless as to what our life is like and we certainly don't need ignorant, ill-intentioned public figures out there giving the public the impression that autism is simply a discipline problem. What an insult this many is to all the families faced with their terrible disease.

This disgusts me. I work with Autistic children and what he stated is not true. If he had a child with autism he would never think of making a statement like that. He would be out trying to find a cure and protecting the rights of his child.

I work with autistic kids, and there is NO WAY that it's an act, or a kid seeking attention, or whatever the hell he is talking about.
These people are extremely intelligent, yet have a hard time expressing themselves to others because of the way their brain functions.
It's not something they can help, obviously, if it's extreme cases, even though therapy and other mediums are used to improve.

I have a daughter who is autistic. I think he should absolutely have the right to say what he wants to say. However, if his sponsers continue to endorse him and what his radio show stands for- I won't support them. I think he should really meet some families with autistic children and see that if there was a Super Nanny fix all for this- anyone of us would take it. With all the families I have ever met dealing with this disorder, not ONE is lazy or indulgent with their kids. This is a real diagnosis and nobody needs him to boldly awaken anything.

As someone who works directly with profoundly autistic kids, I clearly think that this guy is a complete moron speaking out of his ass. However, he has every right to say what he said, by law.
I am not even against firing him; however, i think every single advertiser should pull their advertising from his show and the stations should drop him one by one, such as the stuff above. I don't agree with what he says at all, but I support his right to say it. But others who don't agree should protest by not listening and taking away their money.
Taking away all his money slowly will teach him a greater lesson than just firing him. Do you really think Imus learned about people not agree with his "nappy headed ho's" comment or just that he needs to be more PC. The lesson is stronger when the money/support goes before he gets fired.

I couldn't disagree more. This man has the #3 ranked radio show in the nation and unless you know this man and listen to his show you do not understand his point which was taken out of context. He is for the children, he even wrote a book in 1982 called Healing Children Naturally. His point is that this is a highly overdiagnosed problem. It is about money for doctors, schools, pharamceutical companies. He has had several highly respected doctors on his show backing him. Over half of "autistic" children are not really autisic. THAT IS HIS POINT.

Speaking as someone who actually heard the broadcast (yes, people, conservatives love Perez, too), he was talking about how autism is being overly diagnosed. For instance, if a child is underdeveloped verbally, they can be said to be autistic based on the current "autistic spectrum." He spoke with compassion about children who really are autistic, but feels that some doctors are assigning this disease to children who probably have other issues at play.
Unfortunately, activist groups who don't agree with Savage's politics hang on his every word waiting for him to say controversial things they can take out of context, so they can silence him. Don't buy into it. Freedom of speech is extremely important, especially now. It's important that people who advocate tolerance actually practice what they preach and tolerate others' opinions instead of trying to silence them. That's FASCISM, that's not freedom.
What Michael said was wrong and stupid. But he has a right to free speech. This is still America, right? And Perez Hilton of all people should be one of the first people to defend a person's free speech. Instead of saying that censorship is "a step in the right direction".
People need to stop letting schools diagnose their children. There is no set definition of autism, therefore doctors and pharamceuticals are taking advantage of this. There are many medical doctors out there who agree that at least 40%-50% of cases of autism that are misdiagnosed. Michael Savage was saying that 99% of that 40%-50% don't even have autism.
He is saying this because he feels that the children who really do have autism need the money and support. Not the 40%-50% that are misdiagnosed.
Why don't you report the whole story, or at least get your facts straight.

Re: Justi – If you knew anything about autism you'd realize that kids with autism are typically not prescribed medication and have serious issues.
I have 2 sons, 10 & 6. My youngest has PDD - Pervasive Developmental Disorder, this means he has many autistic traits but is able to speak and through two years of occupational therapy, speech therapy, working with teachers, and yes, medication, he has been able to learn skills to deal with situations which overwhelm him. I am on several autistic groups and they are calling for sponsors to withdraw their funds and some for his firing. I believe in the first amendment - it proves just how stupid some people are. It also allows people to stop paying to support this man who makes ridiculous comments on his radio show and in his books. I fought against getting this diagnosis for my child and fought against medication, but if you saw him on and off meds, you would see this condition is not fake.
Oh yeah, and my husband and I are married, I did not drink or smoke while pregnant, my oldest son does not have autism, and we do discipline our children. My youngest is different and we're working to make him be special and proud and function in the world.
Maybe overdiagnosis is also a problem with those who think Savage is actual worth listening too…they must be crazy.
I definitely do not think his show should be pulled off of the radio. If you listened to his whole show, you'd see that he wasn't being hateful or degrading of autistic children. Perez is always saying cruel things about celebrity kids, but I don't think his website should be pulled. Michael Savage has been around for years and he has a very large audience so I don't see him going anywhere. At least until the Democrats pass the Fairness Doctrine. That's when they'll take away our freedom of speech.

This country better get it together because more and more children are being diagnosed everyday. 1 in 150 children have some type of Autism, 1 in 94 boys.
Here in Oklahoma one of the representatives refused to hear parents' plea to have insurance cover Autism. Ignorance isn't the solution.
Re: bunny – okay first of all, you have no idea what you are talking about. as the sister of an autistic 12 year old i can tell you its not an act. its very real. and if she could change the way she behaves then she would because u can see the frustration in her face when she cant express something. oh and a little fyi my mom didnt nor did many of her friends smoke or drink during her pregnancy. and vaccines may be related to it considering the large amounts of mercury found in the triple vaccine given to most young children at their annual checkup.

Re: magen – Dear Magen, There is no medical diagnosis for Autism. There are no medical tests, no blood chemistry, no MRI changes, no verifiable neurological differences. It is a subjective diagnosis that has been spread too widely so that pediatricians can sell pharmaceutical products and increase their income. Im not saying that there is no such thing as Autism, just that not every kid who is being diagnosed is autistic. Same thing Michael Savage said if you would have actually listened to his program instead of hearing things second hand.
Hate speech is NOT protected speech. Promulgating the idea that autistic children are brats who can some how shape up and stop acting like idiots undermines the very movement to figure out why so many children have it. I work in Radio and its hard to express your opinion without some group coming after you trying to get you fired. I do however agree that this FOOL should be at least punished. On the one hand, the US Constitution guarantees freedom of speech. On the other hand, it doesn't require any radio station to provide a forum for idiots to spew their idiotic comments. If his employers want to fire him, I'm okay with it. If they want to keep him on, I'm okay with that too.

Please Perez, do not be a lazy "journalist" like the rest, Savage's statement was taken out of context. He did not malign autistic kids, he said some kids were been abused and unecessarily medicated by the drug mafia. The children that are naughty and being kids as they should are taken to doctors and placed in an autistic medication instead of being disciplined. I ve' heard of parents whom doctors told that their kids were autistic, but ignored the advise, some of this kids later became succesful in their choosen endeavor. You may want to know that his (Mr Savage) brother was physically challenged and died as a teenager. He has kids too.
