Savaged!

savage2.jpg

As we mentioned earlier this week, homophobe and hate monger Michael Savage completely trashed all autistic children and their parents on his radio show recently.

Most memorably when he said "I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

And now, finally, some radio stations are fighting back.

Making a step in the right direction is Mississippi.

Steve Davenport, head of the Super Talk network in Mississippi, called Savage's remarks "beyond inexcusable."

The network of seven stations has announced they will no longer carry Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, after his ridiculous remarks.

Davenport continues, “Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show have been cancelled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations,”

Savage has also lost a major advertiser for his program in AFLAC insurance.

A statement released by the company says, “AFLAC has a strong commitment to helping children through the AFLAC Cancer Center and AFLAC foundation. We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.”

Savage on the other hand is trying to validate what he said.

On his website, Savage writes, “My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as ‘autistic.’”

But if that were the case, why would he say that the problem with most autistic kids is that "They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”

John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says "We are asking him to be fired and we want to make advertisers aware of what he is broadcasting.”

What do U think should happen?

Michael is a good man who is frustrated with the world that we live in today. He should have never said what he did, as there are so many autistic children in the U.S. and we really do need to find out why that is. I do feel that Michael has so much knowledge to offer all of us and that we should all listen to what he has to say.

Would it be okay to say that a child born without legs is just looking for a ride? Absolutely not! While it is his right to spew his garbage, it his responsibility to be informed about the topics in which he speaks about. Children on the autism spectrum face so many challenges in life is do we really need to inflict ignorance on them? We are an intact family, on no state support,we pay out of pocket for his therapies. He is extremely smart he is doing advanced work 3 years ahead of his grade level. So I find his comments completely without merit and think that he is just a malicious person whose who gets joy out of life by bashing children and their parents who are struggling to find the answers. That man should be fired before he spreads anymore of his filth.

To all the fucking morons who thinks he is right… it is actually very hard to diagnosed as autistic. There are a series of tests and usually a few doctors are involved. The diagnosis will stick with the child for the rest of their life. So you're right, rather than disciplining their children, people would much rather pay thousands of dollars for tests and doctor's reports, then pay a great insurance premium only to be denied the extra coverage for the speech therapy, occupational therapy and other services that autistic children need. Get a brain you fucking idiots!!!!!!! You don't just go to a doctor, say my kid is a brat and get meds and be done with it. If any of you knew a fucking thing about the topic before commenting on it, you might see why his comments were so out of line. Sure, he has freedom of speech, but what he said was ignorant and totally unfounded with facts and/or research. AND SINCE WHEN ARE BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS THE ONLY FUCKING SYMPTOMs OF AUTISM!?!?! Stupid fuck.

This is the kind of thing people say about the mentally ill too. They think a person who hears voices can just snap themselves out of it, they CAN'T. So society's answer is to let all these poor souls end up homeless in the street. What a sick uncaring world we live in. Half of you are just plain EVIL.

What you people don't get about free speech… Lesson… You are free to say what you want, sure. Nobody is suggesting he be put in jail. However, this is a free country folks. People, including his employer can say 'hit the road jack." And they were "free" to do that. That isn't censorship, it is making a decision that being blatantly inflammatory doesn't have a place in their business model.

So to those crying about Savage being fired, learn the lesson and stop whining. This is a free country. Speak your mind. But know that if you act like an idiot, people can react, including your employer.

So, stop the whining and sniveling, the guys is a jerk, and now everyone knows it.

On the left we have whackos who think the minorities are owed all our money just because they are black. On the right we have uncaring evil people who think anyone who isn't rich should just fall in a whole and die. Is there no happy medium in this country? Can't we help people who DESERVE it in a responsible manner? Society has an obligation to care for the mentally ill, uninsured, retarded people and those with physical disabilities whose families don't care. If we don't then we are an evil society. That's not to say that people should just sit on their ass and wait for the gov't to bail them out of every situation but when the tradgedy of a disability/illness happens people need to assist. It's immoral not to.

Doesn't anyone think it's a bit scary at the number of posters on here with a child with Autism? If this is true, why isn't the country in a state of emergency? It appears that every child born nowadays has some disorder - why is everyone so accepting of this? WTF is going on with this country that there are so many cases? Scary! Re: cavyRe: cavy – There are LOTS of us parents out there with Autistic children and you would know if you've ever been to a CURE AUTISM walk. I have a son with Aspergers(high functioning Autism)and went to last years walk in Pasadena and none of us were getting together laughing that we fooled the system by having our children diagnosed. It takes a number of tests in order to be diagnosed and with early intervention your child has a fighting chance. There is an epedemic and we need to figure out what is going on. By the way, Autism has been around for a long time, parents weren't as vocal back then because they were told to put their children in institutions because they would never lead independent lives. We know that is not always true now.

Re: irish – I agree with you - there needs to be something seriously done about this epidemic. I'm sure you are a parent that I was talking about when I said, "for the TRUE cases, I wish you luck and happiness" and I truly hope you find a cure. It is so scary at the number of kids diagnosed. And although I'm sure Autism was around when we were kids, I doubt the numbers were as high as they are today - we didn't really have too many kids with disorders (kids were respectful and raised properly - again, I'm NOT talking about you or your child personally). I really believe the number of children with Autism is a lot lower than reported. I hope everyone with a true case is helped.

Why isn't the Government doing something about this? The numbers are way too high!

Re: simon – Hey smarty pants… please enlighten us to what drug companies are making with all these "mis-diagnosed" cases…. MANY children don't need or take drugs. Many children utilize thousands of dollars of therapies to help them. So you think that people say "hey I can't control my kid, give him a diagnosis" and then just pop pills so they don't have to deal with them? WRONG-O. Many doctors are involved… insurance rises, therapies aren't covered, hours and hours of therapies are required each week… so a parent chooses to go through all that instead of disciplining? What are the drug companies making off that?

    439

People don't want to hear this, but he has a point, but not to the extent he's pushing. Obviously, he's being extreme since that's his radio persona.
Read The Einstein Factor by Thomas Sowell
A lot of time, it's delayed language or delayed speech or delayed social skills and people immediately call it autism to get extra funding.
In this time of "no child left behind," if kids don't meet some arbitrary crappy standard, they have to find some reason for it.
We need to be more open to kids getting left back a year in order to mature, and we need to focus on social skills rather than just on reading, writing, and test taking.

And yes, I have a delayed language child, and had to fight tooth and nail in order to prevent that child from being labeled "autistic." One year after the diagnosis and after a year of early intervention for delayed language, the teacher admitted to me that sometimes, autism can be a habit, and if you catch it early enough, it doesn't become a permanent condition.

So back off people who are knee jerk reacting.

And as a few have rightly said, there is still something left of the constitution. He can say whatever he wants. Except he can't yell fire in a crowded movie house.

Re: bunny – You are so full of shit. No one in the mainstreem autistim comunity is even barking up the vaccine tree, never has been. There is no evidence that vaccines cause autism, and the most promising research is looking at genetic causes being influenced by enviornment (including viruses and bacterial infections) NOT vaccines.

Some of us actually read that stuff before we form opinions about why our children have been stricken with autism. You should be reading a great deal more than you do, if you are going to be putting your ignorance out there for everyone to see.

I would never have a child in this day and age. With the disorders, the helicopter parenting, the "Mommy Wars" and just the plain anger I read from parents posting here. Not to put the good parents down, but, for the most part, parenthood sounds miserable! Are there even any happy and healthy children being born these days? Parenthood doesn't sound even remotely appealing anymore. I feel very sorry for modern parents - stay strong.

I cannot believe that people are encouraging this man to be fired. The United States is a place where free speech, no matter if you agree with it or not, is still allowed. Also, why doesn't Perez post the entire quote or better yet, an audio clip of that particular segment so that we are able judge Michael Savage's comments (in their entirety) for ourselves? Savage's main point is that autism, ADD and ADHD are often over diagnosed and that he believes that big pharmaceutical companies are peddling drugs to children who don't really need them. I have worked with kids with disabilities and I know firsthand that many kids do indeed struggle with autism, however I do think that Savage's main point is a good one.

You can fire someone for saying something racist, sexist, etc. But you cant fire someone for a stupid comment.

  72. J says – reply to this

    472

For starters, is freedom of speech no longer included in the Constitution of the United States of America? Yeah, thought it was still in there. Censorship is illegal, morons.

Second, Michael Savage had a younger brother that was born with severe mental disabilities… he had to live through his family sending his brother off to a mental institution to die a horrible death at a very young age. He's spoken very candidly about this fact and if you actually LISTENED to his radio show and were able to take his comments from the context in which they were spoken, you would know this.

You would also know that he is an ADVOCATE for further autism research and made these comments in an attempt to call people to action, instead of suffering from "white coat syndrome" - taking everything a doctor says as the gospel.

You would also be aware of the fact that he recommends the book "Healing Children Naturally" to parents raising children who may behave outside of the "norm" or who have "behavorial issues".

  73. J says – reply to this

    473

So, in a word, NO, I DO NOT believe Michael Savage should be taken off the air for telling parents to WAKE UP and TAKE ACTION against the pharmeceutical companies, doctors and school systems who are trying to DRUG OUR CHILDREN INTO SUBMISSION. Give me a break. Half the meds for autism haven't been tested for any length of time to determine the long-term effects of the meds - nor has any MEDICAL standard for diagnosing autism been discovered or put into practice. Which is why we need research - which is why Michael Savage should be PRAISED - not PUNISHED - for his extreme attempt at raising awareness.

Get real, folks, and don't let the LIBERAL MEDIA control your mind.

Based on a few of the responses here, it's clear that just as some people absurdly confuse autistic children with bad children without guidance, some people confuse the freedom of speech with freedom from the consequences of free speech.

To Tracy and any others who are bringing up that we live in a country of free speech…Well yes we do. As such, Savage has a right to say complete crap without government intervention. By the same token, however, the people who don't like what he said have the right to say so and call for his dismissal, etc. Personally - exercising my own free speech on the matter - I applaud the Mississippi stations and AFLAC for doing not only the PC thing, but the plain old right thing.

Shame on you for speaking out against Savage making a comment about autistic children (which was taken compeletely out of context - if you'd listen to his show, you'd know this) only to turn around with a racial slur.

  78. Scorn says – reply to this

    478

    NOTHING!
This should spark a national conversation like the N-word did on the View

I drugged my child when he acted up in elementary school when I started to work as well. It was easier to drug him than to learn to fix how our family related to each other or learn to live on one income, or so I thought. Our son gained weight on meds, he was sluggish, couldn't concentrate and became angry over the fact that he also was switched to the short bus and carted off to the behavorial school. He became unsocial and often walked out of class in anger. It was difficult to get an education but he had a zest for knowledge, even on meds. He learned to teach himself, Thank God. But I cry everyday over my mistakes and realize it was a fiedish thing to do, to drug my child instead of learning behavior mod early on and being consistent with consequences.

Our son learned to distrust everyone and learned to dislike himself. He walked with slumped shoulders and never went out without a hoodie over his head. We've had to deal with drugs, alcohol, lying, stealing and suicide attempts. We taught him that he was the problem, not us. He felt unworthy and couldn't trust anyone because the people that he was supposed to trust the most let him down. It was a sin to do that to him. Please don't let the school or your pediatrician tell you that you need to drug your child.

Re: sally – So Sally, which of his nasty main points are you talking about? The point where he says that children with autism need a father around to slap them around and stop being a moron, the point that says us parents are getting paid after our children are diagnosed , the point that most of(99%) of diagnosis are made by quacks that miss diagnose, or the part where it is the parents fault for their child turning out the way they did? I too, worked (teacher's assistant in Los Angeles for 4 years) with young children diagnosed with autism and other forms of disabilities then came home to my own child with Autism. I don't need to stand behind some jack ass because he has the right to freedom of speech and doesn't know what to do with it when he has it. If you knew any better you wouldn't either.

Aww. Thanks. Good luck to you too. And yes don't have children. It's not worth it. Ha ha. Just kidding. Anyway having an autistic kid for me is a blessing and a curse. It costs sick $$, time, love. You die the previous life you were leading. Refocus. Government help? Bitch, please. Take into account the brain damaged condition you're dealing with. There is so much work to be done. The good thing is that it can be done. And lazy parents, I know it doesn't look good for me posting here does it?
So to me it appears the vaccines should have an investigation or whatever.
Long live Micheal Savage and people like Jesse Jackson! I will try to listen to him in the near future.

I have a son who has AUTISM. Autism is a social disorder and people with it have a hard time socializing and feeling comfortable in situations that feel totally expectable to a person without the disorder. I fell it was an ignorant statement made by Michael Savage,” 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.” More research has been done and we are learning more about the disorder and that is why children are being diagnosed and correctly treated. I hope that everyone who believes Michael Savages comment will never has a child with autism.

Sorry if this ends up being a double post, but I don't think my first one went through…

The concepts of freedom of speech and censorship are far less encompassing than some of you seem to believe. Freedom of speech allows you to say what you want; it doesn't protect you from the consequences of what you said, including other folks exercising their own freedom of speech by calling for you to be fired. And Savage wasn't censored before and isn't being censored now; censorship amounts to the suppression of information. How has Savage been censored? He said exactly what he wanted before - which is what got him into all this controversy - and is free to continue saying exactly what he wants now, even if he is fired, via interviews, blogs, etc.. Whether or not he has a radio platform to present his views from, though, is an entirely different matter that involves business decisions and capitalism, not freedom of speech. So, as someone else already said, if his bosses decide to keep him, fine and if not, fine too.

I will add that as a teacher who works with both autistic and non-autistic children, I've yet to encounter even a single autistic child who seemed to be misdiagnosed. I accordingly strongly suspect that most folks here agreeing even partially with Savage have not had the opportunity to meet many if any diagnosed autistic children and thus truly don't know what they are talking about.

We should dialogue about it. Do you relaize he has written a book on how to heal children naturally and he grew up with an extremely disabled brother? Didn't think so. He may be rude, crude and sociable unexceptable sometimes but he has a intellect to be reckoned with. He is also taking on CAIR in the courts. It's interesting that the alphabet stations don' mention this, but they all came to the aid of Don Imus. Networks and stations won't mention him unless it is in a very unflattering light like this. I notice they are having a field day with this. Most of them have a miniscule scope of knowlege compared to Savage. And most people won't go on his show because he owes allegiance to no one and no polotical party, therefore he can ask anything of them that he wants. Pretty scary concept for most "talking points" robots.
We need to stop drugging our children and most of all stop drugging our boy children. Something is wrong in our nation, but who are the real savages? Is it Michael or The drug companies, pediatricians, teachers and/or parents? Let's DISCUSS!

Michael Savage has done more for the military, national security, children, the family unit, science, social science and religion than more people I know of. His daily dialog/monolog is controvesial at times, but he never ceases to amaze me and spark me with his knowledge of history in general, languages, peoples of the world and many, many more issues and interests. If he is taken off the air we are truly becoming a communist nation. To all those opposing Michael having free speech, get on a plane with Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, Hillary, Barbra Boxer and the rest of their ilk and kindly set up shop in China, Russia or Cuba. That's All.

If people have a problem with Michael Savage, all they have to do is NOT LISTEN TO HIS BROADCAST.

To many people, your support for GAY lifestyles is EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE. But does that mean PEREZ HILTON ought to be taken off the internet?!?!?! NO of course not.

Everyone is entitled to have an opinion, and viewers/listeners should be entitled to listen to who they want to hear, no matter how ignorant or misinformed their views may be.

It is up to us, as a collective audience to decide whether we want to turn him on or off.

Everyone wants to fire this man when all he did was to use his freedom of speech, albeit in a childish form of expression, but due to the anger of drug lobbyists having such control over our nation that we are now drugging our children on a regular basis. My 3.5 year old is on the autism spectrum and let me tell you - one thing i do NOT need is to be on the internet and read crappy statements like Savage's. It's so uneducated and sooo wrong. Having a special-needs child is an unbelievable JOB. You are constantly fighting to make sure your child gets the help he/she needs in order to have a chance at life. I urge people to not listen to Savage, advertisers to pull their money and stations to drop him. Why would anyone WANT to listen to someone who clearly has no idea what they are talking about??? Yes, doctors are now diagnosing more kids w/ autism but that is b/c we are finally starting to realize that different issues are connected and fall under the same category. AND that they respond to the same forms of treatment - intense early intervention.

  97. 497

Looks like a lot of people here who are bashing Doctor Michael Savage have a little autism their self. Fuckin'-A douchebags, when he said "99%" this was clearly hyperbole. He uses hyperbole daily. Savage acknowledges autism exists and cares more about kids than other group in society. His point was that children are being misdiagnosed by people without proper credentials (i.e. teachers, administrators, school psychologists, pharm. firms, etc). Moreover, there is a profit motive for those doing the misdiagnosis in many cases.
