I was made aware that kids in the US do not wear school uniform by an American University student I supervised in my country on an exchange programme. She thought it was positive to wear a uniform because it removed the competition between girls, in particular, about the way they dressed and their "coolness". There's enough pressure on girls to conform to a certain body image and way of looking without it infiltrating into the classroom. And from a parent's point of view, school uniforms are much cheaper than providing the endless range of outfits a teenage girl would feel necessary to "keep up". Some say wearing a uniform denies kids the right to express themselves as individuals, but if you look at the clothes they choose to wear, aren't they just all submitting to another kind of uniform dictated by corporations, namely fashion? What's wrong with expressing your individuality through your personality, intelligence, interests and achievements?
