Extreme Foreclosure

Who's going to bail them out now?????

An Atlanta home that the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition folks refurbished is in foreclosure danger, according to a new report.

The owners, Patricia and Milton Harper, reportedly took a $450,000 second mortgage on the home about 15 months ago and have defaulted on the loan.

One of the homeowners said they struck a deal with their bank to rescue their "extreme" home and that there will be no foreclosure auction.

But, the bank would not confirm that claim.

The report goes on to point out that the loan proceeds were invested in a failed construction business.

A city official, who volunteered to help the ABC show create the 'dream home', expressed surprise that the family is in a foreclosure predicament.

He said the local contractor who 'sponsored' the ABC rebuild effort paid off the Harpers' mortgage AND gifted the family with $100,000.

Crazy!

Sounds like the family wasn't too smart with their finances.

You can put trash in a mansion, but it's still trash. Most of these people are in the bad situations because of their own irresponsibility coupled with bad luck. Take away the bad luck and they'd still live in shitty houses for their whole lives.

    WHO CARES?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Justi says – reply to this

    30

    Re: Carri

Yes I am certain that taxes go up when you are in a larger, nicer home. However, that is why you take that 100,000, put it in a saving account and pay your taxes each year. Not blow it and then get a second mortgage for 450,000 AFTER the money is gone. Just goes to show that putting uneducated trash in a nice home is nothing more than just that. It is pretty sad because a home like that could've done much more for someone who valued it.

  31. 31

You forgot to stress SECOND mortgage - since the other was paid off AND they had 100k in cash, this means they already HAD a first mortgage AFTER getting the house. THEN got a second, THEN blew ALL the money - that'd be more than 1 million dollars if you go by two 450k mortgages and 100k in cash.

That's what happens when you give financially struggling people more than they can handle. I've always hated this show and this is mainly why. There are better ways to help good people than giving them a big screen TV and stainless steel kitchen. Shame on this show… hopefully this will be a lesson and they will reconsider the theme.

    56

gee i wonder why those people needed an extreme home makeover in the first place? could it be that they are financially incompetent and that they caused their own problems. There is no "magic" fix and people need to work for what they have and take responsibility for their actions.

    60

When families are "gifted" with having their homes made-over by Extreme Makeover, they are bumped up into a higher tax bracket and heating and energy bills mount-up because the homes have enormous vaulted ceilings. Most likely the family in Atlanta spent their money paying for their "gift."

  62. @v@ says – reply to this

Isn't this where they allegedly declare personal bankruptcy, and then fly off mysteriously to an island somewhere? There's always someone somewhere ready to give receipt of charity a really bad, effing name. Bad apples.

  63. SadBr says – reply to this

    63

Wow. What a tragedy! Such tragic ignorance! Seems like ABC might wanna initiate as contractual agreement on the new home giveaways? To assure the kids have beds to sleep in? "Thou shalt not jeopardize your kids by taking on home equity loans with the gift we're giving you?" They probably should have a FINANCIAL ADVISOR/TAX CONSULTANT forced upon them, too, for the next 3-5 years? BTW: taxes? Max of $4k/yr, I'll bet… Energy? Maybe $2000/yr MAX? Interest bearing account on the $100k? They woulda been SET for LIFE!

  64. ken says – reply to this

    64

this is why charity doesn't work, anything you get for free has no value. Therefore the next time a bum asks you for a handout simply instruct them that "I cannot give you anything you don't already have" A handout is worth nothing and if you are poor looking for handouts it is because you can only receive what you give. No body should feel a sense of obligation to help these people because they are beyond help. They have lost sight of everything valuable in life.

    71

Extreme makeover remodeled a home for a family in my local area and the mother was on the local news prior to EM explaining she cannot afford to feed her 7 kids(sextuplets +one) and the house was in foreclosure (small average house). About a year later I hear that this same family was receiving an Extreme Makeover on their house and it was a huge ass house. (Don't know how she received that big house for EM to do a makeover in the first place). My thought was if she couldn't afford to feed the kids and pay a mortgage what the hell is she doing with this large new home and afford to pay all the utilities.

  72. 72

idiots, why not give those who appreciate it. They better not bail them out, this is true hard knocks lesson!

  73. cj says – reply to this

    73

maybe they need to screen the families better…..this family probably needed help because they obviously dont know how to manage money. The had someone dig them out of a hole, and proceeded to dig an even bigger one by taking a loan for nearly half a million on a house that was paid off for them…let them lose the house, they dont deserve it! Giving these families enormous houses also seems great but then they have to maintain and pay huge bills for them. A similar thing happened with one of the EHM Homes in new jersey…the family couldn't afford the bills and ran into some trouble also.

  74. CRL says – reply to this

    74

This show in itself does good work. The fact that these people are about to be put out of their home is ONLY because of their failure to take proper care of what was givent to them. Even with the taxes going up on a larger, more expensive home, the $100K and what ever jobs they had would take care of them. They used their 2nd mortgage like a money machine and then want to cry out that it's the shows fault somehow for getting them into this jam. SHAME ON THEM for not taking care of such a wonderful gift.

  77. 77

So ABC bought them a house and they decided to put it in jeopardy by taking out a mortgage they couldn't afford? This is the reson for the "mortgage crisis" to begin with. All these peoploe should have to deal with the consequences of their horrible decisions.

  78. lisa says – reply to this

    78

How in the world were those people allowed to take out a $450k second loan on a "free home"? A lot of comments are blaming the family, but they only took what they were offered by someone who was supposed to know what in the hell he/she was doing.

  79. ern says – reply to this

    79

Thats absurd, they did not need a second chance, I can't believe that douchebag paid off their second mortgage. This is show perposterious to beging with.

  80. @v@ says – reply to this

    80

A money management course would benefit most of the recipients. I still think charity can be magnificent, but a lot of people are in pickles because they have no money skills to start with. Breaking the cycle to maximize the gift could help them to make the best of their new situations.

  81. gsg says – reply to this

    82

Don't you need a matching income capable of paying back a $450,000.00 dollar loan? What exactly are the lending prerequisites in the States? WTF. Now the bank will likely own a brand new home, along with thousands of foreclosed others.

  83. Randa says – reply to this

    83

A lot of people helped build that house, now look what the greedy people have done. What a waste, I hope no one bails them out of this. Pieces of trash!!!!

  84. Pffft says – reply to this

    84

It's not just about charity. ABC already got their ratings. The recipients are the losers here, unless the new loan is now in an offshore account somewhere.

  85. Twuth says – reply to this

    85

I'm not surprised…while there are deserving families in dire circumstances not of their doing, many of the families you see on this show are in that situation because of their actions. For example, when a couple decides to have 8 kids have they considered what could happen when one/both die? Did they consider that one parent may not be able to afford to raise that many kids on 1 salary? Did they bother to get life insurance? And so on, and so on…

  86. ken says – reply to this

    86

Re: lisa – the house was used as collateral and that is how they got the loan. i'm sure they put together a business plan that showed they would have the income to repay the loan. They took a risk and it did not pay off. the bank did not take a risk because they held collateral. You shouldn't look to the bank as evil because the family's business venture did not work out………

  87. 87

Re: @v@ – DO YOU WORK AT A BANK!

  88. ken says – reply to this

    88

charity begins at home, whenever you give to charity you are making people poor. Giving to charity only perpetuates desperation, the act of giving to charity can only confirm desperation. there is no need for it (charity) it causes greed and corruption.

Something told me these people would be black, so I googled them and guess what!! They are black. I can't believe it. They're usually so good with money. It's also very rare for charities and shows like this to be constantly giving shit to black people, so what were the odds?

    93

Lynne, not sure what's got your panties in such a knot, but how is Perez a douche (or, for that matter, furthering is slanted agenda) by reporting a story exactly how it's written in the news story?

And when a property is foreclosed UPON, it is public record. The bank wouldn't have to comment. The bank statement in the news article is perfectly valid.

So you live in Atlanta. How the hell does that make you more equipped to speak to this article. I live in Atlanta as well. Does that make me smarter on the topic? No, but the fact that I understand the foreclosure piece makes me smarter than you, you self-made douche.

  94. gina says – reply to this

    94

Well, what was expected. This show does some good and it's a grateful thing to give a needy family a home but the reality is this: These families were needy because of financial handicapps. Most of them were unable to provide for themselves hence acquiring the assistance from an outside source. I'm not pointing out the negative just the reality of it all. Best of luck to the extreme makeover family. Maybe the show should offer financial managment classes in addition to a multimillion home. Just a suggestion.

The house is 5,300 square feet! I am sure they had to pay HUGE gift taxes when they got it and much higher property taxes and insurance just to stay in it. With the mortgage crisis the way it is, the value of the home probably tanked after they got their loan. This has nothing to do with greed - Extreme Makeover gifted them a house they could not afford! Why is that the family's fault?
