Quote Of The Day

Filed under: Quote of the Day > Katherine Heigl

katyheiglsmoking__opt.jpg

"I'm not as disciplined about it was I once was, but I hope to find my way back as I get older and a little less selfish. I'm ashamed to say that I've just got very lazy about it. I satisfy my vices instead of fighting them. If I start going back to church, I'd have to stop the smoking and drinking. And I wouldn't be able to curse anymore."

- Katherine Heigl, on being a lapsed Mormon

So why hasn't this woman been excommunicated from her church like they doeveryone else who does this stuff? My husband was raised Mormon, and has said the same thing about having to be perfect before going back to that church (which he has never been in about 25 years), and my response as a Christian was to him, that God doesn't want perfect people at church. If we were perfect, we'd be in Heaven. Any church that is that demanding with all it's rules, people better beware. There is nothing in the Bible about all those rules they have.

Re: Linds – That is a stupid comment. If you struggle, what does that tell you? God told us all we need to know in the Bible. And frankly, there are just some things we don't need to know on earth. Mormoms ar arrogant because they think they have the whole answer. It's all about rules, rules and more rules. I have seen more rude mormons just because they teach do this or don't do that, and never teach about loving fellow men. It's all Joseph Smith, never about Jesus and the Trinity. And you cannot tell me you believe you will be a god or goddess on another planet. That's right up there with Scientology.

What a mo-ron! Mormon isn't the only church. You can swear and dance and drink coffee and pray in many religions. The smoking has got to stop! Perez, I love that you are so anti-smoking. Something has got to happen to un-glamorize this stinkin' habit. There is not one good excuse to smoke!!! Why do people hate themselves so much to risk getting COPD, Cancer, or Cariovascular disease. Nothing sexy about oxygen tanks and huge brown loogies, wrinkles, etc. Wake up people!!! It is costing tax payers billions while the tobacco companies are livin' large!

meg - funny thing is…I looked all through my Bible and couldn't find one place where even ANCIENT Christians were advised to beware of those with dark skinned who are cursed by God. Your Book of Mormon has such passages all through it. It even states that someone who marries a Native American will be cursed with dark skin. In the book of Nephi, it states Native Americans were punished by having their skin darkened and they became 'a filthy people, full of idleness and all matter of abomination". Also that black people had the mark of Cain.

So don't tell me to look it up. I did. And Church of LDS is one messed up religion.

wow, there is just so much ignorance, I can't believe its on one single board.

good for you guys, because you know the way to make people believe what you say is by calling those who don't agree freakshows and cult members.

Wow. I'm saddened by the number of you who think it's okay to make rude and hateful comments about a religion that has probably never done anything to you. And I agree with one poster who said "Mormonism is the only religion that is 'okay' to make fun of these days" and that, if the same things were said about other religions, then the nation would be in a tizzy and all up in arms. To those of you considering going to exmormon.org, remember that it's a site run by people who left or were excommunicated from the church for different reasons. Most people who leave the church do so because they were offended or hurt by something someone said (like a fellow church member or teacher who said something they found to be offensive), or committed a serious sin (serious sin= defined as "Serious" by the Bible or Book of Mormon. And how many of you have ACTUALLY sat down and read the Book of Mormon with an open mind? It's another Testament of Jesus Christ. That's all. If you're a Christian, you should have no problem with it. Hope some of this helped. Have a wonderful day, Perez, I love your site. :)

If you want to educate yourself, instead of believing what people who hate or don't understand the church say about it, talk to a member who is in GOOD standing - not some one who knew someone, who knew their neighbor who is an ex-Mormon. Tithing was practiced in the Old Testament times, and onward. How do you think we build temples, and donate millions to charities and disaster relief? Our leaders are not paid professionals, like in other churches. The Book of Mormon is another Testament of Jesus Christ. Like the Bible, it is a record of God's dealings with ancient people, who lived on the American continent. Christ visited the people in the Americas after he was crucified and resurrected. It was this group of people in the Americas that he referred to when he said to his Apostles and said, "Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold." Christ established his church and taught his gospel to people in the Americas, as well. The Book of Mormon contains the fullness of the gospel and Christ's teachings to the people in the Americas. What's so offensive about people who believe in Christ? Every church has rules of conduct. If it doesn't what is it teaching you, to indulge in every carnal desire and abuse your body with substances? What's the purpose of being here on earth, if we never learn to become masters of our own selves? I hope people who have a genuine interest will read the Book of Mormon with an open mind and heart. Peace.

It kills me that people can be so hateful toward a group. This country was founded by people seeking freedom of religion. The tone of some of these comments is so cruel and mean-spirited…I thought the Revolutionary War, Civil War, two World Wars and the civil rights movement taught us to treat people with respect no matter who they are or what they believe. Sorry, Perez, but I'm never coming back here. If this is what your readers are like, I don't want the company.
