Savaged!

savage2.jpg

As we mentioned earlier this week, homophobe and hate monger Michael Savage completely trashed all autistic children and their parents on his radio show recently.

Most memorably when he said "I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

And now, finally, some radio stations are fighting back.

Making a step in the right direction is Mississippi.

Steve Davenport, head of the Super Talk network in Mississippi, called Savage's remarks "beyond inexcusable."

The network of seven stations has announced they will no longer carry Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, after his ridiculous remarks.

Davenport continues, “Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show have been cancelled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations,”

Savage has also lost a major advertiser for his program in AFLAC insurance.

A statement released by the company says, “AFLAC has a strong commitment to helping children through the AFLAC Cancer Center and AFLAC foundation. We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.”

Savage on the other hand is trying to validate what he said.

On his website, Savage writes, “My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as ‘autistic.’”

But if that were the case, why would he say that the problem with most autistic kids is that "They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”

John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says "We are asking him to be fired and we want to make advertisers aware of what he is broadcasting.”

What do U think should happen?

He should not lose his job…people should just boycott his loser show.

Isn't he entitled to his opinion?

No one has to turn on their radio's to listen to him.

If no one listen he has no radio job.

Savage obviously does not have his facts straight. The vast majority of autistic kids come from white families with both parents in the home who were older than 35 when they had the child, and have incomes greater than the average. Go figure. Also, weren't WAY too many kids labeled ADD/ADHD just a decade ago? Whatever happened to that diagnosis? Not so populare any more. Or is it more likely that teachers aren't so quick to label every rambunctious boy?

I heard Dr. Savage on his show tonight
explain his comment and it made perfect sense.

    Media Matters took
his comments and ran with them the way Media Matters
always does with conservatives, never liberals,
    to make Dr. Savage
look as mean and looney as possible.
    .

Dr. Savage has written 25 books, one of them
    "Healing Children naturally Without Drugs".
    .

He uses strong language at times to make the point
that children are being given powerful drugs at an early age
to make more money for "BIG PHARM".
    .

Dr. Savage has had four best sellers in a row on the
NEW YORK TIMES best sellers list, yet the mainstream
media, including FOX, pretends he does not exist.
    .

Most people who brand Dr. Savage a HATER have never
listened to his show, they take the word of Media Matters
and Left Wing smear groups and condemn him without
    hearing the full story.
He is NOT a homophobe either.
    .
The left Wing would like nothing better than to shut up
TALK RADIO forever, using the so called
    "Fairness Doctrine" Nancy Pelosi loves.
    .

If people do not like Dr. Savage, don't listen to his show.
The Left Wing has its own radio network, it
    is called National Public Radio.
I dare The Left to challenge Dr. Savage to a free open
debate on television live, on any subject.

I get what he was trying to say behind the other idiotic comments. He went about it the wrong way when he had to keep going on about autistic kids being brats and needing a father.
THOSE comments were asinine. However, he should have been pointing his finger at the friggin ADD/ADHD diagnosis too that seems to be pervading this country as well. I absolutely believe there are too many kids in this country being misdiagnosed and needlessly medicated. There also seems to be this grand misconception that children should be sitting still and being quiet at all times like little mini-adults. Children are no longer allowed to be and act like children in this country and when they do they get labeled as having something wrong with them. Who's really benefiting from that? Doctors, therapists, and drug makers?!?

He can say what he wants and unfortunately, ignorant people may believe him. However, come on..he's an idiot. here's hoping his grandchild or someone he knows personally has autism. It's neurological. What a tard he is. He needs to volunteer in a classroom for autistic kids. And I bet he's such a moron he really meant ADHD.

  7. Laten says – reply to this

    507

Yes, Savage is entitled to his moronic opinions. It seems to me Tom Cruise went on an ignorant tirade about mental illness a while back and lost work over it. When you are in the public eye and do something evil you have to be prepared for the conseqences. No, I'll never listen to him again and I'll make sure his syndicates know it. I'll also not purchase any products advertised on his show and I'll let his advertisers know that too. Freedom of speech goes both ways. I hope people like him are sterile. We don't need more mini-savages in this world that teach ignorance, hate and intolerence.

    508

Finally some justice. Way to go AFLAC insurance! Send the message loud and clear that people like Michael Savage can not abuse their power. Sure they can have the freedom of speech but take their ass off the radio, let them stand on a street corner and rant if they want to but don't pay them to make dumb ass statements. Can his ass! Next idiot to fire would be Oklahoma's politician Sally Kern.

I work with autistic children and autism is based on a spectrum. So for those of you agreeing with him you need to sit back and read the facts, children at the lower end of the spectrum may generally have just learning and communication difficulties not necessarily behaviour problems and children at the higher end may have all of the difficulties above with behavioural problems. So to say that autistic children need to be straightened out by strict parents and a father figure are purely ignorant. NO TWO AUTISTIC CHILDREN ARE THE SAME!!!!!!!!!

He is using the public airwaves that reach millions and he has a responsibilty to the public and the public has a right to question his comments. If you yell "fire" in crowded room you go to jail. It's against the law. Free speech has limits. Hate speech and free speech are two seperate issues. Michael Savage (weiner) in my opinion is a self-hating closted homosexual. Someone who is so angry and outspoken against something is usually doing it. Just like on MSNB he got fired for telling a caller "i hope you get aids and die".

What really should happen is he should donate half of his salary to autism research, then next time he will think twice about saying something so ignorant! Something good could come out of this! Its pretty obvious that he has no medical knowledge at all of autism

  16. Mel says – reply to this

    516

And let me educate all of you people who DO NOT have a child on the spectrum. It is a real diagnosis, it is a valid condition. It is important for these children to receive a diagnosis because otherwise the school systems will not provide them with the therapy (occupational, physical, pyschological, etc) that they need. Also, without a diagnosis stating that a child needs help, insurance companies will not reimburse or cover any extra, private therapies that a child could benefit from. So the diagnosis is very, very important. I guess that douchebag can say whatever he wants but it bothers me to the core that he is talking about my son. I would LOVE for my son not to have a diagnosis, trust me….I've done nothing but suffer since he received it. But if you met him, you would see he has a real condition and it is not made up. I don't know why there is an increase in diagnosis…nobody knows why…but don't blame it on the people giving out the diagnosis….nobody is trying to "get away" with anything here. It's just a sad fact and sometimes when people feel bad for others they try to come up with solutions and I guess his was to say that doctors are being too liberal with the diagnosis. I would love it if that were true, but it certainly isn't.

I don't think he should be fired for expressing his RIGHT to freedom of speech. I also think Doctor's are too quick to label a child as autistic when it could be something that can be changed in the child's diet. I'm not a Doctor and I don't claim to know all about autism but I do know that alot of this can be avoided by taking out sugar and/or wheat products first before using medications. I'm not a big fan of his but, like everyone else, he is entitled to his opinion.

If you were to walk into my child's special education school, you would realize that these children are NOT misdiagnosed. When a person like Mike Savage goes on the air and says inflamitory, incorrect statements such as these, to such a large audience, it sets Autism research back tremendously…and it perpetuates myths that we, the Autism community have fought so hard to clarify. So yes….we all should be freakd out that there are so many children that are diagnosed with this very real disorder….and as you can see….there are so many hateful misinformed people out there who are pointing fingers at our children….thinking "retard" "quit the act" "moron" "needs real dicipline" ,etc…

    .
I wanted this fucker fired after his comments about Heath Ledger.
    .
THIS IS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO HIM:
He should be made to do a year of community service working with severely affected Autistic kids. Let him see what I saw as a teachers assistant doing just that.
    .
And when he's done, I want every parent of every autistic kid to get the opportunity to publicly ridicule him, to shame him as a man and a human being.

I think that if people really, really listen to what he said and read what he said, it was not meant to be mean spirited about the children, it was more towards the diagnosis of the illness.

When I heard what he said I agreed with him 100%. The media is blowing it way out of content.

I know a child who is not autistic but his DR. labeled him as "slightly" such and it just isn't right…..

I can only hope that the people who are upset will take a step back and read/listen to his "entire" comment, not just what the media is saying..

    Go Mike!! ….some American's don't like the truth…."the truth HURTS"…..

I am a parent of a late talker that was almost labeled Autistic and he is simply a normal little boy in every way except that he is late talking…..Parents need to learn to trust their gut and stand behind what they feel is right even if it means going against the "professional" that is doing the diagnosis.

Michael Savage was not attacking children with autism, nor even was his attack aimed at those that have been misdiagnosed. His attack was aimed at doctors and pharmaceutical companies that are trying to get every child in America on some sort of expensive medication. You can't say that every kid that has been diagnosed with autism is actually autistic, can you? And autism diagnosis has gone up 800%. Doesn't that sound just a little bit suspicious? My father didn't start talking until he was 4 or 5. In this day, from that criteria alone he would have been diagnosed as autistic, when in reality, he is extremely smart and well adjusted.
Savage may have been wrong for calling most of those kids "brats" and he should have known better, but he's inflammatory. What can I say, sometimes he insults his own listeners and I have to turn him off because he makes me mad. BUT at least I have the choice to turn the station, instead of him being forcibly removed for expressing a sentiment that is indeed commonly held by others.

  58. 558

Freedom of speech is totally gone out the window……….. there are simply toooooooooooooooo many liberal people that get their feeling hurt over anything, not saying that Autism is something to weigh very lightly, but it is ok for people to talk about other people, but the minute it is brought about their children or children in general, people go off the deep end. Kids today get everything they want, parents don't control their children and all they want to do is play video games or be on a computer all the time. It is time to go bakc to the old days, and get your kid out side to play, interact with other children.

I am very impressed that someone has finally spoke up and shown their true feelings about this issue. I totally agree with Savage. Yeah, it sounds very insensative at first, but if you haven't actually known someone that is abusing the system then you wouldn't understand anyway. There are thousand upon thousand of people who are just too lazy (or stupid) to face the fact that they don't know how to raise their children. There was recently a book I found called from Chaos to Calm, Beyond Time Out written by Beth A. Grosshans, Ph.D. with Janet Burton, L.C.S.W. which I think truly relates to this subject. Parents are too afraid to take charge and discipline their children. I am not saying that you have to grab a paddle and beat their ass every day, but do you really think that a little smack on the hind end is going to scar them for life, emotionally? Rrrrriigghhhttt….. Parents need to step up and not be so freaking scared that they are going to hurt their kids feelings, and take charge!!!!! But no, instead since their child is a spoiled, wimp who gets their way every time they want to go out a certain door or have their PB&J cut a certain way or use a certain fork or only eat certain foods, they are labeled Autistic. And you and I, working citizens, pay for their FREE MEDICAL service from Medicaid every day with our working tax dollars.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." (Evelyn Beatrice Hall)

HUGE difference between kids acting like brats and a child suffering from Austism or a kid who has ADHD.
Savage has the right to voice his opinion since this is a free country and he has the right to do so because of the free speech laws we have in this country and all but to label kids suffering with either Autism or ADHD as brats is wrong.

I believe that what he said was hate speech. If it had been a debate in which the other side had a chance to make some form of rebuttal, then I could be more flexible in my view. But no, his statement was simply one of ignorant hate. I'd even venture to say that it was worse than Don Imus' comment last year, because Savage went on and on until his little ego exploded all over itself in ecstasy. It's like Tom Cruise and his comments on post-partum depression. Idiotic, ill-informed, and worthy of immediate and harsh discipline.

This demon and the ignorant inbred people that support him should all be shot. My son is autistic, he is NOT a retard, he is NOT a brat, he is better behaved and more intelligent than most of the "normal" kids in his class (and their parents).

Autism is not a pyschological problem - like most of the bipolar schizo's that listen to this asshole on the radio. It is a NEUROLOGICAL problem. The children's brains are unable to process verbal information. That's why they scream sometimes, because they are frustrated (like a 2 year old that can't talk), because they are unable to get across what they need or what hurts. Many of our kids are sensitive to touch and sounds, because of the NEUROLOGICAL problems.

I'd rather my son be autistic, than be a mental case, like the majority of drug taking adults that support this jerk on radio.

It's funny that the assholes that choose to attack Autistic kids know that the kids can't fight back. But FUCK THEM! The parents will! Yes, my son has both his mother and BIRTH FATHER in his life. He's happy and has a great life.

Have a great life taking your Meth fuckers… we'll see who wins in the end.

I have to listen to the bullcrap that falls out of that nasty Obooma's mouth…and I'm not protesting to have him fired as senator. People in this country are small, petty, immature children. Heaven forbid they have to hear anything they disagree with. Someone needs to play taps over the USA.

I happen to be a developmental therapist and work with children with autism and while it's true they have many behavioral problems these problems in no way stem from a lack of discipline. Any educated person who's spent any amount of time with a child with autism knows that their brains do not function the same way as ours do, they do not perceive the world in the same way as you or I do. Before you go ahead and put out your opinion of a disorder or those with it why don't you maybe read a book on the subject instead of saying just what you might have in your pathetic little brain at the second.

NEVER SPEAKING A WORD! SAVAGE ALSO SAID THAT HE, HIMSELF, BELIEVES HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED AS A CHILD FOR OCD OR SOMETHING BECAUSE HE HAD STRANGE BEHAVIOR. I THINK IT IS GREAT TO STIR UP CONTROVERSY FOR DISCUSSION BUT YOU PEOPLE ARE SO ANGRY ABOUT A COMMENT WHEN YOU HAVE NO BACKGROUND INFO YOURSELVES. BESIDES, PEREZ SHOULD HAVE HIS SPONSORS PULLED FOR CONTINUOUSLY CALLING A 15 YEAR OLD GIRL A SLUT! SHE IS 15!!!! I THINK THAT IS WORSE AND THERE IS NO READING BETWEEN THE LINES THERE!!!

I work in this field and there are specific guidelines that need to be followed in order to diagnose. You don't meet the criteria = you don't get the diagnosis.

Well, I guess that I can tell my son's school that they are ridiculous, his therapists that they ought to find a new career, and neurologist that he needs to go back to school because there is no such thing. I guess everyone owes me a refund for his services because it is all fake. How can you be so insensitive? You are so sadly missinformed! And, by the way, we do spank! If spanking was going to help, my children would be just fine and dandy! I spank because my parents did, but it does nothing for my kids; but it makes me feel like I am doing the right thing, so I keep on doing it…because of pieces of shit like you, just so that I can say, I do everything you do to dicipline, and it does not work when your kids have autism. Karma is a bitch, if you have not had your children yet, I hope you find out first hand how insensitive and stupid you are…and your poor grand children, you could be brining such misery on them by inviting this "curse" into your family by being so judgemental. He has a right to say what he THINKS a (freedom of speech right!) But before he speaks he needs to find support on his opinion. Someone who supposedly has two PhDs and practices journalism should practice this minor detail! (Perez does!)

And to the dumbasses who agree with him are just dumbfucks who believe everything they hear and read through the media's eye. My little brother has a severe case of autism and i know for a fact that my mom did not smoke or drink during her pregnancy, and my dad raised him well. A severe case of autism lacks the ability of communication and telling them to "stop being a moron" just doesnt click in their head. aside from that, ADHD(ADD) is NOT the same thing as AUTISM! they sometimes have a codependence, but they are two totally different diseases. Just because he has two PhDs doesn't mean he knows what he is talking about in that certain field, but yeah he's entitled to his OPINION. and I guess so is the rest of the world who thinks the disease is "fake".

Yeah he's right when he says that "every child who acts a little different gets medicated" but when there are genes and proven biological disfunctionalities in the processes of the brain then there really is something going on.

Before you make an opinion think about who you may be offending! whether it's bashing about the lgbt community or children with learning disabilities. it's all the same thing.

Savage should be left alone and within 6 months his show would be off the air because people would stop listening to him. Most of us with autistic kids spend most of our money and almost all of our time helping our children to overcome these behaviors! That is one person who has not taken on the repsonsibilty for their child, the rest of us have children with problems (which bankrupt us, btw) but you would never know because WE DO what we are supposed to to make your pretty little life nice, we keep them out of the public eye until they get it under control. Re: Hater – Geez Hater, have you ever seen a kid with autism that was in a stupor? You know, a "stupor" implies that they are tranquelized! That is not true! We use pharmacitcals for our autistic child for various problems, a tremor in her hands, for instance, is controled with a beta blocker. Should I not use this becuase you think that the drug companies might make money? I should just let her shake? She has autism for christ sake, would you like her to shake so bad that she cannot hold a pencil. Or how about anxiety? The child cannot shower because she is afraind of lightining hitting the house. She gets out 20 or 30 times to dry off, and go check for rain. Nothing will fix that, but guess what? A little pill allows her to forget about her irational fear and actually bathe…but we could withhold this, to make ass wipes like you happy, and you could lambaste us for letting her smell so bad…What do you want from us? If you can treat the symptons they have with drugs and they work, what problem is that for you? Or would you just rather that the parents of these kids just watch this go on and NOT do anything to help? What an idiot you are.

If you will re-read my post, you will see that I made generalizations about no one. I gave one very specific example of inappropriate school mainstreaming. Unlike your response, my post was free of judgement and name-calling. I will continue to speak out against my child being exposed to sexually inappropriate behavior by autistic children who don't belong in that classroom–end of story.

So much for your self-righteousness. It really makes you look ignorant.

I teach children with autism and can tell you from experience that this is a very real condition. Sure, as with many other diagnoses of illnesses, sometimes it is misdiagnosed, or children are have varient illnesses on the autism scale, such as Asburger's (sp?) Syndrome. But this is insulting to doctors, teachers, and most definitely to parents I see everyday fighting to give their children a better chance. My autistic students work so hard, as do teachers of students with special needs; though he's entitled to his opinion, this is just an insult. I've never commented on anything before, but this broke my heart, and unfortunately misleads those with no firsthand knowledge of autism.

You are fucking moron. Do you have kids? Are you of the medical profession? There are many reasons a child can have autism. It is not necessarily because a child's mother was smoking or abusing drugs. Why do you do some freaking research before opening your pie hole. There is not just one cause. Genetics as well as environmental factors can cause it.

I have worked with special needs children and have seen some severe cases of autism and some less severe.
