'Green' Fad Not $elling

algore.jpg

Looks like Hollywood and the media might have effed things up a bit, just as 'serious' environmentalists had feared they would according to a new report.

When 'going green' became the cause of the moment, the true greenies worried that 'green' was in danger of becoming a fad. As a fad, important environmental messages would be classified as, gasp, pop culture.

There are signs that the environmentalists were on to something.

The New York Times reports that the advertising industry is pulling back from green-themed marketing, having "grasped the public's growing skepticism over ads with environmental messages".

Additionally, 'green' themed magazine issues are not selling well at the newsstands.

For example, Time's Earth Day issue was the newsweekly's third-lowest-selling issue of 2008 so far at 72,000 copies sold. A typical issue of Time sells about 93,000 copies.

The 'fad' must have done some good, though?

Are y'all at least a little more Earth friendly?

can't believe how incredibly narrow minded these stupid americans who posted here are… it's all about them… this whole thing is a fraud because the democrats want to make money??? can't you see the bigger picture and see that the world you're polluting doesn't just belong to you but that you share it? first the industrialized nations polluted and caused all these damage and now you're claiming it's a hoax to make money for al gore??? but what do people expect… stupid americans are stupid americans… no wonder the rest of the world hates them.

Jessi: You need to rent a movie called "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?". Oh yes, Leonardo DiCaprio can indeed act. He also was excellent in "The Aviator" and so many more.
You are entitled to your opinion but I think you need to have a second look.

You're right Jessi - I remember a few years back someone did a story on all of these political celebrities and most of them never stepped foot in a college and some of them didn't even graduate high school! I pay Brad Pitt to look hot and read drivel from a script, I don't pay him to tell me how to vote and how to spend my money. If I want to know about politics, I'll turn on CNN or read a friggin' newspaper. The Brads and Leos of LaLa Land need to shut up and entertain. I just read that Pamela Anderson is now endorsing Obama. I would like to know if Pammy can even spell Obama.

I am always skeptical of 'green' advertising, you have all these companies trying to make a buck off these things and thus it dilutes the real issue.
    .
However, for those that have woken up to this issue, this issue is certainly not a fad. And lets hope that there are more people out there that are awake on this issue than Not.

I definitely have started to do my part…at least a little. No more water bottles (my nalgene bottle is with me all the time), and have super cute re-usable shopping bags. I also try to walk and ride my bike when possible. I think that some of it is a fad…but I do see people trying.

  9. free says – reply to this

    109

The fact that some companies stop advertising their 'green' products because maybe they're not as green as they say they are and the public is aware of this, is not bad per se and it doesn't make the environmental message lest urgent -or 'trendy', if you want. If Time (and other magazines) want to sell issues with a green message, I'd advise them to make it even more pop culture- if you can't beat them, join them!

I have to say that I got tired of reading all the "green-themed" magazines (and it rhymes!) Most of the suggestions were completely ridiculous and not very practical. I loved the biodegradable trash bags - I would totally buy them if I could afford $20 for TEN bags! It seems best to just be sensible - recycle everything you can, consume less, plant your own garden if possible, walk/bike when you can rather than drive. No one likes being preached to … especially when you are telling them to spend a butt-load of money "for the environment". (Carbon off-sets - are you freaking kidding me???)

I'd ask Toyota whether green has been good or not. I own a Prius, it has never broken down, I get excellent service and fill up the tank for under thirty bucks. I used to own a Chrysler, which started breaking down a week after I bought it. There is a waiting list for Prius but I haven't heard anything about lay-offs at Toyota. They are building a new American plant and making jobs. And a hybrid doesn't cost more, it saves more. I love putting $5.00 worth of gas in my car when the guy at the next pump is filling up his Suburban. I don't thing he's thinking "boy she paid almost as much for that Prius as say a six cylinder Accord." Numbskulls who think we can avoid this issue are busy signing pink slips at GM and the next one may be their own. They didn't think it was a good idea to stop building 12 mpg cars. Hey, I hear you can pick up a used one for a song!

    135

Doing small bits to go green doesn't cost as much as many people think. I use the canvas bags, and I stopped driving everywhere. I would rather walk anyway, you get exercise and you leave less pollution. I do live in a big city and it's not that horrible. I think people are just lazier than they used to be. Going green is like trying to lose 10 lbs. It takes effort on your part. Not everything is going to be handed to us this greedy, lazy, and selfish nation. Other small countries have been able to go green, why not some of the richest nations? Greed is the main portion. I guess it's easier when you live a state where there are many local farmers and the cities make an effort to help stop pollution.

I guess people get tired of being preached at by moneyed up ex-politicians, businessmen and "celebs" about living more simply, while these hypocrites continue to live their excessive lifestyles, at the same time putting on a show of "buying and living green". The fact that "green-themed" magazines have sold less, and advertising exploiting the green message has been shown to be losing its effectiveness, does not necessarily measure or reflect the BEHAVIOUR of people in relation to using less energy, recycling, etc. All it shows is the public is not taken in by corporations exploiting the "green message" to increase consumption in their direction and so increase their profits. It is at the community level where real action occurs, for example, local councils providing residents with the means of recycling through a collection service similar to that for rubbish. It is much more motivating to feel that you are making a difference in the community where you live through simple, everyday actions, than to be told what to think and do by people and organizations just using the "green message" as a means of lining their own pockets, and in doing so, increasing consumption.

By the way, the idiots who make comments about this being a hollywood movie are obviously still trapped with their brother "Boo Radley" inside their mothers basement (that was a reference to a book "To Kill A Mockingbird" for those of you who only read this shit). The argument for global warming does not focus on whether or not it exists, wake up, it does! It's to what extent and what are the most appropriate measures we can take to begin to repair. Many people benefit greatly from some of the resources that we would need to cut back on and therefore deny there is a problem, or simply lie! I am not republican, nor democrat, I am a realist. The idea that uninformed people can just rant about idiots and assholes in hollywood scares me as a father of two young boys. You people are the future of the country. I guarantee you my lifestyle is more green than theirs without me even trying. I do try to some degree, I never use a dishwasher I still wash my dishes in the sink by hand. But apart from people not believen ads that put on a green jacket, and not buying lots of green themed magazines, I believe something is changing after all. High gasoline prices do help too. But the idea that you can make some difference (at least for your wallet) is becomming stronger.

I'll believe Al Gore is serious when he and his wife(just 2 people) stops living in a 20 bedroom mansion. What the hell do 2 people need that big of a house for? It's just excessive. Didn't Al Gore show up to give his enviro speech a few days ago in a Cadillac Escalade? Not to mention, he had other vehicles in his entourage/motorcade. Rock band Metallica requires 17 diesel fueled 18 wheelers to haul all their stage trappings. Didn't they play that preachy enviro fest, Live Earth, in Europe last year? Who do these people think they are kidding? Brad Pitt, Mister enviromentally friendly architect, bought a yacht last year. His wife flies private jets for recreation. Madonna owns 7, count them, 7 mansions in England; she also played Live Earth. John Travolta lectured brits about being green after he showed up to red carpet event on a Harley. He owns a big fat energy guzzling mansion and multiple private planes that he warehouses on his estate.

    163

When you have people like Al Gore heading this green movement you know how phony it is. He uses more electricity in his big ass house in one month than I will use for the next 5 years. While advising everyone in a speech to travel by mass transit and bicycle, he was traveling in a large motorcade…limos and SUV's. Green is like snake oil. There's money to be made and enough stupid people to believe it. The same scientist pushing global warming is the one who told us we were entering a new ice age back in the 1970's. Are you under ice yet? Over 9,000 well respected scientists and meteorologists signed a petition challenging global warming, but guess what, no mainstream media paper prints it…they don't want to shame their lover, Al Gore. Wise up folks.

Obama (and Gore) are so out of touch that they spend too much of their time talking about "green"- talking about what MIGHT be based on HYPOTHESIS and what MIGHT work to help the earth. Real americans could give 2 craps about that kind of language right now..they want to know about gas prices- drilling, economy, taxes, and war. When will Mr. Obama stop his "save the poor" and "go green" agenda and talk about these real issues> His speech in Germany was just more of the same….blah blah blah

  65. Blunt says – reply to this

    165

Al Gore is a big fraud. Smart people knew this all along and now the rest of the population is finally catching on. Gore created the man-made global warming myth to punish the American people after his 2000 loss. We all know it now. Yes, there is very slight global warming but it's not caused by man, we couldn't do it even if we wanted to. Proof: all the other planets in our solar system have had the same slight incremental increase.

  66. kate says – reply to this

    166

D'ya really think Al Gore is even buying it? His house uses 16 times more power than the rest of ours, he drives around town in an S.U.V., has a big boat he takes out on the lake and takes his private jet all over the world, then a limo to wherever he needs to go.

If you thought that this was the greatest crisis facing humanity, wouldn't you go further than just buying "carbon credits" (which are a joke anyway) and actually practice what you are preaching to other people? According to Al Gore, the internal combustion engine is our biggest enemy, why does he use so many of them? You'd think he'd motor around the country in a french fry oil powered bus or something, and when he needed to fly, hitch a ride on an airline like the rest of us. What kind of example is he setting for his grandchildren this way?

Al Gore's pleas to the public have more to do with the government subsidizing many of his investments, thereby guaranteeing huge returns for him. He has become a businessman, and not a bad one at that.
