A Worthwhile Cause

CLICK HERE to read up on and donate to a very worthwhile cause.

"Unlike many charities that do many different things, The Smile Train is focused on solving a single problem: cleft lip and palate.

Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. Aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. And face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.

The good news is every single child with a cleft can be helped with surgery that costs as little as $250 and takes as little as 45 minutes.

This is our mission:
-To provide free cleft surgery for millions of poor children in developing countries.
-To provide free cleft-related training for doctors and medical professionals.

Until there are no more children who need help and we have completely
eradicated the problem of clefts."

Thanks Perez, great post. I actually do a lot of fundraising for this organization and it is nice to see them get some well-deserved recognition.

I was born with a cleft lip and to "doork" who says that these pictures are too gross to look at, would you look away from the child when you say them in person? Thats a horrible thing to say. I may have gotten my cleft lip fixed when I was a baby, but the scar never goes away and what you said was a horrible thing to say.

I disagree. My second son was born with a cleft lip and because we live in a modernized first world country he had the plastic surgery he needed when he was six weeks old and now looks normal and fine. I really feel for these little people that suffer with this facial deformity. One in 800 births suffers from some form of cleft lip/palate. I think this Smile Train is a wonderful opportunity for those of us who have benefited from this surgery to reach out and help others.

Re: Fidel – its not that they cant take care of their kids it costs alot of money if you have a cleft lip and palate, all the surgeries they have to have, some kids have to have special feeding tubes. It is not cheap or free.

Re: DMAN – You are an evil, vile piece of shit. That's okay, you'll get your's someday. Some of these children in other countries die because they can't eat, not that you give a shit. Would you enjoy seeing your child starve to death? Would you stick your head through a board so I can play "whack -a- stupid fuck" with a baseball bat? Now that sounds like a good time. And hey, then you wouldn't be such a waste of space–it's good to have a purpose.

I had a son in 1999 with a cleft lip and palate. He is about to turn 9. He is so handsome you would not know he was born with anything wrong. His speech and teeth are as well pleasing. We were all born in US. I can tell you his all his operations to fix him were far from $250. I think his bed for two days was $250. Why not help the cost in the US?
